Too Many Newcastle Players Not Good Enough

7:41 pm, Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 150 Comments

Watching the Newcastle Middlesbrough game this afternoon, you cannot help but think that some of the players we now have at the club, just aren’t good enough.

Kevin Keegan - tough job ahead

Yes, we have a very small squad which will be helped in a while by the many good youngsters we are signing, but some players need to be moved out in the summer, to make way for better players coming in.

We need to augment the squad with 6-7 top class players. It will not be easy for us to attract these types, because it’s getting to be almost a certainty that we will not qualify for Europe, for the second season running. :(

The players we need to move out probably include the following:

Stephen Carr
Claudio Cacapa
Shola Ameobi
Alan Smith
Peter Ramage
David Rozehnal

We didn’t want to put Peter Ramage on the list, because he’s been out all season and his contract runs out in June, and we just cannot see Newcastle renewing it. He will probably be snapped up by Roeder at Norwich City. We see Norwich beat Preston yesterday, with an injury time goal, for a valuable 3 points and are now in 13th position.

Claudio Cacapa is a bit mysterious because he can play very well, but we’re starting to think he may be too much like Rozehnal, and just not quite good enough for the Premier league.

Alan Smith is not quite good enough up front with his heading or goals, not quite good enough in midfield with his tacking and passing, and is not a good winger. Alan may be a very good squad player but nothing more, and we’d rather get our £6M back on him. He’s too ordinary for a Newcastle Keegan side, which we’ll have next season.

The players we need to bring in during the summer include those in the following positions – almost across the board really:

2 central defenders
left back
2 central midfielders
winger (either side)
big striker

So with 6 players out and 7 players in, the ranks will not be swelled too much, but hopefully we’ll sign some youngsters again and surely some of them at the club right now, will be able to force themselves into the first team squad for next season.

We did move out Celestine Babayaro in December but did not replace him in the January transfer window so we really reduced our ranks by two senior players in January, when we include Rozehnal.

What do you think?

Let us know your comments and ideas for the future – it’s more interesting right now looking towards the future. :D

I think u could add Given, Butt, Viduka and Barton to that list….

  • 2 neil // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:52 PM

you can add butt to that list he is garbage!!

  • 3 american pie // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:53 PM

i knew from the beginning…smith doesnt contribute to the team positively. cacapa and carr too old for the league. but i expect wholesale changes in the summer, kk is only observing the players he has now. i hope we dont lose Nzogbia…he is KK’s kind of player.

  • 4 brad // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:55 PM

given are u dumb with out given we would’t be here FACT

  • 5 Graham // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:55 PM

Ed – not good enough for what exactly? We are a mid table team at best at the minute – so most are probably good enough for that.

We all know that if we want to be up with the big lads we have to replace probably 7 or 8 of our regular first team squad (not including the subs).

This cannot be done overnight though – you cannot just go out and buy a new team to immediately finish in the top 4. This is something which is going to have to be done over 3-4 years. First we buy some players who can get us in the top 6/7 and then we move onto the next step and so on.

Keegan has the squad he has – so its no use moaning about it until the summer.

We are improving game on game – slowly but surely – as I said – it’ll take time no matter who’s on the pitch. After the Villa game we have a 2 week break with not too many players away on International duty – we will also have 3 or 4 returning from Africa (although Geremi can stay if he wants). During that fortnight we will gel and improve as a unit and be better for it.

Lets stay positive – we’ve got who we’ve got so lets get behind them and support them 100%

  • 6 lewdavies // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:55 PM

got to add Nicky Butt to that list also. He is kak!

All our problems stem from the middfield. Cannot pass, cannot shoot, cannot supply the forwards, cannot tackle, cannot protect the defenders. The majority of goals conceeded are straight through the centre of middfield. This needs addressing before anything else IMO

  • 7 Bob // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:55 PM

I would say that Rozza and Cacapa have ability (caps for Czech. Rep and Brazil don’t come that easy) – but simply don’t fit into the Premiership.

Steven Carr and Ramage are out of their depth, although Carr has improved somewhat this year on his usual level of performance.

Ameobi should drop down a level – to Roeder’s Norwich for example. He did well under Roder and might be able to fulfill his potential there.

Smith is a decent player but has a very odd set of attributes and dosen’t really fit anywhere.

  • 8 howway geordies // Feb 3, 2008 at 7:58 PM

    I would also add:
    Joey Barton
    Mark Viduka
    to the outgoings list.

  • 9 brad // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:02 PM

but some 1 sed given wtf comom who would we put in goal instead , imagin a newcastle with a strong defence and given in goal be unbreakable

  • 10 Alex // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:02 PM

ed of the players we need to get rid of you forgot nicky butt .Dont forget also the youngsters that are on the fringes of the first team this season LuaLua ,Carroll,Edgar and forster will get a chance under keegan when the time is right also the 3 lads from the ANC could all be in the team against villa .Nigeria lost today so that means Martins will be back sometime this week alongside Beye and Faye and these 3 will make a big diffrence to the squad that keegan has had to choose from so far.Lets not start to get to pesimistic, todays performance was an improvement on the last few games. Lets keep the faith.

  • 11 Sinead // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Just to let ye know, the FAI/Eircom awards are on now, Given’s up for senior player of the year, very tough competition Dunne has been outstanding as well, I can’t remember who else is up for it, Doyle I think. It’s going to be tight. It doesn’t really matter who wins it though, the 3 of them have been amazing. Hopefully Given will get it even though I’d say they wont want to give it to him again for the 3rd year in a row, have to be fair to the other boys. The entire teams there actually. LOL!!

  • 12 Number 70 // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Little harsh on Cacapa alongside taylor recently hes been solid.

Ill agree with the rest but id also add these to the list:

Butt – Great and winning possesion and snuffing out danger, cant pass 5 yards to save his life and long wasteful balls are stupid

Viduka – Can score the odd goal now and again but slow very slow not really a target man.

Duff – Head down and run thats his style doesnt look up so misses runs of other players and also very rarely crosses it first time instead opting to beat his man repeatedly

    Geremi – Offers very little

Owen – Yes i said Owen soon as we get rid of the owen factor we can build a good attacking team, Bottom line despite everyone’s opinion including mine is that he doesnt want to be here.
For a player of his quality how often have you seen him come back and fight to win the ball when he isnt getting service?

    Looking forward to the summer.

