Here is the Official statement on Dennis Wise’s appointment at the club plus some additional appointments.

Chris Mort – putting solid structure in place at Newcastle

Here is the official Newcastle statement just released:

Newcastle United announces that Dennis Wise has agreed to join the Club in the role of Executive Director (Football).

Also joining the Club are Tony Jimenez as Vice President (Player Recruitment) and Jeff Vetere, who joins from Real Madrid in the position of Technical Coordinator.

Dennis will assist the Board on football-related matters, including the development of the Club’s Academy and player recruitment. He will report to the Chairman. Tony and Jeff will also assist in player recruitment.

The arrival of these three new recruits follows on from the recent appointment of Kevin Keegan as manager.

Kevin will be responsible for all matters related to the First Team.

Chairman Chris Mort said:

“This is all part of the vision that recently helped us to secure Kevin Keegan’s return to the Club as manager.”

“Two of the conclusions of our strategic review, since acquiring the Club, were that the Club would benefit from having a football person involved at Board level, which it has not had historically, and that further senior resources are needed for recruiting players of the highest quality from this country and further afield.

“Dennis would like to move away from day-to-day football management to a Board role and, with his considerable energy and intelligence, we believe he will do very well in this new position.

“With Kevin able to devote his efforts to developing and running the first team squad, Dennis, Tony and Jeff will each help us to secure success for Newcastle United Football Club at all levels and for the long-term.

One or two further key appointments will follow in the months ahead.”

So a good statement and good words from the Newcastle United chairman. We’re sure some football people around the world will be hoping to get a call from Chris, since the wages Newcastle are paying out for the top men are very high. Dennis is said to be getting £1M/year.

These excellent appointments will soon stop the snide little remarks being made against our club.

Watch out, we’re on our way – there’s no doubt about that.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

real madrid. . .whats wrong with him lol.sounds good to me though, i just hope that keegan still gets to choose the players that he is getting in cos thers no point in him managing a team of players that he hasnt chosen!!!!everythin is sounding a little merrier(off the pitch anyway). C’mon the TOON!!!

IMO I think we have to trust what Chris Mort and Mike Ashley are doing as we have seen they dont suffer fools gladly and from what I have read this is not a knee jerk reaction. They seem to be getting in there own people and have a vision of where they want NUFC to be – top 4 like all of us – but it will take time. Fingers crossed !!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn’t have thought that DW would have the necessary experience to fulfill the role as outlined. He must have done something to convince the Board to take him on though.

I guess only time will tell.

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:16 PM

I think Chris is a real top bloke. He knows what he’s doing and we think Kevin was told about the structure and thought it was great – because his interest is in the first team – and Chris will give him lots of help in recruitment and the youngsters.
Good strong thinking from the Chairman. :D

It’s a good statement and it looks as though things are building up well behind the scenes.

Here is some quotes about Jeff Vetere who is an excellent addition to the Newcastle set up. Almost our best signing in years :

“I’m not surprised he’s ended up at Real Madrid because the guy is a walking encyclopedia of footballing knowledge.

Mention the name of any footballer in the world and he will tell you who he has played for, how many goals he has scored and even what size boots he wears! Good luck to him in the future. “

Time, give them time and patience – KK will instil some belief as we’ll finish mid table again we WE ALL HAVE TO ACCEPT given that it’s year one of a 3-4 year plan.

Does not surprise me that no signing are to be made in January, it was asking too much and they’d only be token signings at that, i.e. signings which do not necessarily fit into the team

  • 8 dougnufc // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:22 PM

We offered 70k a week for Micah Richards got rejected

  • 9 true // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:23 PM

    I really dont know!
BUT i will support the team for ever no matter what.
I think these chaps have a plan so why not let them have a go remember we are debt free so these guys are not here just for a laugh they mean business.
    dont knock support.

These are really astute appointments. It means Keegan can concentrate on using the squad he has once the window closes, and meanwhile these three, along with Mort, can scout many players over the remainder of the season and pick out a selection of players with thorough reports made on them and go for them with Keegan in the summer. This should mean players arriving sooner rather then later, getting more time to gel into the squad before next season starts.

It’s all quite exciting, and we haven’t signed any (senior) players yet.

  • 11 Black Caesar // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Excellent appointments my foot! Dennis Wise director of football??? We have mad men running the asylum.

  • 12 willowtoon // Jan 29, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Look at what the Millwall owner (Theo of Dragons Den) had to say on Wise. First rate, very intellegent and this was a Job he could not turn down.

I believe it is Mort and Ash starting to get the club structure running like Arsenal.

We all beleive Wenger runs the show but he has many people in the background doing the spade work.

