Keegan Wants Four Top Players In The Summer

Kevin Keegan talked on Radio Newcastle for two hors yesterday, and as usual Kevin was as honest as the day is long, and it’s little wonder Newcastle fans just love this man.

Kevin Keegan – on BBC Radio 5 Newcastle for 2 hours last night

Kevin talked about many things during the phone in from the fans, and at one point he did talk about the players he wanted to bring in. This is how he addressed the topic:

“We’d like to fetch in three or four players who can set the other players alight that we’ve already got here,” “I’d like to bring players here that amaze people. Not just talk about being a big club, but show we are by our actions and the players who we bring here.”

“You do that by building up a trust with the people who provide the finance, getting the right players at the right price, that builds up trust and then others will come. It’s easy to get players to a club when it’s flying in the right direction.”

“Why rule things out? People limit themselves, but “we can’t” isn’t an answer. We got people others didn’t think we could last time. Can we do it again? If we can get this club moving in the right direction we’ve certainly got the owner to provide the money to get those players.”

“I want to strengthen all areas of the team. We tried to hijack the Jonathan Woodgate deal to Tottenham and we’re looking for some leaders, because you can’t have enough of them.”

“A defender who can defend, but who is also comfortable with the ball.” We want some creativity, we’ve got some genuine players who can pass the ball and will pass the ball better when they are confident, but in terms of opening teams up, we’re probably a little bit limited. Emre is the only one.”

Well, to be totally accurate in this article, Kevin said he’d like 3-4 top players – we just hope it’s 4 top players – at least.   😀

There was a question that, all things being equal, which one player would you bring to the club. His answer, rather surprisingly, was for Arsenal star Thierry Henry, who is now at Barcelona. But don’t believe any reports that say we are after him in the transfer market. The question was asked – if you were in a fantasy world and could have any one player you fancied, who would it be?

Of course the popular press will probably say we are going to make a move for Henry – which would be nonsense (again).

But one thing we’d love to see right now is Kevin’s list of transfer targets for the summer. That would really provide some insight to the fans on where the club is headed.

But Kevein also has to stabilize the Newcastle ship, because we are still in some danger of bring dragged into a relegation scrap – so first things first. We need to start picking up points in the league – starting tomorrow at Villa Park – and that fixture will not be an easy one for us.

Comments very welcome.

I think it show Kev’s lack of knowledge of the modern game and the fact that he hasn’t really followed football for the last 3 years that he chose an ex-Prem star who is now past his best, over and above anyone else in the world.

Imagine if you asked Tom_Toon that question – his brain would go into meltdown. Then he’d probably answer with someone like Yarislav Kawengamoowayba from FC Slobberdobrovik in the Macedonian 4th division.

Apparently he’s gonna be the next Marradona – don’t ya know 😉

btw – about that poll where 50% of us reckon we’re still a soft touch in the transfer market.

I’m not sure how that can be the case. If it was then surely we would have signed some third rate journeyman (Chimbonda, anyone?) for a ridiculous fee and astronomical wages.

I think we’ve toughened up significantly on that front since MA kicked the fat greedy pig into touch and brought in the lawyer.

I like is comments but it must be said that Thierry Henry at Newcastle now would be a mistake. Henry is past it and Arsene Wenger knew what he was doing when he sold him. At Barcelona he has been terrible and for France the other day he missed a sitter in front of goal that even Ameobi would put in the net. It is worring to hear King Kev say that he would break the bank to sign him. We should be looking at players near the prime not at the end of their careers when they are mere shadows of their former self. Why not sign that promising Russian or other up and coming stars. Many times we have signed big name players with no success. That statement was evidence of Keegan not watching football for 3 years as in that time Thierry Henry´s skill, techinque and abilty seem to have disappeared. We should be much more ambitous as I believe Henry wouldn´t be too hard a capture as he probably knows his days are numbered.

cant you blokes see that keegan is trying to lift the club by having a positive edge on everything he says.most so called fans on this blog are no better than the media.always look for the negative.its no wonder we lack confidence.give the bloke a chance and the good times will roll.

world class players such as leo messi, robinho, iniesta, barzagli, van der vaart, diego, bastian schweinsteiger who have still got their best years left are the type of players he should be going for, then mix them in with potential young players we could sign such as emanuelson, rafeal sobis, arda turan, kalouda, demy de zeeuw, we could see take off. If he is going to talk about bringing in henry, who is now 30 year old and is still world class, although he is the wrong side of his career, then we should be going for world class players. i listened to bits of the talk in last night on the way home from work as I was going to play football and I really think Keegan is really really confident about us, that he will get the world class players, and that we will go places again and be one of the best in europe. you could tell by his voice he had the buzz, excitement, the will, understands it all, i honestly think we will see the start next season. its going to be a promising time after this season is over.

