Transfer Updates on Woodgate and Pandev

Newcastle United are keen to tie up Lazio’s Macedonian striker Goran Pandev and the news that Manchester City’s Bianchi could be signing on loan for the Rome club, could well help that deal be completed.

Goran Pandev – could be arriving on Tyneside

Rolando Bianchi is undergoing medical exams with Lazio today, and is close to signing a loan deal to return to Italy through the end of the season. A permanent deal is a possible option in the summer.

Lazio however, are after top money for their striker, and the figure mentioned is around £11M, but we don’t think that will put Newcastle off.

If Pandev is signed, then Newcastle may include Shola Ameobi in the deal to bring Jonathan Woodgate back to Newcastle United. This is a possibility, although Chris Mort said yesterday he didn’t think Ameobi was going anywhere in January.

Jonathan Woodgate – target of Newcastle United

It turns out that Woodgate was already a January transfer target when Sam Allardyce was sacked, and Kevin Keegan has agreed to support the deal.

Allardyce had first mentioned the center-back as a prospective signing this month, and Kevin thought this was a good move, when he met with Chairman Chris Mort last Wednesday to discuss transfer targets.

20 year old England Under-21 International David Wheater’s development this season at Middlesbrough, means that Southgate has other central defensive options, and we expect Jonathan Woodgate to sign for Newcastle. The latest fee being quoted is now around £8M.

Comments very welcome.

    Ed,
The home page, there is a banner with Newcastle United shirt that says “Strips”, does this means Newcastle United fans should start stripping or is it should be “Stripe” instead?

If Woodgate comes and we can keep him fit we will have the best centre back in the country. Great news.

Both these players will be good transfers.I just hope woodgate will stay fit as i think he was excellent when we had him.Lets face it he made bramble look good an he is the reason rio ferdinand went to utd for 20million.If we sign Pandev then someone has to go i.e. ameobi.

The news bout woodgate, modric and pandev are great and would certainly improve our squad, and if we could top that with a left back and a right wing we would be rdy to climp the table big time… Its a little to much to ask KK to sign 5 players in 7 days, i know, and we should properly be glad if he gets 2 of em, but here’s hoping.

Riise for £5m would be a steal if we are actually after him. Adds compo with Enrique and gives more options in midfield. I really hope we sign Woody again, he oozes class at the back and what a partnership he;d make with Taylor.

As for Pandev sounds good, is he quick?

I hope the modric deal has some substance too, I saw him play for croatia a few times and to be honest looks a far better player than Arshavin.

    Riise, Woodgate, Modric and Pandev!

    Not bad!

To be perfectly honest I think Woodgate is past his best and this would not be a very good deal for us if £8M is the price. When is the last time you heard about him putting in a great performance for Boro? I’d almost forgotten he played for them. Injuries have took their toll and this is bad business for the Toon.

Stop worrying about the price, £8m is pocket change for Ashley. He makes £103m a year just in interest from his bank accounts.

@Keegan and Macas – You’re entitled to your opinion as is anyone, but all we have to go on is reports and rumours. That old saying, if there’s smoke there’s fire.

As for woodgate, reports suggest that woody has fell out with southgate, thats why he isn’t playing. We have a very good medical team, and i’m sure he’d be put through a very extensive examination. If he passes and KK is happy, then i’m sure and hope he’ll be a good acquisition.

Remember form is temporary but class is permanent. If Tony Adams could get over his problems and injuries to guide Arsenal to titles and being the invincibles then i’m sure Woody can regain his best form!

As the previous thread was about Barton I thought this was worth repeating on this one.

Re the Woodgate signing, I think there is a lot of reminicising nostalgia going on. He was a great player whilst he was with us but I do not think he is as good now as he was then. From the few games I have seen him in he has looked a bit clumsy and uncoordinated and not always up the pace of the games. Of course there could be some underlying cause for this, injury or lifestyle. (ie his alleged drink problem, I hadn’t heard about it). I’m not sure that he would be the panacea to our defensive problems a have serious doubts if he is what we need, either short or long term.

I am reminded of a remark by John Lennon when asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world he replied (not exact quote) he’s not even the best in the Beatles. I don’t think that currently JW is the best Boro defender.

I certainly do not think we should be paying huge amounts of cash for him, I reckon Southgate and co. are having a laugh

carl – it is always VERY difficult to get players in Jan, because their clubs don’t want them to leave. It doesn’t matter how much money you have. Even Manure and Real Madrid struggle to get players in during this time.

So the real splashing of cash and big money signings will be in the summer.

They hope to get 2-3 in during Jan, but if you approached their clubs in the summer they would already be here.

The winter transfer window is stupid. Nobody likes to move mid season.

Mort is working hard to get deals done, but don’t be annoyed if they don’t happen – it won’t be from lack of trying.

Yes, Pandev would be an amazing signing, but Mort and Keegan have to persuade him to come to a mid table team, rather than wait a few months and sign for Bayern and play Champions League football. You see the problems Mort is up against?