This is good for the club long term and leaves Kevin focusing for 3 years on the shop window – first team football which is all he wanted to do in the 90′s.

Only thing left to see know is significant financial backing of the first team in the summer.

Compared to last may and FFS and his board and with 100Mio in the red I am very optomistic for the future of my club

    Come on the TOON………………..

  • 13 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Found this on a website today about a player we have signed (allegedley)

However, Newcastle have had better luck abroad and they are tying up the signing of an Italian teenager from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

United are refusing to say who it is until he has put pen to paper, but they have put £300,000 down as their first payment on the deal.

It is supposed to be someone Jeff Vetere wants to bring to the club.

  • 14 Edd Case // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Anyone seen the latest dross from Anal Oliver – he claims we’ve signed a 19year old from Atalanta – but can’t say who.
I’ve checked their squad, the only 19year old I can see is Ivan Radovanović – and I know nothing about him, other than he is a midfielder of some quality – AND that he’s been signed as a direct result of recommendations from this new chap from Real Madrid.

  • 15 Andreas // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Black C, are you the same person as keegan/keegan1 or just as negative?

  • 16 Nev // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:22 PM

    breaking news on SSN

bid rejected by derby from newcastle for giles barnes

  • 17 Tippo // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Sounds to me like really good appointments. But I am keen to see who is going to be the assistant manager. When I heard about Wise’s move I thought at first that it was to be assistant manager but I was wrong.

  • 18 Stuart // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Yeh I totally agree. Dennis Wise? wtf does he know about recruiting “top class” players. i can imagine him taking potential targets out for pie and mash to help persuade them to sign! f***ks sake, dennis wise! all we need now is lawrie sanchez to be the tactician executive director!

  • 19 Graham // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:24 PM

It sounded dtrange at first – Dennis Wise that is. But having thought about it and the other signings it seems that at last we are looking to run this club in a proffessional manor – something that hasnt been done in my lifetime!

By the way – had a premenition too – 1-1 tonight!

  • 20 Black Caesar // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:33 PM

Andreas i am just as negative im afraid! A lot of people on here have been starved of good news for so long that they ll clutch at anything as good news and improvement for the club.

You’ll have to go a long way to convince me that Dennis Wise (a violent so and so) is director of football material.

  • 21 Chris // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:33 PM

At last! A bit of positivity from most of our fans. I think Ashley has taken a leaf out of Arsenal’s book and I’m quite excited about the future. All you “Wise” knockers, give him a chance for God’s sake. The board want a “football person” as part of the board, so they can bounce ideas off him. Let’s give it a chance, there’s to much negativity amongst our fans and it’s rubbing of on the players. Come on Lads’ get behind your beloved club, and positive thinking only!

  • 22 Hadrian // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Jeff Vetere new’s is the best thing i have heard in ages !!
expect LOADS of youth signings and alot of good first team signings .

  • 23 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Hadrian – see my comment (6)

  • 24 Black Caesar // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:41 PM

This Jeff Vetere guy was apparently at Charlton Atheltic and West Ham before spending a very short time at Real Madrid.

Can anyone show me evidence of his ability to sign excellent youth players ot whatever at any of these clubs?

  • 25 Staffsmag // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Well said Chris – loose the negativity everybody this is chance for a fresh start and we need to get behind the team – hopefully we can start tonight with a good display against the gooners !!! come on the toon !!!!

  • 26 ronaldeano // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Arsenal, thats the key word. Look at the way arsenal do things especialy in the transfer market. There players are young and gifted and i for one had never heard of Fabergas when they signed him, he has turned out to be one of the best central midfielders i have ever seen. If we can do things the way Arsenal do it…. Draw your own conclusions!

  • 27 Black Caesar // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Ronaldeano Aresenal have Wenger and we have …………………. :)

  • 28 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Black Caesar – Jeff is one of the most highly regarded scouts in the world game. Hence why Real Madrid poached him.

He is certainly better at finding players than Fat Sam was!

  • 29 petworth magpie // Jan 29, 2008 at 1:59 PM

AT first I was concerned over this appointment with KK admitting : “I am reluctant to tell you all I know as I really do not know anything.

“I just do not know enough about it so it is pointless me saying something or sitting down and saying to you this wasn’t quite right or that wasn’t quite right. I just want to focus on tonight’s game with Arsenal.”

But Mort made a lot of sense with his statement. I just wish he had told KK first (seems a no brainer) and doesnt cause conflicts over players brought in and game tactics

  • 30 James // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:00 PM

KK knew in advance, he just didnt want to answer the question because it is Mort’s job to do that.

  • 31 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:14 PM

    Anybody else seen this ??

