Who’s Scoring Newcastle Goals This Season

We had a couple of requests yesterday to conduct a review of the goals we have scored this season. So here is some information on the goals scored so far and who is scoring them for us.

oba-martins-2312.jpgmichael-owen-223.jpg

Martins and Owen – Oba has 7 and Michael has 6 total goals this season

We have our goals leagues in the side-bars on the site, but it doesn’t contain how many games the players have made, or the number of substitute appearances so we’ve included this information. The information is interesting.

Here’s the goals each of our players have scored this season, along with the number of starts and sub appearances.

Player Starts Subs PL FAC CC Total

Martins 16 7 6 0 1 7
Owen 16 5 4 1 1 6
Viduka 13 7 5 0 0 5
N'Zogbia 28 1 3 0 0 3
Milner 25 4 2 1 0 3
Butt 25 2 2 0 0 2
Cacapa 19 2 1 1 0 2
Emre 8 9 1 0 0 1
Taylor 23 2 1 0 0 1
Beye 16 2 1 0 0 1
Barton 10 3 1 0 0 1
Duff 11 1 0 1 0 1

Starts - player starts
Subs - substitute appearances
PL – Premier league goals
FAC – FA Cup goals
CC – Carling Cup goals

We’ve also had 2 own goals scored for us in the league – so in total we’ve only scored 29 goals in our 26 Premier League games so far this season. That’s not very good especially when we’ve conceded a massive 47 goals, which is the 3rd worst goals against record in the Premiership. Only Reading and Derby County having conceded morem, with 53 and 55 respectively.

So much for the defensive reinforcements we brought in this season.

Some observations on the above goal-scoring table:

  • Owen and Martins have started the same number of games so are fairly neck and neck – but we need both of them contributing through the end of the season. Much like they did against Wigan on September 1st, when we won 1-0 with Martins putting over a beautiful right wing cross for Michael to head in at the near post, after 87 minutes. A great goal late in the game, and all 3 points. It’s not either or – but how can we use both of them
  • Duff just started to play in December but he’s making a good contribution now in terms of games played and we think he’s looked good after being out so long
  • Emre hasn’t started enough games (8) and has only made 17 appearances for Newcastle in toal this season. He hasn’t been used enough, hopefully under Keegan he will play a lot more – we need to play him, no wonder we’re not scoring goals. But after Keegan talked about how he was probably the only Newcastle player right now that could carve out chances for Owen, why was he not introduced until the 75th minute on Saturday – we just don’t understand that. Let’s play Emre – he certainly wants to contribute and can
  • He’s not on the list but when we check the appearances of our players, we see that Abdoulaye Faye has started just 9 games and made 2 substitute appearances. We know he’s had some injury problems this season, but here is an other player that Keegan just has to start playing. We have to think we would have done much better on Saturday if Faye had been in the team, either at center-back or defensive midfield. Faye would not have allowed Carew to throw his weight around like he did in the second half, if 6’2″ Abdoulaye had been in there

Comments are very welcome.

Mickey will get us 10-12 goals this season, just you watch. He really looked sharp in the last couple of games.

either way, whoever scored the goals so far, it has to have a line drawn across it.

oba is going to be hungry after coming back from anc and he will have something to prove.

as will owen, he has something to prove to cappello and it seems that he has recently been playing his football with pride and passion….

looks a much better player for it

about the latest poll. i voted for beye because i think he has been brillient, as has faye, when he has played, enrique will turn out to be a great signing

one thing i think that rozehnal has been a good signing because he is making us a profit… its not often we do that on a player… that is if we sell him. i do believe he could come back and play good in defence for us in the premierleague

Looked sharp. Yeah right if you only count the first ten or twenty minutes. He went hiding after that…

Ha! Where’s Smithy in that list…………….even our defenders have a better record goalscoring than one of our “strikers” & you can’t give me that old chestnut “well he hasn’t been playing up front all season” – maybe we should put Taylor, Cacapa or Beye up front?

Drop him – like the ton of s*!t he is.

Very different if you look only at premiership goals, Martins has the most goals, Viduka scores the most per game but only fractionally above Martins, Owen is down the order.

