Results of Newcastle Manager Poll - Jose Tops

January 11th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 201 Comments

We now have the results of the Newcastle United manager Poll we have conducted on our site over thee last couple of days.

jose-mourhino-3.jpg

Jose Mourinho - almost 3 times the votes of second placed Ottmar Hitzfeld

We had a total number of votes cast of 1511. Jose Mourinho came way out on top garnering 34% of the total votes.

In terms of the number of votes cast for each individual candidate, here are the results.

1. Jose Mourhino 512
2. Ottmar Hitzfeld 184
3. Kevin Keegan 178
4. Gus Hiiddink 146
5. Louis Van Gaal 110
6. Marco Lippi 82
7. Alan Shearer 55
8. Marco Van Baston 55
9. Felipe Scolari 46
10. Martin Jol 46
11. Harry Redknapp 43
12. Sven Eriksson 18
13. Mark Hughes 18
14. Steve McClaren 18

It’s interesting that Newcastle fans seem to have gone for a foreign manager even though Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has said he wants a British manager. Only Kevin Keegan in 3rd place is in the top six and Alan Shearer came in 7th, probably due to his lack of any management experience.

Mike Ashley’s top 2 candidates for the job, Harry Redknapp and Mark Hughes came in at 11th and 13th places respectively.

That’s your vote. Let us know what you think.

Comments welcome.

    jose mourinho!……..jose mourinho….etc

    YES PLEASE

  • 2 DC Toon // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:42

The chances of Jose are slim to none. Why would he come to a struggling team with no European prospects? Above all else, I want a team that wins. Attractive football would be nice, but is a second priority. Maybe in a few years, a manager of Jose’s calibre would consider Toon, but certainly not now.

    him and his mum

  • 7 Graeme // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:51

It can hardly be a suprise that we want the best man available for the job, can it??

The redknap story is starting to look farsical now, based on fiction. I dont believe he is the right man for the job at all.

Moriho would be an immense manager for us and will be my choice until he turns us down.

  • 8 Bobby Ollox // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:55

My brother’s girlfriend has a friend who works in B&Q in town - she has just seen Mourinhio in buying some new curtain rails, and tape measure for ‘measuring up some new carpets’.
My brothers name is Benny, so he is BOllox as well.

  • 9 Ian // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:57

can you send the results to the club like many others my season ticket will go if its another mid table manager like redknapp me and my mates have all been shouting for morinho and hitzfeld since sam was sacked everyone wants a top class european manager

  • 10 Hadrian // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:57

how people can vote shearer, mclaren and keegan is beggars belief.

  • 14 Jason // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:59

    Hardly a true reflection Ed.

You didn’t put Hitzfeld up till yesterday and had 2 polls running, one which didn’t have his name on.

    Anyways

    I still want the German

Can’t belive all this BS about Redknapp. They have not scored a goal at home for over 2 months, even BSA had a better record than that.

    WHY WHY WHY D’Ashely
To the tune of Tom Jones song

  • 15 geordie down south // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:59

yer i saw him in b&q aswell buying some superglue .. so he can stick his hair back on wen he loses it bcoz of the stress.!!

  • 16 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 13:59

Ed - is this confirmed that Ashley wants an English manager? If so, can you tell me who confirmed this? As I’m led to believe it was a SkySports “source” which means absolutely chuff all!

Still, Redknapp in 13th eh…..is this gonna turn into another Sam-style witchhunt if he doesnt do well initially….it could well do you know as it seems there a HUGE amounts of people dead against that appointment!

  • 17 Newcastlefan // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:00

If only !……… Why must we appoint an English manager ? It is not up to us to fill the failing gap. Maybe the reason why English mangers have failed is because the top four clubs are run by none English managers ! As reported those clubs do not change thier manager too often. Of course the top job has been ruled out for the twenty years. At least he is British.

  • 18 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:00

Realisticly what world class manager is not going to risk there reputation to come to us. why should they when they could go to proven BIG clubs who win trophies. We’ll never get anyone like Hitzfield, Scolari, or Morinho ..

Harry Redknapp is probably the closest were going to come to a great manager. And hes record off instant success is prity good. Only 2 seasons ago pompey were dead and buried at xmas and he saved them, now there in a much better position than us.

If he gets the job, he should be given at very least 2 years and full sopport.

  • 19 Jason // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:00

Hadrian, Can I ask why not?

