What Every Newcastle Fan Should Know

January 10th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 110 Comments

Here’s some good information the Newcastle Evening Chronicle have got from a source close to the Newcastle Board of Directors, and every Newcastle United fan, who wants to be cheered up should read it. :D

chris-mort-pensive.jpg

Chris Mort - Thinks - how do we get entertaining football at the club?

Why? Because the board wants Newcastle United to be trying to win every single game with attacking and entertaining football. What a concept.

That source told the Chronicle today:

“The current board lost patience with Sam due to his unwillingness to play a more attractive brand of football.” The manager only seemed to want to win ugly.”

“While nobody minds the team winning ugly now and again, nobody at club wanted that every week.” “However, at the minute they felt they were losing ugly.”

“They had tried to keep the pressure off Sam by being supportive and coming out in public to back him, but felt enough is enough.”

“The board was willing to find new players, but it was always a doubt whether they would be signed under Sam.” “They speak to players here a lot of the time and they are not happy with the style of play.”

Meanwhile, the talk coming from the dressing room was presumably one of discontent. But we’ve heard this before, and that’s certainly not what the players had been telling the press, during Sam’s short reign. The same was said about the dressing room when Glenn Roeder left, but we’re a bit skeptical about this always being the case when our managers get sacked.

Speaking on what the players thought, the insider added:

“It is not what they are used to.” While it is probably successful at other clubs, it is not working there.”

“The players want to play a more attacking style of football.” “They are perfectly entitled to feel that way because many of them have played in the Champions League.”

“It is not about losing to teams like Manchester United.” “Newcastle United should be trying to win every game.”

“The problem has been they have been losing to Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth and Derby. Newcastle will be making additions to the squad during the January transfer window.”

That’s almost exactly what the fans’ complaint has been, about Big Sam. So it looks to us like the Newcastle Board know what they want - and that’s exactly what the fans want. Hey - good times may really be ahead after all. Hope so. :D

The other thing that should cheer us all up is that Mike Ashley is a very successful businessman and he usually gets what he wants.

That’s great, because he wants his team, Newcastle United to be very successful.

Comments welcome.

I hope this is very true and they bring in someone who can get the flare rolling at St. James again. That cuts the list of potential managers down a bit doesn’t it?

  • 2 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:47

No news on the manager then, or is it Mike Ashely as the manager, Mort as the Assistant……

Abramovich interfered too much, hope we are not going the same route

  • 3 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:50

The first thing our new manager needs to do is to get “the source” by the short and curlies and hang him by them from the Tyne Bridge!

No wonder the media have a go at us - someone cant help from opening their mouth. This has gone on for years and has got to stop.

Even so - if they know what we’re after they’ll be on the phone to a unemployed Portugese bloke at the minute…

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:50

Pete - all the reports are saying it’s either Redknapp or Hughes - a little disappointing - but I’d take Hughes given the choice.
At last he seems to know what he’s doing - but he would still need time at Newcastle - just like Sam - but he plays more attacking and good football.

  • 5 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:51

Sky Sports News JUST said Blackburn say there has been NO approach for Mark Hughes.

    Hmmmm..

…you presume that a manager has already been sorted so maybe no Mark or Harry.

well i guess someone could be lying!

  • 6 Ed Harrison // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:52

    TER - same here :D

  • 7 Beardsley's Love Child // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:53

    Let’s play a game:

Which league is known for the most passionate, fickle, opinionated fans who are born with ridiculous expectations, demand for attractive football and overly grandiose sense of selves and clubs?

Which league breeds autocratic managers with short term success timeframes, thick skins, immense egos and who can handle the expectations of fans, owners and a hyper critical media that examines them like mono cellular organisms and who bays for their heads when they fail?

Which league embraces ruthless owners who control nearly every aspect of life their clubs, making decisions and dumping money like they are playing FIFA Manager 2008 and Grand Theft Auto at the same time while balancing the financial success of their “vision” in the face of a rabid fan base and fickle, critical media?

