Martins Will Likely Miss Game at Aston Villa

Oba Martins has picked up an ankle injury while training with the Nigeria squad and is now a major doubt for Saturday’s game at Aston Villa.

Oba Martins – he must have just scored – which way is up?

Kevin Keegan told the Newcastle Journal this morning:

“I’ve spoken to Oba and we are a little concerned about him because he has an ankle injury which is causing him some discomfort.”

“We don’t know how bad it is, he has gone over on it in training and we will have to wait until we have had him assessed by our medical staff to find out.”

“He is due back with us on Thursday but, at the moment, I have to say he is a doubt for the trip to Aston Villa which is obviously disappointing for him and us because we haven’t had a chance to look at him yet because he has been away playing for Nigeria.”

That’s a real pity that Oba will not be available for Saturday. It would be nice to see him back, because we just have to start picking up some points, before we find ourselves too far down the table for comfort.

It also looks like Kevin would be at least willing to give a Martins/Owen strike force a try out, to see if it could work. Of course the way Kevin Keegan teams play football makes that a lot easier proposition, since we play a lot more football on the carpet than we did under Big Sam.

But we still need at least one more top striker in the summer, and then we should be OK on the goals trail. But we’d like to see how Oba does under Kevin – we think he’ll become a better player from being coached by someone with the striker experience of Keegan.

What do you think?

i hope we use oba’s pace to its full. he can obviously shoot WHEN hes confident and playing well, as we saw with that goal against bloody tottenham last sesason.

i would have oba over owen anyday, and i wouldnt play them in the same team. oba up front with either viduka or smith, someone who can hold it up. owen can bearly hold up a cup of tea, let alone the ball against premierleague defenders. maybe titus…

Viduka is too greedy and has the workrate of a cripple!

Smith has no imagination or creativity and the ball will always end up going backwards.

Owen and Martins are the best pair we have, they will always look to face up defenders and go forward whenever possible!

kash have you been watching owen lately?! he doesnt run at defenders, hes lost his pace. ok maybe this season i would play oba and owen, but thats coz viduka is lazy and smith has no clue. but definetly not next season.

    bring back shearer!

Adam – I don’t think Owen will be playing for us next season! I really think that Dean Ashton will be pairing up with Martins next season. There will be a massive overhaul of the squad, and I expect alot of players to leave, Owen being one of them!!!!

I dont know i think Owen will be here next season and i think we will see the best of him for the rest of this season and next, if he satys fit then we would have to spend millions to find a replacement as good as Owen ! David Villa?

Keegan played 2 small strikers in Cole and Beardsley the first time round and that didn’t work out too bad did it?

I’d rather get shot of Oba than Owen. Martins isn’t even half the player and, bar a few wonder strikes, has been a major disappointment. On top of that he has to be one of the dumbest footballers I’ve ever seen, and that includes Titus Bramble.

Me 2 Chicken, i hope next year we keep Martins, Owen, Viduka and buy 1 more top quality striker Huntelaar or Ashton more realsitically would be good. Sell Smith and Shola

Yep – I’d go for Ashton. But, as much as it pains me to say it, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we ended up with Crouchy.

Damned Oba a big doubt for Saturday. I hope he and Owen will play together for the rest of the current season. So we don’t have to see that stupid Smith anymore. He doesn’t deserve to wear our black n white shirt. He is a big fool!!!

Don’t compare Owen and Oba, just play them out together and they will bang in the goals!!!!

Team for he rest of the season:
    Beye – Faye – Cacapa – Enrique
    Geremi – Emre – N’Zogbia – Duff
    Owen – Martins

They will make sure we reach the 40 points and get safe. Then lets build (again) a new squad under KK…

    Come on the Toon!!!

    My team for the match:

    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique
    Milner Barton Emre Duff
    Owen Martins

In case of injury, Martins will sit this one out, and Viduka can come in.

Subs: Harper, Carr, Butt, Smith, Carroll

Disloyal players should not be played at all, and hence, N’Zogbia should rot in the reserves.

    No Martins no wins.

I would play NZogbia out of position at the front alongside Martins in a striking role against Man UTD, duff on the left midfield, then Smith, Gerami and Milner then the best available at the back. Martins and Nzogbia link up really well, have a good understanding and are both dangerous in front of goal, the other team will not go forward as much if they are worried about our team scoring. I would have Lua Lua on the bench, Edgar should be left back and if we want a change at the front take Duff off, drop Nzogbia back to his normal position and put either Owen or Viduka on. If we sit around waiting for Viduka to be well and Owen to score we will be out of the premiership. If Nzogbia is any good at the front he may stay or we can ask for more money in the Summer.
