Middlesbrough have now let it be known they are willing to listen to offers for Jonathan Woodgate, their 28-year-old local center-back.
Jonathan Woodgate – wanted by Newcastle and Tottenham
Newcastle are interested in the England center-back, but also Tottenham have made it clear they want to talk to the player, so it looks like it’s grown into a two way fight for the player.
However, we understand that negotiations with Newcastle are at an advanced stage, and would think that Jonathan would be only too pleased to join Newcastle United for a second stint at the club under Kevin Keegan. He could have joined from Real Madrid on loan in the summer of 2006, but was unimpressed with then manager Glenn Roeder.
But we think a conversation with Kevin Keegan can convince the Middlesbrough born player his future again lies north at Newcastle United.
However, the deal may be complicated by Spur’s additional interest in Stewart Downing, Middlebrough’s talented 23 year-old left winger and their willingness to let their right-back Pascal Chimbonda leave, which we reported on yesterday.
Middlesbrough have lots of talent at center back in Robert Huth, Emmanuel Pogatetz, David Wheater and the young Matthew Bates, so it appears they can afford to let Woodgate leave. Jonathan just signed last summer on a permanent deal, after being on loan for a season after joining Real Madrid in August, 2004 from Newcastle for £13.4M. Ever since that time Newcastle have struggled in central defense, and the return of Jonathan to Tyneside would be welcomed by most fans – if we can keep him fit.
Middlesbrough paid £7M for the player in the summer, and would be willing to sell him for a small profit on that figure.
What do you think?
Certainly time is running out with just 6 days left, so we need to start bringing some players in.
