Newcastle United Relegation Watch

Our terrible defeat yesterday hasn’t lost us too much ground to those teams below us in the Premier League. Most of those teams also lost their games.

abdoulaye-faye-training.jpg

Abdoulaye Faye – scored for Newcastle yesterday

Indeed only 2 teams below us got any points. Birmingham got a fantastic result at home against Arsenal, after being a man down after just 3 minutes. Martin Taylor was sent off for a foul on Eduardo. The foul didn’t look too bad at the time but the resulting injury to Eduardo’s lower left leg was just horrendous.

eduardo.jpg

Eduardo broke his left leg after just 3 minutes against Birmingham

The game was held up for 10 minutes while Eduardo was attended to and taken from the field on a stretcher. He will be out for the rest of the season with a badly broken leg, The injury is so bad that there are worries his career may be over – but he’s out for the rest of the season.

In fact Birmingham went ahead through James McFadden after 28 minutes and he equalized in extra time after a stupid foul given up by Gael Clichy, which cost Arsenal a penalty and 2 points. Theo Walcott got his first goals in the Premier league scoring two good goals, the second one was tremendous.

Wigan Athletic beat Derby County 2-0, and they were the only other team to get any points yesterday. Even Middlesbrough, just one point above us were beaten 3-2 at Liverpool.

In today’s games Aston Villa beat Reading 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium and Blackburn Rovers scored 3 goals in the last 25 minutes to easily beat Bolton 4-1.

Here the results of the teams still below us in the league plus Middlesbrough, who are one point above us.

Team Against Venue Result GD Points

Middlesbrough Liverpool A L3-2 -16 29
Newcastle Man United H L5-1 -22 28
Wigan Derby H W2-0 -16 26
Sunderland Portsmouth A L1-0 -20 26
Bolton Blackburn A L4-1 -12 25
Birmingham Arsenal H D2-2 -13 23
Reading Aston Villa H L1-2 -23 22
Fulham West Ham H L1-0 -20 19
Derby Wigan A L2-0 -44 9

We play Blackburn Rovers at home next Saturday and we need some points. We really could do with a win and surely we are due one. But any points from this game would be welcome quite honestly.

Comments very welcome.

    thats Fayes first goal !!!

  • 2 steve // Feb 24, 2008 at 5:58 PM

We’re in big trouble, our midfield is non existent which means the defence is wide open to every attack. All the prem teams know they can just walk though our midfield and unless Keegan can sort this out we are going down.
Butt and Barton just aren’t good enough, Butt is probably over the hill and Barton looks nothing like the player he was at man city ( I suppose he has other things on his mnid)
Too many players look like they are going through the motions and we desperately need to stop playing Smith who is adding nothing to the team. Unfortunately our centre back pairing looks error prone no matter who we play, afraid we just don’t have good enough players all over the park.
Only good news is that both Bolton and Reading lost today but we can’t expect this to be the case every week and we need to get some points on the board

So, after working all of that out on the lovely BBC League Predictor, the final table stands like this:

    http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4657/prempredictum5.jpg

So, Newcastle end up on 35 points, 6 points safe – the same safety gap that we have at the moment.

Right now, i would take that with open arms.

    What you lot think!?

  • 5 Jamie // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:05 PM

I think we need to play Geremi Right back, move Beye inside and play faye holding mid along with Emre, get Enrique in at left back and replace duff with Nzogbia.
Put Carroll on for Smith and use Martins and not Owen and I think we can get a result.

  • 6 Alister Barnes // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:07 PM

I ran the fixtures for the remaining matches for all teams below us, and newcastle themselves, and this is the table that came out.

  • 7 Leo* I HATE NICKY BUTT // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:12 PM

yep our midfield is pap, which is causing our defence to look worse…

everytime manu got the ball and attacked the midfield center two were always the wrong side of the ball and so the defence had to step up and then manu with their pace rounded them easily and got goals…

compared to manu when we attacked both their cm players were always on the edge of the box so their defence was covered!

main culprits nicky butt and joey barton

i hate the whole cliche that two defencive midifeilders cant play next to eachother
ala nicky butt-scott parker or nicky butt- joey barton

its not because it cant work, its because they are far below par

  • 8 Callum // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:20 PM

I agree with Jamie although our defence is still weak due to Taylor/Cacapa :(

  • 9 Gooderz // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Having 2 defensive midfielders is a very continental system and to be effective it should be allowing 5/6 players to attack pretty much constantly. We should be seeing the fullbacks forward joining the wingers and 2 strikers but instead they stay back to help the defence.

