Jewell Says No To Newcastle

4:09 pm, Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 84 Comments

Newcastle seem to be having no luck in the transfer market, as the verbal bid for 19 year-old Giles Barnes that we made yesterday, was turned down today by Derby County.

giles-barnes-323.jpg

Giles Barnes - Newcastle bid rejected

There was a hint in what Derby manager Paul Jewell said, that a better bid would be entertained, so we don’t know if Newcastle will go back with an improved offer.

The highly-rated 19-year-old has previously been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, but Jewell revealed Newcastle are the only side who have made a bid for the player.

Paul Jewell said today:

“They (Newcastle) did come up with an offer yesterday, a verbal offer, but it was nowhere near our valuation.”“When I see other players leaving for £4million or £5million what we want for Giles Barnes is not unreasonable.”

“He is not going to leave here on the cheap because he is a player we would like to keep.” “But if Giles wants to go and play somewhere else, he wants to play in the Premier League, we won’t stand in his way, as long as that is right for the club.”

There’s still time for Newcastle to do something with Barnes, but things are certainly looking to peter out in January. There’s still an opportunity of bringing in Czech 20 year-old midfielder Lubos Kalouda, who we feel would be a good buy for the club.

We are concerned that if we cannot bring players in during January, the same thing could happen this summer as last, and we could be getting 6-7 new players in, some with no Premiership experience. They will then need some time presumably to gel together into a stronger team.

Of course that wasn’t the case with Manchester City and Sven Eriksson this season, who brought in 8 players and nearly all of them have performed admirably for the club.

So maybe it has got something to do with the manager too.

Comments welcome.

  • 3 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Not to bothered, rather has Tissone for 300k, both similar players.

  • 4 milner fan // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I think the bid should be upped to £4m with extras for appearances.

  • 5 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:21 PM

We know, Ed. Sad, but true.

  • 6 broon ale // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Tom_Toon – where does it say we have bid for Tissone?

  • 7 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:25 PM

    it will probably be raised.

  • 8 Staffsmag // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Face it Jewell you scouse tosser – he will leave in the summer when you get relegated any way !!! Lol

  • 9 Craig F // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:27 PM

I like barnes but i agree with indian toon – i can’t see him be a permanent fixture in the 1st team!

Off topic but i’m moving to Oz for 8 months in March anyone know where i can catch the toon matches while im over there – i’ll be based in Sydney most of the time!

  • 10 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:28 PM

I just heard it on here, im not saying we have bidded for him but if we have 300k is a steal.

  • 11 Chicken // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Haha – when I first read the headline I thought we’d asked Jewell if he wanted to quit Derby to become our vice-Chairman or something.

Wouldn’t bloomin surprise me at present.

  • 12 Dragoner // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:32 PM

Kalouda & Barnes would both be decent buys for us but i doubt we will get either. I think the Tissone deal is nearing conclusion aint it?

  • 13 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Hope so Dragoner but if we get those 3 players then we have 3 of the exact same players!

  • 14 broon ale // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:37 PM

no one has even mentioned tissone other than us lot on this blog! how can it be nearing completion

  • 15 micepie // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Surely Barnes would be about potential? In other words, he gets sub appearances and if he gets that much better (which he might well do) THEN he plays in the first team.
2M is crazy though. If someone offered 2M, or even 5M, for Zog – for example – we’d immediately say get outta here!

I’m hoping that we continue adding promising youngsters to the squad.

  • 16 Tom Cairns // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:40 PM

I think 4m would still be a good price for barnes considering his talent and promise he has showed this season. I was very surprised by only offering 2m.

  • 17 cooldj // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:40 PM

unsure about barnes. 3-4 million he’s worth a shot be he hasn’t looked that good yet-i may be wrong though!

kalouda sounds v.good on skysports though if juve want him then maybe he’ll move there.

    who the hell is tissone?

  • 18 canuck toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:43 PM

    http://www.setantasports.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/01/29/Premier-League-Keegan-set-to-swoop/

  • 20 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:47 PM

    who?

  • 21 John // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:50 PM

just seen it..thats what i thought WHO?

  • 22 micepie // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:51 PM

I take it that others have seen this? Probably just more speculation though but…

Levante are willing to sell the player for €3 million (£2.22 million) and The Magpies have set up a deal to bring the Brazilian to St James’ Park.

The Spanish side are having financial problems and have decided to cash in on the 28-year-old centre back.

Keegan has not had long to stamp his influence on the squad on Tyneside after his sensational return to the club but he lost out to Tottenham in the race to sign Middlesbrough’s Jonathan Woodgate.

The former Real Zaragoza stopper is good in the air and should help stiffen a Newcastle backline that has looked less than secure recently.

Alvaro is believed to be travelling to England in a bid to discuss personal terms and the move to the North East, which would see him become Keegan’s first major signing since his return to the game.

  • 23 Leo* // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:54 PM

its hotting up all of a sudden, we get some new guys in the coaching staff and all of a sudden players are coming again… strange… barnes is a top quality player and would get into the team i think.

  • 24 Kash2 // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:56 PM

Alvaro must be a scouted player. If he was no good, then I don’t think KK would sign him considering we’ve got loads of CB’s! I was hoping for a midfield signing!

  • 25 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:57 PM

I was gettin excited that we were going to get a half decent young 21 year old midfielder in Tissone on the cheap and now we are in to sign a foreign 28 year old centre back from a struggling club…hmmm.. why are they struglling? defence anyone?

  • 26 Kash2 // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:01 PM

He was sidelined for nearly 2 seasons because he tried to forge a EU passport! This better not be another Marcelino. I hope he’s good though. I have faith in KK. We could do with a couple of midfield recruits maybe Tissone and Kalouda, I’d take Barnes too!