  • 20 Cyprus Toon // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:02

Only problem with Mourinhio is, he can’t manage anothe rpremiership club until next season, so stop dreaming boys, its not going to be him, so next in like is Ottmar Hitzfeld! not a bad choice but he’s not British, So how about Shearer & Keegan? its more realistic than Mourinhio!!!

  • 21 Simon // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:02

NUFC fans are amazing.. looking at the results of the poll you can see it seems to almost perfectly place where NUFC would end up in the leauge if these managers got the job. ie Jose = 1st . Rednapp 11th. and Maclaren right at the bottom!!

  • 22 James // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:05

Cyprus Toon - when Jose flew in for the England job he confirmed that he is allowed to work for a PL this season and that there is no clause in his contract. I watched him being interviewed on BBC news. Skysports did an Interview with their source instead cause Jose said they were full of ***** and wouldnt speak to them :-)

  • 26 Domininufc // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:12

Yes I am not supried that Jose is top of the list but we are not being realistic. If you asked me for a list of who I would want in my bed my girlfriend would be way down the list after Britney, J-Lo etc but it will never happen!!!

  • 27 Grambo // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:12

    any of the top 6.

  • 28 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:14

John, realistically, does it take ANYONE two years to stamp their authority on a club. I hear all this crap about managers being given time to steady the ship etc etc, however, why does that have to be the case….if someone comes in and doesnt look like they have improved the club one iota (in fact, have taken it back a step) a la Allardyce, then their job should be questioned. I udnerstand giving someone time to gradually improve. All for it in fact, but if Redknapp comes in, or Hitzfeld, or Jose, or ANYONE comes in and we arent doing better within 12 months then its only right that they competence should be questioned.

To conclude, John, I say giving ANYONE “at very least 2 years” is nonsense! If they are improving, no matter how slowly then yes, support and back them. If we’re still wallowing in mediocrity by the end of next season, then whoever is in the hot seat will feel the heat again!

  • 32 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:17

I think the one we may have a chance off getting is Lou Van Gaal, but after that we have to choose from Harry Redknapp, Mark Hughes and Martin Jol .. We wont get any super couch..

  • 33 Domininufc // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:21

Ok sorry I mean the “old” Britney but you get my point lol

  • 34 HonoraryGeordie // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:21

Martin Jol would be a better bet than Arry ‘not about the money’ Redknapp. at least then we would have connections with young dutch kids, play exciting football and not be a complete laughing stock!

i think i should find MA and ask him to opt for a non england manager
    i m from hk!

  • 40 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:25

if you’re talking about news of the world then i was more focussed on Danielle Lloyd…

  • 41 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:25

Fair enough GM, obviously he’s not going to meet Ashley, but it does look ominous if he has cancelled his press conference you must admit? I mean, how often do those press conferences get cancelled? Pretty much never….unless something is happening which he doesnt want to answer questions about!

  • 42 Jason // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:25

    John…….Chelski with Mour

  • 43 Domininufc // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:25

Ok well how about Kelly Brook for manager. Would attract players, the post mach interviews would be great and would still be better than Fat Sam.

    Anna Freil as Assistant Manager

  • 44 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:26

john. just a guess but jose? (hint hint mike ashley)

  • 45 Howie // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:26

i know a lot of people are angry but looka at other options. i would mind harry at all:
    jose mour-not gonna come
    hiddink- wont come
hitzfeld-wants to take over swiss after bayern
keegan- look to the future, not past
    shearer- no experience
jol- ramos came in and said the team were unfit. not great option
    hughes- plays defensive mainly
realistically it was down to hughes, redknapp or jol. for me redknapp s decent option.
we are a big club but not a massive one. we couldnt attract mourinho.

  • 46 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:27

    Souness with liverpool

    Hate those scouse bassa’s

    Roy Keane Mackem’s ( 1st div title)

That’s just off the top of my head.

Sven not doing to bad at City at min

  • 48 Jason // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:29

And Billy Zane as Defence coach. No’s a good back end

  • 49 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:29

John, I never said anything about winning anything now did I?! All I said is that the manager has to show some improvement to the side that he takes on. Did Alex Ferguson not do that??? Yes, actually, I think he did improve the team. I agree, he didnt come out and win the league straight off, but that’s not what we’re asking as supporters!

To be honest, I cant see us getting any worse, no matter who the manager is (well, perhaps McLaren might manage it! lol), so I dont see this scenario happening, but my thought was a general comment.

What does it take for some of you to realise that giving the manager X amount of years will not suddenly solve the problems! If the manager is shit, no matter how many years you give them they wont make you better….so why settle for it!? However, if the manager has anything about him he will make improvements…which in turn will negate the calls for his head.

