Wise Appointed to Executive Management Role

5:16 pm, Monday, January 28th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

Newcastle United have clarified the position Dennis Wise will take, and it’s not as Director of Football or Assistant Manager, but a new one of an Executive Management role at Newcastle.

Chris Mort – appointing Executive Management Positions at Newcastle

Chris Mort will will be making several of these appointments in the next few weeks at the Newcastle club. Apparently Kevin Keegan knew all about these positions Chris Mort would be making, to help with the efficient running of the club.

Kevin was said to be enthusiastic about the new structure, and this, amongst other things attracted Kevin back to Newcastle, under Chairman Chris Mort and new enthusiastic Owner Mike Ashley.

But this position also has to be an important one, if Mort is willing to pay Wise £1M a year to serve in the position. That is reported to be 4 times the compensation Dennis was making at Leeds United, as their manager.

These positions will not impinge in any way on Kevin Keegan’s position, who continues to be totally responsible for the running of the first team at the club.

Dennis will not be the last one appointed, but it seems as though Dennis will be working with the Newcastle Board of Directors, on how to run the club efficiently, plus some recruitment responsibilities possibly.

Kevin Keegan, when asked about the position today, said the question should be put to Chairman Mort, who is away on business until Wednesday of this week. We would expect a statement to be issued from the club shortly on these new important executive positions. This is what Kevin told Sky Sports:

That’s a question for Chris Mort, the Chairman to answer when he gets back – he’s back on Wednesday.”

“I’ve been concentrating on getting the team ready for Arsenal tomorrow.”

Mr. Oliver, the Manager of Communications at Newcastle United, has told Sky Sports, that Wise’s position will be an executive management appointment.

It seems to us they are like Director of Football positions. but there will be several appointments made. We really need to know how these will work, since this seems to be a totally new structure for the club, that we haven’t seen executed elsewhere.

Comments welcome.

This makes sense to me. :)

It’s nice to learn that he is actually not the first signing of King Kev’s.

Ed what does that mean “Kevin Keegan when asked today said that the question should be put to him, and we would expect a statement to be issued from the club”…..?

I found your site on google blog search and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. Just added your RSS feed to my feed reader. Look forward to reading more from you.

This sounds totally random to me. Can’t wait for an explanation.

  • 6 keegan // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:27 PM

it is clear the only reason why a young manager would leave a club management job to not have a say at his new club

  • 9 keegan // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:33 PM

excutive he is a footballing man not a business man. he will prob be getting paid lots of money for doing fook all just like half our squad

  • 10 Ed Harrison // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Black and White Blood – Kevin was interviewed on Sky Sports and said something like:

“You should ask Chris Mort about that. I’ve been concentrating on the game tomorrow at Arsenal”

That’s almost exactly what he said and it suggested he knew exactly what the position was but it was nothing to do with him – or the playing side of the club.

keegan what crazy decisions has chris mort made?

Why the feck’s sake can’t we be more positive! I’m as baffled as the next bloke as to Wise’s appointment but if KK said he knew about it before he joined then what’s the problem? Wise has said publicly that he’s fed up with the day to day management side of football. He still lives in London and he’s supposed to be looking at developing the scouting and youth side of the club. At what point will that interfere with KK?

  • 15 Kash2 // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:47 PM

Keegan – You make some crazy comments and not constructive at all. One more and i will start using bad language at you again!

I read somewhere we’re going to be bringing Real Madrids International Scout too. He’s English apparently, so I wonder how Wise and the new scout will work together. It must be something to do with a young player policy like Arsenals! I think Gilles Grimandi does a similar role to Wise at Arsenal!

  • 16 ToonKing // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:47 PM

this sounds very interesting buy i need a little bit more info on this new structure.

  • 17 Tooner // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:48 PM

I’m confused as hell why we appointed Wise to any position, the bloke is a total cu**.

  • 18 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:49 PM

Kash 2 – I read that too. Rather have an Ajax scout but ill settle for Real Madrid.

  • 19 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Sheer madness. Something much worse than Fat Freddie Shepherd maybe upon us! Denis Wise????? OMG!!!!