Why Italian Serie “A” of course.

NUFC is more Italian than English. Hence an Italian Gaffer, or one that has put up with the chaotic insanity of Serie A with success, would fit wonderfully.

  • 8 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:54

Dear lord, I need some news on the new manager. Give me anything… I just cannot believe we haven’t got someone lined up

  • 9 Leo // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:56

suaulyy is that a real word? or a typo ed?

the newspaper obviously cut and paste alot of them quotes to make it look and read they way they wanted it…. read it again and see for youself. at the end of some of the sentences it makes no sence, as though something has been cut off…. anyone agree?

  • 10 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 16:56

Ed - I simply refuse to believe that we had got rid of Allardyce for the Redknapps and Hughes’s of this world - it just doesn’t make sense.

It happend so quickly someone must have become available who was too good to turn down.

  • 11 Toon Al // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:01

i miss the chronicle… its hardly ever tht good, but i dont get many papers here which cover toon everyday, nd its a nice break from the pc screen haha

i need to find out something soon, or im gonna go mental

  • 12 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:02

Ed, Hughs too much like SA imo

Redknapp would be my first choice. A fantastic manager.

  • 13 simon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:03

I totally agree with you Graham, my first thoughts are whoever they had targeted had thought about it and come back with a yes I’ll take the job response yesterday which meant they could call time on Sam. I am hoping the name on the managers door will be a world class one, fingers crossed we’ve had enough dross, let the good times role again.

  • 14 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:05

Why is everyone so anti ‘Arry, he is absoulutly amazing as a manager.

    Tactical genius
    Motivator
    Shrewd on the transfer

    He ticks all the boxes…

The only problem is that it will probably be bad PR that he won’t talk to the BBC

  • 15 Edd Case // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:05

Ashleys best mate, forget his name, that Spurs person, said that Ashley “will give the fans what they want” or very similar words.

Well, seemingly, the majority of fans want Jose Mourinho, Mike…

    Over to you.

  • 16 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:06

Pete - please no! yes he’s done great at Portsmouth - possibly taken them as far as they can go. Just like Allardyce done with Bolton, but this is a massive step up.

Yes Portmouth are better than us this (and last) season, but in order for the fans to show patience we need a big a manager as we can get.

Dont like the look of this though - Keegans odds are getting shorter by the hour…

  • 17 Dragoner // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:06

Graham your post has given me hope :)

  • 18 Chris F // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:07

this ’source’ wasn’t quoted in an Alan Oliver article by any chance, was it?

if it was, then the ’source’ will most likely be his own backside, as that’s where he gets most of his stories.

  • 19 ToonKing // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:08

this really cuts the list…….. who remain ??

Van Gaal, Pellegrini, Hiddink , Riijkard come to think of it they are pretty few and far between these attacking managers in the modern footballing world.

  • 20 Bryan // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:08

Can anyone tell what this CPU thing is that keeps popping into this site? and why its happening?

  • 21 Ian B // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:08

Graham - I wouldn’t scoff at the “Redknapps of this world”.

Apart from the fact that Portsmouth roundly trounced us playing good attacking football with resources far smaller than ours; Redknapp has a great track record.

Even before he took over Portsmouth, I saw a report from someone where they did a statistical analysis of what happends when clubs change manager mid-season. What they found was that it makes no difference. The new manager does no better than the old manager - with one exception - Harry Redknapp. He was th eonly manager who managed to make an instant major difference - and he’s done it at multiple clubs.

  • 22 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:09

Keegans odds are coming in, ‘Arrys are starting to drift (1.9 now)…

‘Arry is a top manager… Mourinho wins ugly… exactly the same as Sam.

Keegan/Shearer are already gods, wouldn’t want to sabotage that

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:09

Trappottoni - He would be immense, but hes too old.

  • 24 Obafan // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:10

Midjew - Where is the link for the article that Rovers / Hughes is not been contacted? I like it though, cause Hughes is a SA type..

