With all the excitement going on over the last week, about Kevin Keegan’s return to Newcastle United, we haven’t covered the acquisition of Tamas Kadar, our new 17 year old defender from Hungary who signed for us late last week.
Tamas Kadar – moved to Newcastle from Zalaegerszegi
He is now the 3rd youngster that has joined Newcastle, along with Swindon’s 17 year-old Ben Tozer and Le Havre’s 18 year-old Wesley Baheng. Tamas has also talked to the official Newcastle United site today, and says it took him all of a matter of seconds to decide to say yes to Newcastle United’s offer for him.
Turns out that Newcastle have a big following in Hungary since Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle side played Ferencvaros in the UEFA Cup in 1996. In that tie a David Ginola wonder goal gave us a 6-3 aggregate win in the second leg at St. James’ Park.
Tamas said today:
“I know all about Newcastle United, it is a very big club with a very big following in Hungary,”
“I know all about players such as Alan Shearer, David Ginola and the Kevin Keegan side.â€
“When I found out that Newcastle were interested it took me just a couple of seconds to say ‘Yes, I want to go’.”
Kadar is one of the best young defenders in Hungary, and his fine performances for club side Zalaegerszegi earned him a Hungary Under-21 cap last year. Not too bad for a 17 year-old.
Tamas continued:
“This is a very big challenge and opportunity for me.–My aim is to get into the first-team but first I must work very hard and prove myself.”
“I cannot wait to get started and hopefully this will be the start of a very successful career with Newcastle United.”
Tamas Kadar is Zalaegerszeg’s central or left sided defender, and it looks like we paid a fee of around £900K for him. Tamas had trials at both Bolton and Newcastle United in December but chose Newcastle over Bolton.
The young Hungarian is a first team regular in Hungary, and his favorite position is in central defense. He played 14 times for his former club Zalaegerszeg, and scored one goal and stands 6’2†tall. He turns 18 years old in mid-March.
We think Tamas is a fantastic acquisition for the club, and we’d like to see more of these talented youngsters through the door at Newcastle. We think he’s a real star in the making. 😀
Comments very welcome.

Comment #1Has any of our foregin based supporters seen him in action?
I’m all for the youngsters coming into St James, we should have a very good youth team in the near future – Kadar, Tozer, Caroll, Krul, Lua Lua…I’d also like to see them get used in the first team even if its in the cup games?

Wesley Ngo Baheng, not Wesley Boeteng.
it’s good to see us bringing youngsters in, but i’d still rather we concentrated on bringing through good young local (or at least English) lads too.
