There have been a few hints put out last night, about who the new manager will be at Newcastle United, but if Chris Mort and owner Mike Ashley have done their jobs well, we expect the new manager appointment to be announced today.

Chris Mort - OK we just sacked Big Sam - now what - thinks?
The first hint that was put out was that it would be British manager. That sounds a little strange, because if he was English they would have said that – so we immediately thought it may be Mark Hughes of Blackburn.
But that also meant it couldn’t be two of our favorites – Jose Mourinho or Sven Eriksson.
Then Alan Shearer, who’s smarter than a lot of people realize, let it be known through friends that it would not be him, because he was happy with his job at the BBC.
So then a potential nightmare appointment of Steve McClaren was put out – most Geordie supporters were seen to vomit on the spot. He wasn’t successful at Middlesbrough, and was way out of his depth for England. Enough said.
If Sam lasted only last 8 months at Newcastle we’d give McClaren a couple of months at best, and that’s if he performed above his norm. This would be a nightmare appointment for the Newcastle United club, and an absolute nightmare for Newcastle fans.
Then the favorite last night became Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth and former Soutampton and West Ham manager. But harry has done all his management in the South of England, and we didn’t think he would ever want the Newcastle job, with all it’s stress and hassle. He knows all about what it’s like at Newcastle, and surely this is not for him, at his age.
But Harry seems to be the current favorite. A decent manager, but he’ll still be a disappointment to Newcastle fans, who now expect a world class manager because they sacked Sam in the way they did. Sam was given but 8 months in the job, which will look even more absurd as time goes by.
Initially a 20/1 chance at Hills, Harry’s odds were quickly slashed to an odds-on favorite for the Newcastle manager job. Mark Hughes was the other British manager punters latched on to, and the Blackburn manager was slashed to 7/2 from 25s by bet365 before settling back at 9/2. We think Mark would jump at the Newcastle job.
Shearer’s chances of getting the job seemed to wither further when the BBC reported yesterday that sources close to the former England striker - were saying he was unlikely to succeed Allardyce at Newcastle. Shearer is currently on vacation.
And further reports on Sky Sports News that the club were looking for an “experienced” manager prompted a further cut of Redknapp to just 2/7 with Hills. We think it is far more likely that Mark Hughes will be the appointment. We would have expected better but Mark Hughes would just about be acceptable. He’s certainly a football man who has proved he can manage, but he hasn’t won anything either.
But is this is true we will be very disappointed in the management and planning skills of Ashley and Mort. They should have had the manager already well lined up before taking the amazing action yesterday of sacking Sam Allardyce at this awkward time.
Sam was obviously taken by surprise by the whole thing. We thought the new management would be different than the old – but Sam’s tenure in the job of less than 8 months is the shortest tenure of any new manager for decades. Seems like it’s the same ole same ole - no change at all in other words.
Right now Newcastle fans need to be pleasantly surprised by the new manager appointment, otherwise Mort and Ashley may find a lot of unhappy fans in Newcastle. This thing could even backfire on them, if they don’t show they have planned way ahead for the appointment and show they know what they are doing.
What do you think? Who do you think our new manager will be?
We expect for him to be announced tomorrow - so please let us know.
Comments very welcome.

I don’t want Hughes or Redknapp. Redknapp is all about mediocre players and maybe nipping a UEFA cup position. Mark Hughes won’t bring the style the Toon wants.
Give me Van Gaal or Mourinho.

Tooner - I really hope we have a top guy lined up - getting a little worried to be honest - although we wouldn’t have expected an announcement on Wed - because of some respect for Big Sam.
One bombshell at a time.

you would assume they know who there man is .
pompy has dennied any contact so i really dont think its redknapp.
Mclaren just lost ashley MILLION’s , mike not happy at all about england being out of euro’s so there is no chance in hell he will get nufc job .
my money’s on keegan , the fact he was offered a sporting directors role still dwell on my mind .
i really expect our board to have someone lined up , the timing was crazy if not , if was down to stoke he would have been gone on monday , unless they put the wheels in motion then and got confirmation today on a replacement .