I also believe that the manager will be a big name, as MA is a businessman who wants the job been done properly and he will have a yes by now from his man.

Just don’t understand why everything takes so long???

  • 25 Edd Case // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:10

Pete - It IS NOT GOING TO BE ‘ARRY ‘BUNG’ REDKNAPP.

Ashley has been in with the fans for months, he knows what we want and if he has any pride in himself being the best etc etc - he’ll only want a WORLD CLASS manager who really shows the world that he means business.

Mort and others said we might get a signing (player) in the summer to show the world that Mike meant business but clearly, Mike didn’t trust Fat Sam - now he’s gone, someone else who is Ashley’s appointment, can come in and we may well start seeing BIG, BIG signings at this club…

It has to be Jose Mourinho as he is the best who’s available.

  • 26 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:10

sports rumours sweeping north east that harry redknapp has arrived at newcastle airport

  • 27 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:12

Obafan - Was announced about 10 Mins ago on skysports news on TV.

Havent talked about that since, but they have mentioned it a couple of times.

  • 28 ObaFan2 // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:12

I’m not a Redknapp fan cos I remember him slagging the Toon off a few years ago and he’s implicated in the bung row and he’s just dodgy IMO.

  • 29 Tom_Toon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:12

pete your starting to fk me off, your probably one of the very small minoirty that want redknapp.

  • 30 Tom Cairns // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:13

Harry has not done anything, he has kept a couple of clubs in the prem, is famous for being ’shrewd’ in the transfer market when in actual fact just buys loads and occasionally a few of them actually turn out okay. does he not remind anyone else of just a dodgy car salesman. no where near the level of manager we need here. thank god he’s staying on the south coast.

hughes looks like he could mature into a good manager but yet again has not proven anything and we cant take anymore gambles with this club.

the only problem comes if the actual level of manager we need for us to be successful wont come.

  • 31 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:14

Not sure whats gonna happen and that is SO annoying, just wanna know who they have lined up and when is he gonna take over?

I Bet we wont hear till AFTER the Man Utd game.

  • 32 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:14

Im on my way to Newcastle Airport now to sabotage that wrinkly cockney barrow boy!

  • 33 STEWY // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:16

can we not have keagen and shearer as his number two learning the ropes

  • 34 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:17

I JUST dont see the point in gettin harry redknapp or mark hughes cos if we do WHY get rid of Big Sam.

There basically the same and it just seems stupid cos we will have to fork out 5m and we will end up with same kind of manager. SO this leaves me to believe that AS THEY ARE GOOD BUSINESS MEN they have sorted out a BRILL manager thus they dont mind paying off big sam.

Come on MA and CM, lets get a world class manager.

On Goal.com there is lots of news that bayern are tryin to replace Hitzfeld with Murinho, rickard or hiidick.

IF this is true then we could get Hitzfeld.

    What do u think??????

  • 35 BrettToon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:17

    Pete is obsessed with ‘Arry

  • 36 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:17

Midjew - I couldn’t take it if we didnt here anything till next week - I work from home in Newcastle and ive done bot all today! same tomorrow if nothing happens

  • 37 Richard // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:17

How about Thomas Schaaf of Werder Bremen? One of the most attacking teams in Europe.. Maybe he could bring Diego with him as well and give us some much needed creativity..

  • 38 Big Gaz // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:18

    Redknapp NNNOOOOOOOOOOOO ! !
    Huges NNNOOOOOOOOOOOO ! !

My mate’s mother who knows a bloke at the casino who looks after the coats said they heard Sir Bobby on his mobile to a bloke who sounded like he was from Portugal. Bobby was saying that The Pig and Whistle in the Bigg market had had new lino put down and new duct tape on the chairs and it was always full of lasses. The bloke from Portugal sounded impressed. You just never know ; - )

  • 39 Michael Awin // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:19

We must get Hitzfeld or Mourinho, they are world class PROVEN winners, a true statement to the rest of the country and the only two names i would be happy with.

Anything else is a step sideways and total waste of time.