7 votes for Smith in you’re poll, someones having a laugh !
Beye and Faye by far the best signings.

Owen is class and now he has to show it for Newcastle for him to re-gain his England spot.

Oba too is a natural goal scorer and hopefully he’ll start hitting the back of the net more often now.

Duke and Carroll should be next in line for that position.

Leo, I think you’ll find Oba was never at/in the ANC ! lol

    To Pele’s Big Toe
What the hell has Smithy done wrong? Of course he could have had a better score rate, but he works his ass off every week and deliever exellent passes most of the time. Tell me why you don’t like him? He was picked both by the England national team and by Allardyce last year, and Keegan must feel he is worth a place among the first 11 since he’s playing week in and week out.

I read this article about the fastest players with the ball at their feet and Oba is nowhere in the list and Bentley is number 10. Oba really needs to work on his dribbling, with his pace, strength and finishing he has the potential to be world class!

It would be good if we signed Bentley too, I initially didn’t think it, but he would add some much needed creativity and pace to the side (according to the article I read)!!!

How many goals has first choice striker ALAN SMITH got inthat list. 26 games and NO GOALS. How many attempts even? Kevin still keeps picking him. Apparently he is a key player according to Kevin. Is someone trying to get us relegated? Its all very well us bloggers saying Kevin must pick so and so….don’t even bother suggesting alternatives…get used to the idea that KK is picking Smudger. I would definitely play him for Hartlepool Rec serves. Incredible KK.

Kash2, Smith for 1 was about £6 mill (down the drain imo) and so was Enrique?

If Smith cost £2 million then he’d be ok (at best) for his price but a waste @ 6

Smudger has no goals in 26 games. Even I would back myself to get one goal in 26 games. For a fraction of his £60K a week wages

You would at least need some backing from our midfield players. Has he got service up front? Also Smithy hasn’t been used as a striker in more than 5 of those 26 games.
Like to see you try thou’

    Joey Barton – 24 – Manchester City – ₤5.8M – waste

    David Rozehnal – 27 – PSG – ₤2.9M – well !

    Mark Viduka – 31 -Middlesbrough – free – good

    Geremi – 28 – Chelsea – free – undecided.. good hopefully.

    Jose Enrique – 21 – Villareal – ₤6.3M – undecided

    Claudio Cacapa – 31 – Lyon – free – good

    Abdoulaye Faye – 29 – Bolton – ₤2M – good

    Habib Beye – 29 – Marseilles – ₤2M – great rb

The prices of the players imo is important also their wages too. This seemed like great business at the time and everyone (most) was happy and optimistic for the season.

He didnt even play one full game!!!!

How many games have we won in the premiership when Martins has been our striker (not on the wing) and how many have we won without him being striker??

Martins is 100% black and white unless he gets pushed out, Allerdyce started to unsettle him, hopefully that will end with Keegan, in the stadium I would say Martins is no1 listening to the fans.

There seems to be this misconception that just because someone (Smith) runs around the park like an idiot for 90 minutes then automatic selection for the first team is guaranteed. We could all do that and we would all be shite as well. Since wwhen was trying hard the only qualification. And another thing….Jane, are you Mrs Smith?:D

Why smith in midfield? no creativity, pace, passing ability, tackling is like a rugby player…we have got Emre, Barton, Zog, Geremi and even Butt better in midfield. Smith should be sold in the summer – £3m cut our losses and spend it wisely

That must be a wind up.
    Jane,
Smith has scored 4 goals in eight yeras… none for us. Why do you think Fergy sold him to us. If he cannot score for man U he cannot score for anybody. Man u do not sell 26 year olds unless surplus to requirements. He’s a forward who cannot score. Capello has sossed him and discarded him. He should play for Hartlepool Reserves.

That is why I would put him back in midfield, he does a lot of good work in midfield, I agree about his scoring, that is why he was brought in for the midfield and not the front. It is a shame he cant score the odd goal though, the best scoring midfielder is Butt, we got rid of our best recently Sibieski, that was Allerdyce.
