All Quiet On Newcastle Transfer Front

3:48 pm, Sunday, January 27th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 96 Comments

There’s just 4 days to go until the end of the January transfer window and with the breakdown of Jonathan Woodgate’s transfer to Newcastle, it could be that we’ll get nobody in during January.

Chris Mort and Kevin Keegan – no movement in transfer market – yet

We of course have been linked with many different players but Keegan has already said that he will only bring in players in January who have the experience to play immediately in the Premier League.

One player that fits that category and we are said to be interested in, is Pascal Chimbonda, the Tottenham right back. However, with Stephen Carr playing well, and Habib Beye, our number one choice, coming back from the African Cup of Nations, that acquisition wouldn’t seem to strengthen the squad too much.

What we do need is a good creative central midfielder and perhaps a striker who can put the ball in the net. We hope the rumor that we’re after Giles Barnes from Derby County is true, and there are a few strikers still available who could strengthen our squad, including West Ham’s Dean Ashton.

But we are very surprised that nobody had come into the squad yet, since it’s 11 days since Kevin took over as manager of the club.

We’ll just have and see what, if anything, happens through Thursday evening.

What do you think – comments very welcome.

Right person at the right time. It doesn’t matter if the transfer isn’t happen few days back. Be patient, and we shall be rewarded. 🙂

  • 2 Graeme // Jan 27, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Dean Ashton would be a good buy, as would Baptista. Dont think Barnes would make the impact that Baptista would, assuming we could get him of course.

Sell/ swap Owen, Strolla, Bring in a good CF that can open up the game for Martins and the Midfield to score as well

  • 3 leavy // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:00 PM

omg!!!! no signings i cant believe it
the fact that woodgate wont come to us shows were in decline.
We needed a midfielder and yet no ones arrived, typical of newcastles recent transfers name me the last good player we brought who has genuinly made us a better team owen no martins no duff no
the best players we brought were n zogbia and milner and they were an age ago!

  • 4 Ashton // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:01 PM

We dont need any players for now
some of you may say we need a creative midfielder but we already have one agood one EMRE !

i think when all players are fit KK will play with 4 4 2 formation

    ————— Given
    Beye — Taylor — Faye — Enrique
    ———-Barton — Emre
    Duff ————————– N’zogbia
    ———- Owen — Martins

this is a strong attacking team imo .

  • 5 MIKE HOOPERS POOPER SCOOPER // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:02 PM

I’m pretty dissapointed that no one has arrived yet.
But like the Keegan appointment – you never know what will happen do you??
Gutted about Woodgate – but I don’t believe the Shearer story. He will be at club in some capacity. Could be that Spurs can offer him UEFA cup football this season and next (assuming Chelski finish in the top 4!)

You never know though – the Woodgate saga could yet have another twist – we’ll see.

  • 6 toonoholic // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:03 PM

    bye bye january

  • 7 Hadrian // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:06 PM

gutted we dont seem to have the pulling power we once did , only one option , sign some phat cheques .

  • 8 paddyq // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Im sorry but ashton would NOT be a good buy. hes overweight, untalented and slow. He fits exactly into the allardyce mould of players, therefore that says it all.

  • 9 pete // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:10 PM

never mind the strikers we need defenders and a decent midfielder with vision and skill to give the strikers the sort of service they deserve.

  • 10 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:11 PM

If KK is only looking in the prem, we are royally buggered. There is no1 good, available and/or would come to us in the roles we need need: defensive midfield and attacking midfield.

  • 11 chickensoup // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:21 PM

typical newcastle, our hopes are built up with talk of Deco, Micah richards, Arshavin and Berbatov. In hindsight probably unrealistic, but the club allows the fans to ride the wave of expectation and now we are back down to earth with a bump. Giles Barnes is about as exciting as we are going to get. And the prospect of a dull finish to the season with nothing to play for and nobody with that spark, able to create goals and start us playing the Keegan brand of football we were all looking forward to seeing again. Revolution on hold until the summer!

  • 12 James Oliver // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:23 PM

We desperately need Emre back. Nobody in our current midfield can play a chance creating pass. Zog has great control but his passing is horrible.

Look how great Fabregas spread the ball out and through our defence. That is the kind of passing we need for the strikers.

