Arsenal Swoop For Woodgate

11:49 am, Monday, January 28th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

Former Newcastle United defender Jonathan Woodgate is now also set to turn down Tottenham Hotspur in favor of a shock move to Arsenal, which is being reported today by Sky Sports.

Jonathan Woodgate – now signing for Arsenal?

Tottenham were expected to be odds-on favorites to sign Jonathan, after he had turned down Newcastle United over the weekend, and he passed a Spurs medical yesterday in London. Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb revealed earlier today the club had also accepted an offer from another club, now believed to be Arsenal.

Lamb told Sky Sports:

“We’ve agreed a fee with Tottenham and as far as I’m aware he went down at the weekend to have a medical and we’re just waiting to see,”

“We agreed a fee with Tottenham, Newcastle and another club but we left it up to Jonathan, he could stay or go.”

Woodgate has been troubled by injuries throughout his career, but when fit he is an excellent defender. On reflection, it seems that Arsenal would be a great move for him, given he doesn’t want to return to Tyne-side.

It allows him to play in the European Champions league, and start to win things, which he hasn’t achieved yet in his career.

Comments welcome.

Good for him…Very Good player…dissapointed about him not coming to us however if he does not fancy the challenge then we must move on…Arsenal or Tottenham….hmmm…I know who I would pick…ps wonder who he gonna speak to in the changies cos they are all foreign…saying that, being from the Boro, his English isnt up to much anyhow ;)

  • 5 MIKE HOOPERS POOPER SCOOPER // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Why would he go to Arsenal? He won’t even get a game! Gallas and Toure are first choices.

  • 6 MIKE HOOPERS SUPER DUPER POOPER SCOOPER // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:18 PM

He’ll play. He’ll win stuff too.

  • 11 Hammy // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Agree with UTD111, Woodgate averages 20 games a season if your lucky, makes Owen look like Superman….

I like Jonasan very much, i didn’t see the incident involving any of my players as i was eating a croissant. he will make my oustanding team of french players be more eeeenglish as he is english. I also like drinking wine.

All this cobblers about Arsenal not signing him because he is English.
Do you lot know that The Arsenal have the most English players in their youth set up?
No I didnt think you knew that……so just because the 1st team isnt mainly English dont be so bloody quick to judge. They probably speak better English than most Geordies

  • 17 LoonyToon // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:55 PM

oh Sue…I think I have just picked ur teddy up…shall I put it back in your pram….Newsflash “Arsenal have a few English players in their youth set up…oh hang on…they are all being farmed out as we speak…Arsene does not think they are up to the job”…..same old same old dear…come back on in two years time and confirm to us “thick Geordies” how many are in your team….I will go for zip all…

  • 18 George // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Let him go. If he wanted to come to Newcastle he would not have spoken to other clubs. He is not interested, even though he told Freddy Shepard to keep the No 5 shirt free for him to take back when he returned to england.
Only get players who want to come and play.

You’re kidding about Gallas being nothing without Toure right?

  • 20 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 1:01 PM

Who cares if they re not English anyway. As long as they win! thats all that matters.

  • 21 Johann // Jan 28, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Gallas is one of the best defenders in the world. He really has got everything. It´s more like Toure is nothing without Gallas :)

Saves us paying his medical bills.

  • 23 Bill f // Jan 28, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Personally I wouldn’t have him now if he changed his mind and offered to come on a free with reduced wages. There has to be plenty of players as good who would like to play for us. I am sure Tom-Toon could suggest a few. I havn’t seen any of the Africa cup but I bet there several (unknowns!!) wanting to be found.

  • 27 LoonyToon // Jan 28, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Villa? Melberg on his way to Juve could be a sign or maybe the smogs want Spurs to up their offer and this “3rd club” is just a smokescreen…. as for the journalism Luke…bang on…just like the other 99.99% of the rubbish that is written

  • 28 Sue // Jan 28, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Its on the Arsenal Official Website:
Arsène Wenger has denied any interest in signing Jonathan Woodgate.

The Middlesbrough centre back is in the process of a move away from the Riverside Stadium after Tottenham and Newcastle agreed a fee with the North-East club.

On Monday morning, it was reported that a third team had matched that valuation and speculation centred on Arsenal.

Speaking to the Matchday Programme ahead of the game with Newcastle, Wenger laid the rumour to rest.

“I do not know where that story came from,” he said. “There is no truth in it at all. We have never been in touch with Middlesbrough about Jonathan Woodgate.”