It is certainly a worrying time, the next move we will have to live with for the next season and a half atleast if not (and hopefully) alot more.
No to :
Jol
McClaren
Redknapp plz bookies be wrong plz
There’s still money around for Shearer and 9-1 odds at Ladbrokes is unbelievable good value imo.
Whoever is next please oh please lets go in the right direction…….upwards and onwards.

I think Newcastle are a disgrace after what they did to Big Sam.Lets make it clear performances were poor at times and sometimes he made some weird tactic changes, but this guy got Bolton into the premiership and after a few years sustained them as a top 7 team and the amazing thing was most of his buys were free transfers.I can understand why we got rid of souness and Roeder Roeder is a mouse he couldnt motivate anyone and Souness bought Boumsong do i need to say anymore on him????Big Sam was only here for 6 months and even though he should of done better he sounds like a very smart guy and had a good long term plan for the club………..
But unfortuntly fans and board have got impatient and decided to get rid of in my opnion an excellent manager.
I really hope this doesnt come back to haunt us look what happened when we sacked Sir Bobby we went back years do we really want to go futher behind????
Who i like as manager???
Mark Hughes seems like a good manager….I like the signings he makes the likes of Benni Mcarthy at like 3 million scored loads of goals last season then he got Santa Cruz for the same price and he has scored like 7 goals in the last 5 games……He seems like a mangaer who can improve a team and i think he be an ok choice but be honest with ya no better than Big Sam
I would love Jose Mourinhio to come his smartness in the transfer market is not so clever though but makes up for it with alot of attributes but needs loads of cash to be a success..
Dont think he will come though and dont think he can join another english club til next summer………..
If we get Steve maclaren or a chris coleman type……
Well i am afraid to say toon fans expect more mid table medicorty at the most.

I’d not to be hugely disappointed with Rednapp at all, but I would be with McClarem and a little disappointed with Hughes too.
Jol would be good, so would Houllier with the right assistant…

Alan Oliver article , jan 5th
There is never a dull moment where Newcastle United are concerned. At the moment Sam Allardyce is under fire from a good percentage of United fans, but chairman Chris Mort insisted to me at Stamford Bridge that they were happy with their manager. That was on Saturday night. On Sunday night I received a phone call from someone who works for the biggest agents in the world. He wanted Chris Morts mobile number. On Monday the aforesaid top guy’s repesentative contacted the United chairman who repeated what he had told me at Chelsea. But then Chris Mort was suddenly given the name of the someone who would like to manage Newcastle United. And I am told it nearly blew the chairman’s socks off. I know the name of the top agent and his colleague who contacted me. But not the name of the would - be United Manager. That has not stopped me wondering about it. The top man in question is friends with the José Murinho camp. So has José been touted as Newcastle manager? or Marcello Lippi, who is currently out of work? all I can say is watch this space.

Put N’Zogbia in a mainshot…he has been by far our best player on the season.
12 Lawman // Jan 10, 2008 at 2:18
hmmmmm…..
the legend that he is, I still think Shearer needs a bit more managerial experience to manage a club the size of NUFC and the expectations attached to it.
Although not as successful as I’d hoped, I would’ve at least given BSA until the end of the season. Nothing positive could possibly come out of this situation.
As for Hughes and Redknapp….. NO!!!! They are mediocre managers - not bad but by no mean brilliant!!! If we’re slating McClaren (don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of McClaren either), at least he’s won the league cup and got to Uefa cup final. What’s Hughes and Redknapp won??? Why would they be considered ok and acceptable if McClaren’s a definitely NO NO???
Personally I’d love Jose the special one to manage us but that’s hope more than anything else. My second (and more realistic) choice would be Marcello Lippi. Serie A titles, Champions League and World Cup victories…… what more could you ask for on a CV????

