Keegan Warning to His Players

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has pointed out that there are many first team places still up for grabs at the club.

Kevin Keegan – urges players to capture first team spot

Kevin talked to Newcastle World today and called on his entire squad to start taking a regular starting position with just 12 league games still to be played – and we’ll need 12 points to survive in the Premier League.

Keegan said:

“I said to the players ‘There’s no-one nailing much down in terms of the first-team’,” “Usually you have seven, eight or nine who are definite regulars.

“But that’s an incentive for everyone at the club to get in the team.” “They can see they have got a good chance and that includes the young players.”

“All these young guys have got a future here and it’s down to them as much as it is to us.”

The fact that players have not nailed down first team starting positions, is probably indicative of the inconsistent form of most of our players this season.

But this is a good rallying call by the gaffer, because we’re sure he’s sizing up every player in the squad, and if they don’t measure up, they can look forward to being shipped out in the summer.

Yes, we know Sam didn’t do everything right while at the club, but the players have hardly helped either Big Sam or Kevin this season, with some of their inept performances.

It’s about time they did, and actually started earning those huge wages the club pays them. The players should all realize they have just 12 games left, in which to prove to Kevin and the staff why they should still be around at Newcastle United in August.

Comments welcome.

beye and faye should be the first names on the team sheet.

then owen on current form, followed by martins, milner and possibly zog and duff, if zog plays middle. beyond that at the moment its all up for grabs probably, and at the moment that includes given. until he proves he has probperly shaken off the hip injury which has really seemed to hamper him over the last season (mentally as well as physically).

surely this rallying call will only work if players want to nail down a 1st team place at newcastle united? given the fact that most clearly dont give a toss, and the others arent capable what effect is it likely to have?
And whats more, why is a starting place at newcastle that great anyway? Its no boast to be starting RB/LM/whatever for the most useless team in the premiership, at a club constantly battered by an unpleasant and vindictive press and with constant uncertainty at mgmt level?
I know this sounds critical, and this is from someone who loves this club. But just cant help feeling depressed… Personally, would love to just see KK field a team of total wildcards at least once this season. Why not something like:

    Harper
    Tozer/Edgar/Kadar/Taylor
    Zog/LuaLua/Emre/Milner
    Carroll/Martins

Throw Forster/Godsmark/Zamblera etc on the bench, and let them have a run out. Why not?

tom toon, would agree for the man utd game, zog and emre in the middle, wuold love to see that 11 but it won’t happen. shame really cos that midfield 4 plus two fast lads up front could cause some damage

Anyone think we should put a bid in for Farfan? Ino its the dutch league but it shows he can finish, i think he can also play right wing and he very much like asprilla. Hes got a temper, adaptable and his movement.

Yea, but Scotty, what’ve we got to lose in this game?..If we try to play defensively at home, we’ve prob. had it…Best form of defense v man who, is attack…From front to back!..i just think we’d be best served by giving them somethin’ to worry about from the get go, rather than letting them come on to us!?!..

    Given
    Beye Taylor Faye Enrique
    Milner Barton Emre N’Zogbia
    Owen Martins

Subs: Harper, Edgar, Duff, Lua Lua, Carroll

I dont think you can play emre and zog in the middle against united they will rip us to shreds i think barton is our best bet as he can break up their attacks and drive us forward and he also has good range of passing and shooting (Although he hasnt shown it us yet!)

The only thing with Emre & Barton in the middle is that we may end up with 9 men, knowarra mean?..
…Especially as the refs are homers when we play at their yard & awayers when we play at SJP v manure!..So i can see them 2 getting pretty het up!..i think it’s fair enough what you say, but i’d like to see Zog & Duff work the left together, could be a winning combo!?!..

it worked for man utd having two hot heads like keane and scholes in the middle (3 if you count a young beckham or even butt) they both got a fair few sendings of in their careers but were/are both outstanding players i dont think we should be afraid to play our best two centre mids because their tempers and biased refs

Fair point bro…D’y’not think Zog can cut it in the middle?..i think he could be a revelation!..& as of now, i’m yet to be convinced about Barton & after nearly putting someones lights out last game, he could be a liability to the team & himself…Y’d think he’d keep a low profile, the do-do he’s in already!..?

i do think zog could cut it but only in a diamond system not a flat 442. i dont think emre is good enough defensively to cover zoggys gaps when he bombs forward. butt could play in a diamond his break up of opponents attacks is still very good but his passing has been extremely weak this season. people say keegans sides are all out attack be we know that when he played rob lee, lee clark or pedro beardsley in the attacking mid role they always had a liam o’brien, paul bracewell or david batty behind them. next season if we bought a mikey carrick or alex song i would love to see zog play it again because undr roeder he played it a few times with amdy faye behind him and it worked really well (west brom home 06 springs to mind)

Hey, there’s a lotta sense in what y’saying!..I guess my thinking is Faye bein’ mobile, which i think he is, & destroying deeper midfield positions & basically helping free Zog a bit more, while also discharging his CB duties!..Maybe that’s askin’ too much, but i do rate him & think he’s very capable of doin’ that job!..& that would take some of the pressure off Emre!..I defo think y’right about Zog with Amdy Faye behind under Roeder, pity he didn’t play that more often!..

I know a lot of people didnt but i liked scotty parker he is just wot we lack at the moment he could play dm with zoggy pushing on as the attackin cm
parkers tackling, passing and shooting ability reminded me of gary speed and zog in the middle reminds me of dyer pacy dribbling and playing little throughballs to the strikers
in my opinion, ive been goin to SJP for years and speed and dyer were my fave cm partnership zog and parker would have been just as good but its a bit late now

I agree with you about Faye playing DM he plays it really well but i think he should stay as a centre back
I honestly beleive that if we sign a top left back like bridge or shorey next season we wil have a really good back 4 for the first time since the fairs cup winning joe harvey years!

    Beye Taylor Faye Bridge/Shorey
    looks really good to me

Aye, agree!..Maybe if various coaches had played Emre more often, he would be settled in & doin’ that job now!..& with regard to what you said about Butt: if he destroyed, then played quick, short passes instead of tryin’ too hard to create or wait for the killer ball he would be a lot better!..He needs to off the ball a lot quicker!..
…Pity about Parker, but he has been injured a lot this season, so maybe we got away with one there!..
…p.s…Bring Speed back as a coach!..

enrique is probs better defensively than shorey but shorey going forward is great his crossing and delivery from set pieces could set up 10-20 goals next season especially if owen can keep his scoring run going between now and the start of next season

we could rotate shorey and enrique depending on the opposition

punk skunk Yea emre could have played that role from younger he could drop back to a more defensive role like rob lee did near the end he has the stamina and passing ability but i think we need him further up field currently
also parker has been injured a lot so we probs had a lucky escape but i wish we had replaced him better than Joey “the mean fists of mersyside” Barton!!
