Newcastle Make Bid For Giles Barnes

11:53 am, Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 50 Comments

Not sure whether this is a made up story but we hope it’s true – the Daily Mirror is reporting today that Newcastle United have made an offer for Derby County’s 19 year-old Giles Barnes.

Giles Barnes - Newcastle have placed bid for player?

It looks like it could be a bit of a bargain too for the Barnet-born youngster, as the deal is said to be for £2M up front plus future add-ons, presumably for first team appearances. If that’s true, it reduces the risk of the signing, and may convince Newcastle that it’s too good of a deal to pass up.

The reports are that the Newcastle scouts are keen on the club bringing in Giles Barnes, who looks a good player for 19 years-old, and can only get better.

Barnes has played 75 times for Derby County since signing for them in 2005 and has scored 10 goals, one of them against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on 23rd December after just 6 minutes. Turns out his uncle is Bobby Barnes, the former West Ham player.

We think Barnes is a very good player and would be an excellent addition to the squad, and he can also get nicely bedded in, if we sign him in January. We certainly hope so, and think a couple of good signings will cheer up Newcastle fans greatly.

Giles Barnes and Lubos Kalouda would be two excellent signings for the club, if we can pull them off. :D

Comments welcome.

  • 12 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:38 PM

Barnes is not a winger, he’s a CM.

  • 13 nufctj // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:53 PM

While we are in contact with Derby, snatch up American International and Brazilian born Austrian-American Benny Feilhaber! also young and lots of potential.

  • 14 thelongshanks // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:56 PM

i really hope we get barnes,he is gonna become an excellent attacking midfielder in the future.loadsa potential.

  • 15 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Found this on a website today about a player we have signed (allegedley) after first bid for Barnes was turned down:

However, Newcastle have had better luck abroad and they are tying up the signing of an Italian teenager from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

United are refusing to say who it is until he has put pen to paper, but they have put £300,000 down as their first payment on the deal.

  • 16 John // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:14 PM

hey James, what site have you seen that on

The story is true but the first bid has benn rejected according to the skysports news channel.

May as well put another bid in. He is a promising young player who could also make a impact for the rest of the season

  • 19 thelongshanks // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:02 PM

    at least 3.5million

  • 20 Micky Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:02 PM

I don’t know anything about Barnes, apart from he plays for Derby. I will now continue this post in the spirit of a lot of people who post on here….

This guy is crap, why are we signing Championship rubbish? We should put in a bid for John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, offer them enough money and they will come.

  • 21 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Barnes is expected to be an England regular in 5 years time. The biggest problem in getting him, is after the Americans took over Derby they don’t need the money for Barnes. So they will hold out for a higher price.

It is claimed we offered £2m up front with the rest in future payments. But that Derby want £5-6m

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Not worth it, dont rate him.

  • 23 Micky Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:07 PM

I’ve just remembered who he is. He is the tw@t that scored against us, isn’t he.
Didn’t rate him much in the game, certainly not worth more than £2-2.5m IMHO.

  • 24 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Not worth it yet no, but maybe worth a lot more in the future.

Look at Bentley, nobody rated him when Blackburn paid £1m for him from Arsenal. Now we cannot buy him for £12 million.

    Same goes for Barnes.

  • 25 ToonRich // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Why are we not trying to hijack Boltons bid for Eidur Gudjonsen(excuse spelling), even getting him in on loan would be good for the rest of the season?
As for Barnes, he’s definately one for the future, so why not bid a little higher and let him develop at SJP…

  • 26 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:30 PM

I agree, James. From what I’ve heard, Derby are holding out for an offer closer to £5 million. Villa, and West Ham had offered closer to £4 million each, but they couldn’t get him then. Our £2 million bid was a joke.

Barnes will be playing alongside City’s Michael Johnson in the heart of the England midfield in 5 years time.

Let’s snap him up. For god’s sake… we paid £6 million for Jose Enrique!

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/01/29/united-bid-for-barnes-vetoed-72703-20407463/

Anyone knows who are the Italian teenager mentioned by the above news ?

