Keegan - Give Fans a Team to Shout About!

January 23rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 93 Comments

Kevin Keegan has told his players they will receive a warm and noisy reception for every game, if they start playing well and play to their capabilities, and prove to the Newcastle faithful how much the famous club means to them.

Kevin Keegan - give Newcastle a team worth supporting

Kevin has now rightly challenged his players to give Newcastle a team that is something to shout about every week – a team like we had when Kevin was last at the club is a good example. :D

Keegan told Newcastle World TV today:

“It was special for me before the Bolton game and I tried to put a reality check on it, but you can’t help but enjoy things like that,” “You enjoy it for the fans and the players more than anything else.”

“I said to the players - ‘That’s how it’s going to be every week if you start to play like a team that really wants to go places and if you start to show them that this club means everything to you’.”

“It’s a great thing for the players because some of them have not heard the atmosphere like that.” “They have heard them not being happy and rightly so having a go in certain matches.”

“But if we give the fans want they want - and that’s entertainment and commitment - then they’ll be right behind you every week.”

Talking about the Bolton game last Saturday Kevin spoke candidly and sensibly:

“Had we won by three or four it would have masked over where we really are at the moment,” “We are a small squad but we are a quality squad. We need a few players in and a few players back.”

“I want to bring three players in, no more, I know who I would like but we’ll have to see if they are available.”

“I will only bring in players which strengthen the squad but when you look at the quality we have that will be difficult.”

Kevin, the great man motivator is in full stride right now as he tries to instill confidence and ambition into his players and get them to play up their own standards. If we can do that, and put in place an attacking formation in every game, which he will, then the current squad can do a lot lot better than they have so far this season. We’re absolutely certain of that - but it’s still got to come from the players.

Comments very welcome.

    Is the Pandev any good?

  • 4 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:18

    YEAS!

Chikhaoui and Chermiti vs our senegal boys in 40 mins! :)

  • 5 Bill f // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:20

Would love to know the three he has in mind, I know we all have our ideas and there is tons of press speculation but who is it he really really wants. (cue spice girls)

8 days to go. The clock is ticking.

  • 6 Matt Lacey // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:22

Tom_Toon I think I’m gonna have to watch the Senegal game out of pure curiosity because of your persistent advertisements for these two chaps :P

  • 7 MagpieRich // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:29

    The 3 players are:

    1) Pandev
    2) Riise
    3) Ashton

    Go for it KK!

  • 8 malaysian toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:32

looks like one of the 3 is pandev… the other has 2 be a centerback as keegan said need someone vocal with taylor… the last one not sure

  • 9 joe // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:33

Pandev will be shear class, if he wants to come.

  • 10 Gordon d // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:35

Lot’s of reports on Woodgate returning would be good if he can stay injury free.

  • 11 Kris // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:40

I think pandev would well be up for a move to the toon, lazio are playing bad at the moment and word from italy is he”s too good for them, lots of skill and good control, loads of vids on youtube, hasnt scored lots of goals but nobody does in italy, fingers crossed he can adapt cause theres not players come from serie A and suceed in the premiership, but if anyone can then eastern europeans players are a good bet.

  • 12 Ryan Syahril // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:42

Three Players IMO = Woodgate + Ashton + one foreign midfielder! Hahaaha…

  • 13 Kris // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:43

Must say TOM TOON your man Yassine Chikhaoui loks a good player, must be reasons why nobody snapped him up yet,bet he”s cheap only plays for FC ZURICH

  • 14 steve chrome // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:44

I would love it, love it, if we brought woodgate back

  • 15 ObaFan2 // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:45

Hate to say it but the atmosphere at Spurs last night was unbelievable, they had a great performance to cheer about. Lets hope it’s our turn next and for the years to come.

I wouldn’t have classed a forward (Idd he plays behind front 2) as an important position to strengthen at this time IF only 3 players are coming in.
Maybe this is the creative mf and we’ll still get a cb and lb.
I’d have liked Carrick tbh and I see that Richards has had an improved deal from Man C since he’s been connected to us!

