Keegan Wants Defensive Reinforcements

Kevin Keegan seems determined to bring in an experienced center-back in January, if he can manage to sign the right player, in the next 9 days.

Daniel van Buyten – seems to want Newcastle move

Kevin talked to the Newcastle Journal today:

“I’m not thinking of bringing Kevin Kilcline back, much as I like him,” “But if I’m honest, they just need somebody to talk to them more middle to back. Steven Taylor will be a real leader and already he’s got leadership qualities.”

“ But if you look to the side of him you’ve got players new to the Premier League.” “I think we are a club who can go and get big players if they are the right players,”

“That’s absolutely 100%. We have to look at the situation in reality. A lot of players don’t move at this time of year. If they do it usually hasn’t been that successful.”

“We will be trying to fetch two or three players in but we will not fetch them in just to make the numbers up. They’ve got to be players who can play with what we’ve got and improve what we’ve got.”

Stephen Carr, Abdoulaye Faye and Steven Taylor are the only players in defense with previous Premiership experience, and that has been a big concern at the club this season, and the reason for some of our unsteady performances in defense.

Two players that have been mentioned at center-back are Sol Campbell of Portsmouth, and Daniel van Buyten of Bayern Munich. 6’5” Belgian van Buyten played for Kevin at Manchester City in 2004, and looked a steady player at the back, and good on set plays in attack. He could be available from Bayern for a low £1.5M, and we think that is the more likely deal to be made in January.

We cannot really see Harry Redknapp letting Sol go in January, even though he seems to have become a Newcastle fan of late.   😀

Here’s 29 year-old Daniel van Buyten’s playing record:

Years Club App Goals

1998-1999 Charleroi 19 1
1999-2002 Standard Liège 57 7
2002-2004 Marseilles 76 12
2004 Man City (loan) 5 0
2004-2006 Hamburg 61 7
2006- Bayern Munich 37 3

2001- Belgium 38 4

What do you think?

Comments always welcome.

Well, Ed, if last nights post bares any weight then Riise would be a class addition not just for LB but also LM, and his set piece ability. I think Sol Campbell and maybe even Richard Dunne would be good signings for us at the back! Thats probably all we need in terms of defensive signings. We definitely need 2 players for midfield. Arshavin is being mooted again, could be a good signing but I read that Lucho of Porto is available and Fiorentina are trying to sign him for £10m. He would be a class signing! Perfect player for our midfield, a REAL GENERAL in the middle with all qualities!

Van Buyten would be a good buy, but Campbell would be better, he is still a very good defender and will make Taylor improve hugely.
But what we really lack is creativity, perhaps Zoggs will provide this playing in the middle but we need more! an Elano type will be perfect!

I’m just worried looking at our fixture list! We are only 6 points from safety! The players we have dont look up for a relegation dog fight!!!!!!

Kash2 – would love Riise and Arshavin at the club. Andrei would also love to come to Tyneside and he’s Keegan’s kind of player.
Just hoping Riise didn’t play last night because Newcastle are in for him. 😀

Alex we are 7 points from safety and probably 8 if you take in goal difference – all 3 bottom teams lost at weekend so we gained a point. Agree it’s still too close for comfort though.

woodgate. bring him back. is fit, but cant get his game for boro at the moment because of wheater and huth. he oozes class and is a talker. plus he only lives down the road. i would make an offer for him. plus nicky shorey and then that will do us at the back until the summer. although, if any one bids for alan hutton, then we may have to go in for him. midfield is my concern. we have no one who can put a decent ball into the box. we are crying out for a creative midfielder , sum one who can pick a pass, do something special to win us a game/create chances for our forwards. we are linked with beckham this morning, as if he is going to give up all that money to come back home. diego for the centre or midfield would be good. michael carrick is going to cost too much but he would be good also. there is lots of players i could name, but we just have to wait and see. up front, we need a striker who is fit and can put the ball in the net. someone different to what we have. berbatov or ashton would be my choices if we can get them. i do believe if shearer was no 2, berbatov’s hero, daft bid in, who no’s. who no’s, its a long shot which i can not see happening but u never no with newcastle.

why would we sign riise? ashley gave us 30 mio…is it wise to spend 10 mio for a player who plays in positions where we already have: enrique, n’zogbia, duff, kadar, also milner, troisi, ngo bohang. that position is NO priority…so why??

For £1.5m we can’t really go wrong with V.Buyten, he’d make a decent backup if we have any more suspensions or injuries plus his ariel pressence on set pieces could be beneficial. Would still like to see KK be ambitious in the transfer market – perhaps a bid for M.Richards?!

Also, whats this about Ashley talking behinds the scenes about luring Becks to SJP…anyone else heard anything on this? Rumor has it the MA has the contacts to make it happen, plus he still has some stakes in Adidas and with Beckham being the face on the brand it could be a masterstroke for merchandice sales!!

nightfall – Keegan is not happy with Enrique and we don’t have any cover for LB. Riise would be awesome purchase plus I don’t think he would cost 10m. But I agree with you we need creative midfielder most.

Just adding to K.Hann’s comment about KK not happy with Enrique – did anyone else think Enrique didnt like passing to Duff against Bolton? It was as if he’d do anything with the ball apart from give it simple to Duffer, and then when Milner came onto the left there was plenty of passes down the line to him… :-\

I think Riise would be a good signing, a bit like Robert with a deadly left boot!

Ed Harrison – No offence to you but saying we are 7 points ahead and maybe 8 if you count goal difference, just backs my point in that you know next to f**k all about football. Stick to the NFL.

That’s a real bad joke? VAN BUYTEN a leader in our defence???? sure, and then put ROZEHNAL beside him and the clown show can begin…

hopefull (keeping all fingers crossed) KK does really not buy this useless and very bad defender!

As reading KK’s interview today I would mostly expect CAMPBEL to be signed…but I’m not really impressed on that move. But coudl accept that (could be worse if we really buy BUYTEN).

But still the main part is missing: mdifield! and why shouldnt we get back our geordie boy CARRICK

riise fits the keegan mould of ‘attacking defender’ perfectly. We definitely need a creative midfield player, arshavin seems the most realistic. Van Buyten for 1.5 is no risk.

We do not need Riise. He’s not particulally talented, can’t beat a man (so midfields out), has no pace and on top of that he’s a ginger. He works hard, but then so does Alan Smith. The only real positive is his sweet left peg but as he’s so slow if he gets in position to shot it then takes him 3 days to get back to the left back position.
    And he’s a ginger.

Well I guess there will be no signing before the weekend. Rather guess there will be 2 signings at the mid or end of next week…

ChrisM wrong side of the bed this morning? Ed is doing a smashing job and you need to button up.

All we need is a couple of two point conversions and for someone to get hot behind the arc and we are back in with the big boys!

Tom_Toon I believe people are taking the chronicle’s observation that KK was omitting poor body-language to Enrique as him not liking the player. Personally I dont believe KK will have given up on the boy after one game.

ToonRich I also noticed that some of the players did not look like they wanted to pass the ball to one another. But for me it was almost all of the midfield players, it as if they dont get along, no comradery and my biggest complaint of Duff (shit) since coming here is that he doesnt play for the team and looks far too selfish on the ball for the TOON.

    Howay the lads