15 Aussie geordie // Jan 10, 2008 at 3:05
I think they have done it becasue they are the new owners and they want their own man. I wasn’t a nufc supporter in the days of Keegan but he would certainly bring a reputation with him and I’d love to see what he can do. I have no doubt the next manager will get time to settle in and do what he wants with the team but I think Ashley is only prepared to wait and have patience with someone he himself had chosen and hired. Fair enough too seeing as we all want him to put $20 mill on the table for transfers.
I dare say he saw Sam as the unambitious choice and he wants our club to go places!

Ed, I know these times are tough on the nerves but… when you write that Hughes has won nothing, you’re being unfair… Rovers qualified for Europe if I remember… And would someone like Mourhino really do better with the resources available at Blackburn? I think he does a great job. Martin Jol has done very good as well with two 5th places…
18 Hadji // Jan 10, 2008 at 3:34

ashley did well to keep the takeover quiet, theres no question in my mind they have the replacement.
the opportunity not to give alladyce funds led to the ultimate stand off, which ended the only way it would.

please not David O’Leary….
please not Keegan he has had his time, and he couldnt handle the pressure then what makes people think he could now..
Sam needed time, like any business it takes time. I agree Mike wanted his own person..
I cant see Newcastle winning anything for a long time! because ideas take time and if you expect to win straight away which the fans and the board want you need patience which both seem not to have!
If you want world class then you buy world class and pay the cash.. and that goes for the manager to.. all this talk of redknapp and Hughes they are good where they are but not world class..
Newcastle needs A fresh start and fresh ideas and the fans need to learn it takes time!

Maybe SA wasn’t lining up anybody good or with flair this January and that pushed the envelope to sign someone new - some new manager that stars would like to come play for. We got Oba and Owens, BSA’s football doesn’t suit them. What he did with Bolton, great. That is impressive, but for a team with ambitions of fifth and up, he couldn’t have taken us there could he??? Besides, everyone said it when Sam was hired, that you don’t like his football. If media and others want to say we need to give time and we’re not as big as we think, well we’re tired of the direction we’re going. It sounds as if we’re a hell of a lot better now with Mike Ashley so I am not going to worry about the future of the club, I think he will work on that regardless of who is the manager. And McLaren is terrible; what’s worse is he acted like he know more than anyone about football.

Sorry big sam u sacked, i guess ur tactics didnt suit us, at all
35 Craig Allen // Jan 10, 2008 at 5:57
I’d prefer Martin O Neill to Redknapp. Please let it not be Redknapp.
Please let it be the best manager for the job and hope the board doesn’t limit themselves to the only British thinking.
Would be interesting to see who of Sam’s favorites the new manager will hold onto.
Ah, Ed you’ll be averaging 200 comments per post until the end of season. Newsworthy stuff.
EDIT: (love the feature, btw ED) Also be interesting to see who (if not all) of the huge contingent of backroom staff Sam brought in would remain or leave.
36 Aussie Dave // Jan 10, 2008 at 6:04
Hiddink is an absolutely brilliant manager, he worked wonders with our national team, Russia and he always did well at PSV. Tactically there is no equal in world football, and he has an aura about him that creates massive respect from players.
Mourinho would be great as well, if we got Jose you know he has been promised shit loads of cash.
I am not overly happy with yet another sacking. Michael Owen has seen more managers at NUFC than games played.
At least with a new manager, who will be installed by the new ownership, there will be no excuses in backing him financially. The only way to improve is to spend big on world class players then maintain the results, seemed to have worked ok for Chelsea and City.
37 scotty // Jan 10, 2008 at 6:25
As i reported in one of the articles after the city defeat - A friend who works within St. James told me that Alan Shearer had stayed late that night, and had agreed to become the next manager if Sam didn’t manage anything less than a win against Stoke.
So far all of this is becoming a reality! But i really hope if Shearer takes over - it will be until the end of the season only. My first choice since the club was restructured was Morinho - and still my favourite but, the fact he can’t take over straight away may prove to be a big stumbling block.
As for the rest of the managers being linked i think the only other positives would be Lippi, Hitzfeld or Klinsman. The rest have all been ridiculed by the English media and have lost their respect as top flight managers.
Watch this space……………………….
38 Steve // Jan 10, 2008 at 6:28
A couple of observations:
1) Is it not true that Nigel Pearson will be taking the team to Old Trafford this weekend. I do believe this is the state of affairs. If so, that would surely suggest that there will be no appointment before then.
2) Betting agencies know about as much as my Grandma about the new appointment. Mort and Ashley are the type to not give anything away. This notion that it will be a British manager is a load of Hoo Haa. Mort and Ashley would never hint at such rubbish.
If I could also submit my opinion, I do believe the new Gaffer should be a man who taken teams into the Champions League, plays the ball on the deck and favours a short game which is creative and attacking…
Hadrian, if you ccould supply us with a link to the article you speak of, I’d be very keen to read it.