If he wants to set the place alight, he needs to be talking about the Eto’o’s of the world, not a has been!!! If Henry is an example of the calibre of the players he wants to sign, when he was at Arse, then fine.

Papers twist everything don’t they, and make up stories to sell papers, it’s a numbers game and write what they think people want to hear. Just don’t get carried away with anything, just believe when it’s happened.

Summer is along way off though, and we’ve got some tough work to do with the squad we have now. Andy Carroll going out on loan?? I say keep him for when Owen gets injured again, and give the lad a chance!

Did anyone see Geremi’s 40Yd free kick? He’s never come close to doing anything like that for Newcastle. Hope he leaves in the summer for a fee.

Haha, gotta love English press. Useless bastards just like their football team.
One thing is for sure… Keegan wont be bringing in more Smiths and Butts. But more flair players so whoever it is I look forward to it.
Speaking about flair players how bout that bald Egytian bloke Tom Toon, the one who set up the final goal against Ivory Coast? Have you scouted him yet? Hes pacey and passes well and is strong.

Geremi is just another player who never knew his role at Newcastle but is a quality player.
He he strong in the tackle and can pass the ball.
I say he is probably our best DM option and a superb backup right back for when Carr F&%$ off in the summer. Great freekick taker too!

i know this henry talk is crap..but just imagine..having such a legend at the club would do wonders for morale in the dressing room… barca is not the club for him so he might be moving… and if he’d come, we could get the whole french senior and U21 squads to st.james park… 🙂

amm…i’d be ok with that 😀

What’s wrong with KK wanting to bring players like Henry in…He’d still be twice the player of Smith or Viduka for us!! I agree that he’s on the wrong side of 30, but if we could get him on the cheap I think it would be a great coup for the club. I think the dressing room is missing a big personality, like we once had with Shearer…Henry would fit that bill!

    I think we need 5.

    LB – Maxwell
    CDM – Rolfes
    RM – Bentley
    CAM – Kahlenberg
    ST – Marica

Realistic enough, maybe a class cb but with a good dm i dont think we need one too much.

Lads I think the message Keegan was trying to say was that he wants the best players at our club. HE’s showing us that he and Mike Askley are showing a lot off amibition for the future.

I dont think for one second that we will get Henry or even make an approach for him, I think it was more along the lines of reassuring the fans that there’s a bright future ahead for our club.

Roll on the summer and Next season..

JJ… Geremi is definitely not strong in the tackle. he’s pulled out of more tackles this season than i’ve touched mine! an tbh, when he’s got the ball at his feet, he’s looked like an old man. it may just be a confidence thing tho, cos you’re right in sayin he’s a better player than he’s shown us this season, thats for sure.

As KK said “…but in terms of opening teams up, we’re probably a little bit limited. Emre is the only one.” so we need more CMs/CAMs in near future. maybe 2 at least in the summer. As for CF,any big names Henry(at his prime) like is what he’s dreaming to bring in soon. See how ambitious KK is…that’s why i like him very much.

all of mine are 25 or under.

    right lets go through scotts:

    Nasri – no chance
    Kompany – No chance
Ashton – Good chance but injury prone
Toulalon – Good player, possible but improbable.

I name a few obscure players because we cant attract big names so im trying to name the best quality we could get at the moment.

tom toon im not saying were gonna get those players im just saying that keegan wants 4 players who are top class and set other players alight he so thats why i said kompany as he is cb who is comfortable on the ball n nasri who can open up defences however if we were bean sligtly more realistic i would say we should look at bringing in these players of this qaulity.
    van buyten 3m
    top qaulity cb 10m
    toulalon 9m
    scott brown 8m
    ashton 10m
    shorey 5m
    kalouda 4m
    giles barnes 3m
and if nzogbia wants to leave i would be looking at doing a swap with someone like arsenal for someone like alexander song

Considering that Henry scored 12 goals after missing half the season it may be a bit early to write him off as “over the hill”
The fact that he hasn’t hit his pace yet at Spain doesn’t mean much either. New league, new team, new style of play.
He’s class – and we wouldn’t say no.
