Newcastle Linked With Senegal Defender

Sky Sports is reporting today that Newcastle United may be closing in on a deal for Senegal defender Lamine Diatta.

Lamine Diatta – Senegal captain available as free agent

Diatta is a free agent and therefore can be brought to the club immediately. He bought himself out of his contract with Besiktas. The defender is believed to have traveled over to England earlier this week as he seeks to secure a move to the Premier League.

He has recently been linked with Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City but it appears that Newcastle have jumped to the head of the queue for the defender.

The 32-year-old defender stands 6’1” and is an experienced player having previously played for Stade Rennais and Lyon in the French League.

Not surprisingly, Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is keen to plug the Magpies weak defense, and is reportedly going to offer Diatta a short-term deal at the club.

Here is Diatta’s playing record:

Years Club App Goals

1998-1999 Toulouse FC 25 0
1999 Marseille 0 0
1999-2004 Stade Rennais 129 9
2004-2006 Olympique Lyonnais 32 0
2006-2007 St. Étienne 25 1
2007-2008 Besiktas JK 10 0
2000- Senegal 26 1

If Keegan does bring Diatta in, then it shows just how poor we are in defense, and that our current crop of defenders just don’t seem to be good enough.

The fact that we already have Senegal stars Faye and Beye should also be an advantage, since it will help Lamine to settle quickly at the club, which he will need to do.

Comments welcome.

Neither have I. But I suppose people hadn’t really heard of Killer Kilcline when Keegan brought him here.

Apparently Wigan are also interested. Has been described as a one pace defender but reliable and a solid part of the Senegal defence. Another rumour is about a Bafetimbi Gomis. He is a French striker of Senegalese descent. Looked at him on and he looks strong, fast, great on the volley with a powerful shot, and a great antidote to Smith and Viduka.
Perhaps he is a summer buy?

Can’t be much worse than our current crop. At least this plugs the hole in the squad left by Rozenhal.

Linked with Bolton and Wigan….and us. Quite a sad state of affairs that we have to dredge the barrel, but to be honest we need ANYONE who can make a difference.

All I would like is to see a pairing decided on and stuck with for the rest of the season. No more of this chopping and changing crap if someone has a bad game. For me it’s Beye and Faye at CB (Enrique and Geremi at LB and RB respectively), or for all you (foolishly?) diehard Taylor fans, then it would be Taylor and Faye (with Enrique and Beye at LB and RB).

glad this guy might be coming, because it seems that he isnt just doing it for the money, paying himself out of a contract so he can play in the premierleague.

what do you mean by one paced? slow or fast? if his one pace is fast then we dont mind so much lol

Steeley you are bang on mate,Beye & Faye for Centre Halves,Geremi right back and enrique left back……………..Taylor makes school boy mistakes and too many people are blinkered to the fact he’s from up here…..against Man Utd Ronaldo made him look a fool a couple of times..Keegan might only get this defender in as a short term deal .eg….Just till end of season……if he done that then it cant be a bad thing..

never heard of him. Why lose Roz, an experienced international who’s quite young for a 31yr old journey-man who has spent 1year at most of his clubs(they obviously didnt fancy him). Why cant we tell player they’re under contract and to stop wingeing. Look at M Laursen & j Lescott, 2 players who werent that good initially but have come on leaps and bounds with the right coaching. We take one look and decide theyre not good enough?? if this is the case shouldnt we of looked closer b4 we purchased them?? typical toon. react first think second. how many players are we gonna lose to player power. JJ, Dyer, Solano (all who have never lived in London) claiming theyre homesick. & now N’Zog?? has he even been there apart from wandering around in a huff during his walk-out a fulham? tell players to be quiet & concentrate on playing for the club the signed for, for a lot of cash!!!

From the Besiktas team that Liverpool knocked in 8 against. This does not bode well…

I remember the first time KK was manger here.
His first signing was a Spurs defender who i believe never played in the first team for us, hope it is not a case of De ja vu.
Mind you we did actually go on to sign some cracking players after .

I’d be in favour of us bringing in anyone who can avoid doing a clownish pirouette just at the precise moment Cristiano Ronaldo is running towards them at full pelt.

I say we buy in 11 defenders and just line them up in front of the goal. Then all we have to do is hope they don’t jump when Ronaldo kicks the ball low.

I reckon we could probably get at least 38 points a season that way.

    Who’s with me?!!

mark, why sign him up?? cos he is the captain of the side that came 2nd in the african nations cup, and is captain of the 2 best players in our side at the moment.

would be more than happy to give him a 2 year deal, this season he can from a wall with his 2 senegal colleagues and then next year maybe if we bring someone in he can be a good back up.

at this stage of the season when the transfer window is closed, top players are not available, id be happy to give this guy a game he really cant be any worse than our defenders. Big sams main aim was to tighten our defence when he came what a wonderful job he did utter shite!

He plyed for st etienne along with gomis, then move to besiktas and they got thrashed 8-0 with him in defence, he isnt better than any of our defenders.

Newcastle do my head in. We have EDGAR who brought Ronaldo to a standstill ,playing out of position at left back and still found time to score himself last year in the 2-2 draw at home. Never been seen again.
Why go after sub standard journeymen like this Diatta .
Why stick with all these past sell bys like Butt, Smith, Duff etc and goons like Barton.
We could have half a decent team with lua Lua, Emre, Martins, Enrique, Edgar.

Worries me that he is a free agent and is another ANC player, if we keep signing these players we will have to play the reserves when the African Nations Cup is being played!!

Lost 8-0 to Liverpool with Besiktas. I know one man can’t take the blame for that sort of beating, but that’s just embarassing. Edgar ahead of him anyday.
