We had a couple of requests yesterday to conduct a review of the goals we have scored this season. So here is some information on the goals scored so far and who is scoring them for us.
Martins and Owen – Oba has 7 and Michael has 6 total goals this season
We have our goals leagues in the side-bars on the site, but it doesn’t contain how many games the players have made, or the number of substitute appearances so we’ve included this information. The information is interesting.
Here’s the goals each of our players have scored this season, along with the number of starts and sub appearances.
Player Starts Subs PL FAC CC Total Martins 16 7 6 0 1 7 Owen 16 5 4 1 1 6 Viduka 13 7 5 0 0 5 N'Zogbia 28 1 3 0 0 3 Milner 25 4 2 1 0 3 Butt 25 2 2 0 0 2 Cacapa 19 2 1 1 0 2 Emre 8 9 1 0 0 1 Taylor 23 2 1 0 0 1 Beye 16 2 1 0 0 1 Barton 10 3 1 0 0 1 Duff 11 1 0 1 0 1 Starts - player starts Subs - substitute appearances PL – Premier league goals FAC – FA Cup goals CC – Carling Cup goals
We’ve also had 2 own goals scored for us in the league – so in total we’ve only scored 29 goals in our 26 Premier League games so far this season. That’s not very good especially when we’ve conceded a massive 47 goals, which is the 3rd worst goals against record in the Premiership. Only Reading and Derby County having conceded morem, with 53 and 55 respectively.
So much for the defensive reinforcements we brought in this season.
Some observations on the above goal-scoring table:
- Owen and Martins have started the same number of games so are fairly neck and neck – but we need both of them contributing through the end of the season. Much like they did against Wigan on September 1st, when we won 1-0 with Martins putting over a beautiful right wing cross for Michael to head in at the near post, after 87 minutes. A great goal late in the game, and all 3 points. It’s not either or – but how can we use both of them
- Duff just started to play in December but he’s making a good contribution now in terms of games played and we think he’s looked good after being out so long
- Emre hasn’t started enough games (8) and has only made 17 appearances for Newcastle in toal this season. He hasn’t been used enough, hopefully under Keegan he will play a lot more – we need to play him, no wonder we’re not scoring goals. But after Keegan talked about how he was probably the only Newcastle player right now that could carve out chances for Owen, why was he not introduced until the 75th minute on Saturday – we just don’t understand that. Let’s play Emre – he certainly wants to contribute and can
- He’s not on the list but when we check the appearances of our players, we see that Abdoulaye Faye has started just 9 games and made 2 substitute appearances. We know he’s had some injury problems this season, but here is an other player that Keegan just has to start playing. We have to think we would have done much better on Saturday if Faye had been in the team, either at center-back or defensive midfield. Faye would not have allowed Carew to throw his weight around like he did in the second half, if 6’2″ Abdoulaye had been in there
Comments are very welcome.