Also I think Owen has totally lost his speed which is really his greatest strength. That worries me alot.

  • 13 leavy // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:30 PM

yes emre is our only creative talent
i used to watch newcastle train in the holidays and he is our most creative talent hes a genius
if he was consistent we would be flying

  • 14 joe // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:36 PM

I still think that we will make a very large offer for bentley. Blackburn can say what they want but hard cash is hard to refuse especially for a 1 million pound player.

  • 15 ALBERT // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Dont want barnes.Doubt there is a midfielder in this country who would fulfill our needs. The only person i have seen who fits the bill is arshavin from zenit st petersburg but being foreign keegan wont be keen.
If shearer does come to the club the signing of ashton would be good. shearer could mould him to be his long term successor

  • 16 Ryan Syahril // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Why don’t we close one eye and just splash some cash to bring Deco or Requelme to SJP?
That’s all what we need since the transfer ‘deadline’ is just around the corner.

  • 17 toonoholic // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:48 PM

    no signings

  • 18 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:50 PM

We fookin NEEEEEEED new players, if we get nobody, were FOOKED, simple as that.

  • 19 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:51 PM

Break the fookin bank, get Van Der Vaart!!!!!

  • 20 nufc ...thailand // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:52 PM

    we need
need: defensive midfield and attacking midfield.

    defensive midfield = Carrick

    attacking midfield= Deco or Diego

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:52 PM

How bout Mozart from Spartak, brilliant passer and defensive midfielder.

  • 22 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Not Mozart, his music is shit!

  • 23 micepie // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:55 PM

I wasn’t expecting anything to happen now. Personally I’m not miffed or anything. I don’t think KK should rush signings.

One site mentions that Bentley may sign for us after all, though. I wondered why we didn’t sign him cheaply when he was available before he joined Blackburn. Didn’t he used to be a winger? Does he have the quality we need in central mf??

  • 24 micepie // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:58 PM

p.s – I’ve heard that Rimskykorsakov may be available at Zenit St. Petersburg!

  • 25 Bonkers // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:58 PM

Can’t really see anyone coming in now. As someone said, we’re not even close to having the pulling power we once had. We’re a mid table team at the moment, without any prospect of qualifying for european competitions this season. We’ve been told we got a crapload of transfer funds, however that’s obviously not enough always. We’ll see in the summer

  • 26 Martins // Jan 27, 2008 at 4:59 PM

Riquelme has already rejoined Boca Juniors.

  • 27 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Im being serious, Mozart is a good player and a realistic, good option. Tough tackler and great passer, therefore better than Butt.

  • 28 howway geordies // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Mozart and his Magic Flute could be handy – the pied piper leading the way through opposition defences!

  • 29 yet_another_indian_toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:07 PM

    In Keegan I trust….

Whatever player Keegan signs, he should have full faith in that player. That player should fit into the scheme of things at SJP. I sincerely hope and trust that Keegan wouldn’t and shouldn’t be pressurized into doing something rash, for he knows what NUFC needs better than us.

  • 30 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:07 PM

I agree Butt is shit, but we need an attacking midfielder more than any other position at the moment

  • 31 Gooderz // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:08 PM

I hope that KK, Mort and Ashley are looking at the players on the edge of class who aren’t playing for the biggest teams in the biggest leagues. Elmander, Arshavin and Appiah could come in straight away and do a good job. Elsewhere there are players who could develop and we should look to snap up soon before they go to bigger clubs. Defour and Biglia who play in Belgium both have a good passing range and sensible heads on their shoulders and would make good signings if the bank isn’t broken for a world class player like Diego or van der Vaart.

  • 32 cloudstrife // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:09 PM

our biggest need is Defensive Midfield. Butt is shyte n we got no other options. though if no-one comes in then we could play Faye there, though he’s our best CB. for AM we got Emre, (or Smith if we got desperate). i believe Emre can unlock defences like Fabregas.

we really need to look further than the premiership for quality. though i’d rather have no buy than a panic, fan appeasing buy.

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:10 PM

    I disagree. Hear me out.

With a good defensive midfielder Emre or Zog can concetrate on attacking (therefore they will do better), or even better with a good defensive midfielder who can pass, they can be even more dangerous.

