News on the Newcastle United web site is announcing the new Newcastle United manager – King Kev himself – it’s Kevin Keegan.
Kevin Keegan – returns to his football home – Newcastle United
There’s really nothing more we know right now – but it’s good Newcastle got the word out. Mike Ashley has made the choice most Newcastle fans craved – the return of King Kev.
This is official news – because it’s on the official Newcastle Web Site – saying more news to follow.
But Kevin Keegan didn’t care about youngsters – and even stopped the Newcastle Reserves side – which is why we lost so many good youngsters like Michael Carrick, so not sure how Kevin ticks all the boxes that Chairman Chris Mort laid out yesterday.
The 56-year-old former Manchester City manager was Newcastle manager in his first ever appointment from 1992 to 1997, and will return to St James’ Park as Sam Allardyce’s successor.
Gerard Houllier and Didier Deschamps were strongly linked with the position in the last couple of days but the club unexpectedly turned to Keegan. maybe after all the support shown in the polls – he was our second favorite to Jose Mourinho with 20% of the vote compared to Jose’s 40%.
Kevin was initially linked only with a partnership role with Alan Shearer and he’s been running his “Soccer Circus” in Glasgow since leaving Manchester City in March 2005.
But he returns to Newcastle, having said on Monday:
“I’m not ruling myself out or in. It’s a club I love, everyone knows that.”
Keegan took Newcastle to promotion back to the top flight in 1993 and came close to winning the league title in the 1995-96 season when we led Manchester United by 12 points before finishing in second place.
Hey – maybe his first signing can be Richard Dunne, his former center-back at Manchester City.