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:46

Kris, he’s been there 9 months, thats why. Inter, Bayern, Arsenal, Juve, Lyon, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen, Lens and Ajax all want his signature.

and he wont be cheap, lyon and bayern reported made bid of 16 mil euros, about 12 mil quid.

  • 17 JJ // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:48

While we talking about transfers, what about the likes of Claude Makalele.
He may be 33 but so was Rob Lee when he did a great job as a creative DM.
He would be available because he is no longer first choice at Chelsea and we could get a great two seasons out of him. * Although Roz had a great game last week in DM role.
At left back please lets sign Wayne Bridge on loan for the rest of the season with option to buy.
Van Buyten would be great at in CD and really add some aerial power and experience.
As attacking midfield we could get someone like Arshavin would add great flair along with Emre.
    All realistic targets.

  • 18 Kris // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:56

Hey Tom lets hope keegans watching the tunisia game tonight which he will be cause we have players there, good thing with keegan is if he see”s a classy player wont be afraid to gamble and the board wont stop him neither, shame about diego and van der vaart looks set for italy,we need to start buying from small clubs anyway, get a look of Kompany on youtube he” got skills.

  • 19 ToonKing // Jan 23, 2008 at 16:59

Beye is playing left-back for Senegal….great use this ANC is……..

  • 20 Tez131 // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:01

Why is everyone wanting a new left back?

Is it because you don’t think Enrique is good enough or you want some one to cover for him?

To be honest I like enrique and he is young, bringing in someone like riise in my mind would just hold Enrique back from producing his best (by palying week in week out) We have got Tozer (depending how good he is) and N’Zogbia if we really need them for cover.
I say give Enrique until Summer to prove how good he is but dont get another LB before then.

I think our Priorities are an Attacking/ Creative Midfielder, a right winger and a Holding Midfielder or Centre Back. I think Faye/ Rosenhal may be deployed as a Defensive Mid therefore it will be a CB (Woodgate/ Campbell).

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:02

Chermiti is banned or on the bench.

Why does he play Chikhaoui up front, thats fkin dumb!

  • 22 Kris // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:02

Watford say 2 more premier league clubs in for Marlon King lets hope were not one of them.

  • 23 ToonKing // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:05

Just saw that Mamaduo Niang is senegalese too, KK should take a look at him, he’s a very good striker and on fire for Marseille right now, scoring for fun.

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:06

Chikhaoui is no.9 looks likes he’s playing more attacking mid, great news.

    Amine Chermiti is banned :(

  • 25 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:09

No quotes but they seem to believe we will be meeting with woodgate in next 48hrs.
A fee of around 9mil is being said…

  • 28 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:19

woodgate met us already in PAST 48 HRS

  • 29 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:20

    Chikhaoui aint playing well atm.

  • 30 Kelvin Koogan // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:21

would love to see woodgate back. The best defender we’ve seen at the Toon…when he was fit

  • 31 Tez131 // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:21

Cheers Carl… read it to fast!!

So apparently we have already spoken with him ..

  • 32 Leo* // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:22

9 mil for woody would be a bargain if he stays fit

pandev seems ok, would like to see more of him though

  • 33 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:23

NO PROBS TEZ, YEAH SOUNDS AN ALMOST DONE DEAL, IF WE GET HIM BACK ILL BE HAPPY, WOODGATE,PANDEZ AND ?????????

  • 34 ToonKing // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:23

Beye is shite so far and so is Tom_Toon’s bloke :)

  • 35 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:24

i think kk would use pandez as an am in a diamond shaped midfield like the good old days

  • 36 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:25

Nice pass by Chikhaoui, i like him playing deep but hes playing too deep!

  • 37 Kelvin Koogan // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:26

If only we could get that Lee Clarke/ Rob Lee thing going again….what glory

  • 38 Kelvin Koogan // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:28

Before that knob Batty came in and screwed it all up

  • 39 Matt Lacey // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:29

Faye’s looking solid enough mind, and Beye seems to be on the right every time I spot him at the moment. Come on lads

  • 40 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:30

    given
    beye woodgate taylor enrique
    faye
    milner nzogbia/duff
    pandev
    martins owen

what an attacking team that would be??

