Tony Jimenez, newly appointed as Vice President of Player Recruitment at Newcastle, was busy on the telephone to Derby County yesterday, trying to acquire the services of their 19 year-old midfielder Giles Barnes.
Chairman Chris Mort with Jimenez, Wise and Vetere
Jimenez offered £2M to Derby County and Manager Paul Jewell suggested 3M was closer to the value of their player.
There is still more than 24 hours of the January window left, so it may yet happen, as it is believed that Barnes himself is keen on moving to Newcastle United.
His signing would not be a surprise because you have to believe personal terms have already been discussed and would be acceptable to young Barnes. But it is Jimenez’s involvement that illustrates his new role at the club.
Jimenez, 42, has the new title of Vice President of Player Recruitment, and now essentially handles all the transfer dealings at Newcastle United. Jimenez is connected to Newcastle owner Mike Ashley via Paul Kemsley, the former Tottenham director.
We’ll see if Tony can land Barnes before tomorrow night’s deadline at midnight, but surely Barnes is worth £3M. Let’s get him in – because we need one or two new faces to freshen things up at Newcastle, ready for the run-in to the league over the next 4 months.
We’ll need a few wins in the remaining 14 games to finish in a reasonable position in the league. And Barnes will get the necessary experience with the team, so he’s ready to go, for next season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41ronaldeano i know what you mean about the papers, i buy the Mirror and the Journal in the mornings for both point of views one from an out side opinion ie the Mirror and a more biased view in the Journal. The worst paper for this is the Times they have nothing good to say about our club, fans or players it seems NUFC are bullied off the southern based press they have nothing else to write about so think “oh lets slag off NUFC for things like booing their players. Noticed when Chelsea fan were booing their players when we were playing them wasn’t even mentioned. Its only the loss of their company because ppl will stop buying their paper

Comment #45Toon.. the stuff I’ve read have suggested that a bigger offer would be needed. The player is worth more than 2mil however.. and that’s where negotiation starts..
I’d bet my left knacker that they’re still in discussions.

Comment #46Toon1978, as for the cockney press, they should all be strung up and shot with shit. I wonder what they will say if the toon win the league next season? Us geordies should all do a Liverpool and boycot that poxy Sun paper, its a load of shit even when they are not slagging Newcastle off

Comment #47Adam I’m not confident AT ALL at the moment concerning signing they seem to slip by and nothing happens. Newcastle don’t seem to push hard enough to get the player they want. Alvaro i another name linked with us Brazilian defender.

Comment #50Ronaldeano when you call Ashley “rich” you ought to put it in the context of spending his money on a football club. I’m not sure for example how rich Al Fayed is, but he quickly realised that his “peanuts” money wouldnt go a long way in football, so very quickly he recolied back into his shell.
Ashley is rich, no doubt, but at £1.8billion, is he rich enough to spend £100m a summer on players? Beacuse that is what we need at the moment.

Comment #51Personally I read the Telegraph which tends to be fair and reasonably unbiased, when it can be bothered to mention our team. Having said that obviously the southern version is more likely to be interested in southern teams.

Comment #52Keegan’s lack of confidence with signings is a ploy to deflect. I don’t like how so of the negotiation has happened with players.. it goes back to the Dyer incident imo and also with Taylor. But, plenty is happening behind the scenes.

Comment #53There is plenty of money and always has been. But Keegan and Mort said they will only spend it on World Class PLayers or proven youngsters who will benefit the team long term.
No world class players move clubs in Jan no matter what fee is offered. So expect 2 or 3 youngsters by the end of tomorrow and a host of world class players in the summer. The first 11 in August will be miles away from the one that took the field last night. Trust Keegan guys.
When he took over before we had a terrible team and sat at the bottom of Division 2. When he was given time he turned us into the best playing team in the country with all the best players. He just needs time and the summer transfer window to start sorting things.

Comment #57ronadeano – he’s worth £1.8bn – he hasn’t got that sitting in his Northern Rock savings account.
Besides, Sports Direct is pissing its profits away left, right and centre – so I doubt he’s feeling flush at the moment.

Comment #62Chicken i think we need to think positive, we don’t need the doom and gloom with the way things are going at the moment Mike Ashley has the funds available but there is no point in panic buying.

Comment #69we need a right winger.. with the sort of shit milner is serving.. we’ll never create oppurtunities for any of our strikers.. clichy completely nullified milner yesterday. duff.. is shitty as well.. all he does is drag drag turn back pass it to nzogbia. urgh..
is he the player keegan referring to as used to winning! so not used to playing with a losing team. and in need of confidence.

Comment #70I read about your fears of MILNER vs. BARNES…we then would have 2 promising young talents, yes. But the only thing I can say is that they should fight out startposition (miner didn’t look always good and a bit tired, so this maybe works just great in the end). get him!
Get also kalouda (the next Nedved, I’m sure!! And he failed to agree a deal with JUVENTUS, so get him too!)

Comment #78wsq – give Jimmy a break – there’s not many in the PL who could outstrip Gael Clichy in a footrace – and the poor lad must be knackered. he needs a rest – not to mention a break from some of the crap he gets on here.

Comment #79What! Now were’e slagging off Milner! He’s been the one positive of the season. Of course he’s knackered he’s never stopped and he gives 100% Who would you hve in midfield? Geremi? Get real and get off his case. Can you imagine how worse off we would be without him.
