January Transfer Window Looking A Dud For Newcastle

10:30 am, Monday, January 28th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 38 Comments

Kevin Keegan is readying the Newcastle fans that it’s possible we’ll get nobody in during the January transfer window, which ends at midnight this Thursday.

Giles Barnes – Derby’s exciting young 19 year old midfielder

Kevin still has some interest in right-back Pascal Chimbonda of Tottenham Hotspur, and is still understood to be monitoring Derby County midfielder Giles Barnes, the young and promising 19 year-old midfielder.  But the prospect of no senior players arriving on Tyneside this month is a realization that is setting in.    :(

Kevin Keegan told the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“It won’t be the end of the world if I get nobody,” “I think we’ve lost Woodgate, I would be delighted if I was wrong and I don’t think it’s set in stone yet but that’s my honest opinion.”“I would have been quite happy just to have him in this transfer window, that would have been enough for me.”

“Spurs can offer the chance to play in a cup final, they’re definitely in Europe this year and they’re definitely in Europe next year because they’re playing Chelsea in the Carling Cup final.” They can offer him that, which we can’t – unless we get a ferry!”

We would be pleased if we get Giles Barnes, because he can play the flowing attacking football that Keegan is renowned for, and there’s no doubt he’s loaded with skill and potential.  Chimbonda would be OK, but we’re quite strong at right back with Habib Beye, probably playing as well as anybody brought in last summer.

But there’s no doubt the news about Woodgate over the weekend has served as a cold wet blanket for Newcastle fans in this transfer window.  Still don’t know why he would ever prefer Spurs to Newcastle.     :D

Comments welcome.

    barnes would be alright,
just the fact he’s a young prospect to mould!
    Roll on summer spending kev

it says on nufc.co.uk that arsenal have a bid for woodgate accepted aswell!!! does anyone not want to sign woodgate

  • 3 big dunc // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:37 AM

arsenal have had a bid accepted for woodgate too, , but the reason he chose spurs over us is cos there a team on the up in a cup final, in europe, have a proven top class manager, and are as much as it pains to say it are a bigger club than us now

  • 4 JMC // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:38 AM

not really, been there already, he cant even get into boros side, does no one realise this

  • 5 SuperShearer // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Transfer window isn’t shut yet, I hear rumblings that Sol Campbell and Wes Brown are still possibilities, plus have heard that one other could be coming in. Kev seems to be playing his cards close to his chest and covering his back. If we sign no one he can say it was intentional, if we do sign someone we’ll all be delighted….clever Kev.

I just wonder if KK/Morts have perhaps made some bids behind the scenes and not had much success and this is why we arent looking like we’ll sign anyone this week?

What happened to making cheeky bids on M.Richards/Dunne? Arshavin is still available, might be worth a shot. I realise we shouldnt be panic buying, but we are lacking in every area just like in the summer, we need a couple of players to help the lads through the season.

Has Kevin’s 3-year period out of football, during which he didn’t watch any live matches, resulted in him being off the pace in terms of bringing in new players this month?

And can we really get through the rest of the season safely without any additions to the squad?

Is he aware of how long the team’s current run of bad form has been going on? Two league wins since October, achieved against sides currently in the bottom 5.

And is he aware of how difficult the fixtures are through to the end of the season?

  • 8 Graeme // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:48 AM

As long as any signing is an improvement on what we already have, fine. If no signings in this window, it wont be the end of the world, we wont get relegated.

It gives Keegan time to fully appraise what he has actually got, over the rest of the season and gives him a lot more time to prepare for the summer transfer window instead.

SuperShearer, I am sure Wes Brown has signed a new contract at Man U. LADS! ! I am ALWAYS ALWAYS optomistic and I am still this season. Thats why I can only see Newcastle United this season only pushing for a possible Inter Toto cup spot. Sorry but we have a lot of catching up to do with the likes of Everton, Villa, Portsmouth this season.

  • 10 AdamCF // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Bring in Barnes.. a 6ft Teenage Midfielder. Exactly what we need.

  • 11 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:02 AM

15 full games left to play this season!!!!!! its not at all motivating and right to hear your manager say that the only way we can get into Europe is by getting on a ferry!!!!

  • 12 sirjasontoon // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Since the days when keegan was last here we have seen many sides now pass us by in terms of attracting players and the position they finish in the table.

I knew that signings would be few and far between and the players we have been linked with are normally second rate..eg chimbonda, giles barnes and various spl players etc these guys will win us nothing.

If Ashley was ambitious he would have spent big this window and that would give players the chance to bed in by next season.

  • 13 Callum // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Lets take a ferry then! Or try finishing 8/9th for teh inter-toto? :x

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Any one see Chikhaoui last night? Awesome.

