Chris Hughton So Down To Earth

In his first week as Kevin Keegan’s Assistant Manager at Newcastle, Chris Hughton has indicated the first priority for this season is to stay in the Premier league, and he’s so right about that.

Chris Hughton – new Assistant Manager seems down to earth

Chris Hughton said yesterday:

“Our first priority this season is to achieve safety, and then we can build for next season during the summer.”“The standard of the Premier League now is so high. The teams in the bottom half of the table are also strong and everybody is fighting for survival.”

“Of course, with Kevin coming in everybody is expecting that additions will come in to strengthen what we already have, and then we will go from there.”

“When you have been in the game for as long as I have, the opportunity to come to a club of this stature is always going to be too big an opportunity to turn down.”

“When the phone call came, it was very welcome and I jumped at the chance straight away.”

“My role is to support Kevin as part of a coaching group that we feel can enhance the qualities of the team.”

Good words from Chris and he is working this week, along with Kevin and our other coach Steve Round, to try to strengthen our defense. That’s no easy task at Newcastle, since we seem to have had defensive problems for at least a decade.

We thought we would have fixed that when Big Sam brought in so many defensive reinforcements in the summer, but they just haven’t strengthened our defense at all. It’s as bad as ever, and we’ll still need some defenders and midfield players in the summer. A left back and a center back will be the minimum we need to bring in to shore up our back line.

Next game up is against Blackburn on Saturday, and while that will not be easy surely there’s a chance we can break our 10 game league stretch without a win.

Wouldn’t that be a welcome win?

Comments very welcome.

If Edgar isn’t up to the task of First Team football, which I think he just needs a chance to show then we need 2 first team CB’s to come in and possibly 2 LB’s as well, considering Enrique hardly gets a game.

And we basically need a whole new midfield. I would honestly get rid of all midfield players except Milner and N’Zogbia. So we’d basically need at least 3 MC’s, LM and RM. All of which need to be of very good quality.

I really think that Viduka and Shola must go, so then we need another striker to go with them.

Thats 10 players to sign in pre-season. You must be joking, even Championship teams have stronger squads than us!!!!

The jury is still out on the whole set-up in my mind. Ashley brought Keegan in to inject some magic, some belief, some passion and its failed miserably. Mind having sacked the manager with no thought of who was going to run the club wasnt the smartest move and then being turned down by the muppet ‘Arry must have been a right smack in the mouth.

Keegan then had the team with him for 2 weeks solid, before the Man Ure game and look what was achieved – nothing!!!!! Still playing Smith in midfield when he is no more than a grafter; normally running round like a headless chicken- WHY? We must have a better midfielder than him, so why is he on the pitch??

Roll on the summer; hopefully we will have something to look forward to come August!!!

@tony – I’d let Given go, he’s been a great player for the toon but he’s now starting to look past his best, Taylor is a squad player and makes to many mistakes, Milner needs to practice crossing – we basically need at least 10 players of quality to come in

    I would keep …

Given Harper Krul Forster Taylor Milner LuaLua Carroll and Martins Duff Beye Smith (Possibly if we couldnt get any better) The rest are PAP !! Especially Carr & Barton

I think KK personally will bring in about 6-8 new big players personally and about 5 young up and coming players.

I just cant wait for the rebuilding to start I am so sick of this cr*p at the moment !! Not Keegans fault though its Freddie Shep & Fat Sam !!

The reason the defence is so poor is because the midfield is crap, we just invite pressure every single game.

We need to offload at least 5 bad apples in the summer and bring at least 7 class players.
I know that many of you will disagree with me by saying that we’re not in Europe next season so the class players would not come to us.
Well i don’t believe in that, just look at Man City last summer, did they offer European football to the players they signed…NO.
WE ARE NEWCASTLE and we only had bad luck in the last 3 years by not qualifying in CL.
Just remember AC Milan in the late mid 90’s when they finished twice in the midtable.
One thing’s for sure, that is we need at least 50 mill from MA + the sale of some our players to build a completely new squad.
    NEWCASTLE FOR LIFE

I think what the past weeks have shown, since Keegan’s return, is that a big influx of players is needed in the summer. With the exception of Given, Milner, Duff, Barton and Owen, I think there are too many average players in the squad or has-beens who, for one reason or another, are happy to plod on and pick up a decent wage without putting in the required effort. It will be interesting who comes in in the summer but I’m hoping 7 or 8 big earners are shipped out as well.

Sam brought beye, faye and enrique and they have all looked good when they played. Even players like Cacapa would be good players if they werent so harshly judged and instead were given time to adjust to the epl. Also, we do not know how much money Sam got so stop jumping to conclusions saying “sam dont know how to spend money” that is just a rash comment with nothing to back it up. We had players like ameobi, but, carr etc before he came.

@Dragoner – Sam also bought Smith, Barton, Rozenhal, Geremi all of which have looked poor, lets face it something must be drastically wrong with Enrique if both Sam and KK won’t play him
I agree the problems started long ago, probably under Souness then compounded by Roeder, Sam

I don’t know why people go on about Sven and Man City, he spent over 50 million quid and they’re lying in 8th place, they looked terrible against Everton, remind me which “top stars” they attracted that were wanted by other top teams……. aye thats it = none

dragoner i agree if we were more aclined to give players like cacapa a try and wait, we may realise that we have one hell of a defender at our club… look at faye, hes looked good, but thats because he has prermiership experience.

beye is a right back and they take much less time to acclimatise to this league, the center back position (especially at our club) is a hard position to come into from abroad

if only our defense already have got were arguably any good at all, we’d do with just an addition of 1 better quality CB & 1 B. Then we have to replace at least 3 CMs in midfield if we are to oust Butt, Barton, Smith (is he a CF?). The midfield reinforcement is an undoubtedly our main priority as our midfield players (some might say donkeys/clowns) were non-existence which led the team never stop conceding silly goals.

Steve you don’t know much about players outside of the epl do you. Players like bojinov, elano, bianchi (weren’t good at city) and petrov were all highly rated players at the time. those are the type of “top class” stars i am talking about. Yes city sit in 8th, but the football they have been playing is far far superior to ours and the manager and players are only in their first season at the club. It would just be blind to not aknowledge how far away man city are from us right now.

If we offload as expected, we will lose money on transfers coz no one in their right mind would buy some of the crap we have here. What if the player refuses to be transferred coz he doesn’t want to take a drop in wages? We will be left with a pile of sh*t, but the player will be trapped here. These guys won’t be selected for their countries. They won’t be playing for us. No other manager will give them a second look after they’ve been out so long and not playing.

This going to get a lot worse. We are going to lose a lot of cash. Let’s hope we can hang on in. Hope is all we’ve got. KK is part of that hope. Never mind all this ‘let’s be positive’ nonsense. Just play the cards we’re holding.

I think we will get rid of 3 or 4 players and bring in 5 or 6 senior ones. We have the money to buy players so get on with it. Smith won’t be going unless he doesnt score a single goal.

i think that sven is a right wee honey and thats why he can get the bigs boys in. KK will play attacking football with us next season but we’ll be lucky to be top 8 next year. Something i would like to point out is that KK had 5 years to streghten our defence and never did it. What makes you think he’ll do it this time.
