Little Chance of Newcastle Attracting Deco

The Mail on Sunday is reporting that Barcelona’s Deco says he wants to leave the club in the summer, if the club doesn’t win any trophies this season.

Deco – little chance of Newcastle getting Portuguese playmaker

However, 30 year old Deco has not been used much this season by coach Frank Rijkaard, and it may be best for Deco to leave in the summer, whatever happens.

Deco has acknowledged his days at Barcelona may be coming to an end when he said:

“It’s not a question of whether I feel valued or not, it’s because I want to win.”

“If I can’t help the club win, perhaps I should leave.”

There will be a number of clubs interested in getting Deco in the summer, and it’s already being reported that Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, as well as Newcastle United, may be interested.

But to be realistic here, we don’t think Newcastle will stand too much of a chance of luring the Portuguese midfielder, since we’ll not be able to offer European Football, let alone the Champions League next season.

So we’ll not build our hopes up, but there are a number of other playmakers that seem good and are available, such as Russian captain Andrei Arshavin, amongst others. With Joey Barton out and Emre suspended, it’s been obvious that we need more creative drive in central midfield, to allow us to play the way Keegan’s want the team to play.

It’s just a pity we couldn’t get a playmaker in during January. The more we get in now, the less risky it will be, because they’ll have time to settle in before the start of next season. The coming season has to be a key season for us, after the bitter disappointment of this one for Geordie fans. 🙁

But how many times in the past have we said that?

If we don’t sign anybody in January, we’ll need to sign quite a few players in the summer, so we hope we’ll do that early on, to give the players more time to bed in, before the season starts in August.

We are disappointed that we haven’t done more in the transfer market, although we were warned that if the right players are not available we’ll not be signing anybody. With losing yesterday, and Woodgate deciding not to come back to Newcastle, we need something positive to lift the spirits of the Geordie fans.

A win on Tuesday night would do that – however unlikely that may be.

What do you think about all of this?

Comments very welcome.

if a premiership team is going to attract deco, it will be a uefa cup/cl competing team, and thats not us.
we’ve been linked with bentley today but there’s no way he’ll come to us either.

Forget him! thirty + players are no way to build a team. Prefer an Arshevin and a Bentley, young and the proven article.

is it just me, or is the optimism fast disappearing from the tyne? such as certain reports in the papers here, transfer targets lack of belief in the club and results, personally i think newcastle cant be expected to beat teams like arsenal anymore, and we are truely a mid table team now, this is obviously gonna effect transfer targets. we need to start aiming for what we are, we cant compete with people like chelsea, man yoo, arsenal etc for players cos we arent them…. we need to have a long rebuilding plan built up, and not expect to be in europe year after year, we need to get a bit of perspective, we havent won anything in a while, why would the worlds best players jump at the chance to come here….

We shouldn’t even waste our time. We should be after players a tier down who can still contribute a great deal and get us moving in the right direction. We need to build carefully and with very specific goals in mind. Let’s face it, to get someone like deco we’d have to pay outrageous sums and that’s NOT the way to build a team for the long haul. We need to be patient. Maybe next year we can challenge for a UEFA slot. That should be our goal for next year. If we don’t get it, oh well. Once we can get regular UEFA football then we can worry about world class players and making a challenge for the CL. But we’re not gonna get players with CL ambition right now. If we bring in players like deco it means that they’ve decided to write off their careers for a lorry full of dosh. That’s not the kinda players we need here.

Doesn’t look like we’ll be getting anyone in until the summer. Looks like KK is going to have to work with what he has at the moment, he is going to have to work his magic and instill some confidence in his team.
But with the Africans back we should be OK, I think Beye and Martins in particular will blossom under Keegan. Personally I don’t think we have a bad squad just a bit thin in numbers and lacking confidence.

seem’s as much as people are trying to shut out the press , they keep knocking away at us and one by one kick the hope out of each fan .
time to break out the cheque book and offer some serious cash to players to get them here .
if were to compete we are going to have to scale the wage structure anyway .
i refuse to let the press’s negativity get to me ,we are a club that can attract big players , it just depends on how much we want them and the lengths we will go to get them .

we will have to get english players as many of the ones from outside are only looking for the top teams and only want the glory of playing for teams in euro comps. we need english who know all about what we are about and have a genuine desire to play for us for who we are. there is no doubt about it, we desperatly need a prem win as i can not hardly rememeber the last one now…….and thats a bad sign in my book. i am not even thinking about arse as its a cert we will c0me away with a draw at best and even thats if we get a miricle. the next home game though is critical in my book. woody not coming now eh.. bollocks to him then. i do not think that spurs are as big a club as us at all and i bet if the league average was to be calculated out since the begining of when we went into prem mode then we would be higher. at the minute spurs are around about where we are in the table too so why is he not coming to us? damn shame as he is very good when not lying on his back in the docs – which is always half a season at least.

im just worried…. worried that we cant attract top players, players distance themselves from us when even linked with the club ( eg richards). Dont get me wrong kk hasnt had much time to think about players, but unfortunatly when you come in as a manager and only have a couple of weeks of window left and your squad is under par and thin and you have a owner with lots of money, you should just go for it… atleast try and lure players. if woody was the only bid he made then he has failed to understand that.