  • 34 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:12 PM

KK has MA millions to spend, he shud be offering Van Der Vaart a bigger contract than Owen has! GET VAN DER VAART!!!!

  • 35 toon1978 // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:18 PM

mincepie which site says Bentley nay join the toon

  • 36 toon1978 // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Sorry micepie not mincepie hahaha sorry

  • 37 Taiwan Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:24 PM

Van de vaart would be a very very good signing, although not likely. After all, he did go to Humberg several years ago(fook my spelling)! So we might just have a chance if we try.

I suppose the first signing of King Kev’s has to be a massive one to assure future potential signings that the club means to do it with ambitions. Well, we, as the fans, need it too.

  • 38 ANDY GLOS TOON // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:30 PM

No ones coming, read the signs there giving out!

  • 39 ronaldeano // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Van Der Vaart is coming, have faith man!!!!

  • 40 toon1978 // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Dont be so negative Andy Glos toon you never know

  • 41 hanzemre // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:35 PM

yea i must agree with Tom_Toon we desperately in need of a better DM/CM to cover our defense IMO. N’zogbia/ Emre could concentrate in our attacking side with their skills and passing.

  • 42 Steeley // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:37 PM

Tom Toon – I agree totally with Post 6 – what the hell is the obsession with Prem League players all about?!!? Sven has proven that they dont need Prem experience to play well….they just have to be good enough players! And if someone isnt fit enough to hack the pace of the premiership then quite frankly they’re not good enough anyway!

  • 43 RAHUL // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:37 PM

hey guys just read an interview from martins he was sick of BSA for not playing him enough and most often on the right wing cant disagree with it
in my humble opinion we need a dm with passing ability go for sebastian kehl of dortmund sheer class
and as an am we can either get arshavin or ozil from schalke for 7mill euros and i belive that our defence is getting better just need a dm to protect them better

  • 44 ANDY GLOS TOON // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:40 PM

I,m sorry , me ,the wife and boys are coming up from gloucester to watch middleborough next sunday.Looking forward to the day as ever but a couple of good players in would make my day!

  • 45 SuperShearer // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:41 PM

I’m fine with us not making any signings this month on the condition it’s because Kev doesn’t see anyone worthy enough and available to better the side. I just hope it is not because we cannot attract the right players. Barnes would be good, he’s very young and has all the attributes we need. Bentley would be amazing but I don’t see him leaving Blackburn. Van De Vaart is a pipe dream lads, Deco maybe but unlikely, Diego no chance. We looked better against Arsenal and when players come back from Africa Kev will have the equivalent of new signings to him. Be patient guys I am sure both Kev, Mort and Ashley are doing everything in their power.

  • 46 ADAM // Jan 27, 2008 at 5:41 PM

  • 47 ToonKing // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Giles Barnes, Deco and Bentley are the players strongly linked with us today. I would take them all whitout a moments hesitation.

I still have hope we will sing a couple.

  • 48 ToonKing // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:03 PM

the players are nice Adam, but your rating is bollox 😉

  • 49 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:09 PM

Rahul, i was thinking bout Kehl for dm, hes got nice passing ability, strength and good tackling ability, but always injured.

  • 50 toonfan1 // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:12 PM

how can sol campbell be rated as a mere 6? imo i think he is still great despite his age and i would give him an 8/9. i would love to have him at the toon

  • 51 brad // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:14 PM

KK will bring in good talent in the summer no player must like moving in jan very little time to settle in cozs ur playing that week so just w8 and wen the times right in the summer that is players will come……..i hope

  • 52 keeganpleasecomeback // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Carr playing well????that must be at the snooker or poker table cause it aint on the football pitch thats for sure…..lousy article ED

  • 53 leavy // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:20 PM

giles barnes is a lary twat
who would have the bowyer/ dyer effect
we dont need an attacking midfielder as milner n’zogbia are fine
and emre will be back soon he should be up there near the strikers
what we do need is a defensive midfielder
i dont know who or convert roz or faye into that position as butt was shittteee we need a striker who can score as i cant remember the last time we scored more than one in the league ashton would be good

  • 54 Marty // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Hey guys what bout Juninho from Lyon….now he has a passing talent, very creative midfielder!
I`m sure we could get him if we should him a bag of money. What yaz think?