I am delirious we have got rid of Allardyce for obvious reasons. I have never been so depessed watching NUFC before in 35 years. However, why go for Redknapp. He has the same CV as Sam. he’s an English manger, who’s never won anything ever, in a very long career, is another alledged bung merchant and has half his team disappearing to Africa. Well, in my opinion if we cant get anyone amazing (Mourinho etc) then I would be MORE than happy with Houllier. Or even Ranieri.
No to McLaran straight away, although I’m yet to make my mind up on Redknapp (initial thought is no though). Shearer wouldnt be bad BUT ONLY if he has Robson or Keegan (or another experienced manager) as a footballing mentor.
Dont think I’d take to Mark Hughes, and certainly not David O’Leary.
I think we need to go for a foreign manager - too many mediocre english ones with the Sam tactics (i.e. boring defensive football) at heart.
I’m really excited about who we’re going to get….I just hope it isnt a let down!! I’m sure Ashley isnt going to appoint any old Tom Dick or Harry (no pun intended!)….for the timing of Fat Sam’s sacking I reckon he’s too clever not to have someone already lined up….here’s open Alan Oliver is right for the first time ever!!

57 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:31
With Allardyce going so suddenly a replacement must have been agreed over the last 48 hours or so.
To get rid of him at this time, the right manager must have become available and I wouldnt be at all suprised if it was a little Portugese bloke with dodgy stubble who thinks he is special…
I have said before that Ashley wants to make money from this venture and must have the best people in place to do so - i’ve just got a feeling thats all - the same feeling I had a couple of days before Michael Owen turned up…
58 Eamonn // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:32
Big Sam was Freddie’s choice, this is what sunk him with A&M. The new man will be given plenty of time, wait and see. Even though we generally stank under Sam you’d have to feel he wasn’t given a chance here, wrong place at the wrong time. He’d have turned it around next season I’ve no doubt.

61 Aussie Dave // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:37
Eamonn you are probably right, given time Sam most likely would have got the job done.
One thing working against him is he doesnt have the ability to attract top class players from the continent.
This is the reason why a big foreign manager is required. Look how easily City were able to sign class players in quick time with Sven’s reputation. Mourinho or Hiddink for me.

It drives me nuts to see the media all claiming they know its Rednapp and they are experts on what happened yesterday - when none of them saw this coming. They just needed a name to fill their stupid newspapers. We all know its not Harry.
I said yesterday Ashley does not make rash decisions. He knew damn well who was taking over and for him to approach them before sacking Sam, they had to be unnattached to a club. Because it is illegal to line them up whilst still at another club.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see Jose.