    Nuff said.

  • 52 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:32

cool then..As long as we get a manager and throw a 100 million at him for a new defencee and some genuine creative polayers we should win something :)

Jason - cheers for the backup. See John, it doesnt always work like that.

Here’s a question I would like you to answer:

If Sam had stayed on as manager until the end of the season and had got us relegated, do you think it reasonable to keep his as manager for another year (which would fulfil your minimum of two years criteria)?

  • 55 Domininufc // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:32

  • 56 GM // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:34

  • 57 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:36

thats a redicolous comment Steeley..Were in no danger off getting relegated at all … we only need 14 points and were safe were hardly relegation fodder..

    Wake up

  • 59 obafemimartins // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:37

Sven wouldnt leave city when they are in the top 4.
Keane is mackem. Keane’s sunderland the republic of ireland team are basically the same. if sunderland win their next 2 games and we lose them they are level on points with us. they are in the relegation zone.

  • 60 Jason // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:37

In all seriousness boys and gals,

We consider ourselves a big club becasue of OUR support. We may have been as our great history shows but at present we are a average team with a littered past of stupidity, helped by the press and some idiotic players.

Now under Ash hopefully things will turn around and things can move on up but we can all speculate who we want who we should get etc etc.

We all have to make sure whoever Ash puts in charge, as it’s his Fantasy Football team now, we do one thing

    Stay

    UNITED

Keep the faith and sing your hearts out for the lads

Black and white till I die!

  • 62 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:37

Jason, would you also think that Martin O Neil shoudl off got the sack for finishing 11th last year with Villa?

  • 63 Rob Kirton // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:37

Forget all of the names being bandied about, it does look very much like Redknapps job. Don’t want it but i am going to have to lump it like everybody else.

Ashley being out of the country is no hinderance. He does not run the club. Chris Mort will handle everything and present Harry before the press, I expect tomorrow - though maybe Monday given the football fixtures this weekend.

Redknapp will be heading North this weekend, though I suspect going nowhere near the Stadium of Light.

    All other bets look off

I fear that if both he and Joey are banged up next year , we will become a bigger laughing stock (if that is at all possible)

  • 64 steve // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:39

Hoddle - you’ve just made that up, I’ve not heard anyone anywhere mention that useless god freak

  • 65 James // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:39

A better question and one that has not been posed is :

Who has Ashley gone to meet in Hong Kong? Far away from the media glare of the UK. Perfect for a meeting.

  • 68 Uppompeyboy // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:39

Why would Redknapp cancel his press conference?? Could it possibly be beacuse he wont get asked about the impending Mackem Game? Just about another subject being bandied about ever so slightly in the papers, on the net, on the telly etc etc etc.

Why do you think he left training early? Nowt to do with the 3000 paparatze parked at the training ground gates stopping any fekka from coming and goin?

His players, are prparing for a big match tomorrow, and the twats from the press are doing thier utmost to spoil this prep!!!

Harry will stay put, believe me. I heard a rumour down here that Jose Mourinho is being lined up for the job in newcastle hence no comment from their boss.

  • 69 carl // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:40

Okay they are having a good away run, but at home they are awful; didn’t score since the 7-4 against Reading, a game played a while ago. So with the funds available he must aim higher.

I’m starting to get crazy (perhaps I already was ;-) ) because all the stories can’t be wrong, but I just can’t figure out anymore which are…

John, I have never said anything about sacking managers, who should go, how long they get or anything. Just replyed to you question of who has won anything in there first season.

I was one of the idiots who was prepared to give BSA at leat 2 seasons to see where he was going at the end of season 2 but that’s not happened now the balls in Ash’s court.

I dont EXPECT overnight sucess but would like to enjoy the Gallowgate Atmophere at least 14 times a season. I love every away game, we drink we stand wie sing.

If I could ask for one thing other that a trophy it would be to bring back standing and the Gallowage I remeber from the late 70’s till the 90’s

    THE SCOREBOARD…..THE SCOREBOARD

  • 77 Obafan // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:46

I wonder what the players think about this situation?

    1. Those who have to play tomorrow.
    2. Those who are in Africa will also follow everything even if they have to focus on the ACN…

  • 78 Toonster // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:46

I am absolutely devastated if is Hoodlum Harry!!! If Harry Redknapp is an indicator of the ambition of this board we are in serious trouble. Mr Redknapp has won NOTHING in football, if we were by some miracle to ever get to Wembley under his reign he’d have to buy a f**king map to get there!