  • 13 toon4lyf // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:07 PM

we dunt av da bad a side wen the lads from the african nations cum bac well av a good team we need to sell butt, ameobi, barton and possibly owen also im not sure about milner is ,havent had all our main players under keegan yet soo we wel havta see
buy: shuan wright philips, barzagli and arca maybe crouch 2

  • 14 Nick C // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:08 PM

Brad, Given has been a good keeper for NUFC, however I don’t think he has been the same since Harewood did him at West Ham over a season ago. He has become even more determined never to venture off his line, his kicking and distribution in general is awful, and his shot stopping is not as good as it once was.
Also, I have always felt he could do with being a few inches taller. That’s not his fault, but he just is not imposing enough.
And no, I am not dumb. But thankyou for your concern.

  • 15 brad // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:10 PM

ok fair enough hes movining with time but hes always been good like u sed but just say we did get rid who would step in ,forster ,kul?

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:11 PM

    Where is:

    on that list?

  • 17 Toonarmybarmy // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:11 PM

Number 70 – get rid of owen, what you talking about man, stop talking such utter s***. If you actually watch him, the guy works his socks off, even when we arnt creating anything for him. He is player we need to keep hold of if we are going to get anywhere. Wind your neck back in!

  • 18 Lazy // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Yeah, though I love Given for his loyalty; he doesn’t seem to be the player he once was.

I think we should keep the players we have now, but add:

    1 Goal keeper
    1 Central Midfielder
    1 Right Midfielder
1 Left back (and play Zoggy on the left wing)
    1 Central Defender
    1 Striker

That will give the team a new spine, and strengthen our 3 current weakest areas.

No doubt that will cost a hell of a lot of money though.

  • 19 Gordon // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:14 PM

Duff was our best player today. Valuable asset if he can be kept fit.

Get Butt out – cancel his contract if we have to and give his wages to someone more deserving.

For me this is the best we have atm. Milner is way off form, ditto Viduka.

    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique

    Zog Barton Emre Duff

    Owen Martins

  • 20 brad // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:15 PM

well money mike ashley has 1.9 billion pound lol he will sort us out in the summer just w8 and see guys

  • 21 ToonKing // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:20 PM

are you people daft ??!! Barton and Owen shipped out ???
Joey is our best midfielder by a landslide and Owen is our best player and a world class striker.
If anything we should build our new team around them and Taylor.

  • 22 Nick C // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:24 PM

I dunno Brad. Jaaskeleinan? Good tall keeper, with plenty of Premiership experience. Regarding Ashley. Everyone assumes he will spend big, but he aint so far. Why did we offer 2 mill for Barnes. Either we want him or not. If we did, surely he is worth paying about 4 million for?
Offering low amounts and not budging is the sort of thing Shepherd used to do….

  • 23 Lee // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:25 PM

We certainly lack a attacking midfielder that can run with the ball through the middle, zogs can do that, but is currently used at left back, young lua lua looks quite bright, what ive seen of him. maybe he can grasp his oppertunity,if given a chance.

  • 24 Hammy // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Once/if we secure our Premiership status, I think we should chuck a couple of youngsters in to see if they can cut the Premiership mustard.
Most fans are in agreement who should be got rid of but you have to be realistic and say that most of these guys will have to take a dramatic pay cut if they want regular football, so assuming they are in it for the money they aren’t going anywhere until their current deal expires.
Would love to have known who the 2 or 3 enquiries were for during the transfer window,
I’m fairly sure none of them were on Ed’s wish list above.

  • 25 brad // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:26 PM

well like kk sed there was no 1 worth buying in jan so maybe kk told mk and now they are just waiting for the summer lets hope se spend big

  • 26 Jon // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Taylor??? He doesn’t know how to kick a ball, his passing is awful.

  • 27 JK Muzzi // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Stephen Carr is pure class, what you going on about, butt and barton were awful today and should never play for newcastle again, Man Utd next home match will have 13 players if butt and smith play again.

  • 28 dirk // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

agree with toonking, we need to build the team around taylor barton and owen they are our best players and a team that cn play with them is n awesome team. I think harper shouldget some match time now as given is still the keeper he was but needs to no that there is some competition that can sill beat him to the goals.
w need another rw milner is class but hes playing too much he hasn misse a full match for over a year and needs abreak every once in a while. also another 3 defenders, i dont thnk lb tho as we should use our kids, get them used to the prem we need midfielders desperatly specially central if barton gets off he and emre should b the starters but we need cover.

  • 29 Hammy // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Nick, in the past there have been two prices for footballers, the first price being market value, the second being the price Newcastle United are willing to pay…..Marcellino, Viana, Boumsong, Maric, Robert (begrudgingly) cost over £30 million toon pounds, we’d have been lucky to get £5million back.
Ashley is a business man and I’m fairly sure he won’t be ripped off by crooked agents as the equally crooked Shepherd used to on a regular basis hence our ex £100 million debt.

  • 30 Hammy // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:38 PM

I think we should be kissing Ashley’s ass that we still have a football club to support…….
What’s the interest on a £100 million debt?

    viduka-fat and doesn’t give a flying f*ck.
ameobi- not good enough. never has been and never will be

Butt-a good dm but we can find a dm as good as him who can attack too.
Geremi-where to start?I want him out though he could be a good RB cover for the reserves.

Carr-he’s just got championship written all over him.
    Ramage-see above.

Personally i would keep cacapa-awsome today and is getting to grips with this league though a short term measure.

Smith-works hard and i think as soon as he scores he will come good.

We need a RM a.s.a.p! As for barton i just don’t know. good player but bad person.

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:40 PM

You dot build a team around Owen for two main reasons:

    Hes past his peak
Hes inured a lot so what use is building a team around him when he wont be there alot of the team, NONE, my point exactly.

  • 34 Gordon // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Martins should be fit – left him, Kanu and Utaka out the side!!! Didn’t even put any of them in when they were 2-1 down…

Instead they went for Richard Eromoigbe and Victor Obinna – whoever the hell they are?!

    No wonder the muppets lost!!!

  • 35 Leo* // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:42 PM

  • 36 ripley // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Get Geremi on that list for sure.

The skipper likes Barton, and he’s the only one. Barton is not quality, so far.

    Butt should not start.

Smith should go. Viduka, too. We don’t really know about Owen, do we, with the injuries and the poor service.

