Sky Sports is reporting this afternoon they believe Harry Redknapp is on a plane heading into Newcastle, to discuss the management position at Newcastle with Chris Mort.

Harry Redknapp - jetting into Newcastle?
We have no idea if this is true or not, but that’s the report . However, we find it hard to believe that Harry would leave the South of England, where he has managed all his life to take the stressful job at Newcastle.
His wife Louise, who is the sister of Frank Lampard Senior, wouldn’t want to live in the North East either, we’re almost sure of that. But there again, Harry may be jetting in to at least discuss what he may be missing. It’s hard to turn something down, until you know what it is.
Certainly the wages will be more than he is getting at Portsmouth, but so will the hassle and stress. We don’t think there’s much chance of Harry taking over at Newcastle United.
Since it seems that Mike Ashley wants an English manager it would seem that Blackburn manager Mark Hughes would be the more likely to take over the reigns at the club. But Mark is hardly a proven manager at the higher levels of the Premiership, and he would need time at Newcastle, just like Sam did - but didn’t get from owner Mike Ashley. What do you think?
Comments welcome.

if it is indeed Harry i will be utterly disappointed and pissed with our new board. Sacking Sam for him is just daft.

Whats wrong with ‘Arry? The bungs? Sam had that past too.
He has done very well at portsmouth, they play good football, he has a great squad, gets bargains on the transfer market….
I don’t think it will be him anymore but I would love it if it were

Nothing’s wrong with ‘Arry but he’s no better than Sam.

this is our chanmce to go for a top manager, bollox to having an english manager, we’ve hardly got any english players anyway.
please don’t let it be Harry, he’s no better than fat sam
8 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:28
ToonKing - I think you’re right. Can I just clarify with someone where this English manager mullarky has come from?? Is everyone still taking this from the Sky Sports “breaking news” this morning which also said that Shearer was almost the dead cert??
I’m not convinced that it will be an English manager at all…..and to be honest, there isnt one good enough (or not any better than Sam anyway!)
9 Gordon Benz // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:29
Could someboby name a succesful English manager who is active?
Mark Hughes is Welsh and crap.
Arry Rednose does not play attractive football just a lot of running and fighting. He is an older version of Sam.
I hope this report is wrong just like the reports of us wanting Shearer as manager now!
Please give us modern coach that can inspire us and the players. Someone like Jose Mourinho when he was at Porto!

if any of you would be a billionare and an owner of NUFC…would anyone of you sign harry?
it’s gotta be someone better… ashley bought the club ‘cos he wants to win sth. and he know he won’s succed with such manager… harry’s ok…for an average PL club, but not enough to win the league (in a few years time)
13 Toon Barmy // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:42
Lets not blow this chance, is Arry better than Sam, well his tactics are and he likes attacking football, but lets get someone of real quality or it will be the same down the line & the last thing we want to do is sack another,, Hitsfeld / Klinsman / Shearer/king kev / o neil, but please please try and get JOSE that way the fans will be united.

17 Rich // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:44
I’d love to see louis van gaal in charge, but haven’t heard any reports to suggest it might happen. Mourinho of course is a fantastic idea but it’s so very unlikely. Worth a shot though.
Redknapp I feel is an improvement over Sam, but doubt he’ll be coming anyway. Whoever it is, even Hughes, will get time I think. Ashley wanted to fire Sam from the start, just because he hadn’t appointed him himself. He gave him a bit of time to impress and he didn’t, losing the support of the fans, making some questionable purchases and generally producing some performances worse than those under Roeder.
Ashley’s choice will be given a fair chance.

thats some funniest bloggng ive read in a while.
Sunderland dont have an airport.. i dont think Mackems can afford to fly…
Everton Chairman now on Sky Sports TV saying he had a chat with Ashley.
He just said something like:
i asked Mike if he was interested in David Moyes at all, he replied that even if Moyes was the best manager in the world, which in your eyes and evertons he is i wouldnt make such an approach.
i paraphrase, but the Everton chairman made Mike AShley sound like he was being a real gentleman and not wanting to mess up Evertons fortune by offereing Moyes a big deal.
Im still hoping for a top-class manager, we have been linked to alot of the top class birttish and almost all have been dismissed in some way or another.
again, Ottmar Hitzfeld!
hes still not on your voting system, that un-democratic!!!!

