Breaking News – Redknapp Rejects Newcastle

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has turned down an offer to succeed Sam Allardyce as Newcastle manager, according to reports just coming in.

Harry Redknapp – has decided against joining Newcastle United

The 60-year-old had been the favorite to take over from Sam Allardyce and Sky Sports News reported he held talks with the Tyneside club on Friday night in London.

Portsmouth reportedly gave Redknapp until lunchtime on Saturday, to make a decision, and he has finally decided to stay. The following statement was issued by Portsmouth Football Club this morning:

“He thought about it overnight and decided to stay,”  “He wants to stay in the job that he’s been doing so brilliantly.”

Redknapp arrived at Portsmouth’s Eastleigh training ground on Saturday morning and told reporters he was staying with the south coast club. Sam Allardyce was sacked by Newcastle on Wednesday, and Redknapp soon became Newcastle’s number one choice for the job.

The word yesterday was that it was almost a done deal with huge amounts of compensation up to £5M/year being talked about. But Harry has decided to stay at Portsmouth, which will no doubt delight the Portsmouth faithful.

Newcastle will presumably now turn to their second choice, who we understand is Mark Hughes. But with Newcastle fans not being too keen on either Harry Redknapp or Mark Hughes maybe Newcastle will reconsider who they go after.

Two potential choices now could be Jose Mourinho, who is the Newcastle fans’ overwhelming choice and even Alan Shearer, who has reportedly told people in Barbados, where he is on vacation, he may be interested, if offered the job.

Comments welcome.

Lets get it straight. He has not turned down the offer, as he was never offered it. He has only said he will be staying at Portsmouth. No offer was made to the pompy board or to Harry Redknapp.
Apart from that have people forgot we have a game today. I would not put it past them to beat Man Utd.

i’m with George, i would bet my house we never even talked to him.

But something should really happen now……………

anyways to lighten the mood a little :

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley was walking down the road when he saw a little old lady carrying a bag of heavy shopping.

“Can you manage love?” he asked.

“F**k off,” she said. “I don’t want the job”.

    LOL HAHA

Ed, that certainly throws a lot of your previous articles into the rubbish bin!!!!!!

Perhaps we can now have faith that MA has a far greater vision for the club than a dodgy car dealer being in charge.

How can you possibly say that “Redknapp rapidly became Newcastle’s No1 choice to take over”????? On what is this comment based? He isnt even favourite on your own poll. Has anyone that matters, from NUFC, made ANY comment about ANY replacement manager?? Not that I’m aware of!!!!

This nufc fan hopes that common sense will prevail and the Chairman or the Owner will announce their decision within the next few days.

For what little its worth, I would love to have Mourinho in charge of the club I have supported for over 40 years.

Graeme – what are you talking about? He was most certainly offered the job informally if not formally – was in Toon last night to see them; and now we are again in the Souness situation where the incomer knows he’s not first choice. Tell Mourinho he’s the man they wanted all along, and see if He buys it! Pants. They wanted Harry and it’s backfired. They thought £5m pa would be enough to get him and it isn’t. We are now worse off than we were with BSA. As a writer in the papers today says – we could run our own manager of the month award.

I don’t have Sky so haven’t seen the actual Arry interview.

Did he say he had been offered the toon job?
Did he say he had met Mort or Ashley or spoken to them?

If either the above two are yes then it looks like Ashleys “plan” is in ruins.

If no then we can presume we have a top european coach coming and the media are simply conjuring anyone who’s british and who they think would take the job.

I’ve seen no article stating from the toon saying the next manager will be british and suggest that this is just another ass wipe comment from the media.

    Come on Mourinho

Don’t forget to sing if you’re at the game today 🙂

I like Mark Hughes but im unsure of him becoming toon boss
Van Gaal is AZ boss … and no disrespect we are a bigger club and would odder a bigger challenge
goos track record with barca and ajax
Mourinho would be everyone’s perfect choice but im still sceptical about a clause still from Chelski

Murvar, and just who has confirmed your info???? Harry was on tv in the south last night, about to travel up to the NE for his teams game against Blunderland.

Who was he going to see?? MA is in the Far East, Mort hasnt been seen in days.

Just WHY would they offer ‘Arry £5 million for a job when he is currently earning about £1 million??? WHY would they offer a mediocre manager that amount of money when they can have a top, proven, internationally experienced man for the same price????

Honest mate, dont believe ANY of the crap from the press or Sky, they have no more idea than you or I.

Agree with you Murvar. Ashley and Mort have put all their eggs in one basket. I realised we weren’t getting Mourinho and the likes when they approached Redknapp. It’ll be Mark Hughes next and he’ll probably knock us back aswell.

Half of the idiots on here have never set foot in Newcastle, probably don’t even know what colours we play in!

THere’s pictures in the papers today of Harry, his wife and her sister in a restaurant last night.

There was no sightings of Harry in Newcastle last night!

Murvar get your facts straight before you speak!

Dragoner there has been nothing from Redknapp personally on the radio so stop telling porkies!

It was reported that Redknapp stated it, hasn’t come from the bailed horses mouth!

    Thank the Lord for that.

Dodgy ‘Arry’s decided to stay t Pompey.

He never had a choice to leave tbh, he’s helped his mates by being part of a smoke screen thats all. We’ll see now if a big manager comes in for next Wednesdays game it was all a plan by MA and co.

How happy am I, over the moon tbh.

He was never right for the job and remember his Spurs mate tells us to trust MA he will deliver.

What a great start to the day. Gonna watch Man U game with a big smile on my face whatever happens.

How much reality does it take for some of you guys to accept what you don’t want to believe? There is NEVER the degree of speculation (or betting) like that associated with Redknapp without there being substance to it. And to go now to Mourinho – or Lippi, or Hitzfeld – or even Hughes or Big Al – and say “We really want you” is a hard one to pull off. We all want to be wanted and to be regarded as first choice. No, Monkey’s Heed said last night we should go for Simon Grayson of Blackpool; but he’s too much of a northener. Ian Holloway’s my new bookies’ favourite – good Cockney which is what they seem to want – only they don’t know it yet. Get down to Coral’s before everyone else is my advice………

I doubt he’s even been offered the job to reject. Nothing on the official site so it’s just word play and speculation. And lets be honest here. If Harry was (God forbid) offered the job, he would certainly NOT reject it as he’d view it as pay day. This was just leverage on Harry’s side to get what he wanted out of pompey and well done to Harry’s agent/team for using the press and manipulating words with innuendo to achieve that. Now, let’s get on with the job at o’trafford and play some decent footy. Hopefully by next week, we’d have got Mourinho in 😉
HOWAY! I’m feeling so much more better that it wasn’t Redknapp in the running! Lovely stuff.

I cant believe how little ambition has been shown by the new owners if Redknapp as their first choice. I am relieved that he has turned us down but I am scared to think who could be second choice to someone like Redknapp.

I don’t think we should delude ourselves that Redknapp wasn’t offered the job.

It appears he was in London last night. Fine. It is Mort who will deal with any incoming manager. Anybody *know* where he was or who has been talking to for the last few days.

If Harry says that he had been offered the job and in reality he hadn’t; I suspect Mort / Ashley would have him in even more legal trouble than he is in already. Time to move on.

There are now problems over who we are now to get in. This whole thing about a “VOX POP” and having the fans suggest a new manager is a bit ridiculous. There will never be a concensus, a majority forming behind one candidate.

Ashley / Mort will now have to move quickly, get it right, and we need to put trust in their judgement. My view over their ability to make the right choice is slightly tarnished over the Harry Redknapp saga – however the choice is theirs and theirs only
