Alan Smith Only A Good Squad Player?

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is saying today that his other England striker, Alan Smith will become a big hit with the fans.

Alan Smith - still has to hit first goal for Newcastle

Before today’s match Keegan talked to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle about Alan Smith:

“If it was about honesty, determination and hard work, then Alan Smith would have scored three or four goals for us now.”“But I think he’s only really had one chance, and that was a half-chance. We haven’t created enough for him.”

“It would be nice for him to score. I’d love to see him get a goal because he deserves to from his endeavor, honesty and work rate.”

“You can’t get enough Alan Smiths around your club. They’re good people to have. They come in every day, train properly, set good standards and have a bit of character. I like him a lot.”

“The thing is, he’ll probably start scoring a goal or two on the back of his endeavor and then they’ll love him.”  “You’d love him to be a fans’ favorite because he should be, but fans will see what they see.”

The thing with Alan is he’s an excellent squad player, but not particularly potent in any one position. Keegan is right to use him up front with Michael Owen, since that’s his best position, but because he hasn’t scored any goals, we don’t think he deserves his place in the side right now – it’s as simple as that.

We having nothing against Alan and he’s a decent player, but if you don’t score goals you cannot expect to remain a striker for too long. After this piece we hope Alan goes out and scores today to make us look bad – we’d love that! :D

But we’d much rather see Andy Carroll or Oba Martins start today, but with these words from Kevin, it looks odds on that Smith will again start the game today. But we need a win – we need all 3 points today however we can get them.

What do you think about this? Comments always welcome.

Apart from when he was at Leeds, AS has never set the football world alight. ManU took him and he had a couple of decent games and scored a couple of goals, but apart from that nothing. I know he had a bad broken leg, which would hamper most people, but his actual ability seems to be lacking. One thing you can not accuse him of is lack of effort, at least he tries, unfortunately we need more than effort just now.

Them comments SHOW that he will be JUST like Big Sam and ALWAYS play him in ANY position.

    GREAT!!!!!! (Sacarsm)

alan smith deserves his starting place, if noone is creating him chances how can he score? just get off his back he is qaulity simple

  • 4 Paul R // Mar 1, 2008 at 1:13 PM

100% effort but no goals strikers need to score goals that is what they are judged on !! its as plain and simple as that !!

    “he is qaulity simple”

you seem to more about simple than quality yourself, mate!

Wrong George he was prolific when he first went to Man U but then Van Nistelrooy walked back into the team on reputation not merit. Smith broke his leg and has never been the same player since.

Smith is rubbish. You lot need a head check if you say he’s a gud player.

  • 8 mikeygd // Mar 1, 2008 at 1:41 PM

i wouldnt mind if he played him with martins and owen today but just dont play owen and smith on there own with martins and carrol on the bench otherwise we will concede alot and score none.

  • 9 sas1 // Mar 1, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Smith hasn’t scored a league goal since 2005, and Andy Carroll couldn’t hack it at Preston, neither of these two are the answer to our problems.

It should be Martins and Owen or Martins Viduka. Don’t know if Vid is still injured tho?

I certainly haven’t seen any real class by Smith in black n white, effort yes and energy but 90% of his play is with his back to goal and poxy pass backs.
If he turned and ran towards goal he’d be a different player but for some reason he rarely does it.
Is it a question of supply? I don’t think so, look at Owen no supply but still manages to score, even Oba can make his own luck too, they are natural goal scorers something which Smith hasn’t been for a long time.
I’d love Smith to prove us all wrong but how many chances does he need?
Carroll was on for a short while last game and played well right away! I’d put him ahead of Smith anyday.
Oba to start or atleast play some part of the game today.

sas1 – Preston are a shite little club who are probably going down to league 1, if he had been at a decent club he’d have done well.

t-g-w, prolific? he scored 12 goals while @ Man U, wonder how many yellow/red cards? lol

  • 14 hanzemre // Mar 1, 2008 at 1:49 PM

oh that’s allright. am not gonna slate him nomore. right now (b4 game) be united we can win this…hopefully AS scores so i can forget his past… howay the lads!

Ya like he had a few good United games, he seemed to get a long very well with the Man U players, obviously he was never as big as the likes of Rooney and such but he really inspired a few good games with Man U like the Roma demolition, but why is it we rarely see that here if he can do it with the big names then why not with us. especially when we need it so much. I remember thinking ages ago that he’d be a good captain some time in the future but I’m not sure anymore. He’s got everything to prove.

I just dont get it, we all slated Dyer for not playing on right wing for Wor Bobby, and we slate Smith for playing where ever the manager requests, he is a striker pure and simple. Owen has has looked average and so has Smith but they both have some class about them. Id much rather Smith in the team than Viduka who has got to that age where his legs dont want it no more as much as his heart and head. But if we start Smith Owen and Martins today then will we get on keegans back for not playing 442????

This is the time when all fans, players and staff need to stand up and be counted. We all may think some players are not good enough but with confidence this low Manure would struggle (granted they have so much more classs but they wouldnt be challenging at the top). Personally i believe the team should be told back to basics, pass the ball and move. play the simple balls and keep possesion and then build on that. id gaurentee that if we played simple football for 20 mins at start of this game and get Blackburn chasing the ball then we will win. Every ball doesnt need to be played forward just to a newcastle shirt backwards if needs be. we need to keep moving and we will find ourselves in great possisions!!!!
would love to see the simple football that i know we can play and then attack whole heartedly when the oppotunity arrises.

If Smith keeps getting his place, we could very well go down.

He offers absolutely nothing. No goal threat, cannot beat his man, either in the air, or on the ground, his passing & vision are very poor at best.

I’m 100% behind KK, but he has to be brave, be adventurous with the team selection.

Lua Lua looks like he can run at people, Carroll, Martins & Owen up front.

    Ho’way the Lads !!

  • 18 Carr is shite // Mar 1, 2008 at 2:30 PM

I can understand why kk keep playing smith in the first team because you can see he is working extremely hard in training. But the problem is that all his hardworks are wasted as he could not perform on the field. KK find it hard to drop him in the line-up becos he say that he is a role model for the player in trainings. But what we need now is players that can actully perform.

  • 19 briss // Mar 1, 2008 at 2:44 PM

i had a dream last night that smith scores a wonder goal today and plays phonomenal! also we win 3-1! i hope thats what happens

  • 20 Martins // Mar 1, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Edgar will save us! LOL he will be playing Championship Football very soon

  • 21 Obafan // Mar 1, 2008 at 3:15 PM

The biggest joke is that how bad he plays, he walways gets his starting spot. KK is doing nothing else than SAS did in the first half of the season. KK has lost his feeling with football and I do not at all believe that he is the manager who will get us out of our miserable situation. We just have to hope that there are 3 other teams who are more sh*t than we are. We could have had a good season, but because of the choices our 2 managers have made, we were never been able to se the best possible lineup at NUFC during this season.
