Sky Sports is reporting today that Newcastle United may be closing in on a deal for Senegal defender Lamine Diatta.
Lamine Diatta – Senegal captain available as free agent
Diatta is a free agent and therefore can be brought to the club immediately. He bought himself out of his contract with Besiktas. The defender is believed to have traveled over to England earlier this week as he seeks to secure a move to the Premier League.
He has recently been linked with Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City but it appears that Newcastle have jumped to the head of the queue for the defender.
The 32-year-old defender stands 6’1†and is an experienced player having previously played for Stade Rennais and Lyon in the French League.
Not surprisingly, Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is keen to plug the Magpies weak defense, and is reportedly going to offer Diatta a short-term deal at the club.
Here is Diatta’s playing record:
Years Club App Goals 1998-1999 Toulouse FC 25 0 1999 Marseille 0 0 1999-2004 Stade Rennais 129 9 2004-2006 Olympique Lyonnais 32 0 2006-2007 St. Étienne 25 1 2007-2008 Besiktas JK 10 0 2000- Senegal 26 1
If Keegan does bring Diatta in, then it shows just how poor we are in defense, and that our current crop of defenders just don’t seem to be good enough.
The fact that we already have Senegal stars Faye and Beye should also be an advantage, since it will help Lamine to settle quickly at the club, which he will need to do.
