Keegan Offered Job Sunday Morning

It is bring reported this afternoon that Kevin Keegan was offered the job by Mike Ashley last Sunday morning. He accepted the job that day and then kept quiet about it until it was finally announced Wednesday afternoon. Only his wife Jean, also knew about the deal.

Smiling Keegan and Mort yesterday – Chris surprised Keegan open to offer

The negotiations took place between Chris Mort, Mike Ashley and Kevin Keegan the morning after Harry Redknapp had turned down the job on Saturday morning. And according to the Evening Chronicle, the deal was done and dusted by the time Sunday was over.

Chairman Chris Mort, as he stated yesterday, hadn’t thought they could get Kevin back to the club, but when they talked to him, it appears he was already turned on by the challenge of returning to Newcastle United. Kevin was said to be very open to the offer.

We have no idea how much Keegan was offered in terms of compensation (wages), but it will be the best financial deal of his life, that’s for sure. It is probably close to £18M over 3.5 years, plus some transfer cash he can spend now and in the summer. It’s close to £18M if he’s getting close to what Harry Redknapp was offered. We see no reason why Kevin would be offered less compensation than was offered to Harry.

The transfer amount has varied in the press from £25M to £50M, and we think that figure is probably true. But it’s not just the money of course with Kevin and we think he just bought right into the vision of Ashley and Mort.

Kevin has already stated that once he listened to the two of them, he knew immediately they knew what they were talking about .

He also has made no secret of the fact he likes the two new leaders of the Newcastle United Football club. Sounds as though they moved with lightning speed after the Redknapp rejection and you have to be impressed that they completed the deal under the radar screen.

Great work by Mort and owner Ashley, in both getting the right man and doing it quietly once the Redknapp situation had leaked out badly. The two of them seem to know exactly what they are doing at Newcastle.

It also sounds just fantastic to us.

Comments welcome.

I’m glad we got KK over ‘arry. Keegan obviously has a lot of passion for the club and ‘arry obviously didn’t. The “it’s good to be home” quote as he walked in SJP really says it all.

Anelka would be good, but if we paid 15 million for him I’d be miffed. There are better choices out there. We don’t need another sulky striker.

How much will Ashton cost? That is defo a KK type of player and one for the future aswell. He is better than Defoe, who really is expensive with his £10m.

    What about Arshavin now???

I very much doubt KK is on 18.5 mil over 3.5 years, its more like 10 mil over 3.5 years IMO.

any idea where to watch the stoke highlights?? defoe would be good will owen n martins, with Duff, N’zog and milner buzzin about behind them. should buy a good attackin midfielder so we have 4 midfields for 3 places, keep them on their toes!

Yea Gordon you raise an interesting point. If the deal was done and dusted last week Sunday, what’s the business about him not having a change of clothes?

Anyway, good times I see good times.

10M for Defoe is way too much imo. He is Tottenham’s third choice striker!! We would be nuts to pay that amount of money for a player that has sat on the Spurs bench forever.

Who we should be after is his amazing team-mate; BERBATOV!!
Now that guy is class and I wouldn’t mind one bit if we payed bucket loads of cash for him. If it’s true that Berbatov used to be a die hard fan as a child then the latest developments at St James’ must surely be enough to convince him to sign for the toon.

King Kev Go For BERBATOV not Defoe!!

He used to sleep with Alan Shearer’s replica shirt as a child for God’s sake! He will have no hesitation in joining King Kev as he must have been another of his toon idols.

All aboard for another rollercoaster ride!! – welcome back Kev, but you need a No2 who can take the flack and keep the media pressure away from you – or even chin Ferguson if he gobs off again – how about “Mr BBC” Sir Alan Shearer??

    Ed lets start a campaign to get Berbatov at the toon. Just imagine Berbatov in our starting line-up. We would be unstoppable with him alongside Owen/ Martins! Lets snatch him up before Man Ure do just like they did with Rooney! (the bastards!) Lets put banners up on Saturday’s match reading;
BERBATOV WE WANT YOU TO JOIN KING KEV’S ENTERTAINERS!!

well, i live in Russia and rate Arshavin more than Emre. Although I doubt Shava (Arshavin’s nickname) has enough stamina to adapt to english game.
But forget him, he is no more than a squad player – get Berbatov, he is amazing!

I like others rate Berbatov, however I cannot see Keegan buying him. I don’t think he is his type of player.

Think about Keegans previous signings. To a man they worked their socks off for the entire game. Keegans old philosophy at least was all the skill the world is useless unless you put in a shift and gave it your lot.

He was happy enough to see Anelka go from Man City, as skilled as he is. I’d bracket Anelka and Berbatov together. Natural goal scorers, good footballers though occasionally only 60 minute blokes who sometimes don’t turn up at all.

If Owen ever wondered why Keegan might have had a problem in the past he needn’t look any further….

Lord knows what he is going to make of Viduka :0)

ANAL – You say that you cant or shouldnt pay that much for a player from a league worse than the scottish league? Have you ever watched the brazilian league?!? Its one of the worst, there are a few stars and they go for huge prices. Chikhaoui is the sar of a better quality league and is going for less money, probably about 10 mil, hes worth that.
