Newcastle Miss Out On Youngster

As we had half expected yesterday, promising 15 year-old Gillingham striker Luke Freeman has selected Arsenal as the club he’d like to join in the January transfer window.

Luke Freeman – 15 year-old will join Arsenal, as expected

According to sources at his club, Gillingham, Luke Freeman agreed last month to join Arsenal, much to the frustration of Newcastle United and West Ham, who were also hoping to sign the exciting young player.

Luke is in big demand, having already made his debut for the Gillingham club, and he spent a day at each of the three clubs in December, to look over those clubs interested in him.

A Gillingham insider talked about the deal yesterday and revealed the youngster made his decision before Christmas:

“West Ham did table an offer – £4,000! “Then Arsenal and Newcastle offered £100,000.

“The player has now agreed to sign for Arsenal for an undisclosed fee.”

“It was revealed to Gillingham FC shareholders at their AGM/EGM in December.”

You win some and you lose some. But we don’t think that’s the end of young players arriving at Newcastle in January. We would expect at least a couple more, probably players closer to going straight into the first team squad. But we’ll just have to wait and see what business the club can do.

Comments welcome.

At least it’s good to see Mort going after the same youngsters as Arsenal. The previous regime wouldn’t have even tried.

Mort – keep up the good efforts on the youngster front.