  • 55 Marty // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:26 PM

Oops!the only thing is we cant provide him with ch league football.Shite n double shite.
Would be gr8 player for us though

  • 56 brad // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:27 PM

mike ashley has 1.9 billion pound cheak wikapedi, any way y dnt we just out bid for our players we can almost buy any 1 being relestic bu comon lossing out to spurs for woody this better not happen in the summer cozs if we dnt get the right ppl in then well were gonna really start to be a mid table team if we aint alrdy….

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:27 PM

We should just get a defensive midfielder with good passing ability, i.e. Toulalan, Mozart etc.

  • 58 keeganpleasecomeback // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Steven Pressley 9/10 you need lobotomy ADAM cause thats just a big joke as carrick coming back to toon…swap champions league with midtable (at best)….guys get real KK said only realistic targets such as players used to play in the epl….we do need a forward playing in the hole…Mickey Owen didnt look good against arsenal and i finally discovered why Alan Smith has been playin in midfield: cause he’s off side all the time – aginst arsenal i counted 8 off sides on smith..thats ridiculous..
we need aleft back (sorry guys Enrique is too slow-total waste of money….bring on bridge or shorey….a scoring midfielder i suggest Sidwell…(he cant play the chelsea system) and i think Milner looks tired…Bentley would be good cause we need someone who can deliver on set pieces….anyone agree or do i also need lobotomy

  • 59 Jeff // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Im surprised someone put we already have a creative midfield player in Emre….Well Im sorry but he hasnt lit my fire at all..ok a spark now and again but he aint no Beardsley or Gascoigne.I thought he was supposed to be the turkish Maradona..Well he has done hardly any attacking or creative passing since he has been here,a Huge disappointment in my eyes…Id ship him out along with Shola…Viduka…and geremi…..There will be players available but like Keegan says they have to be better than we already have….Dean Ashton would fit the bill spot onat least he moves unlike Viduka…

  • 60 micepie // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Toon 1978, this is the site rumouring Bentley but I doubt it’s a site worthing putting too much faith in!£20m_swoop_liverpool/1001,6827

Best copy and paste that, because a Live link doesn’t seem to work!

I only want us to splash big cash on a mf or two if they’re the right ones to be a catalyst for us. Only if Bentley is that, we should fax in an offer of 11M or whatever it takes.

  • 61 micepie // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:30 PM

I take it back – the link did transfer!

  • 62 daiv // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:30 PM

No signings in January but we’ll be great next seaon as long as we avoid relegation. Our midfield is useless. Butt and geremi are too slow. Central midfield players need to go past opponents and ours cannot. You cannot pass your way through a team. You need to be able to go past your opponent to draw out the defence. The top teams have fast skillful players. We have slow skillful players. The Toon must have the slowest team in the league. But Kev will put it right next season if we survive. Still its a worry that he cannot attract good players…never mind great players. Its going to be a long haul back. I predict wel will win Carling Cup before Kev retires and Shearer takes over. The League? Big Mike will have to spend a few hundred million for that and put players on £150K a week. Am not sure I want to sell the clubs soul for that.

  • 63 leavy // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:31 PM

mate forget about gascoigne ginola and beardsley them days have long gone
emres the best we have and are gonna get
and with a run of games he will be class
    and ashton would be class

  • 64 micepie // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:37 PM

I don’t think we’re slow – just ponderous and lacking in confidence. Smith and Butt are solid, but getting us nowhere though. One outstanding mf could make a major difference. I’ve only seen Van De Vaart for a whole game once (tv)…he wan’t at all convincing, but…shooot, I don’t know. I’d love to see KK get the very best out of Emre.

  • 65 brad // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:38 PM

i think it time newcastle tried the 3-4-3 formation after this season face it if we use it we can spend less money on defenders and more on middfield ,at least with 3 up front we might be able to create more chance cozs 4-4-2 dnt work on a team whos got no holding middfeilders

  • 66 nightfall // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:38 PM

    Marty – juninho is 35 or…no…

i’ve been saying all along that we need a DMC…
    so : vieira/carrick/appiah/mascherano…you pick 🙂

Nightfall we cant attract Woody what chance have we got with vieira/carrick/appiah/mascherano.