Keegan is no miracle worker please people stop being fickle and having pipe dreams about making us decent again, for Shearer its too early and would ruin his heroic status if things went wrong.

    end of story.

  • 40 Leo // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:20

i see what you mean, redknapp does look like a dodgy car dealer. as did sam look like a painter and decorator

  • 41 Tom_Toon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:20

    Hughes over Redknapp any day.

  • 42 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:20

Graham - I know i didnt even go to work ha ha, and yet for my dedication i have heard nothing.

HOPEFULLY i am just being pesermistic and we will hear AT LEAST 2morrow.

  • 43 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:21

I didnt know the pig and Whistle had undergone major refurbishment - must go there soon

  • 44 Leo // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:22

pig and wistle. one of my very first nights out in town someone said go their its dead good, we got rejected on the door. not for being underage but for looking too smart. its a shit heep to put it mildly

  • 45 nufctj // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:23

Why so many Moronyo hopefuls? I don’t understand it! He is a master of negative football. So he did some time with Sir Bobby, that was a long time ago. Chelsea always won ugly, differnece was they did it with world class players. The best money could buy. The best attacking manager in the world today is Wenger. How come no calls for him? and no Italians please. Redknapp or Jol would be fine.

  • 46 Hadrian // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:24

pete stop reading into that bs :) if you put money on harry im sorry .
    its keegan :P

  • 47 carl // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:24

it wont be harry or hughes, ashley isnt stupid!!
also i believe that sky sports say hel be british to make more money on sky bet!

  • 48 Leo // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:24

because arsenal is his home, why would he leave them for us, they are well respected around the world. he doesnt want to loose that

  • 49 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:25

you think the pig & whistle is on Ashleys list to visit after the next home game?

  • 50 Midjew // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:25

nufctj - As much as ANYONE would love wenger he would never come, if he left arsenal it would only be to barca i think!

  • 51 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:26

Wengers in with a shout for the title so Ashley knows not to waste a phone call

  • 52 Iain // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:31

If it was going to be a choice between ‘arry and Mark Hughes, I would go for Hughes every day.

I personally have a feeling that it is going to be something involving Keegan and/or Shearer. This would seem to be a move that would be guaranteed to generate maximum exposure for the club and be seen as a fan pleasing move (whether it would be successful is a different matter!).

  • 53 Edd Case // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:33

    So far…

Blackburn have ruled out Huges leaving.
Everton have ruled out Moyes leaving.
Pompey have ruled out Redknapp leaving.

    So, realistic Prem managers left…

    Benitez? Ouside chance at most.

Eriksson - oh no wait, I said realistic.

    O’Neill - nah…

Curbs - no thankyou, and ruled himself out (SkySports earlier today)

Coppell - Doesn’t quite light the Xmas tree does he? Good as he might be, I can’t see it.

Southgate - Anyone from either the dark place or Smoggland not welcome.

    Keane - as above…

So, not much choice at all in England…

Therefore, it HAS to be a manager from overseas somewhere, OR one that’s not in work.

If Ashley really, really wants to show the Newcastle public AND the world that he means business, he needs to best manager in the world, or certainly one of them.

Everything, in that sense, still points to Mourinho.

  • 54 nufctj // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:33

my point was that we want a manager which plays attacking football. Of course Wenger will never coach here. But why so many Moronyo fans? He is not an attacking manager. Redknapp or Jol would be a better chocie than him. People just want Moronyo because they feel it would somehow prove we are a “massive” club. We will prove that on the pitch, someday lads, someday!

  • 55 Howie // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:38

we might be all dead by then nufctj. anyone watching sky sports news. is it true redknapp is in newcastle airport

  • 56 Bill f // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:38

I have been looking at various signs and portents to try and ascertain what is going to happen.

I have looked at the Hidden Bible code, Nostradamus, Mother Shipton, the Enochian Angel code of Paracelseus, the entrails of a chicken, the Runes, the Chuthonian texts and many other sources that I can not mention as it may drive the readers of this site (more) insane.

