The Daily Mirror today is reporting that Kevin Keegan is ready to swoop for St Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis.
Bafetimbi Gomis – 6’0″ Senegalese striker wanted by Newcastle?
Gomis is French of Senegalese descent and a striker who stands just over 6’0†tall and has played 55 times for St Etienne and scored 12 goals.
The transfer fee quoted is £12M, but we have no verification of that. That seems awfully high for a player who has only represented France at the Under-17 level just once, which is the limit of his International experience.
The report says that Kevin will fly to France this weekend to look at Gomis on Sunday. St Etienne have already turned down a £7M offer from Bolton.
Here is Gomis’ playing record in France:
Years Club App Goals 2003-2005 Saint-Étienne 17 2 2005 Troyes AC 13 6 2005-present Saint-Étienne 55 12 2001-2002 France U-17 1 0
£12M for this player seems way over the top, so we trust that will not be the price. It’s hard to say whether this would be a good buy or not. Certainly he’s young enough but his goal scoring record in France isn’t that great.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #1Find it hard to place any faith in this story Ed. I think you sum it up well when you say it is a lot of money for a poor scoring record and for someone who is not attracting the attention of bigger names.
I think this is a space saver for the paper only.

Comment #712 goals in 55 games in a weak league is a very poor return – 12 million is a waste of money – this story has gotta be false

Comment #8Dont believe it, this would be taking buying new talent too far, Cisse is only £4 to £6m.
We need one seasoned pro who is on form now, we are already gambling with two recovering/recovered from injury strikers, Viduka and Owen, two youngsters Carroll and Fabio, we do not have one reliable strike partnership, if Martins and Owen went out with injuries which is possible where would we be left?

Comment #15We need a new age manager for this new age of football. I know this is not the point being portrayed here but KK’s appointment was just papering up the cracks with black and white stripped wallpaper. We all love him and want him to do well, but he will fail and quit like he

Comment #18on this subject thought i’m telling you, this guy is a great player. If anyone else has seant and watches the french games will see that he is class. People may state that its only the french league but Beazami (wrong spelling probably) at lyon plays in the same league and fergie is desperate to get him. He would be a perfect foil for owen or martins….i would love to se him at newcastle….but we need a new defence…taylor out.

Comment #20No glory hunter, thats not what i meant. I meant modern. with modern thinking, a man in touch with the game and the modern way of playing that will bring new thinking to the club…like ramos at spurs…..Our aging gray haired cheer leader isn’t gonna do the business and we all deep down know it, but choose not to believe it.

Comment #29Bafetimbi Gomis born 8 June 1985
Saint-Ettiene
During his time with St-Étienne Gomis’ power and pace have evoked strong comparisons to African strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Didier Drogba. Arsène Wenger also is said to be an admirer of the target man.
Summer Transfer
In February 2008 the French football magazine L’Equipe stated that Paul Le Guen had been keeping tabs on the powerful striker during his time with Rangers, and as a result the current Rangers manager Walter Smith has also openly admitted his desire to sign Gomis in the summer. St-Étienne are holding out for a price of £3.3 million, negotiations are set to begin in the summer window.
On Februrary 29, 2008 The Daily Mirror reported Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan was planning a £12 Million bid for Gomis

Comment #30this one is in same side as gomis
Lamine Diatta
He has been linked with Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City of the Premier League. However, on 29th February 2008 it was reported that Diatta was set to join up with Kevin Keegan at Newcastle United by signing a one-year deal.

Comment #31He sounds promising and Tom Toon took the word out of my mouth…He could be the new Drogba cause he exploded exactly at the same age like this guy Gomis.
I’m really impressed that KK is looking for players outside England. He should look for Jeremy Menes aswell but i doubt we could get him unless we offer some crazy amount of money.

Comment #33Don’t think another striker is what we need. Think we’d all agree that an attacking central midfielder is essential right now. But, as always, we need a world class centre back. I just wish that Woodgate had signed for us. Sicknote or not, he was the best I ever saw in that position.

Comment #40I rate Bafetimbi Gomis very highly! Also, St. Etienne has two other players we should look at Moustapha Bayal Sall (central defender) and Blaise Matuidi (defensive midfield)