  • 69 toon1978 // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:54 PM

    Lets get Andrei Arshavin

  • 70 Obafan // Jan 27, 2008 at 6:58 PM

I’ve already said it, I rather have no new players in January than ending up with someone like Onyewu (last season). He did not strengthen our team and that is the main goal when a new player enters in January. So for now we have a good team if everybody is fit:

Beye – Cacapa – Faye – Enrique (really is starting to progress)
    Duff – Emre – Butt – N’Zogbia
    Owen – Martins

    Subs: Harper – Taylor- Rozehnal – Milner – Viduka – Smith – LuaLua – …

Really with these players we can get good results.

  • 71 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Nightfall, more realistic but similar: Rolfes, Toulalan, Mozart, Makoun, Mavuba

or your tough tackling dm’s: De Rossi, Vukojevic, Cana

or all rounders: de Jong etc.

  • 72 Tom_Toon // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Obafan, i agree with that line-up except for Butt. Either switch Faye there and bring in Taylor or buy a new dm, you just proved the whole theory of who we need, because that line-up with a decent dm should and could be aiming for top 6.

  • 73 Swede1891 // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Just wanna say that i totally agree with Ashton…That´s the ideal formation..and Emre is a genious! Wouldnt even swap him with Fabregas…No new players needed for now.

  • 74 Dragoner // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:21 PM

Everyone can see what we need

    – we desperately need a DM, Butt is no good.

    – we need our wingers to be coached better on their defensive duties. Look at Tottenham, now malbranque and lennon protect the full backs they are a much better defensive unit.

    – we need an assistant manager like carlos quieros who knows a lot about foreign players, transfers etc, as it is clear Keegan does not know anything about players, which is why he is looking solely in the premiership.

  • 75 Mac // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:24 PM

We’re not getting anyone in the Jan window and from what i can gather Woodgate is the only player we’ve actually put a bid in for. On the up side when the boys get back from the African cup of nations it’s gonna be like having 3 top new players in Martins,Beye and Faye but i would have liked to have got 2 or 3 new faces and shed some of the dead wood

  • 76 M. Stockley // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:30 PM

yeah it will be great to have beye faye and oba back but hopefully geremi has been shot in the legs or something, it still makes my blood boil that he was captain, he sucks balls!

  • 77 Obafan // Jan 27, 2008 at 7:34 PM

Tom_Toon: IMO Taylor is the one who always gets credit, but hre makes mistake after mistake. When he yesterday jumped under that ball and then laughed with it, I was so annoyed with such an attitude. So for me he can go and warm the bench; Cacapa is by miles better then Taylor…

Butt perhaps not always playing good, but you have to look at who he is played with. Zog always losing his ball, Smith not good as midfielder. So Butt often has to cover up position for his mate in the center of our midfield. If he just could play in front of our defence then I’m confident that he would play good…

  • 78 iain // Jan 27, 2008 at 9:01 PM

the fact we have no quality at all in cm in some peoples eyes says how desperate we are although imo zog and emre are ok.

we could potentially need to sign 3 new cm to get us where we want to be, also selling duff and moving zog to lw full time. bring in a dfm and acm and some young talent as cover.

so we might as well be trying to sign someone now.

butt is terrible, wouldnt surprise me if we flogged him the best he could do was end up at sheff utd or some lower half championship side.

its alright saying we will play the kids for the rest of the season except look at our sqaud, what kids do we have that play in cm… no one.

rb/ch at least we have two good players to come back in beye and faye and uptop we have oba.

so imo this window we need a lb and cm desperatly.

and it wont be hard to find someone better than our current cm.

  • 79 scott9 // Jan 27, 2008 at 11:25 PM

at leats one thing is good i think kk will like emre so he will play regualarly gutted about getting no one in though what the hell happened to pandev we need midfileders we should try and get someone on loan at least however this would not be a bad team for the rest of the season
    beye cacapa taylor enrique
    duff faye emre zog
    owen martins
    summer ins
    van buyten 3m
    barzagli 10m
    bridge 5m
    scott brown 8m
    pandev 11m
    dmf 7m
    swp 12m
= 56m however we probably dont have that to spend

  • 80 smc894 // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:20 AM

Just play Emre, atleast he can put the ball to owens feet.

