Nicky Shorey in Mix at Newcastle

We could have almost forecast that some paper in January would say Newcastle United was after Nicky Shorey, the strong Reading left back, and the Independent today says we are.

Nicky Shorey – solid left back at Reading

We had been linked with Shorey in the summer with Sam Allardyce, but the England International at that time decided to stay at the Reading club. However reports we read yesterday suggest Kevin Keegan is not too keen on our Spanish left back, Jose Enrique, although we thought he’s had two good games against Stoke and Bolton. They are just reports and may not be true, of course.

The news also that Kevin may want Wayne Bridge at the club and perhaps Marek Cech of Porto, has also been mentioned. So left-back seems one position Kevin wants to strengthen. Certainly N’Zogbia is wasted there, and we’re sure Kevin will want to use Charles in a more attacking position.

Nicky started his career at Leyton Orient, for whom he played 15 times before moving to Reading in 2001. Nicky has played 252 times for Reading and scored 11 goals. He has two full England caps and one England B cap – all picked up last year. Romford-born Nicky is 26 years old and stands 5’9″ tall.

We need at least one other left back to fight it out with Jose for the starting position since Babayaro left the club. The news today on Celestine is that he has just signed for the LA Galaxy on a 3 year deal. So he’ll be managed by Ruud Gullit and have David Beckham as a team mate.

West Ham are also said to be interested in Shorey.

Nicky may be in the mix again at Newcastle – what do you think?

Comments very welcome.

Interesting… but it seems like a press-manufactured rumour with very little weight, and no substance. Shorey isn’t coming to Newcastle. That’s my humble opinion.

If all the rumours were true, then this would be our team:

    Richards Cuellar Van Buyten Bridge
    Wright-Phillips Downing
    Berbatov Owen

    Interesting, eh?

ye i think so 2 Mehzeb, there have been dozens of players linked and its not feasible that we’re considering all of them. deco, Van Buyten and Wayne bridge would be just great

Enrique played well for me, his forward play has come on leaps and bounds. I’m liking what I’ve seen. I think under KK he’ll go on and become better.

Ronaldeano I think competition for places can spur players on. Enrique will benefit from shoreys signing and vice versa.

I agree with Kash2 – I think Enrique has done well so far, especially as he had no experience of the Premiership. I can’t understand people are writing him off already.

We need to strengthen the defence with 2 solid centrebacks and an attacking midfielder, preferably deco or van der vaart

Will defo do a job, a left back would be a priority for me along with 2 central midfielders. We need a defensive one and a creative mid. Carrick and Deco would be great, what about the Russian lad, Arshavin also. A right winger would be welcome too….

Enrique is regarded as the most promising left in spain. He is going to be top class, and a regular international.

I’d love to see him as our 1st-choice left-back. Can’t see it myself, though – but King Kev does have pulling power…

We should keep jose Enrique, he has done well apart from a few little mistakes that every young player makes. Fat Sam paid 6 million 4 him and did not play him? how is the kid goin to learn if he is not playing? I hope KK sees potential in the lad cos i do

Enrique’s been very good in the situation he is in. A 19yo needs to have competition for their position, he will only become a better player from here.

We need some creativity in the middle desperately and a quality centerback, it will happen this week definately and they will not be panic buys, they will be quality players im sure. KK knows what he’s doing

Speaking of defenders anyone reckon rozehnal should be given a chance as a defensive midfielder thought he looked good against bolton and pretty creative too. Range of passing was good and broke up play well. Would have been my toon man of the match

I think the important point for Wor Kev is to build a class squad and to do that these are the players I think we should be interested in, and this is just a start. But why not Richards, Berbatov, Carrick, Lennon and Lahm instead of the likes of Shorey, Wright Phillips, etc:-

    Left Backs:- Lahm, Heinze,Bridge,Arne Riise.
Right Backs:- Micah Richards, Daniel Alves, Hutton, Finnan, Chimbonda.
Central Defenders – Mertesacker, Metzelder, Ledley King, Wheater, Woodgate.
Wingers:- Lennon, Van Der Vaart, Giggs, Bentley.
    Midfield:- Gattuso, Scott Brown, Barry,Carrick,Macherano.
    Playmakers:- Riquelme,Arshavin, Scweinsteiger.
    3rd Forward:-Gudjonsen, Deco.
Forwards Klose, Berbatov, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Ashton.
Squad players:- Novo, Podolksi, Bocanegra, Ben Haim, Shorey
then we can get rid of the likes of:- Geremi Ameobi Martins Barton Carr

nick shorey is a good player and would be a good addition.but people should lay off enrique,i think hes played well for someone thrown into a bad defence and 1st year in premiership.evra at man utd had bad 1st season but they stuck with him and hes 1 of the best in premiership now.enrique is a perfect left back for keegan, hes fast and likes to get forward and is not seen as i of the best prospects in spain for no reason.give him time,we should be concentrating on getting a right back and centre back.

Not Shorey’s biggest fan, Personally I’d like to see Enrique given a run. I think he’s looked quite good the last 2 games. As for SWP, what’s everyones obsession – the boy couldn’t cross a road.

Even though there is no substance to this rumor I believe that Nicky Shorey would definitely improve our squad and would be a realistic target (unlike Lahm and Heinze). Shorey would also provide competition for Enrique who is the best young Spanish left back and is going to be a regular for the Spanish national team. Shorey is proven in the premiership and we know what he’s capable of but Enrique is young and still developing. My verdict is that Shorey would be a realistic but unlikely buy for us.

before looking at left backs or any other positions we desperatley need a central midfiled player ( a quality one) we are really short of quality in that area and when we have strikers like martins owen n viduka u need good cm especially if u want to play the ball on the deck.

Shorey is decent but I’d rather have Lee Naylor of Celtic.
