Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton will have his first start since his latest altercation on December 27th. Emre is also back following a three-match ban, with James Milner giving way. Also on the bench is the returning Mark Viduka and Fraser Forster is today’s substitute goalkeeper.

Gareth Southgate is without injured duo Tuncay and Mido, while record signing Afonso Alves is still awaiting a visa, but Emanuel Pogatetz and Lee Cattermole are in the side.

It looks like Emre will play on the right wing in an orthodox 4-4-2 formation.

Teams:

Newcastle United: Given, Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, N’Zogbia, Duff, Barton, Butt, Emre, Owen, Smith.
Subs: Forster, Milner, Ameobi, Edgar, Viduka.

Middlesbrough: Schwarzer, Young, Wheater, Huth, Pogatetz, O’Neil, Rochemback, Cattermole, Arca, Downing, Aliadiere.
Subs: Turnbull, Boateng, Lee, Johnson, Grounds.

Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)

Disappointed. Emre shouldn’t be on the right wing.

  • 2 scott9 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:10 PM

unusual but it could work we will see at least barton n emre are playing anyone heard this its qaulity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM2_ROtD07o&feature=related

  • 3 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Can’t help thinking that N’Zogbia @ LB is simply wasted there, but Duff has started to show some form on the LHS

Scott, you’re getting the words quality and shite mixed up again aren’t you – been drinking?

  • 4 James // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:10 PM

I see we are starting with 9 men again. Butt and Smith will be shocking throughout the game forcing the others to do their work for them.

I look forward to the day when neither of them are on the pitch.

  • 5 ObaFan2 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:11 PM

So Enrique is injured :( , yes it is a shame that Zog will be lb but lets hope he doesn’t have to do too much defending.

  • 6 Ed Harrison // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Would have preferred Emre for Barton, and Milner on right wing – and Viduka for Smith – but we’re think the subs will have a fair part of the game in second half – when we’re 3-0 up.
    Howay the Lads!

  • 7 ObaFan2 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:12 PM

    Oh and Smith starts? lol

  • 8 Kris // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:16 PM

dont understand dont understand change the manager and still cant work out the tactics

  • 9 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:16 PM

I see only Edgar on the bench as a defender – was it really a good idea to get rid of Rozenhal??

Does anyone reckon we might go 3-5-2 at some point today??

Just watching Jamie Redknapp on SS1 and he f*cking hates us doesnt he!! Any chance he gets to have a dig at th club!

Also, Fat Sam looks well bitter about being given the boot! haha – you chump!

  • 10 geordie_jordan // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:17 PM

just look at the smogs side. what a load of poo they have.

  • 11 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Agree with U on Smith and Butt.

  • 41 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Crikey – it’s all hands to their pump isnt it! They frequently have 10 men in their penalty area when we are running at them!!!

  • 42 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:43 PM

    Boro 14% possesion ROFL!!!!

  • 43 Hadrian // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:45 PM

given should have took that , he’s been shit for me lately .

  • 44 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:46 PM

that was a perfectly good goal. but screw the ref. the lads will still come good. though my heart’s always in my mouth when i see boro attacking. our defence is shyte. but we’ll score loads of goals!

  • 45 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:49 PM

Haven’t seen Wobbly eyes yet… perhaps he’s watching from his Laaaaandon office today

  • 46 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:50 PM

I hope Mike Dean dies, fookin’ c*nt.

  • 47 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Milner’s been dropped as he’s struggling to get the ball into the box you idiot commentator.

Steady on TK, we all know match officials are a different breed of “being”, but wishing them dead … ? Come on man

  • 48 ObaFan2 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:52 PM

    Idd idiot commentators again !

  • 49 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:53 PM

    lets get at em!

  • 50 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Bloody hell we can’t even buy a goal at the moment

Anyone know the possession stats, have smoggs had the ball for more than 20%?

  • 51 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 1:56 PM

good to see Smith working hard. he’s very limited talent wise… but at least he’s trying.

  • 52 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Can we stop pissing around in midfield please

  • 53 Hadrian // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:04 PM

    david pleats an arse

  • 54 Magjp // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:05 PM

    Smith, Smith ooh Smith

  • 55 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:06 PM

we’re playing real nervous out there. we really need to get that 1st win out of the way.