this man was made for newcastle united (and the clause IS negotiable!!)
But last night Mourinho ruled out moving to another English club, adding that he “hoped to be surrounded by love” in his next job.
When asked if he would return to English football, he said: “Yes, for sure I want (to),” but added: “I don’t want it in my next step. I don’t want to leave Chelsea’s (door) and go immediately to another door.
“I think my next step must be another country, must be another experience, another football. But I am 44, I hope I have many years in front of me. I love English football and I don’t change a single word I’ve said before.”
The Spurs offer eclipsed the £4.5m-a-year that Levy was prepared to pay Sevilla coach Juande Ramos last month, and showed again that the north London club are determined to replace current boss Martin Jol.
Sportsmail can confirm that there is a clause in Mourinho’s £12.5m settlement with Chelsea which means he would be unable to take up a position with another Premier League club this season, but a Chelsea insider revealed that this remained negotiable.
Levy was so eager to bring in Mourinho for the beleaguered Jol that he was prepared to offer the Portuguese a contract length of his choosing, even a deal as short as just the rest of this season.
As speculation mounted last night as to Mourinho’s next move, he emphasised that he would not be returning to coach in his native Portugal and had no desire to take the national job currently held by under-pressure Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari.
“I don’t want the Portugal national team,” he said. “I want Portugal to succeed. There is no need for Scolari to look behind him. I do not want to work in Portuguese football.”
In a hint that he may move to Serie A in Italy or the German Bundesliga, he said: “I will study another language because I would like to learn one more.
“I have to choose between Italian or German because French is fine, so is Spanish and my English.
“I am ready for every country and every project. I just hope that in the next one I am surrounded by love so I can express everything I have to express in terms of my qualities as a manager.
“I’m not tired, I don’t need one, two, three, four months (to recover). Stress is not to have a football game to play.”
He admitted shedding tears with his players over his departure.
“I was crying. Everything I do is with a lot of passion and emotion. I create everything around the group ethic.
“You have a family at home and another one on the training ground.”

Paul Ince would be my choice - he’s done brilliantly in the lower divisions and has the drive and personality to become the next oustanding English manager. He wouldn’t waste any time seperating the wheat from the chaff.

Allot of good managers are being mentioned, tho allot of u ppl should sort out ur wishes… Ppl such as Mourinho, Lippi & Hitzfeld play in a rather DEFENSIVE calculated way, much like the one Sam tried to imprint… U guys want Hiddink if any, cause u can forget all about KK, 1st of all he has stated that he is FINISHED with football and 2nd Its different times than when he was here last, he wouldnt want to ruin his legendary status.

Great screaming Jesus, is it really true that they didn’t have the replacement lined up before giving Sam the whack in the middle of the transfer window?
Isn’t that a little like taking your jeans off and putting on a condom BEFORE your date even orders dinner?
Is Fat Mike Ashley just building up drama around the new super-star appointment, or is he just insane?
That could explain the Alan Smith jersey, I suppose.

At least he will attack teams
Hopefully he will bring Sol Campbell with him eh?
It looks like being Harry Redknapp lads. Good manager, not won much to be fair but very positive and surprisingly very good at organizing defences. Might just get the best out of the team and bring the old atmosphere back to St James’s Park
I think we will sign players too. In face it’s probably already been talked about before Sam got the boot no doubt.
Might as well go for Anelka if we have a 30 million war chest!

Im really on the fence about this one, hes the middle ground between all out attack and all out defence.
I like all the players hes linked with, thats a positives, he has ambitions to bring huge player to pompey, so he can bring even bigger players to the toon.

£4m a year? We could easily try and tempt the likes of van Gaal for that and the compensation would be a similar level as well.
150 Jack // Jan 11, 2008 at 0:23
This is exactly the same situation as Big Sam, appointing a manager who has never won anything but is deemed a success for finishing in the top half of the table, and look how that turned out.

He wears the shirt, he stands amongst us, but dont be fooled, he is after all a business man with a football club, not a fan. If he were he would at least go for one of the big names, ok he may not get them but at least go for them, he has the money and he is supposedy a fan who wants the club to be winning things.

Keegan HAS been seen around SJP,TODAY.
Someone posted that he wouldn’t want to ruin his legenday status,of course he wouldn’t.Just imagine though how legendary he would be to come back and do it all over again?Maybes even win something? He would get time,he would get money. He knows what to expect. It won’t phase him.
The possibility of becoming UBER-Legendary has got to be appealing. We all want to be seen as gods.
We will never really now how interfering Fat Freddy was but that’s not a problem for KK now ,is it.
Maybe he was just up here visiting or off out on the hoy.Maybe not.