From all of this is have found that a saviour will come from the North, South, East or West. He(or She) will be either short or tall, with or without hair of a specific colour, and will be of a certain age.

He will lead the long lost northern tribe of Toon from out of the wilderness into the promised land of everlasting glory. With many cups that will overflow with great success or not as the Gods decided to go off down the pub before they had answered all of my questions.
And will get to me later in the week.

  • 57 valle // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:38

Attacking football is mostly mastered by managers at absolute top clubs imo… Even tho i somehow doubt he would ever come to this fickle club i really think its Mourinho

Backed Keegan, and Harry is going the other way now… good job I avoided it…. going to trade Keegan in a bit though ;)

    Green up :D

Harry would be a brilliant manager for Newcastle United Football Club. FACT.

    Hope this helps

  • 60 Hadji // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:45

    Imagine Mourinho in Newcastle
He could bring us the cream of Europe even without being in Europe this season
    Veloso,Moutinho,Quaresma,Lucho,Van DerVaart without any problem.

  • 61 nufctj // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:46

    Bill F, good stuff! lol

Regardless of who our next gaffer is.

NUFC will be a top 4 club when they have a squad on the pitch that consists of no less than 90% European, African and South American players. A reflection of the sad state of British (especially English) football.

and there is not a chance in hell that Moronyo is coming here.

  • 62 Tom_Toon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:46

Im still pretty sure its one no1 has mentioned, Trappotoni or Deschamps, trust me.

  • 63 Clouded // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:47

I wouldnt mind seeing Martin Jol. He is attack minded and we would have the possibility of getting some dutch players

  • 64 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:48

El Tel would be great too

    Venables & Robson combo :D

  • 65 LiamBirchy8 // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:49

i want martin jol, he plays attacking football and has acheived top5 twice and has more to come.

if he came in ashley would back him with tranfer money.

    chimbonda 7m
van der vaart or diego 14m
    arshavin 5m
    diarra loan
    emanuelson or drenthe 5m

he also would be able to bring the beloved geordie carrick to his home team in the summer as he has past exp with him. Jol also was good with the youth policy at spurs and mort and ashley seem to like the idea of buying young uns.

so JOL 2 TOON over and out

A crap site report but nonetheless a rumour containing Hiddink. Damn, I wish that would be true (and that we could land him).

  • 67 Pete // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:54

Would these big named foreign managers really cart themselves and all their family to the toon when managers seem to last a week ?

  • 68 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:56

I read this article directly from the Chronicle website earlier today, did anyone else see Anal Oliver’s mistake about potential managers? He said “the club are trying to get a manager who is already employed by a club…which rules out Ottmar Hitzfeld (and others)”….now, I’m not being daft by saying that he is still at Bayern am I???

  • 69 Tom_Toon // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:57

    no you arent daft.

  • 70 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:57

Graham (comment 10) - I agree….I know allardyce was crap and desperately needed the sack, but surely not for someone of exactly the same calibre (Redknapp or Hughes)??!!

    WE NEED NEWS….PLEASE….IT’S KILLING ME!!

  • 71 carl // Jan 10, 2008 at 17:58

Pete (Comment 60) - you’re the first person on here that I’ve seen suggesting Venables I think? Now, I’ve been thinking the same thing! I dont know if I’m cracking up playing this waiting game or wot, but if none of the ‘big names’ are willing to come to us, I think I would rather Tel over Hughes or Redknapp.

I was a bit scared to mention it earlier in case I got ridiculed, but now that someone else has gone first……lol

Would anyone else be happy with Venables?

Also, I see that Keegan’s odds are tumbling….RAPIDLY!! He’s down to 7-1 now!!

  • 75 Sven Goran Eriksson !!!!!!! // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:04

im more excited bout the new bankrole we are guna get frm gettin a new manager as he clearly seemed tht he didnt want to back allardyce i still obviously care about who the manager is guna be and im desperate not to be hughes or redknapp in fact any british manager as they are all crap it absoloutley has to be a world class foreign manager who knows hot to pass the f**king ball on the floor

  • 77 nufctj // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:05

So say it is The Return of the King…

Then I am sure we will see more attack on the pitch…

    but…

How would Keegan attract players to NUFC any more than BSA would have?

