One Player At Most This Week – Kevin

9:48 am, Monday, January 28th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

Kevin Keegan, still surprised that Jonathan Woodgate chose not to come to Newcastle United, talked about the remaining days of the transfer window this week.

Kevin Keegan - chance we’ll get no players in at all

He expects at most one player to come in, as he said today:

“There’s an evens chance of us getting one player in this week. To get two in now we’d be swimming the Channel, I think.”

“But you never know, we might surprise ourselves and the last week of the transfer window invariably sees clubs make decisions which make you think: ‘Wow, I never expected that.’”

“We’re only looking at Premier League players. We’re not looking to bring anyone in from abroad unless they were really world-class and established, and invariably they don’t come around in this transfer window.”

“I wouldn’t rule anybody out. We’re looking at every team and I’m sure everybody else is looking at our players as well.”

This will be a little disappointing to Newcastle fans, who were hoping for at least 3 good players coming in during the January transfer window. It’s made worse by the fact we know one very good player has turned us down in favor of moving to London.

But we also know we have some good players in the squad, and we have to be hopeful that Kevin can start getting the very best out of them. There’s still 15 league games remaining this season, enough for us to start climbing the league.

Comments welcome.

I suspect that there may be a lot of spin going on at the moment and KK is trying to stifle the press. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are still 3 to come, with 3 days to go, who knows.

Has Woody signed for Spurs yet?

  • 7 ELFER // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:05 AM

I hope that the one potentially is not absolutely CHIMBONDA.

This would not make sense at all (althought BEYE is back soon I guess). Please let that last target be BENTLEY or SWP…but I guess we will not get him.

To be honest, I did not heard that he really signed and keept dreaming…but I think dream is already over. We can only congratulate RAMOS to bring in our two targets HUTTON and WOODY :-(

But £16,5mio for these 2 is not an imense price and I’m dissapointed we where not able to put this cash also out to get these two.

Very quickly some of the recently ecstatic fans will come to the quick realisation that Mr Keegan is, alas!, NOT going to take as forward-at least not to now seemingly dizzy heights that Sir Bobby took us to.

This is no rocket science at all. As a manager we all know Keegan is not good enough. That fact is not in dispute. So we are left with Ashley’s money and Keegan’s motivation skills to carry us forward.

Ashley in the great scheme of things is not that rich, like Mr Abramavich and co. I doubt he’ll spend a £100 million in one single swoop in one single summer. So without this level of investment would Keegan’s motivation skills alone carry us forward, and the probable answer is NO.

Even firther, we’re already seeing that top class players are reluctant to join us. Woodgate obviously respects Ramos as a manager, and thinks he’ll take Spurs places. Is Keegan really that respected as a manager by top class players???

What NUFC have needed for a long time, including immediately after Sir Bobby was sacked was to appoint a very good continental manager like Liverpool did with Benitez and Tottenham have with Ramos. It may take another few years for the club to realise this but that is the only way up i’m afraid.

In my opinion the appointment of assistant manager is as important as a new player, what we need is an experienced, tactically excellent coach, as i truely dont believe KK is tactically any good, man management yes, motivation yes, but tactics No.

Especially if the reports are anything to go by (taken with a pinch of salt) regarding KKs team preparation/team talk for saturday Pass the ball better than Arsenal…..thats it chaps off you go !

EITHER WE ARE NOT SIGNING PLAYERS OR MAKING BIDS

OR PEOPLE ARE TURNING US DOWN.

    EITHER WAY, SOMETHING NOT RIGHT.

I DONT KNOW WHICH ONE IS BETTER TO HEAR.

ANY OF YOU GOT ANY THOUGHTS ?

DO WE REALLY THINK WE ARE GOING TO SIGN ANYONE.

IAM SICK OF PAPERS TALK I JUST WOULD A PRESS CONFERENCE WOULD BE MADE AND UP COMES 3 PLAYERS AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO ANY UP IN A RELEGATION BATTLE.

OUT OF THE CUP , NEED SOMETHING TO CHEER US UP, I START TO THINK WE ARE LOOKING LIKE A LAUGH STOCK .

PLEASE GOD, GIVE US SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT ….. PLEASE

nah, players are only not sure about joining us this season, because we have very little chance of going up the table. in the summer if we start quick get some great players in, people would then be more happy to join us.

if we play good football, which to be fair we have, then players will also be more confident about joining us.

