Keegan Wants Ameobi To Be Like Adebayor

10:10 am, Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

It looks like Kevin Keegan likes Shola Ameobi, and Shola will get plenty of chances to prove he is made of the right stuff before the end of the season. However, we don’t think he’s anywhere near the class of Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal.

Shola Ameobi – can he get better under Keegan?
Keegan has compared a potential Shola Ameobi to Emmanuel Adebayor, and wonders why Shola cannot be as good as the Arsenal hit man. Keggan said today:

“If you look at Adebayor, what I would say to Shola Ameobi is what I saw of Adebayor a year and a half ago when he first came on to the scene is what I saw of Ameobi when he first came on to the scene.” “That guy has kicked on and Shola has had injuries and other little problems, I guess, but he is 26 now and I don’t think it is too late.”

“Everywhere you go when you see a performance like that, you can say to a player, ‘He is a similar size to you. Has he got more ability than you?” “Well, it would look so at the moment, but truthfully, I think Shola has got a lot of stuff packaged there that hasn’t quite come out properly yet.”

“People might say Alan was dominating when he was here – of course he was; so was (Thierry) Henry, but Adebayor has gone straight in and filled his boots.” “That’s not easy, that’s almost as difficult as filling Alan Shearer’s here.”

It’s a comparison that Kevin is making to try to spur on one of his players, so we know where Kevin is coming from. But most Newcastle fans will agree that’s it’s not a good comparison and Shola hardly has the skill of Emmanuel, who can control a ball instantly with the immense skill he has.

A little different to the ball bouncing off Shola, that we remember so well from that terrible Derby County game at Pride Park.

But Kevin has probably told Shola that when he sees him play next, he wants to be reminded of Adebayor.

Don’t we all. :D

Comments welcome.

o dearo dearo dear. adebayor is one of the best strikers in the prem. ameobi is worse than hesky…

  • 10 broon ale // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:24 AM

the only comparrison beteween shola and adebayor is that they both have heads and legs and everthing in between!

  • 11 cooldj // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:28 AM

to be honest he will try harder than mark the belly viduka…

  • 12 Rob Kirton // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:28 AM

No point in KK slagging off Ameobi. He will be trying to get the most from him (and other players). In the absence of getting new forwards in this window, he realises that with the injury records of Owen / Viduka we may be relying on Shola at some point this season.

Not a good option I must admit. However better than pushing him off the bench and letting him rot in the reserves as Allardyce did.

I would Expect Keegan to be absolutely rutheless in the summer. He is great at getting the most out of players, but thinks nothing of trading once a better option arises.

Anybody else remember what happed to top performers and goalscorers such as Kelly, Cole, Sellars, Fox? – All names on the path to finding the best team which ultimately contained none of them.

I suspect Ameobi will be through the revolving door in the summer…

    Oh dear..

Look if there are any positives for playing Ameobi it’s that he can’t be worse than Viduka or Smith who have done sweet FA. He’s scored some good goals a few years back and I’d be happy for him to get back on that course and see where it takes him, but to compare him to Adebayor – please.

By all means challenge Shola to fight for his place, but don’t compare him to one of the best strikers in the EPL who pretty much turned our FA cup match on his own just by choosing to get himself more involved. As much as I like the lad, Shola is not going to be able to do that..

  • 14 Cam_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Come on Guys for Fvcks sake…

If Shola can net one in two with a dodgy hip under Glen… why not better when fully fit under the King.

Why Sell and Buy if we can get the King to make him come good.

I would expect nothing less than the rest of the season for Shola… See if he can regain that form, and push on further.

I’d have a geordie leading the line any day….!!!!!!

The lad is one of us so lets get behind him… he has a decent manager now. Lets Go Shola…!!!!!!

  • 15 thelongshanks // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Can ameobi not be more like henry?

  • 16 thelongshanks // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:33 AM

alex ferguson has ruined smith,he doesnt know how to play striker anymore.