  • 20 keegan // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:50 PM

chris mort signed kadar. and he is in talks with steven carr over a new contract anybody who has seen steven carr play will know he shouldnt get a new contract he should have his contract ripped up and this wise signing there is something not right about it

  • 21 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:54 PM

If Keegan knew so much about it beforehand and he supports the decision, wht couldnt he tell everybody what the position entails?????

  • 22 Black and White Blood // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:55 PM

    Ed – Thanks appreciate update..

Martin – Do you believe this to be the case, if KK’s ok with it so am I. Would be good if this appointment was as head of recruitment. My only concern is KK authority being questioned!

  • 23 Black Caesar // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Gilles Grimandi is very educated actually, up to masters degree level even. It makes sense to appoint him to an executive position, but Denis Wise?????? This would be laughable if it wasnt dead serious…….

  • 24 ToonKing // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:56 PM

keegan–your really starting to piss me off…………….

  • 25 Martin // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Cos if it’s an executive position then it’s Not Keggans JOB to talk about it.

  • 26 Black and White Blood // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:57 PM

@Keegan new contract for Carr, why not Taylor..?

  • 27 keegan // Jan 28, 2008 at 5:57 PM

your the clown who believes every story you read you mug

  • 28 wayne // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:00 PM

does anyone think for one minute that kk would not know of this appointment imean what would be the point

  • 29 Black and White Blood // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:01 PM

    Keegan and Kash2-
Come on lads keep it calm – had enough bad news today!!!

  • 30 Martin // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Black and White Blood – do you really think Keegan would have taken the job if he thought the appointment of Wise would undermine his position? Also if he was unaware of the appointment then Asley and Mort are taking the piss out of him and do you think they would do that? After all the stuff thats been said recently? Black – so you have to have a degree to be an executive?

  • 31 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Fook all this talk i just want a bloody cm, i have nightmres about Butt playing.

  • 32 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Tanio would be welcome so would Smertin, Sidwell. Think of any more cheap cm’s with prem experience?

  • 33 yet_another_indian_toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:11 PM

The pessimism around this appointment astounds me. If KK is being undermined, we will get to know about it in the next 2 weeks. Otherwise, having someone else who can sync up with KK and take some pressure off him is always a good idea. Syncing up and taking pressure off are the keywords here….

Mort will be a fool to appoint someone to keep a check on a manager they recently appointed, they should and do have the common sense that the best way forward is not by shooting oneself in the foot.

We always have praised Mort for most of his decisions/buys/sound-bits. I feel this one will work out well. Might be over tens of thousands of miles away from SJP, but it still strikes me as a sound decision.

  • 34 Mace // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Once again we appoint a lad who we all used to jeer from the touchline, but who give a f**k the footy canna get any worse and at least Wise puts his heart into the job and shows a bit of passion.

  • 35 slayer // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Why do we need this awful man? He`s been a `worky-ticket` both on and off the field for many years. An odious little creep as far as I`m concerned.

  • 36 Black and White Blood // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Martin – Last thing we need is further unrest at the club. If as I said, KK was aware of this before accepting the position of manager, or alternatively he give full approval of this, then yes I can’t foresee any problem. That said, can we really happily assume KK known of this appointment, both you and I know that’s not always the case in football whether it’s commonsense or not. Furthermore, yes I posses a sincere dislike to Denis Wise as an individual. That said, I’m a realist and a true Geordie supporter and therefore support what ever KK feels is appropriate for the club to progress. Although, in my opinion KK did not seem delirious about the appointment – when ask he said ask the Chairman. Obviously I could be misreading such signals….!

  • 37 Kash2 // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:31 PM

@ TOm_Toon – Real Madrid haven’t really been that great in terms of amazing youngsters they’ve blooded. I can’t think of anyone they’ve signed on the cheap when young and brought into first team or sold for a profit!

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Same, thats why i want an Ajax scout, but Real Madrid do bring in good players, whether the fee is big or small.

