Woodgate – No Shearer Was Reason To Reject Newcastle

The Sunday Sun is reporting today that the reason Woodgate finally turned down Newcastle United is because Alan Shearer was not made Kevin Keegan’s number 2.

Jonathan Woodgate – wanted Shearer number 2 at Newcastle

This is what the local Sunday paper is claiming today, but it seems a bizarre reason from Woodgate, who of course played with Shearer when Jonathan was at the club from January 2003 until August, 2004.

Apparently Newcastle had already made the deal with Middlesbrough, and Woodgate before Keegan talked at length with Shearer on Thursday evening.

Alan Woodgate, Jonathan’s father, told the Sunday Sun today:

“The only way he would have gone to Newcastle is if Shearer was No 2 to Kevin Keegan,”

“He is going to Tottenham. I have driven him to the station to go down there today for a medical and talks.

“Provided it all goes OK, the deal should be finalized over the weekend.”

So Woodgate will move to White Hart Lane, unless something just as peculiar happens again. To us this seems a lack of confidence in Keegan by Woodgate. This still seems so peculiar to us, if this is the real reason Woodgate would not come back to Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

Hells Bells. Shearer has Sweet FA to do with the Woodgate snub. He didn’t want to come, let’s move on. He’d have only bust his leg, sprained his ear lobe, broken a nail or ruffled his hair sooner or later anyway. Yes a comitted fit Woodgate would have been lovelybut he doesn’t have a history of either so bugger him (not literally of course) 🙂

The real reason Woody did not come back is that he fears he could not oust Taylor and Faye……

His loss not ours as far as I’m concerned.

IF that is the reason and I very much doubt it then it’s pathetic. Let ur Dad take you to the station and wipe ur nose for ya too !

Bit of a shame a “Local” newspaper has to come up with this sort of shite.

Its about time the madia would just let us get on with it and stop coming up with arsehole stories to try and drag on the circus to sell more papers.

Woodgates a wanker anyway. I live in billingham and you should her what he gets up to in the “Tall Trees”. Tosser.

What do you guys think we need more: a creative attacking midfield, or a solid defensive midfielder with a great engine and some passing ability?

I think the defensive midfielder as if Emre or Zog stayed up in attacking position instead of coming back to defend i think they would do much better.

We have had enough injury prone uncommitted players with huge potential (Dyer Etc) we don’t need another one in Woodgate. Pathetic excuse similar to the last time when he said the manager never made enough effort. Speak to some of the smogs they say he is not all that good, and there are a lot of off field problems. Center Midfield is def our weakest area.

If it stops us getting cr*p lame duck players, then lets keep Shearer as not our no. 2.

Tom_Toon I reckon a Van Bommell and a Cambiasso would be just the job for us. But they won’t be coming in this window.

Woodgate is someone with no loyalty at all trying to pretend he has some. Probably is going to Spurs b/c their training table is more comfortable than the Toon’s.

I would say a box to box player. A midfielder who can score 10 league goals a season. At the minute though our strikers can’t even manage that!

i thin k we should by a Good DM..who can actually pass the ball(Bot like Butt)
A good creative CM,Zogbia is good and Emre too,but if we can get another one it would be fine…And a good Left back…and last but most important a good quality Attacker who can team up with martins and owen ,a player like ..Berbatov,good with both head and feet…

ANd plz i beg u keegan get butt out!

I think it’s all the more embarrassing for this Dad! At the end of the day I know newspapers make stuff up, but if they have directly quote Woodgate’s father then I’m sure he did say it.

Pretty poor excuse anyway – best to be shot of him really! Will be a laugh to see how often he gets in the team as Spurs have signed another CB today as well.

    Ah well, next please….

I don’t doubt this is a snub aimed at Keegan by Timber dick. He likes to see himself as a bit of a wide boy and I reckon he thinks KK hasn’t got the necessary. Personally I think we are probably better of without his questionable loyalty, and his less than professional attitude to his profession.

ppl, i feel we’re abit sour..
when u’re first linked with woody (whom i think is one of the best defender for us in recent years), we’re all jumping for joy.
Now, we’re sour when he decides to snub us.

well, we shld face some facts, we’re a sleeping giant thats losing its popularity.
we have a great team, but results show likewise.
we have to admit that we’re not that good afterall.
but we have passion and we love our club,
thats the drive the club and supporters should drive at.
we still have a chance for a slow comeback!

    Howay the lads!

It seems the written press will snipe at Newcastle evry chance they get.
Sack Woodgate as well. I personally didn’t want him in the first place.
Let’s get someone who is consistently in the team and not just as consistently out of it through injury.

Woody was my fav player and i idolised him when at newcastle but he obv has no loyalty… does anyone remember when he left for madrid he said madrid was the only team he would have left for and to save the number 6 shirt cuz he may be back one day, since qouting that he has snubbed us twice and if i was a smoggie id be disapointed cuz just months ago the guy said he would finsih his career at boro!

Shearer needs to make his French Connection-U.K-ing mind up as well.
What we need least is more confusion surrounding what’s going on concerning his position.
    C’mon Al… If you’re in you’re in and if you’re out you’re out.
Just stop F*nnying around and make your mind up if you have indeed been offered your position of choice.
Other than that, Kev needs to lead from the front and take control of the situation, killing the uncertainty.
These concerns are not doing what is “best for the club” and not helping Keegan settle in either.

Woodgate is a sicknote anyway so no great loss – I’ll be happy with Taylor and Faye as Centre halfs – and we have Rozie, Cacapa as back up – now Kev, go and spend the money on Bentley!

It must be pretty hard to be dumped by your boyhood club, clearly Southgate sees £8mil as a better option than having Woodgate at his disposal, oh well.

Agree Greg B – what does that say about Woodgate when even the smoggies don’t want him?? We’ll be doing alright with Taylor and Faye, and we have Cacapa, Rozy and a couple of the kids as backups should we need them.

We don’t need a new LB as a priority. What we do need is a decent right mid who knows how to hug the whitewash, beat at least one player and put a decent cross in. Also, depending on Barton’s situation, we could maybe do with a new engine for the centre though I’m impressed with zog (if only he could tackle as well). As for DM, I’d consider giving Rozy a game since he can pass better than Butt, could hardly be worse and can be reasonably dangerous going forwards.

Woodgate has made only 187 appearances in the 10 years since he started with Leeds in 1998. His promise has always been great, but he has a terrible injury record. We have missed out on nothing, especially if he does not want to be here.

Toon_under, completely agree about Roz. He ain’t worse than Butt, and looked pretty good against Bolton. Butt just wastes far too much possession. We’ve seen that again and again. Roz deserves a run out in the DM role, esp since it’s really doubtful that we’ll get anyone else before the summer.