  • 56 The black in the blacknwhite // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:07 PM

why the f**k is Smith playin??????

    anyway god bless the internet!!!

iv have renounced my Sky sports membership- those bastards, they hate us anyway- putting all our games on Setanata
    midfield still looks scared

and that backpass is why Carr should be on the bench

    Howay the Lads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 57 Steve_48 // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:08 PM

Hadrian : agree, can’t even report correctly what the crowd is chanting FFS

  • 58 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:09 PM

We REALLY need a midfielder who is happy and confident enough to run at players rather than dither on the ball. I thought Emre was that man, but he’s been poor today as well. How sad it is to think that we almost Diarra as well, who was brilliant against Chelsea yesterday!!

Cacapa hasnt had his greatest game either!

  • 59 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:09 PM

    were denied a penalty now …… :(

  • 60 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:10 PM

And that was a penalty as well!! 2 goals disallowed and now a blatant penalty turned down!

I knew there was a reason why I didnt like Mike Dean!!

  • 61 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:11 PM

PLEASE…………….JUST A BLOODY GOAL WOULD DO AT THE MOMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 62 Tom_Toon // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:12 PM

The only good thing is that wih KK im confident they will come out better in the second half unlike with Fat Sam they come out worse.

  • 63 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Why did Duff let that roll out??

  • 64 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:15 PM

TomToon – you’re right I suppose, however, I think both Arsenal games can counter that claim. I only agree as Arsenal are head and shoulders above 95% of the rest of the Prem. Here’s hoping Boro dont do a Bolton and nullify this game, coz I bet that’s what they’re playing for at the moment – to stop us getting a goal so that the crowd get p!ssed off.

  • 65 cloudstrife // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:16 PM

    COME ON LADS!!

  • 66 Tom_Toon // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Steeley we dominated Arsenal just after the break and should have scored!

  • 67 The black in the blacknwhite // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:17 PM

    who is on the bench

  • 68 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:18 PM

I wish the commentators on games would stop bleeting on about Owen’s lack of match fitness! He’s had long enough to get match fit – the fact is that he’s nowhere near as good as what he was years ago – and he’s never going to be that good again!! I think they just have a fear that once they admit that’s the case, that he will disappear from the England scene!

  • 69 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:19 PM

well HT, some talking needed, we need to up the pace and try to go byt them 1 on 1.

  • 70 Steeley // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:19 PM

TomToon – on goal still wouldnt have turned round a 3 goal deficit though would it?

Well, ANOTHER 45 mins without a goal – I think that’s knocking on 500 minutes without goal for us now! Sob Sob

  • 71 Mike // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Man watching this first half just sums up the fact that our squad is very poor. You can put the greatest strikers in the world on this team and the results would be the same because our midfield has no creativity.

  • 72 ObaFan2 // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:20 PM

    David Pleat’s and ejit !

  • 73 Hadrian // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:21 PM

if only that goal had went in , the lads would have been uplifted by that

  • 74 Hadrian // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:22 PM

didnt shay say owen and martins were the fastest in the squad?

  • 75 Jamie // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:23 PM

Why are we playing long ball?????????????????

Butt and Barton have not had a touch.

Owen is fruitless against Huth and Wheater.

This is just depressing watching it!

  • 76 micepie // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:24 PM

I would make changes at half-time, and not wait!
Edgar on at left-back, NZogbia up at left-wing, Duff on the right and we should sacrifice either Emre or Butt (if Butt, move Emre to the middle).
After 15 minutes if we haven’t scored we should bring Viduka on for Smith.

  • 77 Jamie // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:25 PM

Im sorry but smith and butt need to make way!

Edgar left back, zog left side, emre middle and viduka up with owen

  • 78 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Given spends to much time talking to anal olver and not enough time talking to his defenders

  • 79 Jamie // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Also all Given does is boot it up field to our small strikers against Huth and Wheater. Im sorry but how thick is this Newcastle team.

We need to atleast take Smith off for Viduka at some stage and move Nzogbia into the left side of midfield – Please Kev!!

  • 80 The black in the blacknwhite // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:37 PM

i thoght Nzogbia in defence was a thing of the past- unless enrique is injured, im not happy- Sams advisors must still be a round

why else would smith be still getting in the starting 11

    changes please!!!!!!!!

  • 81 Magjp // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:42 PM

    Where is Milner, Viduka?

  • 82 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 2:50 PM

  • 95 Eve // Feb 3, 2008 at 3:23 PM

There’s no way we deserve to be going home with 1 point it should be 3-0. So not only did we have 2 decent goals disallowed their goal was offside. What a joke.

  • 102 dragoner // Feb 3, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Given needs to get dropped, he makes too many mistakes nowadays, poor passing, twice he should have forced the ball wide for a corner but instead just pushed it out to a boro player, BENCH HIM!