  • 39 valle // Jan 28, 2008 at 6:37 PM

Let it settle peeps… No reason to see this as bad news just yet. For all i know this might be the new way to be successfull in the planning and signing department.

I can’t see what this idiot would add to the club. Apart from teaching the juniors how to F*CK around.
I hate this guy but, if you look at the top clubs, they’re all full of w*nkers!!!!!!

  • 43 jptom // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:29 PM

Why do a lot of people seem to think they have a right to know the inner workings of a private corporation? If Mike Ashley wants to appoint someone to a position in his organization, who are we to question his decision. If he wants to tell,or not, the general public (fans) the job decription of any employee he will. Mike Ashley did not garner his vast wealth by doing stupid things, and recruiting stupid people! Let us all trust his business instincts to get the job done.

  • 44 nightfall // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:36 PM

perhaps wise was ashley’s first choice as a manager… but the fans probably wouldn’t liked that, so he appointed keegan as a manager, someone fans can’t get mad at..and wise as his boss…

  • 45 nightfall // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:37 PM

it’s just..i’m sure ashley alreday had his man before he bought the club…

  • 46 RAHUL // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:50 PM

have u gone crazy the blog should me made a pessimistic one give the man a chance kingkev is not the person who takes nonsense he has to approve the appointment wise is going to work with mort to bring in youngsters and run the rule over the players reported by scouts as the manager doesnt have enough time to visit all the games but has the final say whether it succeeds or not is a different issue but lets give it a shot very successful in the bundeliga hoeness for bayern, allofs for bremen
etc wats the harm in it the man is trying things give him the support as the existing structure hasnt brought too much success has it

  • 47 craig chisholm // Jan 28, 2008 at 7:51 PM

you people on hear who are already starting to slag keegan off are a bunch of tossers and should go and support the mackens cos we don’t want you at our club anymore, you bunch of moaning, miserable rejects. its people like you that give our supporters a bad name and also bring the atmosphere down – thats if you even go to the games at all. the bloke has been in charge all of two weeks and has played two games – one of which being at the emirates where no other team has ever won either, yes, thats right, it must be time to start slagging him off. idiots that you lot are…… know who you are if you are reading this.

  • 48 paul // Jan 28, 2008 at 8:07 PM

craig chisholm i’m with you mate… Boo Boy’s out. !!!!

Its all very simple. Wise will co-ordinate the Youth development (?) / Scouting network.

Keegan cant be f_vked, and didn’t do it that well the last time round… remember.

Mort has shows the direction with the purchase of three young talents. Wise will be there to identify these new targets and report to the board.

No Coaching role (wise don’t enjoy it)… no interference with KK.

    Boo Boy’s out!!!!!

  • 49 Mitch H // Jan 28, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Nice one mate (Craig, C), these muppets arnt geordies, they are computer geeks. black caesar, tom toon, & the rest of u moaning mugs, should go find another club. We dont want ya. Your not Geordies, so go on, do us all a favour, fookin jog on.

E Morecambe tempted out of semi-retirement to join his old double act at SJP!

Keep the faith KK will do us proud.

It is a weird appointment but all will be well I’m sure.

  • 51 Neil W // Jan 28, 2008 at 9:16 PM

    Chaps, Chaps, Chaps

First of all, lets have less pessimism and give KK and Mort the credit that they know what they are doing.

I think the DW appointment is something that KK and CM have cooked up to build up the scouting and youth development side of NUFC. In the past in comparison to most other premiership clubs it would be fair to say that our Scouting and Youth development programmes have rather lagged behind the rest of the PL, by quite a margin. Now this is being changed. This is a good thing and I think many commentors here are prejudging DW – any of you actually kn ow of his work in a professional capacity? No, thought not. How about we give the Management Team at SJP some credit and stop the incessant moaning and pessismism that is, frankly, an embarrassment.

Speaking of embarrassment, did anyone else hear the Dimebar who phoned in 606 and essentially said ‘KK out’. I cringed throughout – especially when a Gooner had to intervene and state that NUFC had played v.well in the first half and were ‘a good footballing side’. If that guy (the moaning Ma) reads this Blog – please try to learn about football and don’t phone in 606 and embarass the rest of Us with yr whinging and whining.