Given must stay. Taylor must stay.

Ameobi can go to the Championship, along with Ramage and Carr. Carr must go.

  • 37 Leo* // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:44 PM

my list of in and outs are

    in we need
    1 cb
    1 young right back
    1 experienced left back
2 center midfielders one being along the line of s.appaih
    1 right winger
    and a strong striker

  • 38 Bob // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Gordon – Nigeria are managed by Berti Vogts!

    I don’t think I need to say more…

  • 39 Dazza // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:50 PM

Damn right Hammy, Ashley has been drawing a line in the sand to say that we will not pay overinflated fees and wages to ordinary players, it would be nice to actually make a profit on a player because we have discovered them and made them better. Football is a business and if we want our club to survive then it has to be treat as such.

  • 40 Steve // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:51 PM

Out of the team that we have, the only ones I would keep are Given, Taylor, Milner and Beye. I think Barton can play a bit when he is fully fit and so can Emre so I would probably keep them. The rest I would sell. Martins is too inconsistant. Owen is too small and well past his sell by date and doesnt put in the graft that KK likes up front. Viduka not mobile enough. Ameobi is Ameobi. Butt and Carr are finished. Cacapa makes too many mistakes as does N’Zogbia although KK could make him into a great player. Carrick and Berbetov should be KK’s first 2 signings and 3 top draw defenders

  • 41 the artist formerly known as cooldj // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:51 PM

    here’s my list of outs:

  • 42 adam // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:52 PM

its time now to start looking at the teams around us and thier fixtures so we know what is going to happen. i mean we still got man utd, chelsea and liverpool to play. spurs and villa away. we not gonna get many points based on our useless bunch of muppets.

  • 43 Ian B // Feb 3, 2008 at 8:56 PM

    Butt is a real conundrum.

His distribution was awful at times today. But he breaks up more attacks and makes more saving tackles than anyone else.

Paradoxically, we seemed to have much more movement up front when Viduka came on.

We seemed to just boot the ball up to Smith in the first half who got a few headers in, but it was almost impossible for him against the giant Boro centre-backs. In the second half, and especially when Viduka came on we seemed more able to play the ball in to feet. And Owen seemed to be making more runs and pulling defenders around – rather than just dropping deep or wide.

Barton and Emre were pretty anonymous.

N’Zogbia (still) isn’t a full back. He ofen went missing.

But at least it was a marked improvement on Bolton.

As someone else posted – it will take a few years to rebuild. Even 1st time round, it took 3 seasons before the team was fully flying under Keegan. The big test will be how Ashley spends his billions this summer.

  • 50 Matt Lacey // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

I think the biggest concerns for our team are…

Nicky Butt – never, ever, ever fills me with confidence when I see him play. Fair enough he gets stuck into the challenges and wins the ball, but then more often than not he gives it straight away again, never gets close to creating a decent pass out to the wing or the forwards. We’ve got a perfectly capable DM who can pass and hold onto the ball in Joey Barton, we certainly haven’t seen what he’s capable of yet.

Alan Smith – again, never fills me with confidence. I agree, today, he was winning a lot of balls in the air, but that doesn’t help us at all because when has he ever created even a half chance for us that way this season? We’re better off putting strong passers in midfield to create opportunities for players like Martins and Owen who will find the space and score the goals, rather than playing this long ball crap that the whole team are no good at.

Mark Viduka – I don’t think he can cut it. Nowhere near consistent enough, we’re better off shelling out the money for someone with pace and a good workrate who can bang in the goals.

Cacapa – Obviously a good player but we only seem to see it from time to time. Faye is a much more consistent player and every time I’ve seen him and Steven Taylor partnered together they’ve looked very solid under pressure (e.g. away to Stoke)

Geremi – Very un-noteworthy, is he even worth keeping in the team?

James Milner – I like him, but he’s been so ineffective recently, especially when it comes to crossing. He either needs to start improving or maybe Kevin will have to think about buying a quality right winger in the summer.

A lot of people are saying Michael Owen, but I think he’s playing his part well enough – I know people go on about his lack of goals but he’s scored a few over the last few games – it’s just most of them have been unreasonably disallowed. We definitely need some cover for Enrique though, and N’Zogbia isn’t it, we also need a good CB, an attacking midfielder and probably another striker.

    That’s what I think, anyway.

  • 51 Murvar // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:19 PM

I fail to see what Given has done to upset people; he’s a class act behind a crap defence, not a magician. I don’t have downers on any particular player apart from Martins, who seems to me to have no footballing brain whatsoever, just a remarkable ability to whack a passing ball in the net occasionally – but not occasionally enough.Barton improved as the game went on; Emre is supposed to be creative but I can’t recall him creating anything in open play ( a Gary Speed-type is so necessary for us now)..

  • 52 true // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:20 PM

i feel so depresssed, we cant beet the smoggis at home i know we ahve to give time but i have been waiting 42 years! I truly hope
r ashly splashes the cash i cant stand another year of mid table dross!

  • 53 Dalston // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

The problem is why the players are all playing well before we brought them in but played badly when they are playing for us. Take example of Viduka, his header is not fantastic, but his footwork is exceptional. If we keep pumping high balls to him, for sure he won’t win many. if we can play some ground football with more passing, he would score 15-20 goals a season for sure. I am amazed hearing people saying that we suck because we don’t have tall players, if so, why not sign a few NBA players, then we can be the champion. football is a team sport, nobody makes no mistakes, the key is how everybody covers each other and how to devise the style of play to make use of the resources at hand. certainly we need some more players, but believe me, this team is good enough to challenge europe under a good manager.

I don’t agree with people who want rid of Owen and Viduka. People are waaaaaaaay too critical of these guys. They are PROVEN premiership strikers – they just need the service to score.

  • 56 scott9 // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:36 PM

this is what i would look at doing in the summer
    van buyten 3m
    top qaulity cb 7m
    shorey 5m
    scott brown 9m
    park ji sung 4m
    toulalon 8m
    pandev 11m

    ameobi 3m
    rozenhal 2.5
    butt 2m
    smith 4.5m
    ramage 1m
    steven carr 1m
we need to bring in 7 top qaulity players and i believe the names i have listed are obviously im not saying sign all the players we have listed because i no best i am saying in my opinion those are the qaulity of players we should be looking at and we are gonna need a good 40m to spend to get back into europe

  • 57 Matthew Tom // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:37 PM

Totally agree with Hammy up above (post 21) – get ourselves safe from the drop and then give some starts to the youngsters.