  • 41 ToonKing // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:31

Yeah Matt he’s at the right. The stupid commentators said he’s the left back before the games started.

  • 42 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:32

    Give Chikhaoui the ball FFS!

Im annoyed, hes playing poo, but so is Beye and we all know hes good.

  • 43 steve k // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:39

seems madness to invest any serious money in woodgate… considering his chronic injury problems. it’s just not worth spending any serious money on a defender that has such a poor injury record.

if he stayed fit then great but the boy is made of glass. better not to have him on the books and be relying on them. but that’s just me opinion like.

  • 44 Gin-toonic // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:40

Hope we all clam down and give Keegan a chance. Trust him to put the pressure on himself. Doesn’t take us long to get worked up. Lets cheer him no matter what happens. Arsenal twice. Tottenham are a top side right now and they caught Arsenal on their day off. Players of course must go in and play for a miracle ! We must be patent ! Would love it, just love it if we did a tottenham ! Owen are you the top striker on that pitch ? Duffers are you going to show us what you can do ? Taylor lets see why you are rated so highly ?

  • 45 J // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:43

Woodgate would be great he has been fully fit for about 2years which is a good sign!

    AND

    Has LOADS of EPL Experience.

    GET HIM NOW!

  • 46 Tez131 // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:47

Southgate is looking for a striker and is said to be an admirer of Ameobi.

We should offer Ameobi +cash for Woodgate.

And just pray he is over his major injuries. He has play quite a bit for Boro since moving there. He is such a good defender!!

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:49

    Chikhaoui is playing like shit!

Mainly cos he aint had feel for the ball.

  • 48 ToonKing // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:52

“Southgate is looking for a striker and is said to be an admirer of Ameobi.”

LOL whats wrong with that sentence ?? :D

Let him have him and shoot 2 bucks with one shot.

  • 49 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:52

bllody hell lets just forget chickhaoui ffs. we aint getting him

  • 50 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:54

carl. shut yer mouth, its a running commentary on the game.

  • 51 Steeley // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:54

Steve K - totally agree mate. I think we all agree that Woodgate is a class defender (and to grab another Boro player would be funny!) however, Woodgate’s fitness is no where near good enough to suggest a ludicrous fee of £9m which is being bandied around at the mo!!
Also, the guy is out injured at the moment - it would be tragic if the Reali Madrid situation happened to us (i.e. pay big cash for a crock!).

If we were to get him for £4m or £5m that would be better (or pay per play basis) - but not £9m!

  • 52 Astidores Sanchez Blanco // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:56

The Woodgate deal is looking like its going to happen which I am quite pleased with because I liked him first time around. Elegant and composed on the ball and with a handy knack of being in the right place at the right time, he should be able to form a classy partnership with Taylor :).

  • 53 keegan // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:56

tom toon- your goin a bit to far with this chikhaoui thing. are you his agent

  • 54 Steeley // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:56

But then again, if it was £4m or £5m plus Ameobi I would take that too!! We need rid of that numpty - especially if this Lazio striker is inbound!!

  • 55 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 17:58

keegan - im just commenting on him a lot today because he is playing.

  • 56 Black and White Blood // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:02

Steeley - Woodgate is an outstanding defender, I suggested him a few days ago when a couple of you guy’s had a right go at me for suggesting a preference to him over Sol Campbell… Remember!!! However I can’t see us paying more than £5mill for the very reason of his past injury record… KK’s not daft. Nevertheless, if we were to get him he would bring on young Mr Taylor no ends..!

  • 57 wayne // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:02

does ayone think we might bring in three or more or zilch?

  • 58 Black and White Blood // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:04

Tom_Toon – You feel free to scout mate, I remember only a week ago offering you a position as my official club scout – Granted it is only Championship Manager!!!!

  • 59 Black and White Blood // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:09

Hmmm…. got a feeling we may just have someone in for Sat’s Game!!!! Pendev I hope..!