Neil ‘In a mood with too many of my fellow Mags’ W

  • 52 natsirtmag // Jan 28, 2008 at 9:20 PM

craig chisholm ummmm you might have a short memory but didn’t West Ham win there last season.

Ed plz make this blog something which people have to be members of,having to read though like 8 comments of keegan and kash bitching between themselves is pretty annoying and gives us a worst rep by other fans who stubble upon this great idea. The whole idea of this is an open forum for newcastle fans to discuss how the team’s doing and players they’ll like to see wearing the strips and players they’ld rather see less of.Contributors accept people have opinions most likely DIFFERENT to your own so just get on with but Tom-Toon i think we get it you like Chikhaoui but please stop going on about him

In response to the article would KK have taken the job if he knew that people would be appointed with power equal of greater to him who weren’t his choice.I’m hoping that the next appointment will be an experienced person who’s tactilely sound so can give us attacking but sound football(ideally bobby but alas he’s getting on abit) so Kevin can concentrate on what he does best, coaching and motivating the players to give 110% to the cause.
So what if we don’t buy any1 this January we have a squad which will keep us in the premiership then behind the scenes Kevin and Mort can work on targets so by mid July the squad is sorted and every1 has a full pre season and who knows maybe next year can be yours
but the best thing to do at the moment is to get behind the team though the highs and lows HOWAY THE LADS

  • 53 Dunc // Jan 28, 2008 at 9:36 PM

I nearly p*ssed down my legs when I first heard it, but I thought he would be number 2.
I rate this man alongside Robbie Savage in the “LITTLE TOSSER” stakes.

I really don’t feckin like him but he’s in now and I support whatever the club does. I also think this could be a very shrewd appointment on Morts’ part in relation to Youth development and/ or scouting. It’s not like he knows f*ck all about the game… Is it?

See how I have to reason with myself, cos like me he’s a NOB!!!!!!!

Anyone slagging Keegan should go buy a red and white shirt and start talking funny like that bunch that play in a jumped up tuna can for a ground. I forget the name is it… erm… Slumberland????????

Keegan is not Allardyce and our game looks 100% better now. You can see the players have the freedom to play and not instructions on trench warfare before every game.

  • 54 leeds diehard // Jan 28, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Just to say thank you and the best of luck!!PS please give some consideration to Ken Bates as your director of football…..please and soon !!

  • 55 scotty // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:32 PM

All this back biting with each other isn’t helping with the morale of NUFC. It just gives the tabloids more ammunition to print negative stories.

As much as we are all confused and dissapointed with the lack of signings – we ALL need to show full support to NUFC.

By the end of next season if we have not made any progress then we can maybe start to have doubts – believe me, this should not be hard as we are in a bad way at the moment.

With Faye, Beye & Martins back soon we’ll wonder what all the fuss was about………….

  • 56 scotty // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:34 PM

Leeds diehard – has he not done a good job so far bearing in my mind you were -15 points?

  • 57 Todd // Jan 28, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Bit surprised at the reaction. He’s done well with Leeds this year. They started out w/ a 15 pt deduction, and Wise has them fighting for a promotion spot. I don’t know what kind of executive he’ll be, but give the guy a chance.

  • 58 Ian B // Jan 28, 2008 at 11:06 PM

Some sensible stuff written in the Times about this appointment: apparently one of many backroom appointments we’ll be hearing about soon:

Dennis Wise – general management & scouting (and able to spend more time in London than full-time at Leeds)

Tony Jimenez – new Vice President – general “fixer” and “wheel greaser” for transfers. Well connected – behind Juande Ramos move to Spurs.

Jeff Vetere – Technical Director – scouting & youth development.

No surprise that Keegan isn’t able to comment on these sort of appointments – more approprate for Mort to do so.

It seems that they are starting to provide the standard business practices for private firms with those appointments. I implore to all NUFC supporters to understand that this is a long term view and that this small blip will be well and truly out shone with results over the next 5 years.

    Howay the lads, also :)