We have two top left wingers but we need a top class right winger. Milner is a very good, very versatile and very young player and I’d never sell him, but he is shouldering a lot of work at the moment. I’d spare him a bit towards the end of this season and give Lua Lua a run in that position. Wingers rarely improve much after the age of about 22, so get them in young is what I say.

With Viduka, Owen and Martins, we have three top top strikers IMO (OK, Viduka is a bit slow but he is still class). Smith and Ameobi not so good and I’d sell them on this summer, and give Carroll and/or Zamblera a go late in the season.

We’ll need to buy a very good left back, obviously, even if Enrique does step up when he comes back from injury. I’d go for Shorey, if only because he’d be taking a step up to come to us and will want to prove himself. Bridge, Riise, etc will just be Butt/Smith type signings.

With Taylor, Cacapa and Faye, we have three decent senior CBs but we will need another, as the two teenagers we brought in will take a few years yet. I so wish we could have got Woodgate back this January. In the summer I would be throwing money at Everton to get Lescott in.

Perhaps the most interesting view expressed above is about Shay Given. Really not been quite as good since his terrible injury at West Ham? It’s an interesting theory. I do think Shay Given is a complete hero, but on the other hand if Arsenal were to come in with an offer of £8-10m for him, it would make it a very difficult call. I guess the answer comes from the question of “how would you feel if he was on the other team” – not happy at that thought at all!

It’s more like too many player’s not good enough and too many who just don’t care we never won today cos Boro wanted it more.

  • 61 Warwick Hunt // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:45 PM

If we get rid of all the players people are stating on here we need to but two too replace them.
We have a small squad as it is, we need to keep the players we have and make them and any new signings fight for their places.
All of this is of no consequence any way, we have the squad we have until the end of the season, even then it wil be difficult to get quality in.
KK wasn’t going to come in and have us beating the arsenal 3-0 and stuffing the smogs within 2 weeks, howay people lets get real here NUFCs problems have run deep for a long time.
The new owner, chairman, manager and directors will get it right, it may take time but get it right they will, no doubts.

  • 62 Rob // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:45 PM

Anyone think Milner may make a good defensive midffielder? runs all day, can takle, strong, passing OK…..can;t cross the ball for a winger.

Watching Butt stroll around, lead in his boots, so slow, leaving our defence exposed, passing hopeless, our defence has little chance as theyget no protection, towards the end of the game today the midfiled was all over the shop.

  • 63 stjames // Feb 3, 2008 at 9:51 PM

Relax a little and read Graham #3. :)

We have to get rid of the Sam-team and get in a Kev-team. But you can’t do it overnight and out of the transfer window.

First item on the agenda is not to get relegated.

  • 64 ChrisL // Feb 3, 2008 at 10:09 PM

Ed, if this is your opinion, stick by it till the summer. Next time we win a game (unbelievable that it could happen with “these players that are not good enough”), don’t start declaring that we’re going to win the league & all is rosy in the garden.

I predicted on this site last week that we’d finish the season with 41 points but survive. Well after today’s IMPROVED performance, we only drew so I reckon we’re down to a final total of 39. Don’t kid yourselves, it’s going to be close to brown trousers time at the end of the season.

  • 65 Todd // Feb 3, 2008 at 10:28 PM

I think Butt needs to go as well. I only hope that Ashley really is going to spend all that money in the summer that people keep saying he will.

I remember reports that KK would have $20 million to spend in the Jan window, and it turns out we didn’t buy anyone.

  • 66 paul // Feb 3, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Barton has never had a good game for us. Given does not command his area, distribrution is attrocious. Carr is crap, Butt is finished. Milner can’t get crosses past 1st man but is a great worker(squad player) .Smith great effort no end result.Martins take his hand off if we get 13m,please leave the clause in! Geremi is the slowest player in the premier league after Viduka. Michael Owen is a money grabbing little s–t that has no love for the club. Ramage is a hartlepool player. Ameobi is the pits. We are ordinary and have too many hangers on, however you can’t make wholesale changes overnight. Kev has been left a poor squad with little pace. Give him time, this will take at least three years to put us in the top 6,and a hell of a lot of dosh.

MMMMMMMMMMM never looked at that angle but I may think you are onto something there.

  • 68 PK-Norway // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:03 PM

We lost 2 points because of some players..
And i think Keegan knows that..but he cant do anything now.

    Players who has to go.

Butt – Even defensive midfielders should have creativity..he definitly havent.
Viduka – He never runs..not good enough.Even in the air he doesnt win.
    Barton- To slow,very slow..
Smith-Cant play midfield, cant play attack..what do we need him for..
    Carr-Not tall and rough enough.
    Cacapa-to old..and lazy.

I think Duff and N’Zogbia played realy well on the left side.
    Milner should have started.
    Emre did well.
    Owen need assistance.

Summer we need to bring in top quality players:
Two Central Defenders. One with experience. And one like Taylor.
Bring in a left back, and a right back for backup.
Two Central Midfielders. One Creative and with teqnique. One Defensive, with great passing skills and winning ball ability.A winger.Who can play on both sides…but we need a right winger.(I miss solano:(…And a top quality striker, like adebayor..bring in one better, than him.Who is Quick and Strong.

I have trust in Keegan and i know that he will bring in players in summer. But to do that,we have to spend money..and dont let clubs like tottenham,Aston Villa and City get them…

  • 69 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

Stop being so positive and be more honest. We were shite in every position today. Players who are consistently shite are Given and Butt. They are both on Mogadon. How many times can these guys give the ball away and still get rave reviews.

PK: Admittedly they played better than they normally do (againsts the beasts FFS). Only Emre has any passion or insight. Make him captain and build the team around him.

  • 72 Sinead // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM

Why is everyone here so negative, why are English Newcastle fans always so negative. Ya, the lack of winning things is a downer but like even Waterford fans (who feel their destined to win things but haven’t for 50 years can laugh about it and enjoy themselves) it’s just misery here. Like yere not going to get relegated, there’s decent enough players there, Keegan’s a good manager, the club has a bright future, Rome wasn’t built in a day, he’s not a miracle worker. It’ll take time.