67 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:42
Nick Dryden - See Hadrian’s quoting at Comment 9 - I havent seen the article myself, but hey….fingers crossed eh!?
Just to say - I am absolutely over the moon that Sam has gone!! I dont understand all doom and gloom and mongers saying that it’s the worse possible thing that could have happened! No - he was a shit manager and his record shows it (3rd worse in recent times…even Roeder was way better!!). I dont give a shit if he was given only 8 months either becuase instead of getting gradually better in that time we got very much worse!! If the fat git cant have improved even slightly in 8 months then there was no future for him!!
I think his attitude stunk, and he seemed to have the highest opionion of himself which was totally unfounded!
Here’s hoping Smith follows him out of the door and a decent captain is now appointed!!
I cant stop smiling!!! Goodbye to boring defensive football….hopefully! lol

Plus - I think it is official!! The Fat Freddy Shephard door can finally be closed!!
Ashley has come good and got rid of the debt and the crap manager!
The man seems very sensible and obviously wanted a clean slate…his own man….and you can’t blame him.
We were stagnant, and we can only improve!
TOON ARMY! TOON ARMY! TOON ARMY!
70 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:50
Yeah, Harry looks like he’s ruled himself out….still, Ashley and Mort said they werent going to sack Sam, so obviously people can change their minds very quickly!
What I do think however, is that Ashley/Mort have already arranged the new man in, and if Harry is saying that this morning then he obviously isnt the person lined up.
No work is getting today anyway - I’m gonna be online checkin all day for updated!!
71 Aussie Dave // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:51
Graham I was only joking about Wenger, I hope we can do what most teams who sack their manager and win their next game, against Manure that would be brilliant and certainly get us going.
72 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:51
Steeley - im with you on that one! No work today!!
73 RobNUFC // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:52
Where are all these so called scoops on “its going tto be a british manager” coming from?
Conflicting news - Mort says “we’ll go through the correct channels” to get our new man - which suggests he’s already employed. But if he has already agreed (’arry) then aren’t we in danger of having tapped him up?
74 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:53
Aussie Dave - as long as we show passion and a will to win then i’m happy - Oh, and players playing in their correct position would be nice as well

