Newcastle Lads Having No Luck In Africa

Abdoulaye Faye scored for Senegal after 20 minutes last night, but the defeat against Angola leaves their Nations Cup hopes dim, having now picked up just one point from their first two games in the tournament.

Abdoulaye Faye - scored after 20 minutes against Angola

That’s the same situation as Oba Martins finds his country, Nigeria, in at the moment. It’s more surprising for Nigeria, because they are ranked at the top of the African Nations.

Both our players, Faye and Beye, picked up a caution in the Senegal Angola game. Our other player at the African Cup of Nations is Geremi who scored the first goal in Cameroon’s 5-1 win over Zambia on Saturday night. Cameroon now have 3 points in their first 2 games, having been beaten 4-2 by Egypt in their first game last Tuesday night.

Senegal now need to get all 3 points against South Africa on Thursday night, and hope that Angola and Tunisia do not draw in the other group fixture.  Oba’s country, Nigeria, play tomorrow night, in their final game against Benin, and have to win to get through.

Here are the games Nigeria, Cameroon and Senegal have played, and the 3rd game to play in each group, which will take place this week. Some of them could even be home by the end of the week.

Oba Martins – Nigeria

21Jan: Nigeria 0 Ivory Coast 1
25Jan: Nigeria 0 Mali 0
29Jan: Nigeria v Benin

Geremi – Cameroon

22Jan: Egypt 4 Cameroon 2
26Jan: Cameroon 5 Zambia 1
30Jan: Cameroon v Sudan

Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye – Senegal

23Jan: Tunisia 2 Senegal 2
27Jan: Senegal 1 Angola 3
31Jan: Senegal v South Africa

Comments welcome.

I hope for NUFC’s sake that Nigeria don’t get through.

Living in Nigeria, most people here are gutted by the poor performances. They could win the last match and still go out – at least we would benefit in getting Oba back in the team again!!!

I dont give 2 sh**s about how our respecive african players teams are getting on, I hope they are all knocked out at the group stages so we can get 1/3 of our team back before we get dragged deeper in to a relegation dog fight.

That goes for the england team as well, i hope the italian, whatever his name is ,decides not to pick any of our players so we dont risk loosing them to injury

Great news. Come on Cameroon though!

If Tunisia and Angola make an agreement of drawing the last game then they both go through. If that doesn’t happen then I still see Senegal qualify, cuase they have to play South Africa, the weakest team of the league.

Geremi played well for Cameroon. They will go through.

Nigeria lacks of confidence ( a bit NUFC of Africa ATM). Good players but not getting a result and losing lots of confidence in theirselves.