Like cheer up seriously, atleast ye have a team my favorite team Cork in the best, oldest, field sport in the world, hurling (and Gaelic football) my county is on strike and have 2 days to fix it after months of arguing, we’ve been on strike against the board for months and if it’s not fixed in 2 days we can’t play in the League, which fine, it isn’t the most important comp, but it would relegate us, anyway the League is kinda like the Carling Cup and put our entire season in danger and Cork not playing in the Championship would be like Man U not playing in the Premiership. Hurling is a religion in Cork, imagine if ye constantly won things, imagine the euphoria of Newcastle if ye constantly won things and multiply it by like 100 and you almost come close to how much hurling means to Corkonians. A buzzing city, flying flags, amazing matches where you struggle to find words to explain the beauty of it. Without hurling Cork would die a little bit. Last season was the first time in 5 years we weren’t in the All Ireland final. Without it, well a summer without it in Cork is unthinkable.

So like a said it’s not the end of the world. Stop criticizing the players unnecessarily, this is such an unneeded negative thread. It’s not needed. No player goes out to preform badly. Give them a break.

  • 73 gloryhunter // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:27 PM

@Sinead. We need to agree that we are shite before we can laugh about ourselves. We still think the world owes us. My club is great, my fellow fans are fantastic, but the players in my team are shite. I aint gonna fool myself.

  • 82 Tripp // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:41 PM

moaning about the players is a bit useless. We’re stuck with who we’ve got until the end of the season. Getting players back from ACN will be a boost for the most part but again we’ve fielded a very different team to the one we played on tuesday and to the ones we played in the matches before that. We just need to scrounge points wherever we can, in what ever fashion we have to in order to stay up. I think that we’ll accomplish that. If the teams above us help us out a little (beating the teams below us and losing/drawing to us) here and there then our fate is in our hands. That means that we need to beat Reading, Fulham, Sunderland (all at SJP) and if we can beat Brum too I think we’re in great shape.

  • 83 Tripp // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Milner as a DM is an interesting idea and it would allow us to play Duff and Zogs on the wings with Lua Lua. The real issue isn’t Milners stamina and passing skills but how well he can read the game from a defensive stand point. He’d also have to stop dickin’ with the ball straight away. Perhaps have him learn from Faye and Cacapa how to anticipate things. That’s not a short term solution, unfortunately, unless James has a good eye for it already… and maybe he does…

  • 84 Debs // Feb 3, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Taylor and Given?? In my opinion 2 of our best players!! atleast 2 players that put everything into producing a decent performance. Truely dnt think they deserve any bad press.
I respect all players at Nufc however there are some serious problems.
New faces are needed but i dont think any player will want to join this club especially if they read this page…. not one player goes without a slaggin! Everyone has a right to their own opinon but mayb we should start cutting players a bit of slack.

  • 87 lebanese Magpie // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:24 AM

butt is crap !!!! should be on the list geremi as well

  • 88 Gooderz // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:26 AM

I don’t think we need that much doing, just 2 or 3 really class players added to the spine of the team and we’d be much better.

Ditch a striker or two and get in Elmander, he’s tall and always made a load of assists wherever he plays but has now added goals to his game, and Toulouse also look like missing out on Europe next season.

We should try and pick up someone special to play in the middle like Diego or van der Vaart and a good skillful young player who can also play in that position but can develop out wide for a couple of years, say Barnes or Chikhaoui.

Then a quality defender, short of somehow signing Mertesacker, we should take a chance on Kompany or Lugano.

The only other position that would be good to fill is RB with a younger player, maybe one who can play RM. Nelson of Benfica could do that as he is an attacking fullback and would provide competition for Milner, as well as competing with Beye.

After that it’s just squad players that need bringing in, especially a more experienced LB for a season or two.

  • 89 Dragoner // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:40 AM

I am really finding the blind admiration of Taylor quite annoying nowadays, Cacapa is NO WAY worse than Taylor, if Cacapa is on that list then so should Taylor. also Ed, your list of players to get rid of is about SIX players too short mate.

Add: Butt, Milner, Owen, Duff, Emre, Martins as they are all either CRAP or inconsistent and unreliable players. I am sick of these overrated players we have

  • 90 Dragoner // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:42 AM

PK Norway you build teams around players like Adebayor, Cesc, Anelka, Ronaldo, Berbatov etc…not the likes of Emre, Owen, Zoggy (even though he is my favourite NUFC player), and Taylor. None of these players are good enough to have teams built around them.

  • 91 M. Stockley // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:52 AM

i personally thought smith did a job today… he was winning balls in the air… sadly owen hasnt got the legs anymore… butt as usual awful, cacapa scars me with hispassing, hes not afraid to put his team mates in danger, viduka looked crap when he came on…. on the whole id get rid of- geremi, butt, carr, cacapa, viduka and maybe owen…. i hope in the summer we dare to think positive and big in the transfer market….. if we are bidding forthe likes of berbatov, bentley, carrick it shows our ambition….but atm we are a mid table team with alot of under par players….

  • 92 SteveM // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:25 AM

    NO NO NO NO!

We need more speed less haste -

We don’t need 9 new players with good reputations coming into newcastle – not understanding how to play together – getting their reputations trashed – lossing confidence then getting shipped out – rince and repeat -

meanwhile – at villa park Martin O’Neil has another year to work with almost the same set of players – molding them into a team and vastly improving their position in the table from lower mid table upwards – and all the competion is now doing the same – and we fall further behind -

This club needs a TEAM – i.e. players that have experience of playing together – that know each others strength and play to them – and that know each others weaknesses and cover for them.

Newcastle are not playing as a team – because it ALWAYS takes time – we can’t skip steps and hope to do better – thats life – get used to it –

Viduka, Smith, Butt, Cacapa, Rozza, Duff, Owen etc – All had great reputations as being good players when they signed – just like all the players that people are now hoping we’ll sign – So why are they suddenly useless? – because ALL players need to get used to playing in a team and that needs stability. When you have a stable base – then you can bring in the superstars and they will shine – if not then they will crash. Lets stop repeating the same mistakes again and again and again – Keep the players we’ve got – get them to perform well as a team over the course of this season and probably most of next. – They all had great reputations – lets give them the time to develop as a team

  • 95 Toooooooooooooooooon // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:55 AM

Alan Smith-Useless (half season and he haven’t score?)
Butt-he is USUALLY good ONLY at first half…second half he should get the ball more often
Defence-for me our defence improve eventho we haven’t get a clean sheet for a long time. Steven Taylor had show some maturity in defense, maybe with beye and faye coming back then we chould improve by then.
Attacking-we got lots of the ball by we seldom test the Keeper, that’s the problem! We should test the keeper more often. For me martins will be still my first choice striker (we don’t score for 7 hours when martins is away!). Owen is ok ONLY if we bought a big centre forward player to play with him.
Midfielder- wingers we got good players the likes of milner and duff. It’s the defensive mid that’s the problem. We need someone who can tackle like gattuso or mascherano and able to distribute the ball.