  • 17 Southside Jordy // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Guy’s slack off will ya………he’s not a bad player and i think he could be a good soild force given the right attention and help!!

Reading some of your comments is like reading Andrew (the C**t) Dunn’s so called sport’s review’s in the News of The World!!!

    Shave off!!!

  • 18 Timbo // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Go on Shola, show us all what you can do…Proper Geordie.

  • 19 wsq // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:42 AM

well, at least it’ll give him some motivation. the guy just doesn’t have adebayor’s brain and cockiness.

  • 20 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:45 AM

i’d like Shola to be like C.Ronaldo……..

  • 21 hanz-emre // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:46 AM

hahaha what a sense of humour from KK. Ameobi is really a waste of space. But lets him play if KK wants to see more of him, i bet he’d soon find out Ameobi is not that good enough for his revolution.

  • 22 eX FILES UNITED // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:49 AM

NOW I see the sense in getting your players filled with confidence BUT Shola “SHIITE” Ameobi will never be SHEARER, abebayor, or Henry…if you remember he said he would be the next Shearer, hahaha…far from it AMEOBI, You can never be as good as SHEARER!!!!!!!!! THERE’S ONLY ONE ALAN SHEARER!!!!!!!!!
    Sell SHOLA AMEOBI NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

I THINK WE SHOULD START WITH OWEN AND CARROLL UP FRONT TONIGHT, and mix it up with over the top balls to Carroll and through balls to Owen….HOWAY THE LADS!!!!!!

  • 23 Toon_Under // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:50 AM

    Well put Cam_Toon.

I’d like to see him get a run ahead of viduka since at least Shola can move. Put him next to owen or martins and keep carroll or smith on the bench for cover.

As much as I want to see a Geordie up front, as long as whoever is there can knock the goals in I’ll be happy. But I’ll give Ameobi one thing – he bleeds black and white and they’re the players you need when your backs are to the wall..

  • 24 joe // Jan 29, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Holy shit, this is a good one. Adebayor is quick, strong, skilful, 2 footed, intelligent and an all round good player. Shola is slow, skill – less, 0 footed, thick as shit and an all round crap player. I can see the resemblance!

  • 25 evildick // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:00 AM

i can only laugh at that headline. nice one!

  • 26 Neil A H // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:24 AM

This looks like another candidate for “Funny Football Quotes.” Just because your similar in size doesn’t mean a thing. Though it could spur Ameobi on to better things.

  • 27 Stami // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:29 AM

i like what he is trying to do here. motivate his player! it is a bit far fetched, but miracles have happened…

  • 28 Whumpie // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:38 AM

For the sake of the mil or so we’d get for wor Shola, I’d far rather wait and see what KK can get out of him. When he was fit his stats were excellent, and there’s no doubting his passion for the club.

Let’s see how he does between now and the summer. Hopefully he and Caroll can both give KK a selection headache when Piedooka gets winded during warm-up again.

  • 29 Davey G // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Rob Kirton, if we have to rely on Shola at some point this season, we are in BIG BIG bother!!
Cam Toon, Many managers have tried and failed to make Shola come good. Why?? Coz he isnt any good.

  • 30 Graeme // Jan 29, 2008 at 11:47 AM

The headline is a joke. I can see and understand the point about filling stroller with confidence; if it works, its a brilliant move by KK, if it doesn’t, then no one can come back and say Stroller wasn’t given every chance to prove himself.

I believe Ameobi has had his chances and will be sold in the summer. However, if he comes through with the goods this time, he should be kept; I just cant see it myself.

  • 31 Shaun Dean // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:33 PM

Ameobi is shite we will never progress with player like him. Why does every manager we have continue to give chances to him?

  • 32 ronaldeano // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:35 PM

He will never be as good as Adebayor,is is a championship player. Wor lass is better than Ameobi, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE KEV, HE IS SHIT, GET RID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