This could have been the perfect opportunity for MA and CM to get a good proven manager and personally I couldn’t give a toss if he was English, French or Martian as long as somewhere on is CV is says WINNER!!!

  • 79 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:47

  • 87 Kevin Hann // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:53

cooldj - you will get closer when you hear the name of the manager. Especially if it starts with M.

    I mean McClaren, of couse.

  • 88 Ross // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:54

Redknapp would be a step down from Allerdyce in my eyes, at the best Redknapp will get us challenging for a Uefa Cup spot not challenging the Big 4 like we used to and shud be now. Redknapp and Allerdyce havnt won a thing between them and they probably never will! We need a foreign boss in, someone that has actually done somthing recognisable. I think everyone knows that there isnt an English manager that we could get that is going to get us to where we want to be.

Notice all the journos jumping on the bandwagon - “Underacheiving Geordies expect to be challenging for the top four, etc, etc. How dare they, blah, blah” Even Fergie has had his rant. Surely, every supporter in the land should be expecting his team to be challenging for honours and playing entertaining football. At least Geordies share something with hammers and spurs fans - passion. The rest of the south should Shut TFU. You are not worthy!

My wife’s, sister’s, friend’s, niece works at Newcastle Airport as a car park robot. She saw Moronyo come in this AM on a flight from Portugal. He then got into a car with Harry Redknapp, Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan and Wor Jackie (go figure?) The car then levitated and flew off in the direction of St James Park. This has been confirmed by skysports, link here:

The two most successful teams in the prem. div.
during the last decade are Man. U. and Arsenal.
One with the largest ground plus fantastic earnings and a manager with almost unlimited funds. Also leveraged to the hilt and barely making the loan payments. This was a team that once developed its own young talent but now depends on signing expensive talented players from wherever available.
The other team with a state of the art brand new stadium, also a big earner(last seasons top Prem. earner i believe) with money in the bank and a manager who`s strategy is to buy young talented players and develope them slowly into a system, that results in both a winning side (an unbeaten season)and a style of football that could be described as poetry in motion.
Soh! in chosing a new manager, think carefully
which of the two would you chose?

  • 96 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 14:59

and now to prove my observance ;)

  • 98 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 15:00

John - how politician-esque of an answer you provided! It wasnt a silly question at all….IF (and I’m not saying it was going to happen) but IF Sam Allardyce….in fact, ANY manager in the world, had got us relegated this season after being in charge for a year, would you have stuck by them and still insisted they have another year in the job?

Remember, this question is posed only in the context of questioning your theory on “at least 2 years of unstinting support” for any manager.

    An answer, please…

  • 116 John // Jan 11, 2008 at 15:10

Steeley thats a crazy question….If Newcastle at any stage in the season were in reelegation i would be gunning for the manager off course.

I think we should’nt even be in the bottom half off teh table bever mind in relegation..

Ok, In a dream world, If we got relegated with sam or anyone else of course he would get the sack, and I would fully expect that..Jesus…

Thats like saying if Liverpool got relegated , or Man city got relegated do you think they should get the sack..OF COURSE…

The point i was making was that were not going to get Morinho, Or Hitzfield, or Scolari or anyone like that.
Our best shot would be Louis Van Gaal and after him would be Redknapp, Hughes or Jol..

Barring we dont get relegated , I would like them to get there own team which i think in 2 transfer windows would be possible which would make up one year , then give them another year to make us successful which at the state were in would be Eurpope and maybe win the Uefa cup after that.

If you hav’nt already noticed , we have already tried your way under Shepperd and that worked great did’nt it LOL

“As far as United supporters are concerned, I would guess that Jose Mourinho would be high up on the list, and my information is that Mike Ashley’s best pal Paul Kemsley, the former Spurs chairman, has mentioned this to the Newcastle owner.

There was a clause in Mourinho’s release deal from Chelsea which supposedly bans him from working for another team in the Premier League this season.

But a chairman in the Football League told me today that United could could get around this with a payment of around £1m to Chelsea.

This is because United’s stock has fallen so low that Chelsea would not be too bothered if Mourinho was to arrive at St James’s Park.”

  • 156 Steeley // Jan 11, 2008 at 16:05

John - cool, that’s that put to bed then. I’m not one of those people who appreciated Fat Sam’s sackings….although I do agree (even with the Robson sacking to a small extent) that when each of them were sacked that they needed to go. It’s not coz we love sacking people, it’s because of the appauling appointments which Fat Fred made in the first place. I think it was essential that Sam went, but perhaps not as quickly if the best we can appoint in his place is Arry Redknapp.