Give it a couple of months and then decide. We need every player to play their part so please don’t fall into the gutter press approach by blaming all the time or a fickle high one minute and low the other!

Afterall no one is going or coming to the club until the summer!

Hard work by the team and the club is needed and the full support of The Toon Army plz.

    Keep the Faith.

  • 98 Toon_Under // Feb 4, 2008 at 2:27 AM

Guys, we have a tiny squad as it is, so I for one don’t want wholesale changes just because a manager is playing someone who is slightly below par – these guys should be our older squad players, and this includes guys like Butt, Smith and Cacapa. they come in handy one rainy days, and if they don’t want to stay then fine.

Ashley will not splash stupid amounts of cash. He knows what it took for him to earn it, which means unlike Freddy he’ll tighten up the purse strings a bit more than days gone by.

We shouldn’t build a side around anyone, but build a team that does have Owen, Taylor and Barton in it. If the rest want to stay, great. If not, there’s the door. We need a top drawer commanding CB next to Taylor because Taylor needs b0ssing about before he’ll improve. Faye, Cacapa aren’t good enough for that, and there is no way like it or not that Taylor is going anywhere soon. We need another CM who runs at people (dare i say like Dyer, but can pass/shoot too). And lastly we need deperately a right winger because Milner is not consistantly good enough yet.

Get them in, and we’ll be looking good. But definately get rid of Geremi please.

  • 99 Singa_toon // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:15 AM

Get rid of all ex-leeds united players, and Nicky Butt. Butt is no gary speed or rob lee. Milner is no solano. Our main problem is our midfield, thank god emre and barton are back… Howay the lads ….

  • 100 Steve // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:48 AM

I do feel a little better about us after the game to be honest. Woeful refereeing. Should have been three points. Should have been 1-0 in the third minute. Birmingham, Fulham, Mackems and the Rovers are all games we need 3 points from. I believe we’re a chance to pick up points against Villa, Everton & Spurs if its our day. I’m not saying these are likely results but I believe we can land the points we need, if we’re passionate enough. Villa losing Agbonlahor was a big plus.

Definately keep Beye, Faye, Cacapa (squad player), Taylor, Enrique, Zoggy, Duff, Barton, Emre, Milner, Owen, Viduka, Martins.

    Offload the rest.

    Definately need 1 cb, 2 cm’s, 1 rm, 1 st.

I support calls to give harper a run in the first team.

  • 101 Tripp // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:48 AM

It’s too bad about Nobby. I wish that he had stayed. Was it Allardyce that scared him away? It really doesn’t matter now. The team needs to come together and start playing. We desperately need to score goals to 1.) get some confidence back 2.) put the other side under pressure and force them to take chances which can lead to more scoring.

  • 102 lee // Feb 4, 2008 at 5:29 AM

Brad. You agree with KK when he said there was no one decent available in January?
Woodgate and Hutton went to Spurs, Diarra went to portsmouth of all places , and bossed the midfield in their last match, by the way! Any or all three would improve our starting eleven no end. As would Defoe. I’m starting to wonder if Old Mike Ashley has got no more loose change in his arse pocket than i have! One things for sure, if he has it he’d better be ready to spend big. We ain’t gonna have the lure of european football next season so he’s gonna have to pay way over the odds if we want any one better than decent.

  • 114 Witters // Feb 4, 2008 at 8:23 AM

I think a few people have already alluded to this but we can’t bring anyone in or get rid of anyone until the end of the season.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, here are a few of my observations:

Given: Needs to work on his kicking. I sh1t myself everytime the ball is passed back to him and I believe this leads to a lack of confidence between him and his defenders yet we seem to play the majority of football at the back. Otherwise a very good keeper.

Carr: Hasn’t played too bad since his return and has stuck to the basics reasonably well.

Taylor & Cacapa: Forming a good partnership but I’d still have Faye as opposed to Cacapa if Butt continues in DM else I’d have Faye (in DM).

LB: We need a proven left back.

Midfield: Not sure we have one as we seem inept at playing through them with too many balls over the midfield to our notorisously tall strikers. They can’t control or pass the ball hence why we by-pass them.

Barton: A typical introduction to life at the Toon what with injury and a dust-up in MacDonalds as opposed to integrating into the team. I still think he’ll come good.

Milner: He has Chris Waddle pace & some of his skills but his final ball sucks! Must work harder on crossing. Keep.

Duff: Has been generally poor (awful against Bolton) since his return. I think Duff has confidence issues. Keep.

Owen: We need to create chances for him. I don’t subscribe to Owen being past it or now lacks pace as we haven’t provided any through balls worth chasing/chances to score. Owen has never been a striker who creates chances for himself.

Martins: Totally & utterley out of form. We need Keegan to weave some magic with this guy.

Generally, I’d keep all players (except Geremi) because without doubt there’s some quality in the squad, add MORE quality to the squad and see who throws their toys then replace them.

  • 116 ELFER // Feb 4, 2008 at 8:53 AM

Calm down. First of all we need 2 key roles filled with 2 new players: talkative leader in defense and a skillfull midfielder. These two should be proofen PL players like DUNNE and CARRICK.

After that our new scouts should provide us with a new “ENTERTAINER”, the new GINOLA on the right wing.

A bit lower priority (but I think we MUST have on every position at least two players in order to break into a international place next year!) is to sign 2 new defenders: 1 leftback 1 rightback and maybe another striker.

we have the ability to beat middlesborough at home. it’s poor organisation and motivation that’s at fault there… if we can’t beat the likes of boro at home who can we beat?

wake me up when it’s over.

    who watched the superbowl?