The midfielders should be controling the game, not allowing any flow of passes by the other team, but again this isn’t done. They should also be able to keep hold of the ball, normally by passing it simply to a teammate, but again we have a resounding no.

Our players are leaving a lot to be desired. They should be doing better but they aren’t and it’s something that has been around for a while and it is becoming rather annoying to say the least. Whether it’s rebuilding with stars for the Premiership next season, of heaven forbid, with kids in the Championship, I look forward to a refreshing change in the whole ethos of the club.

  • 10 Nick C // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:34 PM

I think James has got it pretty much spot on there.

  • 11 Jamie // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:36 PM

I also think the Prem league has evolved over the last seasons.

The big four teams have pace, height all the way through the team, including the goal keepers, you look at our midfield Butt (very Slow, small, not very good on the ball) and Barton, slow, small, his mind not even in the right place) and we are fighting a losing battle already.

Its not surprise Man Utd played Carrick and Fletcher in there to out play and out muscle us, thus leaving man utds best players to get on with out pacing the defense.

Fact is our current team is just to small and fragile, yeah we have no pace either, but bigger players can cover more ground quicker fact, so I think we need to play either some more quicker players or bigger players.

This is why Carroll should start, Emre should start in for Butt and Smith.

Martins should start in place of Owen who has no pace now and Enrique for duff swapping Zogs over. The team is bigger and quicker with these changes.

The slower teams in say Blackburn and Everton all make up for that with strong players and flair players, blackburn just put 4 goals past bolton for god sakes, we couldn’t manage a single goal.

Keegan will have a fight on his hands when we play Blackburn and if changes are not made, we will give away at least a goal and prob wont get a result.

I can see martins and Carroll giving their defense a good test though if played! please play them Keegan!

  • 12 Jamie // Feb 24, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Just noticed Emre and Martins are injured :(

    o dear.

  • 13 Swede1891 // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:08 PM

Jamie youre completely right..its just sooooo sad that our two best players are out injured. (emre, martins) the big question though is why kk keeps on playing butt&barton in the middle..?? how many dreadful performances will we see from them before something changes there? kk has to show more balls…said this before:: there must be “something” in Butts contract that states that he has to start every game….cant think of any other reason why…

  • 14 Nick C // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:15 PM

JJ sends in a mint free kick and Woody heads it home to win the Cup. Doesn’t exactly cheer you up does it??

  • 15 Hadrian // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:17 PM

    ED .

I have an article you can do for us !! .

keegans getting alot of grief , and some unfair critcism for his time as a manager .
be nice if you could actually put the facts down in print for some of these people to understand .
things like the state of the clubs he’s took over and what he’s done with them in short spaces of time , his win % compared to other premiership managers .
and the fact that the only people to have won something in this league mostly come from the big teams where managers have had ample reasources from the day they walked into the jobs .
get those defensive stats down in print for all to read, try and rid us of the myth about keegan cant defend .

fact is we have a bloody good manager , but a useless set of players that 3 managers havent been able todo jack with .

  • 16 Jamie // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:19 PM

Hadrian – completely 100% spot on

People listen, its the players not the manager(s) is why we are where we are, they just are not up to the task required.

  • 17 J // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:21 PM

    ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ED

Isnt that eduardos RIGHT leg he is holding in that picture?????????????????????????????????????????????

  • 18 milnerfan // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:25 PM

i think to sort out the midfield problem we should play 4 1 3 2

    owen duke

    n zog emre milner

    faye

    Enrique cacapa taylor beye

    given

subs harper, carroll, duff, edgar gerimi

that wya the back for is a lil more protected, just depends on how well emre can create and disrupt

  • 19 milnerfan // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:26 PM

@ j no thats his left leg lol

  • 20 Jamie // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:45 PM

Don’t want to see cacapa in the team, way to slow!

Duke should start if martins can’t play, carroll can come on for him, or play him and carroll? two big lads up top.

  • 21 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:45 PM

I would play Edgar against Blackburn along side Faye at cb.
Edgar come on against West Ham 2 goals down and sured up the defense after Ramage handed them 2 goals the usaual for Ramage.
Started his first game against Man U and played out of position and scored a 30 yard screamer to draw the game.
The only thing went wrong for him on the pitch was that the collision with with Pavel at Bolton.
I have heard he is playing very well for the reserves and he must think what he must have to do to get a game or even make the bench. He has been watching Rozenhal, Cacapa, Taylor and Carr making mistakes all season he must be pretty pissed off i would be.

