Owen Now Motivated To Do Well at Newcastle

10:08 am, Saturday, February 9th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

There’s a good article in the Newcastle Journal this morning by Luke Edwards, on Michael Owen, which also appeared on Luke’s web-site a day or two back, which is worth a read by Newcastle fans.

Michael Owen – after scoring against Stoke City

Basically Luke makes the very valid point that the dropping of Michael Owen by Fabio Capello, can and probably should be a very good thing for Newcastle United.

The only way back into the starting England side now for Michael is to play well for his club, Newcastle United, and score some goals to get the attention of Fabio, who of course knows all about Owen.

Capello has stated that for the England games he will pick the players in his squad who are on form for their clubs. What a concept!

In fact everything we’ve heard from Capello so far tell us he is a no nonsense coach and a winner, who hopefully will be great for England, even if he is Italian. :D

Newcastle fans have never really embraced Michael at Newcastle, partly because he’s been out with injury so much, but Michael seems to be energized by the arrival of Keegan, who seems to understand the position Michael finds himself in. Michael is motivated by Kevin’s arrival, there’s no doubt about that.

Kevin thinks he can make things work again not only for Michael, but for Newcastle. Michael’s also Kevin’s new captain of course, and that may even become long term, since Michael seems delighted to be the captain, and that can only help his game, also. Michael is also very strong mentally, much like Alan Shearer was and is, and the tea leaves suggest he’ll fight his way back into the England starting line-up.

It’s obvious that Kevin wants to build the attack around Owen, who can then score plenty of goals for us, which is what he does best – or at least he did do best. Not sure how Keegan fits Oba Martins into all of this, but we will be able to to get some ideas in the remaining games of this season.

So there are several reasons now why Michael is motivated at Newcastle United:

  • The arrival of Kevin Keegan
  • Michael being made captain of the club
  • Capello dropping Michael from the starting England eleven

What do you think?

Let is know – comments always welcome – just a couple of hours to go before the Villa game, excitement building.

its also good (that he’s dropped) thataway he’ll be less likely to get injured

Why should he only be motivated now to play for Newcastle. Does this mean he has (like many have thought) not given a hoot before now.
If that is Ownes attitude he should not have come to Newcastle in the first place. This is one thing with KK that will not go down with many players, when he says “he will not bring players here to park themselves”. Good attitude and long may it last. Only come to a club if you genuinely want to play for them.

Yes sure MO must keep scoring week in week out for us now to change Fabio Capello’s stance on him. Good for us, England & MO himself.

owen has had no reason to ‘love this club’ – a succession of bad managers, a number of injuries and playing for a totally underperforming team – why would he? – owen is a top class striker, if he stays injury free under the management of keegan he will shine for newcastle and england and will grow to love this club! – a hat-rick today would be a nice start lol

as if a million pounds a minute wasn’t motivation enough!
there’s a lot to be said for performance related pay.

i think he genuinely respects keegan and the passion he has so he is now excited about the club, dont think he really believed BS was gonna get us anywhere and that had an effect on his enthusiasm

owen has looked good recently. and is finally getting a goal in games, i dont mind if he is only doing this to get into the england squad, as long as he does the business for us.

owen’s motivation to regain england place will lead to him leaving.Newcastle are rubbish. He will have to score a hat trick every game to stand chance of being on the winning side ,Michael is good but he isn’t superman.and Newcastle only create one chance per game.
