Newcastle seem to be having no luck in the transfer market, as the verbal bid for 19 year-old Giles Barnes that we made yesterday, was turned down today by Derby County.
Giles Barnes – Newcastle bid rejected
There was a hint in what Derby manager Paul Jewell said, that a better bid would be entertained, so we don’t know if Newcastle will go back with an improved offer.
The highly-rated 19-year-old has previously been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, but Jewell revealed Newcastle are the only side who have made a bid for the player.
Paul Jewell said today:
“They (Newcastle) did come up with an offer yesterday, a verbal offer, but it was nowhere near our valuation.”“When I see other players leaving for £4million or £5million what we want for Giles Barnes is not unreasonable.â€
“He is not going to leave here on the cheap because he is a player we would like to keep.†“But if Giles wants to go and play somewhere else, he wants to play in the Premier League, we won’t stand in his way, as long as that is right for the club.”
There’s still time for Newcastle to do something with Barnes, but things are certainly looking to peter out in January. There’s still an opportunity of bringing in Czech 20 year-old midfielder Lubos Kalouda, who we feel would be a good buy for the club.
We are concerned that if we cannot bring players in during January, the same thing could happen this summer as last, and we could be getting 6-7 new players in, some with no Premiership experience. They will then need some time presumably to gel together into a stronger team.
Of course that wasn’t the case with Manchester City and Sven Eriksson this season, who brought in 8 players and nearly all of them have performed admirably for the club.
So maybe it has got something to do with the manager too.
Comments welcome.

Comment #11Haha – when I first read the headline I thought we’d asked Jewell if he wanted to quit Derby to become our vice-Chairman or something.
Wouldn’t bloomin surprise me at present.

Comment #15Surely Barnes would be about potential? In other words, he gets sub appearances and if he gets that much better (which he might well do) THEN he plays in the first team.
2M is crazy though. If someone offered 2M, or even 5M, for Zog – for example – we’d immediately say get outta here!
I’m hoping that we continue adding promising youngsters to the squad.

Comment #16I think 4m would still be a good price for barnes considering his talent and promise he has showed this season. I was very surprised by only offering 2m.

Comment #22I take it that others have seen this? Probably just more speculation though but…
Levante are willing to sell the player for €3 million (£2.22 million) and The Magpies have set up a deal to bring the Brazilian to St James’ Park.
The Spanish side are having financial problems and have decided to cash in on the 28-year-old centre back.
Keegan has not had long to stamp his influence on the squad on Tyneside after his sensational return to the club but he lost out to Tottenham in the race to sign Middlesbrough’s Jonathan Woodgate.
The former Real Zaragoza stopper is good in the air and should help stiffen a Newcastle backline that has looked less than secure recently.
Alvaro is believed to be travelling to England in a bid to discuss personal terms and the move to the North East, which would see him become Keegan’s first major signing since his return to the game.

Comment #24Alvaro must be a scouted player. If he was no good, then I don’t think KK would sign him considering we’ve got loads of CB’s! I was hoping for a midfield signing!

Comment #25I was gettin excited that we were going to get a half decent young 21 year old midfielder in Tissone on the cheap and now we are in to sign a foreign 28 year old centre back from a struggling club…hmmm.. why are they struglling? defence anyone?

Comment #26He was sidelined for nearly 2 seasons because he tried to forge a EU passport! This better not be another Marcelino. I hope he’s good though. I have faith in KK. We could do with a couple of midfield recruits maybe Tissone and Kalouda, I’d take Barnes too!

Comment #31I do not see how us not getting players in the January transfer window will affect our ability to attract players in the summer. Historically it is alwasy harder to get players in January.
I am very impressed with the hiring of Dennis Wise and the other two appointments, to me it shows a commitment to the long term development of the club, and shows that MA and CM get the big picture.
Things are looking up for the Toon!

Comment #33Tom_Toon I’m sorry but i think its time you get real and stop making up stories about these obscure players who nobody’s heard of. I’ve heard of making suggestions but the way you rant on about “Chikhowi” and this Tissone fella, its like youre their bloody agent. I think its highly unlikely we’ll sign these players and if they are that good surely we’d have heard more about them?
Tom_Toon
Jan 29, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Comment #34You can say i make up stories when you see them play, because they are actually pretty good!
‘if they are good surely we’d have heard more about them’…? Are you thick? I guess you heard of Fabregas and a lot of Arsenals players before they signed them? Ye right did you. They are all good and would be considered obscure by you. Think before you type.

Comment #35we paid £5.5 million for jenas, and £8.5 million for viana and this like 5 years ago. surely we can pay around 4-5 mil mark which im sure jewell would accept. I think barnes looks a better player than jenas was at that age and hes proved he can also knick a goal or 2. definately a good buy if we sneak him for 5 mil or so. i personally think if we cant get a centre back in we should go for a right back, and play habib beye in the middle, he looks a top class defender.

Comment #36Im sure Tissone plays for Atlanta in Italy he is about 21/22 and can play center or right midfeild. He is Argentinan but has a second nationality of Italian. Ive heard nothing about him either.