  • 22 unhappyfan // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I am fed up of watching this team they are shi* and it feels like none of them want to play for us
so im giving up on newcastle they are just soo embarrassing to watch it’s hurt my pride i once had for supporting them and i could go on and on about it but i wont this is 1 fan you have lost thanks for nothing

  • 23 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Barton was known for being a good passer of the ball great tackler and very commited something i have not seen since he joined. I would love to ask KK why he is always in his starting 11 cos he has done nothing but embarrass the club has starting every game got something to do with McDermott being Barton’s best mate.
Does anyone know why Terry Mc has been in the papers 4 times this week more than he has been in the last 4 years and does anyone know if he actually trains the players cos looking at him he is a complete wreck and looks like a total bamp.

  • 24 Ed Harrison // Feb 24, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Hadrian – I’d do the article – in the next few days – many thanks for suggestion.

  • 25 Paul // Feb 24, 2008 at 8:35 PM

J when i went to school hes holding his left leg

  • 26 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Given is now to injury prone and unreliable.
Carr has been shocking and should never play for us again far to slow and fatttttttttttttttt.
Enrique has not impressed to much but heard good things about him and he will never improve if he is not getting a game hardly good for his confidence.
Rozenhal to weak and simply not up to prem lge hope we never see him again.
Emre been here a while but not done much and to injury prone although he cares for the club unlike some.
Cacapa looks to weak and has cost us many points this season.
Barton a complete joke hope he gets beasted in jail and he or Allardyce should pay his transfer fee back he has been so bad.
Martins could be a great but needs to clean up his finishing especially 1 on 1s and needs to stop throwing the dummy out.
Owen has always scored goals and always will if he get the service something he has not been getting.
Duff has never done it for us and by the way he is playing he never will to weak has no pace cannot beat defenders anymore.
Harper has never clet us down and is a top keeper and in my opinion would now do a better job than sicknote Given.
Milner works his socks off everygame game but lacks quality in the final 3rd but he is only young and that will improve.
Smith prob not had 3 good games for us and at 6 milo a complete waste of money people say he has a good attitude but kicking people and throwing abuse at the ref and getting bokked is not good attitude.
Geremi has also been pretty bad and has not got the pace to play in the prem lge by far the slowest player at the club only done well at the acn playing against lge 2 standard players.
Beye had one of his worst games for us yesterday but has been 1 of the only positive things to come out of this season.
Ramage never has or never will be good enough to play for us and he will prob end up in non lge football i think he is that bad.
Taylor in my opinion is overated and if we can get 7- 10mil for him would be good business although i think he would do a good job in 1 of the top teams in the lge.
Edgar should be getting a game ahead of Cacapa and Taylor and has done very well when he has played.
Baheng have not seen him play.
Forster very promising young keeper and heard he is doing very well.
Tozer have not seen him play although heard he is doing good.
Viduka fat and lazy will scored goals but he is never fit to score just happy to pick up his fat pay packet evry week after doing nowt.
Troisi not heard very good things about him and he looks like a hippy.
LuaLua seen him and he looks quality especially with the ball at his feet def 1 for the future.
Carroll should be getting a start been saying for ages he is strong quick brave and good in the air all the qualitys for a top striker.
Krul injure at the minute but 1 for the future.
Kadar heard he is doing very well still very young but if they don’t fancy Enrique at lb why not give him a go.
Faye looks solid enough along with Beye fattys best signing.
Ameobi this is the only club that would keep a player of his quality for this long he will never be a success at the club.

Derby: I Dont care they wont stay up anyway
but we gave them all the help we could!!!

I know people are going on that predictor thing but i read through the teams fixtures at least we have enough winnable games to get to that 40 point mark. I’m being harsh on the other sides around the relegation zone because im not giving them many points but i cannot see those teams picking up many points so if we win just 2 of our games (Fulham & Reading for example) that will give us 34 points and i just cant see any of those sides getting to that 34 point mark with their fixtures.

At the end of the season We’ll be laughing at how nervous we were right now because there is no reason to be.

  • 28 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 9:18 PM

I have left Zog off the list in my opinion when played in the right position he is our most dangerous player by far.
Craigg how are you so confident we will score 3 past Blackburn when have not scored 3 in the lge since october when we were not so easy to beat.

