McClaren Not Suited to Newcastle Job

11:40 am, Monday, January 14th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 25 Comments

It’s not a surprise that almost every name under the managerial sun is being touted as the potential next Newcastle United manager. But one name that we should take out of the running is Steve McClaren, because there’s no chance Steve will be appointed manager.

Steve McClaren – zero chance of taking over at Newcastle
Don’t get us wrong about Steve, he’s a good man, there’s no doubt about that. But as far as his football management goes, he’s no better than mediocre. He did a reasonable job at Middlesbrough, but never had them too high in the league and the Tees-side team was always very inconsistent. We expect he’s a good organizer behind the scenes, but not destined for greatness as a manager.

His England tenure was of course an absolute disaster but we blame the English FA for that by choosing the manager who upset the least number of people. It looks like the FA learned from their mistake by quickly appointing Fabio Capello, once Steve was sacked.

Where does Steve go now? He would be an excellent manager for a team lower down the Premier league, but we doubt he will be able to land a plum job with one of the better teams in the league. Maybe some team in Europe will offer him an opportunity.

Steve will just have to wait and see what comes up for him, and we’re sure he’s not too short of cash.  But he shouldn’t hold his breath over a Newcastle appointment.

Comments welcome.

Ed, not sure where this story came from not even the lazy london journos have linked us with Steve Mac.

Seems to me like your trying to find some things to fill up column space.

If you want a real story then why not write up a blog regarding how Mike Ashley wants us playing like Barcelona but seems only willing to court 2nd rate managers like Harry Redknapp & Mark Hughes, i believe thats is more poignant than any dross about Steve Mac.

You could do worse than offering Martin Jol
the job. He has a lot to offer and i for one am sorry that he is still not at spurs. + I have a tenner on him joining you lot!

I don’t know who some of you fookers want as manager, but some of you are really deluded! I guess alot on this blog aren’t actual geordies, but some of the suggestions are mad.

I’ve spoken to most I know from home and all the lads don’t want either Shearer or Keegan. It would be absolutely catastrophic to appoint them to lead us.

As for Hughes, I like him, good manager and good style of football capable of attracting decent players.

Who else is out there apart from stupid foreign suggestions?! In the EPL, are there any better managers than Hughes? I hate to say it, but the calibre of managers who could do a job in the EPL is not as vast as we think. Certain foreign managers have stayed clear of the EPL because they know there style of management isn’t suited to EPL!

So who’s it gonna be? Outstanding candidate is Mourinho, but thats wishful thinking on our part! No other foreigners are of quality, but Jol is tried and tested and did a good job at Spurs, but maybe not good enough for us! That leaves only 2 EPL managers who I think are capable to handle Newcastle, Hughes and Moyes, and we all know it ain’t Moyes!

I would welcome Steve McLaren if he came as assistant to Shearer as this is where he has done his best work (European Cup anybody) – my guess is that he wouldn’t accept such a position

Ed, any chance of moderating the language here by some posters?

I’ve heard it all b4 don’t get me wrong but here in type slagging/calling people is uncalled for.

As 4 McClown well enough said.

  • 22 Obafan // Jan 14, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Next one please. Oh and people don’t be so stupid by starting to be unfair to eachother. We are all wanting the same thing, but everybody has got his own view and opinion on it. If you don’t agree then bad luck, but leave it by just saying your thoughts and not by starting to fight (verbally) with eachother….

Sites like this one are fantastic because everyone can say his thought, so don’t let it be ruined by just a few….