  • 12 TOONNUTTER // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:21 AM

THINK AND HOPE YOUR RIGHT LEO

  • 13 Martin // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Let’s be realistic here. It took Keegan more than a SEASON to get us playing the style of football that earned us the name entertainers so don’tgo thinking that after two games he’s going to work miracles. This season is a dead loss – get used to it. If we finish mid-table then so be it. We HAVE to look long term. Ashley’s got the money, regardless of black’s comments. This is the bloke that wrote a PERSONAL cheque for 50 million to clear some of the club’s debt! So what makes you think he won’t spend big to bring success to the club?

  • 14 Graeme // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:04 AM

I think Ashley will have no problem in spending £100 million in a window, providing he is getting top quality for his money. He came out and said “the only limitation is imagination”!!!!

This season is a right off, but we have known that for weeks now. All we can do is support the club and KK, make sure we stay away from the relegation battle and see what happens in the summer.

I still wouldnt be suprised if a Berbatov or a Baptista suddenly turns up in a Black and White shirt!!!!!!

    Keep the faith.

Be honest does anyone really rate woodgate at 7 million? he’s too injury prone! A move to newcastle is not a move up right now players would only move to Newcastle right now for the cash and is that the kind of players we really want? Spurs have european football to offer what does Newcastle have? Lets give Keegan the time! In my opinion (being that of a fan and not of a manager whom see’s the team day in day out) we need to sort out midfield! Look at the first half of both the Man Utd and Arsenal game our defense is quite good all credit to Taylor and Carr. We need a holding player in midfield, someone to take charge and lead! Butt is past his best, Duff is not near back to his best! whatever keegan decides to do i feel midfield and an out and out goal scorer (viduka to old too) what about gudjousten?

    lets give KK time

  • 16 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Martin as the saying goes: SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

What makes you think Ashley will spend BIG on players?????

  • 17 NUFCFAN // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:15 AM

milner plus 7 mil for bentley then they get their replacement in the window

  • 18 t-g-w // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Tom from Aus – its actually scary how many of those players are great players in Football Manager!!!! nice to see Milner in there… did the Zog get a mention? i didn’t watch it all the way through.

  • 19 Martin // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:24 AM

You would have to be some kind of idiot to spend 230 million buing a club and then not invest in new players. Show me the money eh!

  • 20 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:26 AM

LOL so you think Mr Ashley having spent £230m on buying the club and clearing will again spend around £100m one summer on players???

    hmmmmmmmmmmm

  • 21 Martin // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Ah I see now. You’re the one throwing the 100 millon figure around but forget it. you can take a horse to water as they say!!!!

  • 22 Smiler // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:34 AM

NUFC FAN are you mad milner for bentlley i think not milner is 1 ov our better players and you want to px him ?? have a think at wot your saying hehe

  • 23 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Without really big money for players from Ashley, we can all forget Keegan succeding at Newcastle then! Keegan is purely a chequebook manager!

  • 24 Obafan // Jan 28, 2008 at 12:50 PM

SMiler – Do you really mean what you say about Milner. One of our best, he is crap. This is why:

    1. doesn’t defend enough
    2. can’t give 2 descent crosses in 1 game
    3. dribbles without danger
    4. no pace
    5. does not have a football brain; he just doesn’t see hjow to play easy. He dribbles are tries to kick the most dangerous or difficult pass. No no no get rid of him. Every time he annoys me very much…

  • 25 scott9 // Jan 28, 2008 at 3:33 PM

i hope we get someone in but i cant see it happening i think its extremely unlikely i think we should get a midfieder i think giles barnes would be a good signing

  • 26 Daniel Petersen // Jan 28, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Of all the players NUFC has been linked to this January I feel Giles Barnes is the only likely candidate. The question I have is, is he good enough? I ask this because I’ve only seen Derby play twice (both the games vs NUFC) and I wasn’t really that impressed. I’m sure I’m missing something.

Also, why is Berbatov even mentioned at all on this board as coming to NUFC? What a fantasy that is. The only reason he would leave Spurs is to go to a team in contention for a major title. Spurs are in the Carling Cup final and doing well in the UEFA cup. So that would leave a team in the CL, in contention to win the league, and possibly the FA cup or equivalent.

And finally, I’m getting really sick of the bipolar fan support. WTF, last week everyone’s going on about the second coming of KK and how great everything is. Now, after a loss to Arsenal and a draw to Bolton it’s all doom and gloom. I know we’re not going to win anything this year. I know we’re not going to bring in any big name talent in January. What we do have is a manager (Unlike BSA) who actually loves the club and is bringing attractive football back. Isn’t that what we all want?

  • 27 hanz-emre // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:13 PM

long live the revolution! KK is starting to rectify many problems & build the team again. So time we shall him. No worry what so ever this season is dead as long as we finish at the middle of table. Next season is what really matters.