  • 29 CRAIGG // Feb 24, 2008 at 9:24 PM

Because i thought we would beat man utd im to optimistic
but i think we will get to the 40 point mark and i think it will be a record low points total for the bottom 3

  • 30 daiv // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:09 PM

We will stay up because there are worse teams. The fact is that KK has made the team worse than Sams management. We got KK and Spurs got Ramos. Once again we have chosen the wrong manager. KK will spend a fortune in the summer buying English players to get us 6th/7th and then wander off realising he will never win anything. We need to but top quality Europeans/Africans but his vision is limited to expensive average English players like Bridge, Dunn or Henry (French OK) (Would Arsenal buy him back?)

  • 31 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Daiv- Bot why would Ramos pick us ahead of Spurs i hate Spurs but they are way ahead of us in terms of quality of players, good young players, finances, transfer kitty and Ramos said it was perfect for his family to move to London there was no chance of him coming to us.

  • 32 daiv // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:28 PM

    CJ
My point is we have chosen the wrong guy again. Always the wrong manager. We should have chosen foreign rather than a has been who is out of touch. Smith and Butt til the end of season and possible relegation. The right team would def stay up but Keegan is loyal to star names (has beens).

  • 33 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Daiv- Ithink KK will get it right next season. I agree Smith and Butt are not the answer they are 2 defensive midfielders who can not defend we would concede less goals with Zog and Emre in there. If KK plays Smith it has to as a striker like yesterday but i would still pick Owen Carroll Martins Viduka and possibly Shola ahead of Smith.

  • 34 daiv // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:50 PM

    CJ,
Everybody can see who the rubbish players are…except KK. He is getting paid a fortune to pick the wrong team. The fans need to speak out or else we could get relegated.

  • 35 daiv // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:52 PM

    CJ,
Smith could not score in a brothel with £1,000 in his hand.

  • 36 CJ // Feb 24, 2008 at 10:55 PM

Agree about Smith he could not score in a brothel with a half mil cheque on the end of his bell.

  • 37 mikeygd // Feb 24, 2008 at 11:05 PM

    lay off f***ing k***gan u idiot!

  • 38 mikeygd // Feb 24, 2008 at 11:06 PM

I dont think they should start on Kevin Keegan either, this service business to Owen is in the main part rubbish, yes if there were better balls through then he may score, but the type of service you speak of is Beckham and Bentley type service, why do people rave about Beckham and Bentley? Because of their amazing crosses. Good defence of the Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United can handle decent service to the oppositions strikers, they would have trouble handling pin point amazing service from the likes of Beckham but there are only one or two players on the planet of that pinpoint accuracy, what none of the top teams can handle are players who run at them, they cannot handle the likes of Martins, Torres and Anelka, unless we could go out and pick up off the shelf half a dozen Beckham type quality players to support the likes of Owen service is not going to be brilliant, until then we need strikers who can create something from very little, and that isnt Owen it is Martins, once the midfield and defenders that we now have see a player who isnt going to keep holding up both hands because the service isnt perfect and can cause danger to the opposition the spirit of the team will lift and they will have someone to aim for, then Owen may also pick up something form Martins runs or rebounds off the post or spills from the keeper.
This is what our team is without Martins or a similar player, the same as it was without Bellamy, we cannot afford not to have at least one player of this type fit or available at any one time.

can’t remember who made the comment about keegan signing over priced english players of average quality, but didn’t keegan bring in the likes of albert and ginola from abroad?

didn’t he bring in a lot of lesser knowm domestic players who improved during there time with us rob lee, andy cole

which overpriced english players did he bring in?

    shearer? batty? beardsley? ferdinand?

    they all delivered

even players like darren peacock or warren barton whilst expensive, delived on there price in comparison to more recent players

Hopefully Martins,Emre & Enrique to start playing regularly for rest of the games. If can’t do, just blood some youngsters, notably in CM/AM,LB & CF. Can’t bear the pain & humiliation to watch Butt,Barton, Smith & N’Zogbia’s (in LB) inept performance anymore. Others’d be given some more games to get things right. Oh yes Given must be on bench lets Harper plays on forth. If only KK listened/learned/to change what was wrong, we’ll soon win. A win that’s hugely important to get more wins & points.

I think all they need is someone at the front to give them the hope of a goal, it must be sickening to keep getting the ball clear of our goal and no-one worrying the opposition’s goal, while it is always a team effort and one player no matter how good at the front cant win a game for us, I really think Martins can lift a team, the same way he lifts fans, I think that is all it will take to turn games round, once that happens Keegan has something to work on, at the moment what is there? Owen cant score without silver service, Smith is no good as a striker but ok in midfield, Viduka turns up how he feels on the day, Ameobi is clumsy and Carroll while ok in the last match doesnt seem to want to grasp his first team opportunity, so Martins has to be the spark for us to improve.
    Get him fit and quickly.