Just cos skysports says we’re gonna approach doesnt make it so - they make stuff up or believe what the Sun tells them either way its 90% bullshit! Anyway even if it’s true it doesn’t mean Redknapp wants to come - I don’t think it’ll be him!
I also don’t think it’ll be Shearer cos if MA intended to get him we’d have him by now surely. I think it would be a bad idea to give it to Al but at least eveyone would be behind him and it would be entertaining to say the least!
I think Benitez has had it with those soon-to-be-bankrupt American pensioners and he fancies working with a soon-to-be-bankrupt English dude (and Terry Mac - u can’t sack him) i reckon its him
166 shirts // Jan 11, 2008 at 0:41
in New York they’re reporting that the official approach will go to ‘Arry on the Sky Sports news broadcast–though i can’t tell if this is tape delayed or live.
I could understand if they had Mourinho or one of the other giant names lined up, but this?
here’s hoping it’s Sky headline grubbing.
I don’t know much about him to be honest–maybe he’ll be great, but…
167 Ross // Jan 11, 2008 at 0:49
well sky sports say they understand from a very reliable source that we’ll make a move for him in the morning.
Ashley is going to give him full use of his private jet..as not to disturb his dogs or something? who knows, it sounded pretty ridiculous anyway.
sky spors then went through the back pages of all the papers, the redknapp swoop dominating them all.
headlines such as “fly me to the toon”

170 Craig F // Jan 11, 2008 at 1:01
I’d accept Harry to be fair. As long as he starts talking to the BBC again… and stops that wierd ass twitchy thing he does when he’s losing/under pressure.
Imagine that in transfer negotiations - “so, come to Newcastle Diego we have amazing fans, lots of money, Greggs.”
“Greggs u say?? Ok then where do i sign?” “Wait what the hell was that?”
“oh i twitch from time to time, u no, just for the sheer bizarness of it”
“oh ok, well f**k that i’m off to City at least he’ll just try to s**g my wife”
171 Greg B // Jan 11, 2008 at 1:02
I think with the majority of fans its nothing personal with Redknapp, he should be a vast improvement on the last manager, I think the disapointment stems from the fact we are run by a billionaire who supposedly says he wants to win things etc and the best we can expect is ‘Arry.
172 Edd Case // Jan 11, 2008 at 1:02

Ed - you are beginning to sound like a crappy tabloid journo.
“His wife Louise, who is the sister of Frank Lampard Senior, wouldn’t want to live in the North East either, we’re almost sure of that.”
What?? We’re “almost sure”? How much is almost? 80%? 90%? No real idea really but you thought it sounded good and made you sound like youknow what you’re talking about.
How the hell do you know what she may or may not think? Have you spoken to her? Do you know her? Do you even know what she looks like?
Of course you don’t - she called Sandra to start with!! Louise (Nurding), the singer, married his son.
And as for “We don’t think there’s much chance of Harry taking over at Newcastle United.” Who is we - and on what basis do you make the indepth assessment? I can think of a few reasons why he might.
1. £20m over 4 years is a fairly powerful argument.
2. Our genial benefactor may lend him his plane.
3. Shock horror - Northumberland has beaches - in fact some of them are the best in the country. As long he doesn’t want to go into the icy water he’ll be fine.
4. We allow peolpe to bring dogs with them when they move up here - he’ll not have to have them put down or put in quarantine.
5. Our average attandance is the 3rd highest in the Premiership. Pompey’s is the 2nd lowest. That’s more adulation (or the converse if things go tits up) and more cash to spend on players.
And finally …
6. All these buggers have an ego the size of Canada and the challenge of getting us back into the Top 5 and maybe getting closer to some silverware is too big a challenge for them to turn it down./ they all want to be THE ONE who will be remembered forever.
The fact he’s a cockney doesn’t help - but so was SuperMac, Rob Lee, and a host of others who we grew to love.
If he gets the job - and it looks likely - we simply give him a chance like all the others. and then we hopwe for the best. Nothing is guaranteed - especially when you follow The Lads.

190 Magpie2121 // Jan 12, 2008 at 11:01
All MA needs to do is hand out a list of potential newcastle managers to all toon fans / season ticket holders during the next home game.
This way the fans can vote who we want and obviously the manager with the most votes should be persued and MA should then fight tooth and nail to get him.