  • 121 dopaz // Feb 4, 2008 at 9:36 AM

think our best team at moment is
    beye faye taylor enrique

    milner barton emre zog

    owen martins

    thats when everyone is available

  • 122 Ells // Feb 4, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Very harsh on Cacapa. Was by far our best player yesterday.

  • 123 Rob // Feb 4, 2008 at 10:00 AM

do we get martins back now?

  • 124 ChrisL // Feb 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM

I’d like to see Milner given a chance as an attacking midfielder. He can do everything but cross the ball, so why not give him a go in the centre? (obviously we’re then struggling for a right winger, Duff probably the only other one who can play there)

  • 125 steve // Feb 4, 2008 at 10:22 AM

You have to add Butt, Viduka & Geremi to that list, personally I’d keep Cacapa as cover, not sure about Owen, if he had a decent partner he’d probably start knocking the goals in

  • 126 Eric Edwards // Feb 4, 2008 at 10:23 AM

A clearout by all means and sooner the better.
Bye bye Viduka, Smith, Rozenhal, Barton, Smith, Carr, Butt, and, if necessary Owen, Cacapa, Milner and Geremi. Too many over the hill and unimaginative carthorses in the team!
Lets have some daisy cutting perceptive carpet football. We need some resurrected Allchurches, Easthams, Mitchells, Tony Greens,
a Milburn, a Shackleton, and a couple of Moncurs, perhaps an Iley, a big Brennan?

  • 127 Bill F // Feb 4, 2008 at 10:42 AM

The big problem with some of the players is lack of confidence and self belief. ie Cacapa, Milner even Zog, and that comes with a few wins. The MOTD crowd mentioned this and how the fans seemed to be very nervous during the game. It doesn’t take much to transform a losing team into a winning team. With some decent reffing we would have had a win which would have carried us into the next game.

I would bet that some of our much maligned players, Carr, Ameobi, Geremi etc. would look a lot better in a winning team. I think KK can see this and all that is needed is a few good results and bingo they go from zero’s to heroes.

The big problem is getting the kick start everyone keeps banging on about.

  • 128 mark // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Butt is class. get off his back he does a quiet job very well.

Keep Cacapa, Sell the rest, possibly keep Smudge, at least he works hard.

  • 129 Mr T // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:38 PM

Given has lost it, he doesn’t look anywhere near as formiddable as he once was, he should have gotten Huth’s header….or more he would of two seasons ago. Sell Given….. Harper, Forster & Krul will do a good job.

  • 130 paul p // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:41 PM

cacapa, carr, enrique, ramage, butt, emre, geremi, ameobi, viduka, smith,

given. have to as he is simply one of the best keepers in the league and that is proven. harper great back up, then we got krull, forster.

beye, yes keep him because he will be a good squad player. faye, yes good squad player also, taylor, same applies. dont think he has had a good season to be fair. can improve but a dont think he is good enough for the 1st 11,

    midfield – keep

barton. good to have in reserve if not in jail, nogbia. keep him but who do you play, duff or charlie. duff, he is coming into form now and finally showing glimses of what he can do, just needs to do it on a regular basis. milner. not good enough for the first 11/where we want to be, so good back up player.

    up front

owen, can still score goals as it was proved yesterday given the chances, just wish he had more pace about him. martins. fastest striker in the league, but just wish he had a brain and could pass the ball and get his head up. not prolific enough to get in the 1st 11. still young which is an advantage. carroll. one for the future.

so we need right back, 2 left backs, 3 centre halfs, 3 creative midfielders, 2 midfielders, 1 right midfielder, 2/3 centre forwards. plus signing the youngsters as well. all have to be world class though or we are not going to make any progress at all.

  • 131 boater // Feb 4, 2008 at 12:58 PM

I have been clamouring for a new keeper for some time now… milner and taylor are – without the toon rose tinted glasses on – not good enough YET. Cacapa is doing fine – I can’t understand people moaning about him… he makes mistakes ALL DEFENDERS DO but other clubs don’t replace their centre halves every summer like us because of it. Our problem all season has been a lack of creativity from midfield… the focus on defense is annoying to me.

  • 132 gloryhunter // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:00 PM

@Eric Edwards: I’ve got the Delorian gassed up. Now we just need Marty and Doc to move over and let you drive it :)

  • 133 Punk Skunk // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:37 PM

  • 134 Debs // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:42 PM

If Givens name is mentioned on the ‘out’ list again i will seriously start to worry!!
He’s proven he’s one of the best goal keepers in the league… if it wasn’t for him Newcastle would b in a worse position.
Taylor & Smith again 2 players who stand out for their determination and effort! I dont see why they deserve to b kicked out th team, Two goooood players who, with Keegans help could become key players.

  • 135 Punk Skunk // Feb 4, 2008 at 1:43 PM

    Subs: Given-Cacapa-Milner-Edgar

  • 136 Whumpie // Feb 4, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Ed – I think you’re being a bit ‘old-fashioned toon’ on this one. Our problem is that we jump straight to blaming individuals and don’t take the big view enough. We’ve been one of the most active clubs in the transfer market for a decade – and look where it’s got us.

I’d agree that we need better cover for RB – Carr’s been consistently sub-standard for years. Also, we need any cover for LB. And anyone can see that we need a real thinker in midfield, and better crossing.

But why does that always have to be acheived in the transfer market? Can we not teach Milner, at the ripe old age of 21, to cross accurately? Can we not work out how to get Emre working the attack more?

Can we not make Carr taller and quicker? Oh. No. Fair enough on that one.

We have so much that’s new at the club, and once it’s bedded in things will change a lot. I think we’ll all have very different lists of ins and outs by May, and we may cringe at the lack of faith we showed in certain players.

  • 137 Kenneth Bassan // Feb 4, 2008 at 3:13 PM

    Steve Carr
    Peter Ramage
    Nicky Butt
I hate to say this, but James Milner inst good enough. Dont have enough pace, crossing is awful and dont have very good tecnique.
    David Rozenhal
Barton could be good enough, but do we really want such a player that draws negative attention to the club.

  • 138 paul p // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:13 PM

ed. might be worth putting a blog out to see what people’s thoughts are about players coming into the club in the summer. people will have different idea’s etc and will be interesting to see what other fans idea’s are.

  • 139 Michael // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:34 PM

Rather than worry about not qualifying for europe we need to worry about getting relegated. It was so risky not to buy anyone in january when we’ve proven time after time that we can’t create or defend.
I will be happy to make sure we stay up this season then splash the cash in the summer.

