Keegan After Swedish Striker

There is some news breaking today that Kevin Keegan and Newcastle United are interested in Swedish Striker Johan Elmander.

johan-elmander-1.jpg

Johan Elmander – 6’2″ striker interesting Keegan?

Johan Elmander is a 6’2” striker for French club Toulouse FC and there are reports today that Newcastle United are interested in him. The 26 year old was born in Alingsås, Sweden and joined Toulouse from Brøndby in 2006. Brøndby is a Danish club.

Johan has played 34 times for Toulouse and scored 22 goals. He played 58 times for Brøndby from 2004 – 2006 and scored 22 goals.

He played through the Swedish Youth and Under-21 teams, and has so far represented Sweden 29 times scoring 11 goals. He previously played 28 times for the Sweden Under -21 side and scored 12 goals.

When he was 18 years old he moved to Dutch club Feyenoord in 2000, and was then sent out on loan to Djurgården and NAC Breda, until he finally moved to Brøndby four years later.

Apparently Johan was already on Newcastle radar screen from last November and it may be that Keegan has given the OK to Chris Mort to go after the striker in January. We don’t have a good handle on the fee but £10M has been mentioned in a couple of reports.

What do you think?

Comments always welcome.

We are going to be linked with every single player in the world (apart from any SMB’s) over the next two weeks now, so lads dont get too excited until KK is parading someone at St James!
Thank god the transfer window closes in two weeks so we dont have idiotic reports by mindless, lazy reporters every minute of every day until the end of the season and we can concentrate on our squad getting the team back to where it should be!

i agree, we want a target man with some get up and go instead of viduka. we need to help owen and martins. mind you, perhaps viduka will be a diff man now that we should start adopting a more flowing, on the ground attacking style of footy instead of the style we have been playing under the last few managers. this should suit everyone with the ecception of our poor defenders.

he’s the type of player many would classify as a shade or two under “world class”. early on in his career, he was touted as one of the most promising attacking prospects in europe, though he hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations. keegan might be the man to tap into that unearthed potential though, it would certainly be an intriguing signing…

p.s. expect at least three football manager related positive responses to this post.

elmander is a strong centre forward with a lot of pace and skill…he could even play in the hole….
he can play as a atrget man but we are going to play with wingers and cross it instead of hoof ball…i actually think Viduka is going to do well under KK

I totally agree with Nick C Dean Ashton would be the one player that would suit KK style of play, big, strong, can hold up the ball score goals with his head but someone who also has a bit of skill and can use his feet.

Nick C – whilst I think Ashton is the typical bustling CF – his first touch is atrocious. I watched WHU MC game last week and while he gets into goalscoring opportunities he doesnt link up the play.

Horses for courses I guess – but if we are to play flowing football we need players (and forwards in particular) that can control the ball, hold it up and then pass out to the wingers.

At the right price he might be an asset; we need an alternative to Viduka when we need to change the pattern of our play during a game. Shola can’t do that. I still think Viduka could play behind a front two slotting through those little passes he does very well – like Beardo used to do. Owen and Martins might play together in such a pattern.

Anyone who wants Ashton hasn’t seen him play nowadays. The guy’s a carthorse, he’s not prolific and he’s no way good enough for Newcastle!

Elmander used to play for feyenoord where he was too young and rubbish..was offloaded to danish club BrøndbyCopenhagen where he developed in to a top striker playing under the guidance of Michael Laudrup (the danish equivalent of our own KK) he was top class and were sold to Toulouse a french side which have spent millions in trying to compete with the likes of Lyon for the championat…he is top class striker with a good skill – he´ll do well for us!!!

we dont need him, if we can get carroll to step up to the grade then it would be pointless atm… carroll looks really good and just needs experience.

also that sweedish striker looks soo fat, has he got any pace?

Johan Elmander would be a great signing is we get rid of ameobi however i think viduka will be alot diifferent under kk as under big sam he only played when he could be arsed but i think that was cause he wasnt getting the right balls played to him so he just gave up and stoped trying in the end but under kk its attack attack attack so he will be getting better balls plyed to him so he will be a different player.

Leo*, he’s not fat and aye he got good speed. A notch slower than Oba on top speed but he is a fast striker (i.e ok acceleration, very good top speed).

And no, I do not base this view on FM08 but on what I have seen live and on telly.

C’mon Kev like Ian McP says get after Ashton the closeset thing to Shearer who will thrive the way KK will get this team playing again.Ideal foil for Owen/Martins. If he can stay injury free ???????
Stick with Emre to create in midfield cos he just needs a run of games(without getting sent off) The guy is class and can turn a game in an instant like Beardsley used to do.

anything thats better than smith/butt etc is a start imo.

ashton has looked well dodgy though imo since hes been injured, he used to have a great first touch and link up play well. looks very average at the moment. i would rather wait and see how he recovers long term.

elmander imo is a very good player, i thought at the last wc he was the only swedish player that looked good enough for that level of football.