  • 28 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:50 PM

No idea. But, he’ll probably be warming the reserves bench for the greater part of next season as well. Our acquisitions this term have been encouraging enough, but Tozer, Kadar, Beheng and their likes will not see first team action in the next 2-3 years. That’s a sad fact.

  • 29 CJ // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Mehazeb- I agree if we paid 6 mil for Enrique surely Barnes would be a great addition to our squad I would prefer Barnes instead of Butt and Smith.

  • 30 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:58 PM

Mehzeb – Enrique is well worth the £6m. Top class defender and he’ll prove it next season.

I’d like us to get Barnes but I agree with Mort’s standpoint – just because we have the money doesn’t mean we should be held to ransom by clubs asking for more than they should.

  • 31 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Derby have been clear on their position from the start. They want £5 million. It’s not like they’ve shifted from their word. They’ve been saying this since last season, when Villa and the Hammers were after Barnes. £5m is their valuation. West Ham even offered £3.8m last window. Didn’t work. We need to put in a bid over £4m, atleast.

  • 32 scott9 // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:19 PM

i would defiantley pay 5m for him he will be worth alot more than that in the future

  • 33 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Agreed, scott9. But someone needs to explain it to smartman Morty.

  • 34 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:22 PM

    Derby will want £6million.

  • 35 Griff // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:23 PM

    PAY IT PAY IT!

Ashleys got the money and we need some CMs before Butt collects his pension!

£5m is cheap. Look at Enrique.

  • 36 M. Stockley // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:24 PM

i agree! good investment, lets not get pipped by spurs again.

  • 37 Mehzeb // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:27 PM

£5m would be enough to persuade Jewell, in my humble opinion ofcourse. :-)

  • 38 M. Stockley // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:29 PM

it would be good to get him in… butt is as much use as a chocolate firegaurd and id rather staple my ears to a horse than play him.

  • 39 jeff // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:45 PM

is barnes any better than nzogbia?could anyone tell me if the boro game is on sky this weekend cheers

  • 40 Dragoner // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Kalouda seems very good from what i have read and just watched on youtube (yes i know ANYONE can look good on youtube) Juventus want him so he cant be that bad, saying he is the next nedved is a lot to ask of a young player so i suggest everyone just disregards that stuff. He is 20 and plays for the czech seniors so i feel he should be a definite buy. Rozehnal should put in a good word for us, and rosicky may tell him to come to the premiership instead of Serie A

  • 41 M. Stockley // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:49 PM

paul jewell annouced they rejected a bid from us yesterday, saying it was well below their valuation, do you think we will make a 2nd bid?

  • 42 RAHUL // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:53 PM

tom_toon agree wit your am and striker but i dont rate kuranyi good work ethic but doesnt score enough goals wat abt guerro from hamburg former bayern munich player also barnes is good get him

  • 43 geordie nick // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:53 PM

i dnt belive how many ppl are complaining he not worth 5mil, wats 5mil in football these days, its abosolutely nothing, especially for someone with so much potential, lets face it he put out midfield to shame last month, and scored and great goal.

  • 44 Tom_Toon // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:02 PM

not sure bou JPG because he isnt what i call a target man, we need some useful height.

  • 45 Geordie Joe // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:04 PM

Giles barnes IS worth much more than 2m. Wot a pointless offer. ‘I’ could have told you they would not even entertain such a low offer. He is quality he dominated the midfield against us at st james park and he has really impressed me in other games. He is going to be a great player in the future. GET HIM!

  • 46 geordie nick // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:10 PM

i wish ppl would stop talkin about all these players from the german bundasliga, broaden your horizons ppl there are much better players in other leagues

  • 47 scotty // Jan 29, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Maybe Mort is just putting in low offers to make it look like we’re trying to sign players? Who knows………….. would pay 5mil for him, he ran us a merry dance at St.James. One for the future!

  • 48 joel // Jan 29, 2008 at 6:16 PM

he is amazing must sign now! in future he will be worth 15-18 million,he is pure quality,i have seen him play.

  • 49 joel // Jan 29, 2008 at 6:18 PM