    This is what will happen;
    1. KK will learn which players he has at the Toon now
    2. KK will sort out who he needs and who he doesn’t need
    3. KK will sell his not needed players in the summer
    4. meanwhile KK will start to search new players to stengthen his team. He will contact them and persuade them in the summer.

Let’s face it, the players we have now are not bad, they just need to be played in their right positions and KK willgive them the confidence which SA did not give.

    Beye – Cacapa – Faye – Enrique
    Duff – Butt – Emre – N’Zogbia
    Owen – Martins

    SUBS: Harper – Roz – Taylor – Milner – Viduka – Smith – LuaLua

That is a good team if they all play with the confidence….

Now we have to be patient!!!!

If we are in need of a winger, which i think we do, then Zé Kalanga of angola is very good,at only 24 plays for Boavista and just watche him in the acn and hes a typical winger, runs fast, hogs the line and has great delivery.

Lets get real, Ashley and Mort are business people they will build slowly. KK is in place to do that, thats why we have signed nobody. Thats why we are signing young talent like Kadar etc. You better get used to midtable for the next few seasons with few signings only youngsters, its a good plan and the only way into the top 4. I suggest if you cant stay with this come back in 3 years.

We can’t attract any real talent because we are now truly a mid-table side. The best we can do is scour the world for rejects, and for outcasts of the top sides. Or, we could try and lure players from the Championship (something which is not a good idea, e.g. Fulham). The sad part is that Keegan won’t even plug the inherent gaps in midfield. He is happy to sit back while Butt scores an own goal, makes a mistake every few minutes, and displays to us the embarrassing first-touch, and his truly appalling short-passing. No use arguing. The best we can do now is probably, Giles Barnes from Derby. But even that’s doubtful, as Villa, and West Ham have long been interested in him.

If we were ever going to sign Deco, it should have been 10 years ago when he was 20.

We should be looking at world class players in their early to mid 20’s with plenty of time to play football still. Players who are younger, hungry and willing to fight for their team.
Deco was once like that, sadly, he is no longer – and I do know this, I watch him almost weekly and am actually going to the Camp Nou next weekend.

There is a never ending stream of talented, young athletic players coming through, all with the potential to be world class.

Take Giles Barnes for example. He is a player I’d love to see nurtured by Keegan – and he’d cost far, far less, still have an immediate impact and could play for another 10 years.
Yep, Deco’s proven quality but certainly not in the Premiership…

There’s players out there, we may not get them in January, but we will in the summer.

Woodgate, Deco, Edmilson etc, 28, 30 and 32 respectively – expensive, injury prone, sulky and hardly the long term future of Newcastle United…

Tom Cairns – I agree, why buy if those who are avilable are not as good as the players we already have in the squad. Come on give KK a chance and allow him to do a job – Like I said when I returned last night, we were outstanding in the 1st half and the begining of 2nd half, unfortunately, Arsenal scored and our heads fell.. Be real KK’s had 9 days with SA players and made such a difference already…. He’ll buy the right playes at the right price when the time is right… Seriously, anyone who watched the game on TV last night don’t be fooled, we were 10x better [BRILLIANT] then highlits showed us to be in the 1st half..!

    Hello B&W Blood.
I wasn’t there but listened to it on the radio whilst decorating my House and I can tell you from the commentary (maybe biased admittedly) we sounded very good. In fact I can’t remeber being that excited while listening for a long, long time. I really thought we where going to do it which I can’t say I have thought for some time.
Well done to everyone who were there, I could hear the army blasting out and out singing the arsenal. All that is needed for the time being is our Africans back and a healthy dose of Keegan injected confidence.
I am still very optimistic, taking BSA team to the Emirates after only 9 days in charge and still giving them a go (first half I suppose) is improvement indeed.

All I can say despite the negativity surrounding the club, I’m still optimistic. Splashing the cash is not the solution, definitely not in this transfer window. Save the cash for the summer, we will rebuild and shut the mouth of those doubters.

I have faith in the club, the owner, the chairman and the manager, all the way down to the tea lady. Things are about to change, trust me! Howay the lads!!