For me it is a 3 horse race for the job. One of these has been lined up in advance and has said yes.
1 . Mourinho
2. Keegan
3 . Lippi
77 Aussie Dave // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:57
i hear that, get Enrique in a left back, Zog in Midfield, Milner on the right, the list goes on.
Most of all when Geremi comes back he should be used as a backup right back where he played for Chelsea and where is only strength being his crossing can benefit the team.
78 geordie_jordan // Jan 10, 2008 at 8:59
the more i think about it, the more i think that it will be mourinho. it is just the type of manager that ashley knows he needs to give the fans and the press , so they don’t pillory him over SA’s sacking.
plus, you know jose will take it as a huge challenge. the fact that everyone says this is where manager’s go to die, the fact that if he delivers silverware to nufc he will be a god. the challenge of newcastle just seems like a great fit for him.
79 Yorkie Dave // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:01
Good Decision but wrong time, Idont believe that its Redknapp (having too good a season and gets what he wants at pompy). Iwant Mourinho or Hitzfeld both superb managers. But i Strongly believe that SIR KEVIN KEEGAN IS BACK IN TOON!!! i believe that he has been in line since Mike Ashley took over. He aint daft he would of done his research and found out that our best times were under Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Kevin Keegan and how much we all love them both. Unfortunately Sir Bobby isnt available at the moment but IT WILL BE SIR KEV………………watch this space
80 James // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:02
Newcastle need a man who has been there and done it, won everything. Young enough to want to stay here for 4-5 years, and is the type of man that world class players want to play for. Only one man fits that bill and Ashley knows it….
Jose Mourinho
81 Graeme // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:03
This whole scenario looks like a bad dream. A typical knee jerk reaction, with no forward planning. Ed, yesterday you were convinced we had a new manager all lined up, today you’re “worried” - another knee jerk!!!
This club just gets worse. Stability was what was needed, its what BSA was trying to establish, but the Board decided 8 months was enough. Its been the storey since Joe Harvey was given the boot - remember him???
Unless the replacement is lined up and announced pdq, then Mort and Ashley have screwed up, big time.
82 Fran Williams // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:09
Hasn’t Mourino got a clause in his exit contract that stops him managing another Premier League side till the end of the season ?
83 Southern_Magpie // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:11
Now the new era can finally start under Mort and Ashley. Shepherd’s last mistake at NUFC has finally gone and now A & M can get the man of their choice in.
I’m worried that if the appointment is anyone but a top quality proven coach, preferably foreign, then before long the same thing will happen that happened with Allardyce. Us fans will only give our patience if the vast majority of fans are happy with the appointment. It was worrying that the club said that they were not looking abroad for our next manager. This does not provide me with much optimism and it is a sad fact that there are very few top quality British coaches around today, but it is a fact that the club has to deal with. I fear that under a British manager like Redknapp, we could find ourselves back to where we are now before too long…
84 ShiNg // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:11
It really a crazy thing that sacked big sam during this period. It makes me so upset after i read the new today when i woke up.
I think we didn’t give enough time to big sam to do what he want to do. We can see that the injury list of this season is improving.
Also, big sam had obtained several quality defenders and our defence also strengthen.
Wrong things were improved one by one. I think he is a quality manager although his tactic in Bolton are not suitable in Newcastle. Why don’t give more time big sam to improve the tactic?
Anyway, the thing was gone. I just hope that we will not frustrate by the future success of big sam and lead other team to defeat us at the St. James Park.
Finally, if the next manager is Mourinho, Klinsmann, Lippi or Hiddinck, i will not surprised by the decision of sacked big sam by Mort and Ashley. I just hope the next manager will not be Redknapp, Jol, McCLAREN……….why we need to sack big sam and employ the manager whose ability is not better than big sam??
85 Graeme // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:15
If they announce Morinho, I will apologise, in spades and praise their acumen to the hilt lol
Wouldnt that be a tonic, having Jose at the toon, what a dream lol
86 Mac // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:20
None of the top european managers would touch us with a barge pole. This is typical NUFC, my guess is we have no manager lined up and things just came to a head yesterday over transfers and money. Expect no one to sign in January because Cashley isn’t gonna back Pearson. Look forward to defeats of the likes of Bolton and the mackems. Has anyone ever stayed up on 26 points???
87 LeazesEndLoyal // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:20
SkySports made this rediculous claim last night that everyone seems to be jumping on!
They had been “informed” (I use the term loosely!), that the new manager wasn’t Shearer, wasn’t Foreign, and they have to go through the correct channels to get him!
That’s all too specific for me, I indeed smell a rat. That statement is too precise!
88 daryl // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:21
glad BSA has gone. I couldn’t understand why he insisted on butt and smith being the centre of the team. Emre is by far a better player. He tried to sell Taylor. What a ridiculus decision the lad loves the club and has great potential. We have some good players and just need a manager who can manage the players we have got. Alan Smith plays well when in position!!!!!! I can’t think of any British managers capable of inspiration. Jose would be my choice. Maybe Nigel and Shearer caretaking until the summer.
89 milner fan // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:23
If we get a shocking manager, that will maybe teach all the boo boys n sack BSA fans to keep it quiet from now on. We had a great manager and so wot he had a slight blip well the players did. O well gd luck to new manager, just think wot BSA could have done!
90 Toony // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:24
The fans of this club dont now a good thing when the see it. To turn around newcaste football club takes time, time our fans apparently dont have. And what a shame that is, cause no manager in his right mind, would succed Big Sam knowing that if you cant keep up with the Top clubs in England your out faster then You can spell patience.
My heart bleeds with Sam, and with this club, But unless our fans get som realism and patience we will never be more than a mid table team. Please take under consideration that Man U, in the first two seasons under ferguson was no more than a mid table team. But he got the time from the board and the patience of the supporters. And look at Man u now.
91 LeazesEndLoyal // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:28
Toony you forget what Ferguson did before coming to Man Utd, or maybe you just don’t know? Allardyce had not prooved anything before he came to Newcastle.
92 Rob Kirton // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:30
Mac: I was expecting defeats to Bolton and the Mackems. 9 points from the last 36 was relegation form and no apparent relief at all this month.
We now have some hope, though only if the right appointment is made. The problem lies if there is no plan and it was a knee jerk reaction. Given the way Ashley took over the club and then ousted FFS, I would hope not. The next few days will tell.
93 Rich // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:33
Everyone is reporting Harry Rednapp as odds on favorite now as Ashley wants a father & son backroom team (Harry & Jamie).
it seems we have swapped one incompitent owner/chairman for another.
more very dark days ahead for the Toon.
I kind of hope we get relegated now, we deserve to the way we have treated Sam.
Newcastle have said he WILL NOT BE FOREIGN and he is currently in employment.
please remember this when speculating.
94 Rob Kirton // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:34
milner fan: This was no slight blip. Check out Allardyces record in the last 6 month at Bolton. I beleive that Allardyces record over the first part of 2007 was worse than Roeders record at Newcastle. If the guy had something he certainly had lost it for the entirity of 2007 managing two separate clubs. Maybe he’s lost his MOJO - who knows…
95 James // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:35
Ashley has never made a knee jerk reaction in his life. Mort said he took a year to decide whether to buy Newcastle.
This sacking has been planned since the Wigan game. Ashley just needed the yes from his new man.
96 James // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:36
Rich - Newcastle have issued no statements on the nationality of the new man. That was reported by a tabliod journalist looking for an angle.
97 LeazesEndLoyal // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:37
RICH - SkySports have said he will not be foreign, the only press realease from Newcastle has been to wish Sam all the best!
So I think you need to stop reading gutter press!

