18 Year-Old Wesley Baheng Signs For Newcastle United

January 8th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 36 Comments

As we had reported yesterday, Newcastle have indeed finally done the deal for Le Havre’s Wesley Ngo Baheng, and the youngster signed for the Tyneside club today.

Wesley Ngo Baheng - has signed today from Le Havre

The 18-year-old is cleared to play at Kingston Park (kick-off 7pm) after completing his move to Newcastle United from Le Havre. Perhaps some fans can attend the game to welcome the youngster to Newcastle, and then let us know what he looked like. :D

In mid-October the Northern Echo had reported that Newcastle had come to a pre-contract agreement with the youngster, and that the contracts would be signed in January. It looks like the Northern Echo was right on target as the player had signed today for Newcastle, as we had forecast yesterday. We reported on Wesley at the time and had a couple of articles on him in October. But when we looked at who may be arriving next at the club yesterday, it was the Northern Echo who were first with that October story. All credit to them for getting the scoop - which gladly turned out to be true.

Baheng joined Le Havre as a trainee in 1999, and is regarded as one of the potential future stars of French football. It will be very easy for Wesley to fit in at St. James’ Park, as we reported yesterday, since we already have N’Zogbia, Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye and Geremi - who all with French as their first language. This will help Wesley get acclimatized that much more quickly at the club.

We are very pleased to welcome Wesley to Newcastle United. He is another exciting young prospect to go with Ben Tozer, who was signed yesterday.

Let us know what you think - comments welcome.

  • 6 Tom_Toon // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:22

o brasileiro é um differet do bocado ao português

  • 7 Ed Harrison // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:23

In fact I think Shay was trying to talk Spanish to him - as I recall.

  • 8 Shaun Dean // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:25

    What position does he play?

  • 9 spen // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:25

lets hope we have the new henry.even tho we sold saha…..

  • 10 Ed Harrison // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:25

He probably speaks French well - since he played for Lyon for 5 years. But it’s not his native language - anyway Wesley will be able to speak to him - and that’s the most important thing.
    :D

  • 12 Dingo // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:26

  • 15 Tom_Toon // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:29

    You sure hes a striker?

Look at the order in which he is lined-up on nufc.co.uk, looks likes hes a winger who could probbly play striker or the other way around?

  • 16 spen // Jan 8, 2008 at 16:33

  • 17 Marty // Jan 8, 2008 at 17:06

if he gets into the first team he could play left back, lol.

  • 18 knoxy the mag // Jan 8, 2008 at 17:18

if he is a striker play him as astriker or if he is winger play him as a winger
thats half our battle player being played out of postion

  • 19 chuck // Jan 8, 2008 at 17:29

If he is anything like Nzogbia then he is a welcome addition .
Seems to be a policy starting,to stock the club with young prospects and a far sighted one I might add, in the style of Wenger, one of the most succesfull premier managers in the last decade.
    Wonder if its Sams policy?

  • 20 Ed Harrison // Jan 8, 2008 at 17:46

chuck - we think the policy originated with Chris Mort.

  • 21 Ashton // Jan 8, 2008 at 18:02

    I think he is DM

  • 22 Dragoner // Jan 8, 2008 at 18:08

cant wait to see this guy play

  • 23 Big Mick // Jan 8, 2008 at 19:09

Nice to see the toon buying in some quality youngins. God when was the last time this happened (apart from Krul) which Sourness which obviously tipped off about !

  • 24 Graham // Jan 8, 2008 at 20:20

With all the good young talent we seem to be signing, they’ll just be ready for our promotion push from the championship in 2009-10!

  • 25 Yahya Ahmad // Jan 8, 2008 at 21:32

Why dont we also sign Alfonso Alves!
He is a top quality striker!
And we can sell Owen to get the money!

  • 26 obafemimartins // Jan 8, 2008 at 21:55

we are becoming arsenal in more ways than one:
the recruitment policy and half the team will speak french in a few years

  • 27 Leo // Jan 8, 2008 at 22:38

our youth obviously aint that good because we got beat by the unwashed tonight 1-3

  • 28 wozza // Jan 8, 2008 at 23:13

That’s a bit harsh Leo, Sunderland did have a number of player’s with first team experience in their team

  • 29 noel hopper // Jan 8, 2008 at 23:24

Forster, Krul, Taylor, Tozer, Edgar, N’Zogbia, Milner, LuaLua, Caroll, Godsmark, Baheng, Is anyone starting to get a little excited….Man U the beckham years, Arsenal now…they all started with superb youngsters…..looks like we may be building a squad to match any of these….Midfield looking a little bleak though…. who under 21 would we like to see in there?

  • 30 noel hopper // Jan 8, 2008 at 23:25

yeah and we had Carr defending… say no more

  • 31 TITUS BRAMBLE // Jan 9, 2008 at 0:04

STEVEN CARR WILL SIGN FOR BARCA TOMORROW FOR 23 MILLION DONUTS

  • 32 Leo // Jan 9, 2008 at 0:20

    suppose carr was defending…

  • 33 Aussie geordie // Jan 9, 2008 at 2:50

Martins has arrived in Africa!! We were told we could keep him for Man U or the Stoke game and as he was left out at stoke I think its fair to say we are trying to offload him and by keeping him not cup tied he becomes better value. I think he will be off during the window and hopefully defoe or Ashton will come in and replace him. Considering his from….not too worried.

  • 34 Len // Jan 9, 2008 at 4:12

I am sure Wesley is very welcome. Together with Wes and Dean and Jermain.

  • 35 john // Jan 9, 2008 at 14:37

defoe would score a lot more goals tham martins

  • 36 Tom // Jan 10, 2008 at 0:03

I like it how Mort got Allardyce to use his football knowledge to buy loads of youngsters before he got sacked :D
