Keegan, Mort Planning Longer Term on Transfers

Kevin Keegan has talked to the Newcastle Journal this morning, and warned Newcastle fans not to expect too many players coming in during January.

Kevin Keegan – don’t expect too many players in January

Kevin talked to the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“We are beavering away but we are not looking for lots of people,” “If we get anyone it will be from the domestic game, unless an absolutely massive opportunity drops on our doorstep.”“We have good people here who know every player all over the world. We have all the data and the computer can pull (their details) up.”

“If an agent calls about a player we can see four or five reports on them, see them playing and make a decision, but we have tended to say that is for another day.”

“We are concentrating on players from this country who are available – I looked at the list and, with the greatest respect, you like all the players on it but know you are not going to get some of them because of price or they may not want to come somewhere where they won’t yet play in Europe.”

“So when you get around to the realistic targets – and there are not many – if we can’t get them in we won’t make any signing in this window, in or out. We have had inquiries for some of our players but don’t want to get people out, we have not got a big enough squad. Even if it were part of a swap deal I would be very reluctant.”

We think Chris Mort and Kevin are actually looking at the longer term, and which players they want to bring in during the summer too. And a lot of names we have been linked with, especially those from outside the Premier League, will be summer targets.

But like any well run club, we believe the spade work is bring started now, so that during the summer we can get the new players in early, so they can settle in well, before the season starts.

Sounds good to us.

Comments very welcome.

Also reports today suggest that were leading the race, snubbing the Hammers, to get Derby’s Giles Barnes in a 5.5M move. Imo it would be a brilliant signing, hugely talented.

Woodgate is apparantly in advanced talks with Newcastle – should have him wrapped up by Sunday.
Perhaps Keegan will give more insight in post-match comments.

if we can get giles barnes in for 5.5m it would be a snip. he is a great player. i think if we try, maybe buy him then loan him back to them till the end of the season. thats probly the only way they will agree it

If what they are saying is true, then it shows a modicum of common sense, can’t help feeling it’s an excuse cos they can’t get the players they really want at present. I have reservations about Woodgate, can’t help thinking Boro might be pulling another hoodwink on us. I know Viduka has had his moments but overall I feel he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Many fans (esp on here) are going to be eager for lots of transfers this window, and a swift switch to winning results. Eager is too soft a word.. -expect- is more like it. These fans are going to need a lesson in being reasonable and having common sense about the situation we’re in. If Mort and Keegan are planning longer term in terms of transfers, then I send out a sigh of relief. We’ve brought in some good youngsters so far this window, and I applaud that. The only thing we really need out of this window is a creative midfielder. Doesn’t even really need to be world class, someone of emre’s ability or better would be great. A loan would work. The results for the duration of this season are going to be mediocre, and we can only hope for slow but steady progress. Save the big money for the better transfers come summer.

    Deco, Carrick, Richards.

OK, we could buy the whole Arsenal, man u, chelsea, barca, or real madrid teams, put them in a black White shirt that is newcastle united, and I still think they wouldn’t perform!!

    GET RID of AMEOBI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would be nice for shearer to be at newcastle, but i think he should go for the southampton managers job, i think he would get it, need to start someone, all the best big AL (Shearer). Go and get some experience mate at southampton, then come to NUFC one day and be our saviour!!!