However, United have had better luck abroad and they are tying up the signing of an Italian teenager from Serie A outfit Atalanta.

United are refusing to say who it is until he has put pen to paper, but they have put £300,000 down as their first payment on the deal.

The man behind the signing of is United’s new European scout Jeff Vetere, who has already started work at St James’s Park.

Vetere, who spent 12 years with Charlton Athletic and has also been with West Ham, has keen keeping in touch with the best young players on the continent after a short spell with Real Madrid.

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/newcastle-united-news/2008/01/29/united-bid-for-barnes-vetoed-72703-20407463/

    who can it be ??

  • 32 Black Caesar // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:17 PM

James please dont make it sound like i was a Fat Sam fan cos i wasnt.

  • 33 GM // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:17 PM

I think we have to try and look to the positives these appointments will bring to the club, at least our scouting network will be co-ordinated and managed professionally, not just left to terry mac etc to pop along to some 2nd division games to see what he can see.

Nothing is going to happen now in jan, but if these 3 people and mort work together on young targets around europe then I dont see why we cant find the sort of players wenger seems to dig up. this Jeff guy seems to know spanish and italian football inside and out and doubtless has numerous contacts all over europe, so why could this not work?? i dont see why not, just all the bloody miserable people who see to spread doom n gloom on these blogs.

Black ceasar – I hope I never have to sit next to you on a long journey anywhere, I’d cut my wrists in about 10 minutes!

  • 34 broon ale // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:22 PM

toonking, it’s probably no one! alan oliver wrote that crap!

  • 35 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:24 PM

    i know……………but i’m suckered every time……..can’t help it……….

  • 36 broon ale // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:26 PM

edd case, good detective work on Ivan Radovanović . it would seem alan oliver was making stuff up again though, if he is the only 19 year you could find on atlantas website. he only joined them this month from partizan. I doubt he would leave imediatley after signing. Alan Oliver please make your way down to the tyne bridge and proceed to jump! plonker

  • 37 SGToon // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Hmmmm….don you guys think DW is appointed so that he can take a look at up coming youngsters in the lower divisions? A rough diamond or some sorts….and the other two chaps handle international players……

I’m sure with the time DW has with Leeds and other clubs….he might have noticed a couple of good youngsters?

Just take a look at havant and waterlooville……if they have players that can play against Liverpool and score 2 in anfield….I’m pretty sure there are others….don’t you think???

  • 38 Leo* // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:40 PM

its good to hear that from mort and the club

  • 39 ronaldeano // Jan 29, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Yes black Ceaser, they have Wenger and we have KK, We also have an extreemly intelegent owner and chairman in this new era. It dosent take a genius to know that this club needs a plan for the future and the right people in to put it in place. That is why Mike Ashley is a SELF MADE BILLIONARE. He knows how to make things work, cos if he dident he would not be where he is today. I am cirtain that this is the way forward for NUFC, good times ahead im sure. We need EXTREEMLY OUTSTANDING young talent like Fabregas at this club and with KK and the people who were appointed today can make that happen i will be a very happy man. BTW The Sun newspaper can FOOK OFF, THE TOSSERS!!!! SO CAN ALLAN OLIVER AND HIS PORKY PIES!!!!!

  • 40 CJ // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Broon Ale- I have to agree with you on that. Alan Oliver is at it again looks as though he still on the juice.

  • 41 ToonKing // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:03 PM

ok, new info. the italian guy is Fernando Tissone and he’s not really italian but argentine.
And there are also rumours about him joining us in Italy.
We’ll see what will come from this.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1z3az_udinese-23-atalanta-22-tissone_sport
this is him in action btw

  • 42 Steeley // Jan 29, 2008 at 3:03 PM

I reckon this was part of Keegan’s demands – that he wouldnt have to run the second team (he obviously wasnt interested last time either).

No doubt that this a great move as it allows Keegan to concentrate on the first team, while also having the benefit this time, of some great youth coming through.

Dennis Wise will be the football knowledge that currently doesnt exist at board level. I love the sound of these two other guys coming in to look at player recruitment. I dont feel at all as though these people are coming in to pick who we buy – that is Kev’s choice. These guys are going to be the one’s who pursuade the players that Kev selects that the club is going places!

  • 43 Tom // Jan 29, 2008 at 5:31 PM

ok i like the sound of DW and this Vetere chap, but does anyone know anything about Tony Jimenez? Sounds like a South American drug dealer!

  • 44 lankos // Jan 29, 2008 at 8:01 PM

i think we should just wait and see before getting carried away. Who knows if kk knew about appts. or not (i hope so). If not it may all end in tears. Either way , board meetings should be more interesting.
