Keegan Wants Defoe in January

Newcastle United’s new manager Kevin Keegan is said to want to sign Jermaine Defoe from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

Jermain Defoe – Keegan interested in Tottenham striker

Defoe, 25, has not had a good time of it at Tottenham since he joined in 2004. He is now behind a few strikers, like Berbatov, Bent and Keane, and does not get too many starts at the North London club.

Since new manager Ramos arrived in October it looks like Jermain has fallen even further down the pecking order, and he has been told he can leave in January.

But Newcastle are not the only club interested in Jermaine and it is understood that Martin O’Neil would like to take the striker to Aston Villa, and may already have had talks with the English striker.

It’s reported that Keegan has been given a transfer war chest to spend in January of up to £25m by Billionaire Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, and has now made Defoe his No 1 transfer target.

Earlier today a Villa insider would not confirm stories currently circulating about Aston Villa wanting Defoe, but there are doubts at Villa regarding the fitness of John Carew and the form of Marlon Harewood.

O’Neill is said to be keen to get Defoe into the Birmingham club in January, but the reported interest of Newcastle United with new manager Kevin Keegan now in place, may interest Defoe in a potential move to Tyneside.

Keegan will no doubt start to play a much more attacking brand of football than his predecessor Sam Allardyce, and most forwards would presumably be interested in joining Kevin’s new revolution at Newcastle United.

What do you think?

Will that mean the end of Owen or Martins?
Do we need 3 short, quick strikers?

that is way to many strikers, i doubt that defoe will be coming to newcastle unless owen smith martins amebi or viduka leaves…

if i was manager i would take 5-8mil for owen although if we could get defoe we could keep owen and get 10-15 mil for martins. defoe would score a lot more goals than martins cos martins just doesnt have a brain.

The FA paid all his wages and medical bills and it looks like we’ve made a profit on them, but not the transfer fee.

Think about it for a moment eh?! It’s not about Quantity; it’s about Quality…

    Smith is a better midfielder,
    Carroll is raw,
Shola is a nice lad but not quite the full package,
Viduka is getting on a bit and hardly has the mobility KK will demand,
    Owen is permanently crocked.
That just leaves Oba who could easily walk, once he gets his form back.

Are we REALLY overwhelmed with striking talent? – I think not. Defoe is a ‘fox in the box’ – given the right encouragement he could be great for us

ashton is to similar to viduka carrying a bit of weight and injury prone although ashton is quality, we could have signed him when he was at norwich

Better than Oba and Owen (in his present state)
    definately score 20+goals per season
quick skilful, and has good control

Need attacking creative midfielder(s) more than anything else right now. It is the last ball into the area that has been the weak point for the offense.

thats martins biggest problem he is quick but reacts to slow so his pace counts for nothing and he misses an unreal amount of chances

lol. I’d love to see that mikeygd, but babysteps, mate, baby steps. The most pressing issue is to get the midfield sorted. Faye as CDM with Butt as a back up. Then we need a midfield maestro type to bring in a little creativity. I like Emre, but I think having another player in that mold is essential. Zogs might be that player, but we still need more depth in the midfield. Need to unload shola, carrol should go out on load again. Smith should be second fiddle to the duke. Martins second to Owen. That’s plenty up there for now. We could use more backs too, and dump carr. Rozenal and Cacapa should be given more time, with the new manager. They have proven track records outside the prem and we should get them sorted. If they’re still inconsistent under keegan then they should be moved out, but not just yet.

The Team I’d like to see (after ACN is over) is:

    Given
    Beye, (Taylor, Roz, Cacapa), Enrique
Duff(Milner, Lua Lua), Faye, Emre (Zog), Zog (Duff)
    Viduka, Owen

Bench: Harper, Smith, Butt, and some combo of the players in parens.

He’s young, fit and hasn’t played that many games recently, not injury prone – thats got to be a big focus, no more players with injury records

I think a replacement for vidooka is more necessary than another fast miget, with KK no doubt looking to play fast attacking football with wingers we are going to need someone good in the air, but with the ability to actually get into the box when a cross comes in, not to be still crossing the half way line like fatso