it’s not harry .
looking more and more like either keegan or jose to me , hope thats not just my heart ruling my head , but i think it’s all pointing to a manager who’s not got a job in the prem at the moment .
99 steve // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:37
@Toony - Fergie saved Manu U from almost certain relegation in his first season finishing a respectable 11th, that sounds like decent progress to me.
Sams problem was that no one could see any progress with the first team either in results or performances. His purchases have been poor at best and have let him down big time - they should be ashamed to look themselves in the mirror this morning (although Joey Barton should just be ashamed full stop).
Yes he has improved behind the scenes, but quite a number of respected people in the game have come out and said its more like a commune with consultants vying for players attention rather than a tight knit band in agreement on how to take the club forward.
Bottom line is you are judged on results, we would probably have taken the dour football if results were ok ( I’m talking maybe 6/7th in table) no one was expecting miracles in his first season, just a little improvement .
Man - this is an exciting time, I just hope we don’t recruit Hughes or Rednapp
100 LeazesEndLoyal // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:38
James and Rob Kirton well put!
101 Rob Kirton // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:39
Toony: Check out Fergusons career prior to Man U. If Allardyce had acheived the same as him - he would have done the double prem & FA cup and won a European trophy next season with Bolton; before then moving on to a new challenge at Newcastle. It is a fair comparison. Aberdeen when Ferguson took over were a “Bolton” in Scotland. Go check it out. The two guys cannot be mentioned in the same breath never mind compared….
102 daryl // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:40
not mcclaren, o’leary, redknapp
possibly mark hughes (he’s not bad given what he has done with wales and blackburn)
shearer could only advise with his bbc committments.
SO WHO IS LEFT……
103 LeazesEndLoyal // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:43
Well done Rob, looks like you have a bit of footballing intelligence, Aberdeen broke the Old Firm hold on the Scottish league with Ferguson in charge…… Oh just to mention Toony he also won the UEFA Cup with Aberdeen, when the UEFA Cup actually meant something!
104 Rob Kirton // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:45
I personally don’t think that Keegan should return, best not look to the past and that sort of thing. However……
If Keegan was fired up sufficiently to return to a game he had walked away from just to be bloody minded and prove a point (he doesn’t need the money). What sort of results do people think he could achieve?
105 Nev // Jan 10, 2008 at 9:49
no one who currently has a job in prem would come to us … were too inconsistent
the only positive thing from sam leaving is that ashley and mort can appoint there manager and have it there way from now on