Not sure but have the feeling these will be KK’s first signings:

    Pendev
    Woodgate
    Shorey

  • 60 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:10

  • 63 nitro // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:13

suprisingly none of you guys have mentioned David Albelda..he’s a spanish international and he’s unattached..only 30 too..but considering the spanish flops we have had..=p(albelda will be a much better improvement on whatever CM we have now though)

  • 64 Black and White Blood // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:15

Carl - Tom_Toon - Come on Guy’s keep it calm…. This is a site for opinions and a little bit banter..!…. Too much excitement and anticipation regarding who will be new signings..!!

Carl….. Shut your face….lol…only joking mate!!!

  • 65 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:16

  • 76 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:50

Shorey is not coming. He turned us down last week.

Woodgate is on his way as long as he passes his medical.

Some people have suggested giving them Shola in exchange. I’d be happy to give them Viduka too and not have to pay anything to bring Woodgate back.

Woodgate and Taylor would be awesome.

  • 77 carl // Jan 23, 2008 at 18:51

apparently pompey like ameobi too, lets hope woodgates doing his medical now!!

  • 81 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 19:04

Black & White - it’s all over Reuters press association news on BBC World service. They don’t report it unless there is truth in it.

  • 82 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 19:06

Tom_Toon - if Viduka can pass a medical, then anyone can. He’s a right Fat Bas****d and is clearly unfit.

  • 83 Tom_Toon // Jan 23, 2008 at 19:07

Woodgate is injured. He will probably get injured in the intense medical examination, ahaha.

  • 84 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 19:13

Woodgate was going to be back in training this weekend. He’s not injured anymore. Hence Keegan going for him.

  • 85 Gordon d // Jan 23, 2008 at 20:50

Apparently Woodgates already met with NUFC (sky sports)

  • 86 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 20:53

If he does sign, he can then make his debut against Middlesborough in 10 days time :-)

  • 87 Gordon d // Jan 23, 2008 at 20:56

    I don’t think he’s cup tied

  • 88 The black in the blacknwhite // Jan 23, 2008 at 21:10

just saw a few clips of woodgate-

pure class- this guy made bramble look good- i remember we beat chelsea 1-o when woody was at the back i wasnt nervous when we got attacked

what can you say he is a calming influence….his injury record is worrying tho- even when he was with us 28 games in 18 months! he was one of tyhe reason we reached 3rd a few seasons back!

be happy with woody- i think him and faye would be immense- although i know everyone wants a Taylor Woodgate partnership but still

    Given

Beye Faye Woodgate Enrique ( i like the hombre oK1)

would be a stong back line!

  • 89 Gordon d // Jan 23, 2008 at 21:17

I agree the black in the black & white i come from Scotland but my mum comes from Newcastle (Denton Burn) i took my son down for his 1st game in October against Everton and Jose Enrique strolled through that game.

  • 90 The black in the blacknwhite // Jan 23, 2008 at 21:33

exactly, he is very cool on the ball, i.e comfortable- unlike Carr and some other defenders- we need show we have confidence in him, i think understands the passion we have- Spainish clubs have a lot of passion and ithink he is unfazed by all that is happening and i thinki very gald fat sam has gone

  • 91 James // Jan 23, 2008 at 21:42

Black and white - i lived in spain for a year and saw a lot of Enrique playing for Villeral. Sheer class defender. He just needs to get upto speed with the PL. Remember everyone slating Evra when he first signed for Manure and that he wasn’t going to be any good? Now this year he is undroppable. Same with Enrique if Keegan puts some faith in him.

Unfortunately it sounds like Keegan doesn’t like him at all.

As much as we all hated Sam, we must admit he did buy very well with Beye, Faye, and Enrique.

  • 92 scott9 // Jan 23, 2008 at 22:49

woodagte and pandev and a centre midfileder i would be over the moon with them signings

  • 93 AdamCF // Jan 24, 2008 at 9:32

Jim.. Enrique’s 19. He’s got plenty of time. World class defenders are at their peak at 26. He’ll be fine.
