Newcastle and Tottenham Battle for Woodgate

Middlesbrough have now let it be known they are willing to listen to offers for Jonathan Woodgate, their 28-year-old local center-back.

Jonathan Woodgate – wanted by Newcastle and Tottenham

Newcastle are interested in the England center-back, but also Tottenham have made it clear they want to talk to the player, so it looks like it’s grown into a two way fight for the player.

However, we understand that negotiations with Newcastle are at an advanced stage, and would think that Jonathan would be only too pleased to join Newcastle United for a second stint at the club under Kevin Keegan. He could have joined from Real Madrid on loan in the summer of 2006, but was unimpressed with then manager Glenn Roeder.

But we think a conversation with Kevin Keegan can convince the Middlesbrough born player his future again lies north at Newcastle United.

However, the deal may be complicated by Spur’s additional interest in Stewart Downing, Middlebrough’s talented 23 year-old left winger and their willingness to let their right-back Pascal Chimbonda leave, which we reported on yesterday.

Middlesbrough have lots of talent at center back in Robert Huth, Emmanuel Pogatetz, David Wheater and the young Matthew Bates, so it appears they can afford to let Woodgate leave. Jonathan just signed last summer on a permanent deal, after being on loan for a season after joining Real Madrid in August, 2004 from Newcastle for £13.4M. Ever since that time Newcastle have struggled in central defense, and the return of Jonathan to Tyneside would be welcomed by most fans – if we can keep him fit.

Middlesbrough paid £7M for the player in the summer, and would be willing to sell him for a small profit on that figure.

What do you think?

Certainly time is running out with just 6 days left, so we need to start bringing some players in.

Comments welcome.

He’s the only decent premiership proven centre back we can realisticly get in the window, don’t want to go abroad and take a risk like we did with Cacapa and Rozehnal who aren’t quite ready for the premiership yet. Think he would love to work under KK who gave him his first england cap.

We all assume that we have lots of money…. Yes Ashley is a Billionair, but we can not just assume he will spend stupid amounts of money on wages and the purchasing of players – he has already spent a fortune purchasing the club and then repaying most of the clubs debt…. Don’t get me wrong I hope that is not the case, but Ashley hasn’t become so wealthy be spending recklessly..! We will all have a better idea in a weeks time…

This is more press speculation – notice the distinct lack of quotes from anywhere, as usual.

Spurs may well be after Woody, great, let them have him, I’m sure Kev has others he wants and Woody, as much as I like him, is so injury prone he makes Owen look good.

As for the Chimbonda thing – again, look at the article and you’ll notice three key words, “The Sun claims”……….

Here you go, this sums this story up for me – this is taken from the Sky Sports web site.

Tottenham have been granted permission to speak to Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate, according to Sky Sports News.

we can assume that our wage structure is higher than others , otherwise whats the point iif our support isnt channeled back into the club?
we have the 5th highest income in the prem , we need to flaunt that if we want to distance ourselves from the likes of villa and spurs .

Black and White Blood – If that’s the case, I stand corrected – I still don’t care though, Woody’s too injury prone.

Yes i agree but i dont think £7m-£10m for a defender of his quality is that reckless despite the fact of his injury record as we have cover at centre half ie Taylor, Faye, Cacapa, Rozenhal, Ramage, Edgar etc. if we can keep him fit for away games mostly he would be an awesome signing

I think there are better options out there. I’m not sure Woodgate will ever fully get over his injury problems.

spurs have a 40,000 wage cap so it would be easy to get him just offer 41,000.

True, just a theory, we should still sign him and the move makes more sense because Woody has lived throught some of our successful times. He was a pivotal part actually!

Not going to be too upset if he doesn’t come, apparently its well known in Boro that he’s a coke-head and I don’t think we can deal with another player going off the rails.

Personally, I’d wait for other defenders to become available. I rate Woodgate as high as anyone does but he’s just not proven his fitness is ever going to get right. The other options you asked me for, Kash2, probably aren’t going to be realistic. If I had my way though we’d go all out for someone like Vincent Kompany or Andrea Barzagli. A real quality player who’ll probably end up in the premiership eventually.

Why the talk about us “missing out” on Woodgate. There is nothing to suuggest that we were interested in bringing him back to the club.

There seem to be a lot of people who are getting hot under the collar about him going to Spurs. If we are interested, Keegan will make a bid. If not go figure… another rubbish news story, trying to drum up interst in a player Boro want to offload.

Personally I would like to see him back at the club, if fit. However there is nothing we can do to make Keegan put in a bid, if he is not interested.