Anyway, I’ve just seen Arry’s win ratio for his time at Pompey - 31% for the first time he was there and only 38% during his current reign….very similar to Sam’s…..doesnt sound promising does it!?!?

skynews has portsmouth chairman speaking and he sounds as if he knows Harry is coming here

  • 177 James // Jan 11, 2008 at 16:42

What we have to realise is that Ashley has a LONG TERM PLAN for Newcastle. He may have found out that world class managers have been saying no to the job, and he has to build the club up to an attractive one so that the likes of Mourinho would never see the need to turn it down.

So he may feel get Harry in for 2 years to turn things around and then go for a world class manager to take us to the next level.

Ashley is more concerned about our club that any of us. He’s the one that has put £200 million of his own money into it to save us from crippling debt. He wants the same quality football and trophies. But we simply have to trust his long term plan regardless of what the short term brings us.

  • 181 ObaFan2 // Jan 11, 2008 at 16:47

I can’t agree James, in your statement you are saying this is a short term fix, that is not what we want. We want stability, a team and management we can all get behind and Redknapps appointment will devide the fans and it’s the fans that MA needs to make his business succesful.

  • 183 Zx // Jan 11, 2008 at 16:51

Fact is, Mourinho won’t want to join us, he is probably waiting for an offer from Milan or Barcelona. We are not as big of a club as we think, get real…

But if Mike is going to pay 5m a year for Redknapp, then I just feel sorry for his pockets. What a waste of resources.

  • 185 Davie // Jan 11, 2008 at 16:54

I think everyone needs to stop getting so worked up about this; whatever decision is made Ashley will be making it… The only thing us Newcastle supporters can influence is the sacking of a manager! So these polls are utterly pointless. Who ever comes in, how about we just support them and the team like we should, after all that why we are called ’supporters’ .

surely this will be another case of a new manager watching the match from the stands ?
i was hoping this would have been sorted by now and the lad’s know who the hell there playing for there jobs for , apart from us!
still have faith in ashley not being as dumb as suggested landing redknapp . guys a billionare , redknapps hardly playing with the big boys is it ? were about to get a big phat tank parked on our lawn !! i hope :P

Bill F - yes we play Manchester United - hey I’m going to have the preview etc out in a couple of hours - let’s hope the lads can put up a fighting effort.

    mike…your back

  • 190 Obafan // Jan 11, 2008 at 17:06

Javier Aguirre would also be a good manager. He was succesfull at Osauna and is now at Atletico Madrid, if I’m not mistaking…
But I really doubt if he will be the one.

Vicente del Bosque, no thank you. I don’t know if he is in the football business ATM.

Zx - Indeed £5m is a lot of money for a manger who has not proved anything at a big club.

  • 191 Obafan // Jan 11, 2008 at 17:08

Does anybody have a clue how the players reaction is??

They will be focussing along with Pearson for tomorrow and it will be very tough at Old Trafford.

The game is on Prime (Belgian television) I’m really going to search if Jose or anyone else is in the stands ;-)

  • 192 Tom_Toon // Jan 11, 2008 at 17:12

Couldnt care less about the manager now, its dragging on to much, just get Chikhaoui, he wil sort our problems out, the guy is going to be world footballer of the year soon.

  • 193 cooldj // Jan 11, 2008 at 17:16

who let a portsmouth fan on the website? They’re not be trusted with reponsibiltiy and should rarely, if ever, be allowed out from their cages.

  • 194 ObaFan2 // Jan 11, 2008 at 17:54

  • 196 chuck // Jan 11, 2008 at 18:47

    JOSE MOURHINO…….
THE ONLY MAN CAPABLE FOR THE JOB….
    FORGET McCLAREN, HUGHES, REDNAP ETC…
IF ANY OF THE ENGLISH MANAGERS ARE APPOINTED MY SEASON TICKET WILL BE HANDED IN…. AND ILL NOT BE BACK AT ST JAMES’S.

  • 197 goalcentre.com // Jan 11, 2008 at 19:50

Hands down. Mourinho is the best bet for the job. Sadly, Arry is in the driving seat now.

  • 198 chuck // Jan 11, 2008 at 19:57

instead of ashley or mort appointing a manager why doesnt he ask the views of the fans, considering that it was us the toon army who is to blame for sam’s exit, surely our thoughts should be considered on the new manager..

  • 199 Andreas // Jan 11, 2008 at 21:19

A bit late Ed but when did you speak with MA personally and got told that he deffo will have a British manager?
