Woodgate Prefers Return to Newcastle United

Kevin Keegan and Newcastle United are said to be close to securing a deal for Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Jonathan Woodgate – said to want a return to Newcastle

As we reported last night, Newcastle had an £8M bid accepted by Middlesbrough, and will continue to speak to the Middlesbrough native this weekend.

The good news for Newcastle fans is that the word on Woodgate is he’d love to return to Newcastle United and the Keegan revolution, and doesn’t want to move to the Capital.

Tottenham had already had their bid for the player accepted by Middlesbrough, and have talked to the player already this week. Woodgate will remain on Tees-side over the weekend, and is expected to decide his future before the weekend is out. He is currently nursing a slight injury and is not available to play this weekend.

The only problem with Woodgate is of course his poor injury record, but he has improved on that score at Middlesbrough, but not by much. He only played 28 times for Newcastle United in his 18 months there under Sir Bobby Robson, and hardly played for Real Madrid (9 appearances) in the two seasons he spent there after his time at Newcastle.

In his 18 months at Middlesbrough he has appeared 36 times for the Tees-side club.

Newcastle is thought to be Woodgate’s preferred destination, and leaves Tottenham missing out on another high profile transfer target.

We’ll be very happy to have Woodgate back at the Tyne-side club, because he’s an excellent player, who gave his all for the club last time around, and is a firm favorite with Geordie fans. We wouldn’t be surprised if he also ends up captain of the club at some time in the future, which should help his off field activities.

Comments welcome.

if he does come he would be an ideal captain, but it would seem a bit rich to put someone straight into the team and making them captain.

but if he brings his alloted good influence to the team then i wouldnt mind

Leo – probably next season for captain – Owen will probably remain captain this season – hey – if he does a good job he could keep the arm-band too.

    when will we learn????

Yes he is a top class central defender, yes he was the best we saw in a generation, yes he fits our shocking profile of “if only”.

When will it end, Barton, Dyer, Owen, Viduka………..Manure, arsehole aand livershite build their respective defenses around solid foundations and would not dream of taking a chance in such an imperative position on the park

Don’t know what to make of this.

    a) Probably the most naturally gifted centre half this country has seen for a long time.

    b) A terrible injury record

RE: his alleged off the field recreational habits. Keegan drove two players out of the club for exactly the same thing last time around.

It cannot be said that either party is not going into this with their eyes wide open and consequently not aware of the possibilities. If he signs I hope he turns out to be a good buy

If we can keep him fit he could be the buy of the season by far.

Hopefully – NUFC will insist on him moving to the Newcastle area. I know its only 45 mins away but he has too many negative influences around him down in the land of the 7 toe’d sock.

This injury thing is a bit tiresome. When he was at Leeds he was available for 60% of games, we paid nearly 10 million and everyone was chuffed. He went to Real and it went a bit pearshaped but since his return to Boro he has been available and played in 73% of games – the BEST injury record of his career. Put it this way, if we get him for 8 million and he plays 30 games a season in all competitions it would be well worth it as he is the best defender i have seen in a black and white shirt. Him and Taylor are a potential England partnership if Rio and Terry are injured. He would be a great signing imo and i hope he comes. Great player who’s bad injury problems seem to be behind him. The little niggling injuries are a possibility for every player. Woodgate has played more matches in the last 12 – 18 months than John Terry, would we be disappointed at the possibility of signing him? Thought not.

Woody is a great player and reads the game as well as anyone in the premiership at the moment. When he was last here our defense was the strongest it has been for a long time. I’m obviously out of the loop here but people keep referring to his off field antics….what are they? At the end of the day he is still young for a defender and providing he can stay fit would be a huge asset to any team, and more importantly by the sound of it he wants to play for us. Can’t ask for more than that really.

Joe – cant really compare Terry’s injury record to Woodgate’s mate! Terry has had this injury but apart from that he has been an almost constant throughout his career.

Woodgate has CONSTANTLY had injury problms – including being out at the minute! The fact is, Woodgate’s BEST percentage of games played in a season is his current at 71% (not 73%) – the fact is he’s horribly prone and worth NOWHERE NEAR £8m!!!

But, we’ll see…….IF he stays fit then he’ll be ace, however, I think this could be a mistake!

SuperShearer – there’s not really “off field antics” with Woodgate – it’s been terribly overhyped! He was caught up in an issue with another ex-Leeds team-mate – apparantly they beat up an Asian guy. Indeed, they were both found guilty (confirmation needed!) – but that was the only thing I can think of, and that was years and years ago.

I certainly dont think we have another Barton or Bowyer on our hands, thats for sure.

ive been hearing rumours hes been chasing the white lines? it was only a couple of months ago he was in trouble for giving money to a youth player who’s mum was a notorious dealer. these are rumours though so who knows. id love it if he came hes a great defender with real awareness and influence at the back- something we sorely need.

Steeley: The (unproven) allegations with Woodgate have also included Coke abuse. That one never seems to be far from the surface.

Also I have heard a number of things from Boro supporters in the past about his idea of a good night out and where he liked to re-fuel. These were things when he was very much younger, growing up and hopefully grown out of.

“But, we’ll see…….IF he stays fit then he’ll be ace, however, I think this could be a mistake!”

    – Agree totally

you must be joking.why do you think the smogs are selling him?he’s a boozer , a trouble maker and we did well to make a profit on him last time, the lads permanantley injured.let him go to spurs and put a massive bid in for ledley king if you want a class cb.plus we have class defenders its just that they get exposed week in week out by our midfield.at present we dont have one world class central midfielder.we have a potential but he’s a fruit loop who snaps when someone winds him up.

71, 73, not much difference really, only 2 games in a hundred. Of course Terry hasn’t been as prone to injury as Woody has, but in the last 18 months he has missed alot of games. For me, in our situation, he would be a great addition. I still think that if we keep the ball the defence would look better straight away but a quality CB is badly needed. If we can add Woody and 1 proven creative CM then we will be ready to push forward. Slowly but surely we will inch up the league and a top half finish will do us. Intertoto Cup to ease into the UEFA and we’ll be happy!!!

Excellent buy. When fit he’s the best defender out there. When he’s not, still think we’ve got good cover. Faye’s had a decent season, and Rozenhal and Cacapa will improve as they get used to things.

I would be chuffed if we get him but not devastated if we don’t, he is the best defender I have ever seen at SJP but I am worried about his off field activities and injury problems.
I would like KK to go for man city’s Nedum Onuoha, as I feel he is potentially much better than Micah Richards.
I would also feel a lot better when Taylor has had his contract renewed. He has played alongide both Richards and Onuoha for England so should have a good insight into their skills.

Could be worse, we could be going after Ashley Cole as well, hey why not, might as well have all of the misfits. We could then sell them on cheaply to WH.
Is it team bonding that KK wants or team bondage!!

Woodgate, Taylor, Faye Cacapa and Ramage when fit will do for me. Faye can also play in front of the back four.
Taylor will benefit most playing alongside Woodgate as did Wheater with the Smoggies.
Any 2 from Woodgate , Faye or Taylor the strongest available