Toulalan and Chikhaoui = Europe next season.

  • 15 AdamCF // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:16 AM

I thought they scrapped the Intertoto?

  • 16 paul the pom // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:23 AM

i reckon this is the first time in a few years where maybe not buying anyone is a good thing.we have loads of new players still settling in and unless we can buy that world class player we all crave why should we waste any more money on second rate crap, because thats what we have done in the past few years and look where we are.second rate.why do we need woodgate.the blokes had more injuries than dyer and owen put together,it unsettles me to here keegan say how dissapointed he is to miss out on him.he cant get in the boro side for christ sake.he is living on past glories and i’m glad he’s gonna be warming someone elses treatment table.i reckon steve sidwell would be a good acquisition to our midfield .a star in the making.

  • 17 Neil A H // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:44 AM

If we don’t bring anyone in it will be a disappointment but we do have some youngsters we could use in Lua Lua, Carroll, Edgar, and Troisi. It may be a blessing in disguise if they get some experience.

  • 18 AdamCF // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Nice to see a positive spin Neil. I agree totally.. we need to blood some of these youngsters.. After all Jimmy T could be the next Harry Kewell.. (I mean in the good sense and not the injury prone aspect).

  • 19 Alan Riley // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Tom_Toon – You have been going on about Chikhaoui for some time. Last night was my first viewing of him. He certainly looks a helluva player – with the physical attributes & skill levels to succeed in the Premiership. Count me in as a recruit to your campaign to get him to sign for NUFC. I have also liked the look of Mohamed Zidan. What can you tell us about Toulalan?

  • 20 ToonRich // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:40 PM

I think Barnes could be a good squad player, and eventually improve the midfield, as at the moment he’s no better than what we have!

I’d like to see a BIG name come in before deadline, even if it’s for the sake of keeping the fans happy!lol. I’m with you Neil, give the youngsters a chance also – play with the no-fear attitude and we might suprise opponents.

  • 21 ToonRich // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Tom_toon, get a banner up in SJP
“KK – SIGN CHIKHAOUI” It might inspire him! :-)

  • 22 Gooderz // Jan 28, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Chikhaoui certainly is a good player and has the abilities to play out wide or in the hole behind the strikers as well as being an out-and-out striker himself.

  • 23 mikeygd // Jan 28, 2008 at 1:21 PM

barnes and chimbonda just aren’t good enough. N,zogs is a better prospect and beye is better as well, they would make the bench if that.

  • 24 keegan 1 // Jan 28, 2008 at 2:03 PM

    mikeygd-

barnes would do a better job in cm than any other palyer we have at the club and in my opinion anyone could do better than enrique.

  • 25 Bill f // Jan 28, 2008 at 2:25 PM

With 3 days to go it don’t look good, but I would agree with the thoughts that it is better to wait and get some real quality in the Summer. We will soon have the African players back and we have some really good youngsters, KK might as well blood some of them when we have low expectations so they are primed for next year. The big target for me now for this year is to pass the 40 point mark.

I would be reaaly surprised now if we signed (anybody) a trophy player.

  • 26 boywatts // Jan 28, 2008 at 3:36 PM

i could still see us making an effort to get van buyten in before thursday midnight.

  • 27 scott9 // Jan 28, 2008 at 3:39 PM

i would make a 5m bid for giles barnes i think we would defianatley get him the kid has alot to learn but has bags of potentail he is a future england international

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Toulalan – Basically just a defensive midfielder with great long and short passing, good composure, gattuso like tackling and 3 lungs (great engine). I’d also make him our captain if he came.

  • 29 RAHUL // Jan 28, 2008 at 4:49 PM

i too believe that we need a Dm with passing ability and can also tackle go for sebastian kehl of B.dortmund superb player at 26 just the right age and maybe get a young am who we can develop like mehsut ozil from schalke great talent we will get him for 5mill euros schalke will sell him as he has just rejected a new contract

  • 30 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 4:51 PM

Rahul, as i said the other day, Sebastian Kehl would be good but he nevers plays because he’s always injured.

  • 31 RAHUL // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:15 PM

well tom_toon he has played very much of the bundesliga season this time around had some special therapy surely if we could go for woodgate why not? or frings from bremen

  • 32 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Frings is out for another 3 months or so and has been out 3 months before.

Kehl has played 4 games this season mate, not exactly much!

  • 33 RAHUL // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:43 PM

yeh i understand your concerns but this is first major injury for frings and kehl is much sharper now they even want to offer him a new contract they wouldnt do that if they dont believe he has recovered 100% wat abt simon rolfes of leverkusen next ballck

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:51 PM

Ye i like Rolfes, quite a good goalscorer aswell for a dm.