Keegan makes no sense to me, and if we are in the business of appointing failed England managers why not just go out and get the best (or worse, as it were) of the failures..McClaren

Steely, I am still adamant that ‘Arry would be marvelous at our club. I really really don’t want Mourinho - he is a good manager but not really the right man for us.

Terry would be awesome, the only problem being is his dodgy past, I am sure Beardsley/Shearer would be up for being his assistant at some point too.

  • 81 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:10

Well there’s quotes (even in the article above I think) from Ashley’s mate who says that the owner wants nothing more than a manager who will attack attack attack! And that Ashley was also holding back funds to give to whoever comes in because he didnt trust Fat Sam with the cash….so it could still be a great Jan TX window hopefully!!

  • 82 Steve_48 // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:10

“I would love it, just love it” a source close to KK is reported to have said recently, well, maybe not, but my God what an absolutely fantastic idea to have the King back, just think of it for a moment…

  • 83 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:11

I was just sat stroking my black and white and cat when he started coughing up a furball….as it coughed up I’m sure the noise sounded like the word Jose….is it a sign??????!!!

    :)

  • 84 Steeley // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:14

Well I would love Jose anyway…thats for sure. I’m a little worried that he may not be able to eminate what he did at Chelsea (lack of funds etc), however, I’d certainly be willing to give HIM time!

I’m of the same opinion about Keegan I think…can he really bring back what he had before? I’m not sure he can, although again, I’d be patient with him.

I really think it would be good to have a fresh outlook on things (i.e. someone who hasnt managed in the Prem before), perhaps Lippi (dreaming again!) or Hiddink, Scolari, Hitzfeld….loads of options!

  • 85 ToonKing // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:15

that’s really strange Steeley cause i have a black and white dog, well not really but she’s blood is black and white :) , and she loves to sing. I blow a whistle and she sings with it, strangely the note went something like Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

    Surely a sign ;)

  • 86 Graham // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:17

  • 94 Davy // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:32

Good news - but they need to give time to whoever they appoint to achieve this.

  • 95 scott9 // Jan 10, 2008 at 18:51

mark hughes plays like allardyce id rather have rednapp

  • 96 rich // Jan 10, 2008 at 20:36

    Its still not right Ed.

I cant believe people think that a manager can just walk in and a team will instantly be playing like Barcelona or AC Milan.

I agree Sam’s record wasnt amazing, wasnt the worst though. He did just inherit a team from Greame Souness-Roeder!!

Time is all Sam needed, not 24 games and 10 million (subtracting transfer fees he recouped).

i dont feel as bad as when Bobby Robson got shafter by Freddy but i still feel bad, when are going to stop being a joke of a club and actually act like a proper top premier league club.

Again, go and google how many years it was until Alex Ferguson won any silverware in England….. 3 years.

but hey, if we dont learn from history we are doomed to repeat it or summit.

  • 97 scott9 // Jan 10, 2008 at 20:41

keegan wont risk it hes a hero on tyneside he wont put that at risk it could go wrong i hope harry or guss hiddink gets it or even scolari

  • 98 Witters // Jan 10, 2008 at 22:17

    LOUIS VAN GAAL!!

  • 99 Michael // Jan 10, 2008 at 22:39

It can’t be Jose because as part of him leaving Chelsea he can’t manage another club in the Prem this season, and he wouldnt want to come anyway.
As for Hughes, redknapp etc.. its simply laughable. These managers havn’t managed under this kind of pressure and are in the same bracket as Allardyce. It would be another waste of a season and money if we were to appoint one of those.
It’s about time we went for a foreign coach. The last was Gullit, which of course ended badly. But since then we have had a string of poor british managers (not including Sir Bobby). So now it is time to go foreign again.
My opinion is that it should be Houllier.