  • 81 nufctj // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:21 AM

    how about santiago munez?

  • 82 nufctj // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:35 AM

realistically my fellow black and white brethren, the goal this season is to get enough points to get into the non-relegation safety zone and start playing a more attractive, attacking, KK style. We are seeing sings of the latter and hopefully the former will come once we get past Arsenal.

What did we all think? ??? that once KK came back Ronaldo, Drogba and Kaka would take the next train to the Toon? patience Geordies, patience!

Sir Bobby’s first two years at the Toon were 11th place finishes. The third year we accumulated 71 points and went to the Champions League.

emre is a genius are you mad maybes 4 year ago

i dont think anyone really expects any big signings this window, but we need someone to give fans and players a lift.

  • 86 iain // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:25 AM

still think come the last day we might get van buyten on loan, giles barnes and barry robson.

just think keegan will be trying for real quality first.

if we got those 3 players, we could always send van buyten back, barnes is for the future and a very good squad player. if robson doesnt work out he wont of cost much, if he does he could be the best argain toon signing in years.

santiago munez would be great! But he left us for real madrid remember? Along with woodie and that twat gavin harris. 😉

We let Woodgate slip through our fingers, Spuds are simply more ambitious that us at the moment. Simple as that.
Ashley/Mort/Keegan may have a master plan but if no one is signed in the next few days then it is clear that survival is only objective this season.

IanG….It’s not as simple as Spurs being more ambitious. Be realistic – Woodgate is 28 – he’s signed a 3 and a half year deal. Much as I hate to say it but they look like they are going places under Ramos. Woodgate can play in the LC final next month and at the rate they are going they’ll get into Europe next year. H

He will also be able to play in the UEFA cup this year – at his age he cannot wait around for a Keegan “revolution” that may take 3 – 4 years.

Emre is always knackered so we need an attacking/creative midfielder.

Deco, Giles Barnes, Baptista, Arshavin, one of those.

Forget Woodgate, just shows he mustnt have liked it here as that is now twice, so I dont want him again playing for us.

I have to agree with nufctj. We need to have some stability within the playing group at the moment. For some reason the boys can’t play out the 90 mins and this is the worry.

Sign the boys up that are prepared to play for the black and white and bring in young talented players that can be nurtured.

We unfortunately aren’t playing well enough to be thinking top 6 at the moment. So, if confidence can be bottled, we may need to order some.

Although Jose Enrique played some reasonable football against arsenal in the 1st half on sat against arsenal he is still a fish out of water with poor vision and footwork, his finest talents are his ability to play risky balls and fail to pay attention to any offside trap set up by centre backs. Solution is wayne bridge but with Cashley Hole has shot that one in the foot with his messing off the pitch.

Midfield in 1st half against arsenal looked well, duff and Zoggers combining well with the talentless Nicky Butt proping up the midfield. Owen didn’t look a threat and Smith although he tries very hard doesn’t look like he will ever score a goal, Martins is wasteful and moans too much, Viduka is lazy but he was free so cant complain too much.

If it was feesable to scrap all strikers and start over it wud be ideal. In an ideal world i wud love Defoe and Carew/Kanoute but 2 out of three of them are a no no. Mascherano for midfield, Emre is the man so Deco doesn need to book his ryanair flights just yet.

  • 94 Michael // Jan 28, 2008 at 4:14 PM

We desperately need a creative midfielder but I can’t think of any good ones with premiership experience. So either we are going to sign somebody shit or nobody at all.

  • 95 Wilsiak // Jan 28, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Enrique is pants, has no touch and ability to ruin offside trap, ideal replacement = Wayne Bridge

Emre when fit is the man, duff looks good and Milner + Zoggers know whats going on so if Barton stops fighting the general public there could be possibilities, Nicky Butt should be committed to a home.

All forwards are unconvincing with a major lack of goals, bring in Defoe and go back in time to capture Big John Carew, Dean Ashton could do a job, leave Crouchie for the circus.

I for one am delighted that, after all the bluster and nonsense, that we are going to build the club on solid foundations. Let Keegan see what he has got and build something solid.

For a long as I am remember (I started with the Mags in 1960) we have been too keen to make a splash for the sale of it. No strategy, no planning.

Let’s do it properly for once.