  • 27 Chicken // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:02 PM

I do not see how us not getting players in the January transfer window will affect our ability to attract players in the summer. Historically it is alwasy harder to get players in January.

I am very impressed with the hiring of Dennis Wise and the other two appointments, to me it shows a commitment to the long term development of the club, and shows that MA and CM get the big picture.

Things are looking up for the Toon!

    howay the lads!

  • 33 Tom // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:20 PM

Tom_Toon I’m sorry but i think its time you get real and stop making up stories about these obscure players who nobody’s heard of. I’ve heard of making suggestions but the way you rant on about “Chikhowi” and this Tissone fella, its like youre their bloody agent. I think its highly unlikely we’ll sign these players and if they are that good surely we’d have heard more about them?

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:21 PM

You can say i make up stories when you see them play, because they are actually pretty good!

‘if they are good surely we’d have heard more about them’…? Are you thick? I guess you heard of Fabregas and a lot of Arsenals players before they signed them? Ye right did you. They are all good and would be considered obscure by you. Think before you type.

  • 35 Jamie G // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:22 PM

we paid £5.5 million for jenas, and £8.5 million for viana and this like 5 years ago. surely we can pay around 4-5 mil mark which im sure jewell would accept. I think barnes looks a better player than jenas was at that age and hes proved he can also knick a goal or 2. definately a good buy if we sneak him for 5 mil or so. i personally think if we cant get a centre back in we should go for a right back, and play habib beye in the middle, he looks a top class defender.

  • 36 Shaun Dean // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:26 PM

Im sure Tissone plays for Atlanta in Italy he is about 21/22 and can play center or right midfeild. He is Argentinan but has a second nationality of Italian. Ive heard nothing about him either.

  • 37 Power // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:27 PM

    Brasil

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:29 PM

Power, so you think hes not for us? echo your opinion.

  • 39 Tom // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:33 PM

    erm, translation anyone?

  • 40 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:34 PM

He basically said that Alvaro isnt for us, he isnt good enough to wear our shirt and we should be aiming for better.

  • 41 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Tissone is an attacking midfielder, 21 years old, and it’s not a made up story. There are a few reports about it in the england press but the gross of the info is coming from italy. Apparently it’s a deal that is supposed to be payed in parts with the first part being 300.000 and allready deposited in the accounts of Atalanta.

  • 42 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Hes (Tissone) quite like Barnes he is aattcking midfielder in the centre and like to spread to the wings and link the final third, he quite a good player especially for the prices we are talking about!

  • 43 nufctj // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:39 PM

There seems to be two diffeernt mindsets at work on here, the first one, which I shall call the Chelsea mnd set, is that we should go out and spend hundreds of millions of pounds on marquee players. We will srue gain short term success and all will be well for a while.

The second mind set is that we should build a solid foundation of young players, through shrewd signings and our academy, I shall call this the Arsenal approach. This approach takes more time, but in the long run, provides for more consistent results.

I strongly favor the Arsenal approach, and if we really want to be the “big” or “massive” club we all want to be, then this is how we must do it.

So dig in lads, have a few pints, it’s going to take some time.

I would consider Barnes a shrewd signing by the way, let’s get him!

  • 44 RAHUL // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:41 PM

    Brasil.

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:44 PM

    Power can you speak english?

Ive heard hes 28 not 30 and i dont know if we could attract a world class cb to pair up with taylor.

  • 48 Chicken // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:46 PM

nufctj – slight problem with that though. Arsenal haven’t actually won anything with those kids. Chelsea have won a whole sack full of trophies. I know which I’d prefer.

  • 49 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Power, pls don’t mention Ramage, he’s no “futuramente” :D

    Ai, melhorou?

Alvaro already has 30 years, the necessary NUFC of a CB with world-wide quality indiscutivel, for thus gives to equilibrio the Taylor and future the Peter Remage, knows the soccer of it desdeo SPFC, but we go to observe in that goes to happen.

nufctj great post mate. Totally agree with that. The Arsenal approach is the way to go and clearly the way that Mort and Ashley want to take the club. I also think this was a large part in hiring Keegan as he is a great motivator. Back that up with the knowledge of the people we are also getting in and everything looks very good for the future of the club. I just have one question… where are we all going for this pint?

  • 58 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Many sites list him as 28

  • 59 micepie // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Good point about the Chelsea/Arsenal philosophies, nufctj! I live in New York and someone should mention your point to the smug Chelsea-fan presenter on Fox Football Phone In (cable tv over here…a cracking channel, but that show itself can be very irritating). As he mocks both Toon, and also to an extent Liverpool and their recent problems, he should remember that Chelsea could financially implode at some point in the not-very-distant future.

Comparing us to the Arse and Keegan to Wenger is like comparing a bottle of well-aged Bordeaux to a pint of snakebite and black.

  • 62 ToonPipes // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:58 PM

Ok – serious post. I am well pleased with the appointments announced recently at NUFC. At first glance DWise at the toon doesn’t seem to sit right what wiv him being a cockerney and wot not. However, having pondered a little longer, i conclude that hes a right little motivated so and so and he is English (not that i’ve got owt against foreigners at all but i prefer English if possb cos i like England) and he was a manager at a MASSIVE club (we all know it was a matter of years since Leeds were in the CL semi-final tho gawd knows how they did it with DOLearly the Pall Bearer in charge) …. that and this chappy who was at RMadrid along with the deal maker who brought Ramos to England sounds like a good blend of proper football types and some business savvy. Barnes would be great – he is seriously talented and if we can’t get big names then lets get baby giants who will grow into big names … all has my blessing BUT i would have been WELL BUZZED if we could have signed Micah Richards .. i rememeber when Kev used to sign ANYONE when HE WANTED .. mebs in the summer .. x