  • 100 scott // Jan 10, 2008 at 22:58

for me tbh id love to see keegan back. hes in a similar situation to the last time he took over … as in a new board who are willing to spend money on the right manager but i dont think he will be back if im being honest. like a few have mentioned already i dont think he’d want to risk damaging his reputation. but yeah id love to see him back and hopefully he could replicate just some of the entertainment that us fans would like to see

maybe he’d come back in another role other than manager to assist the new man and give useful advise on what the fans would like to see but hey who knows at the moment

  • 101 Aussie Geordie II // Jan 10, 2008 at 23:12

Ashley, via Mort (?) has indicated he wants to bring back the ‘feel good factor’ to the club. High profile manager, more geordie players (carrick? would be tough but a great signing).

Hiddink is awesome, but unavailable. Mourinho is my personal choice, but scholari would probably be good too. Ottmar Hitzfeld is also available….

  • 102 scott // Jan 10, 2008 at 23:30

then again maybe not seeing whats just came up

redknapp to be approached in the morning ah well

  • 103 bob // Jan 10, 2008 at 23:52

jus wanderin every1 has heard the breaking news on sky sports that newcastle are to make an official approach for Redknapp in the morning

I AM GUTTED THE SAME AS SAM!!!

  • 104 Phil,Gosforth // Jan 11, 2008 at 1:17

Please stop with the Ferguson had time @ Man Utd bollox.
The game is totally different now.Relegation didnt mean losing £35m.Plus he had the richest club in the country to buy whoever he wanted from wherever. Now everyone has money. The next few years will see a levelling-off of the standard of clubs in this country.I hope we will be near the top of that tree.

  • 105 Rich // Jan 11, 2008 at 8:02

    Gosforth Phil -

i suppose you are one of the poeple who want us to be playing like Brazil as soon as we have a new manager, and in 4 weeks time when we havent won a game youll be on Sky Sports News chanting ‘Shearer, Shearer’ when we sack our new manager for not instatnaeneously changing our team from top to bottom with a magic wand.

    grow up man.

and as for loosing 35Mil for getting relegated pfft, how much money do you think we have just thrown away sacking SAm & his staf and hiring a new manager?

Lets just say the cost of sacking one team and repalcing another is going to be around £20mil.

we deserve to get relegated with fans like you.

  • 106 mark // Jan 11, 2008 at 9:05

    Hughes plays ugly football

whats the point in getting in redknapp or hughes?!?! mayaswell just stuck with sam, its the same kind and they will need time.

  • 107 Ozzie dave // Jan 11, 2008 at 9:45

Is it Coincidence that Hitzfeld is rumoured to be moving on

Please let it be to NUFC

  • 108 Karl Fenham Hustler // Jan 11, 2008 at 9:56

To be fair, Keegan had a pretty mint team, ahead of its time at least.. When he went to Fulham they werent exactly shit hot attackers.. Although i would Love it, LOVE IT if he came back

  • 109 Whumpie // Jan 11, 2008 at 10:56

A wee snippet about Mike Ashley: this man built up Sports Direct, and then, spotting a bit of rough water ahead, got the best people in the game to float the company on the stock exchange, selling most of his shares at a huge price on flotation day. He then allowed bad news to accumulate, issued a big profit warning, plunging share value by 63%. He then bought his shares back, making more money than god, while calling the city boys ‘crybabies’.

THIS IS NOT A MAN TO MESS UP.

The financial pundits have described him as an ‘unreconstructed genius’. He and Mort will get it right. These are exciting times.

  • 110 Newcastlefan // Jan 11, 2008 at 11:14

I said I would love Big Sam to go, but who would replace him ? We all want the special one, but would he come ? Harry is not a world class manager, but his brand of football is. The big criticism I had with Sam is he played negative football, and he played them out of position. His tactics were awful . We would not get any of these problems with Harry. He has worked with the best, he plays good football. Pompy were nowhere without him.