The only players I would be disappointed to see leave the club in the summer are Beye and N’zogbia. Everyone else can f**k off.

  • 140 Ausgeordie // Feb 4, 2008 at 4:58 PM

JK Muzzi if you honestly think Carr is “pure class” your smoking the wacky tobaccy. He is slow, gets turned too easily and is woeful in attack. How many times has an attacking run been stopped becasue Carr has driven one fifty metres over the posts.

  • 141 Whumpie // Feb 4, 2008 at 5:03 PM

It was Carr who totally failed to mark Huth for their equaliser. I know Huth is basically a shaven yeti – but Carr didn’t even get his feet off the ground and was on the right side of him. Lummox.

  • 142 Mick // Feb 4, 2008 at 5:53 PM

    Given Given Given Given
Given is one of the worlds best shot stoppers, he is without a doubt in the top 5%. His male modelling evening has sold out!

In the game of football I think that less than 25% (a quarter in old money) of a golakeepers responsibilities are concerned with “shot stopping” the rest of the time they must concentrate on other trivial matters such as distributing the ball. Being in the correct position to support the defence. Helping to organise the defence. Not kicking the ball to a player from the oposition (who is on the edge of the 6 yard box). Not punching the ball to the oposition in range of goal. etc etc.

My quesiton to the Given fans would be:
How many goals (attempts on goal) does Given bring on himself by bad kicking and not commanding his box?
How many opportunaties do we miss out on because of Givens inability to kick the ball up the field to a Newcastle player. (I would also argur that this is the fault of the outfield players as Given always kicks the ball in the same place – a couple of yards either side of the hald way line to his right. Players from the oposing team suss this out after a couple of times, however we never seem to work it out!).

Given is a better shot stopper than Harper, however I think that Harper gives you much better all round goal keeping, and helps the rest of the team – give the lad a chance (a prolonged run in the team) and I am sure that he will be a benefit to the team.

Oh and by the way that goal on Sunday! I am lost for words!

  • 143 svarthvit // Feb 4, 2008 at 7:25 PM

GIVEN OUT!!! he’s done enough here, and need something new!! Also out : CARR, RAMAGE, BUTT, GEREMI, VIDUKA, SMITH, AMEOBI, ROZEHNAL, CACAPA and TERRY MAC!!!!!!! :)

  • 144 leavy // Feb 4, 2008 at 9:45 PM

ive never heard so much bollocks in all my life
given out emre out milner out
jesus christ where would we be without shay in goal
id hate to think a bad few games doesnt make a good keeper and his kickin is shit o well he kicks the ball up field to whom owen butt emre milner we have the smallest attack i have ever seen are u saying harper would pick a better pass to them
emre out he and barton ran our midfield against ‘boro and he was the only player with passion and set up the goal
and milner again last season he was amazing so shut the f!uck up!
the only shit players are carr butt ameobi

  • 145 Whumpie // Feb 5, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Given didn’t have a good game – for all the reasons Mick gave. But he’s still one of the best in the prem. So give him a rest! What’s the point in having two of the best goalies in the league if you don’t use both of ‘em?

Give Harper a couple of starts and get these two competing for the place again.

  • 146 Whumpie // Feb 5, 2008 at 9:37 AM

Oh, and for all you lot shouting for half the squad to be sacked and replaced with £50m deities: may I suggest that you switch your allegiance to whichever team Freddy Shepherd buys? That kind of thinking is exactly why our trophy room is full of carpet and air.

    Ya muppets.

  • 147 svarthvit // Feb 5, 2008 at 2:01 PM

point is; If we can get a couple of freebies in every year to make up the numbers, and maybe hope that 1 of them becomes a hit, then we can sell the rest that doesn’t fit in or whatever, and make some money we can use on real targets.

On the Given out I would say that; NO doubt that he is one of the best goalies in the league, but if its not in his heart anymore, then we ‘ll be better off without him and vice versa…. Just look at Man- U, they sold Van Nistlerooy and won the league..
Arsenal sold Henry and are doin very well without him..
Both are proven world class players and went on to Real Madrid and Barcelona…. But they wear NOT irreplacable!!!!!

  • 148 Mr T // Feb 5, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Seriously, it is possible for Given to get worse. Yes he has done alot of good in the past for Newcastle and has often been the only visible star behind a very foggy back four, but why did Harper get dropped? For nothing! Bring Harper back, he’s looked better all the times he’s played for me (bar portsmouth, but he’d been knocked down a peg or 6 by then for being dropped for playing well). Get rid of Given while he’s still got a value on him. Given feels like he deserves to be in the team and gets out his pram if he’s not…Harper gets on and does his thing cos he’s as loyal a player as you’ll ever get!

Harps, Forster, Krul and that young Swede will more than do for me.

Defence we should keep Beye, Taylor, Ramage and for now at least keep Enrique, the rest are dead wood for me. Midfield is actually ok as it is for my money, Barton and Emre in the middle, Zog, Milner and Duffers on the wings obviously supplies cover… or even Zog in the middle, or as extra cover on the wings Lua Lua has looked canny in the reserves as long as he’s on his correct foot.

Up front we’re desperate, Ameobi isn’t fit to wear the shirt, Owen hasn’t hit form yet, and you have to ask yourself when, if ever. Viduka plays well when it suits him, when he can find the energy; Alan Smith just isn’t good enough if we want to improve. Andy Carroll looks like he could become a handful if he gets the experience, but only time will tell!

If we want our reserves/kids to do well we should bleed some through now while our seasons doing nothing. I was sad to see Pattison go myself, I hope that one comes back to bite Newcastle in the butt. Same with Huntington, I’d much rather have Hunty, Tayls, Ramage and Edgar at the back than Carr, Faye, Rozenhal and Enrique.

Have faith in Keegan & Ashley from here on now though, just be patient!

  • 149 hanzemre // Feb 5, 2008 at 7:38 PM

for this summer, as we target to better our ranking in the league table we must buy high quality players in all departments & try to ship out Ameobi,Butt,Smith,Carr,Viduka for high prices as possible. The rest i’d keep for another season.

  • 150 Matthew // Feb 14, 2008 at 12:45 AM

‘I’d much rather have Hunty, Tayls, Ramage and Edgar at the back’

Hahaha seriously, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever read, no way is Ramage better than Faye!!