Nev - sarcasm (i.e. comment RE: O’Leary and Coleman) never works in times like this!! You’re obviously either not a NUFC fan, or someone who is a little bitter that Fat Sam has gone.
Rich - at comment 93…you tit!! You hope we get relegated…F**K OFF! I can understand if you dont like the fact that the manager has been booted after 8 months, but wishing relegation on the club just coz you dont like this decision is ridiculous you idiot!!

James: “My heart says it is Mourinho. My head says it is Keegan”
- I’d settle for either :0)
112 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 10:19
Rob - I agree, I dont think it will be Keegan. It really would the confirm to all other supporters in the land that all we want to do nowadays is recreate the good ol’ Keegan era. I dont doubt he would be better than Sam Allardyce, but I dont think the atmosphere is right for him to come back now, unless it’s in a supporting role.
The one good thing about this whole scenario (except the fact that The Fat One is gone!) is that there’s a whole air of hope and expectation….I’m actually excited about the club for the first time since Ashley took over the club!
I genuinelly dont understand all the fans on here who seem ready to kill themselves because Sam has gone….we were FECKING AWFUL!!! There was not one good thing about the team over the past 6 months or so!! I agree that he has got rid of the tat from defence and signed some good players (Smith, Geremi and Barton not included!!), but apart from that he’s taken us backwards! There was no sign that he was ever going to do anything either….his record is not that good to all who says it is (and CERTAINLY NOWHERE NEAR what Ferguson was….even before he took over at Man Utd!).
If I’m honest, I wanted Sam to stay until the end of the season so I could laugh at all those who supported him when we finished in the bottom half again, and totally despondent from a piss-poor season!! I’m sure the plan was to get shot of him then anyway, but obviously something pushed that forward….Ashley listening to the fans I guess!?
113 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 10:21

Redknapp is happy on the South coast, fantastic news as I’m very happy for you to remain there too.
Timing has to be blamed on this transfer window which has forced MA’s hand.
BSA left with a huge cheque in his back pocket and funny how Bobby Moncur said just a couple of weeks ago that it looked like he’d been playing to lose…………..

Sam Allardyce signed three players for £18 million. A striker who hasn’t scored a goal(1), a fullback who hardly ever plays and when he does shows no commitment or endeavour(2) and a midfielder whose only recently been released from prison and is prevented by law from playing(3). Why would Mike Ashley trust Sam Allardyce with more money?
1 Alan Smith
2 Jose Enrique
3 Joey Barton
Every bad signing Sam Allardyce made, makes it more difficult to rectify the situation. Newcastle have played predictable, uninspiring football all season. Had Sam worked harder to keep Solano at St. James
, the little maestro would have made his clockwork team tick.
The top managers installed in recent years are all bookish and intellectual. Arsene Wenger and Avram Grant would always win a game of chess against any of the managers Newcastle have had over the last ten years and that’s what management is about, meticulous thinking.
Newcastle need a manager who wouldn’t look out of place as a University professor. Of the English Managers perhaps Gareth Southgate or Nigel Clough could do the job, but could they outsmart the best? Newcastle must break away from English insularity and xenophobia. My number one choice for next Manager of Newcastle is: Oswaldo de Oliveira Filho
He has trained teams like Corinthians, Vasco, Fluminense, São Paulo, Flamengo, Vitória, Santos. In the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 2006, he managed Cruzeiro EC, after being sacked by Fluminense. He is currently the manager of Kashima Antlers in Japan.
He has successfully won the Campeonato Paulista, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, FIFA World Club Championship, he also made it to the simifinals of the Copa João Havelange, and Copa Mercosur, and also third place in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 2001. Having joined Kashima Antlers in 2007, he led them to a J. League championship and Emperor’s Cup double in his debut season.
