Keegan Inceases Training Intensity on His Players

10:36 am, Saturday, March 1st, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Kevin again talked about the fact that confidence of his players is the main concern in the Newcastle United camp right now.

Kevin Keegan – players’ confidence is big concern right now

Kevin talked last night before the big game with Blackburn Rovers today:

“We are more or less fire-fighting at the moment as opposed to developing,” “The biggest problem I have found is the confidence. They’d not won a game for a while before I came.”

“I came in on the back of a team that got beat 6-0 and conceded six goals in the second half of a match. You cannot wipe that away overnight.”

Fitness has surprisingly been another issue, and Keegan also let it out that that training may have been too light under Sam Allardyce. Damien Duff said yesterday that the players were anything but fit under Big Sam, which surprised quite a few people.

Allardyce was known for his up to date and new world training methods, and we at least thought the players would be super fit. Apparently not.

Kevin continued:

“We have changed the training a little bit,” “I think the first two or three weeks, some of the players thought the training was quite hard and I felt we were training them lightly.”

“Now whether that is because under the previous regime, they were coming from a different angle – and that is a possibility – then, you know, I am not knocking them. My way is for players to train quite hard.”

It looks like the the players are enjoying the training since Kevin was known for keeping it interesting for the players. Certainly when you see the photographs of them in training, they all seem to be enjoying it – which is great for team spirit.

With the game now a little over 4 hours away, we really hope we can get that win today, anything else and the pressure will remain on our team, and the gossip press will just love it, as Keegan would say. :D

Comments always very welcome.

A bit of solid graft wont do them any harm at all!!!

That they are deemed to be unfit after 20 games of footy is just unbelievable; just what on earth were they doing? Surely its in every players interest to keep themselves at full fitness otherwise they are unable to perform their employment!!!

With a bit of luck we might start and see some benefit from Keegans “boot-camp” training with a concerted effort to take all 3 points today!!!

I’m not sure why, but I have a good feeling about todays game against Blackburn, I feel we are going to win and end our run of poor performances.
I hope Martins is back, his pace is a superb outlet for our defense for one, he can run the ball or chase the ball high up the pitch, and the obvious other reason would be his threat for himself and others in front of goal.

Another hope is we have Enrique back at left back, pushing N’Zogbia further up field whether it be left wing of left center mid.

Butt and Smith to be dropped please, yeah they can come on in the second half to rough it up a bit once we are winning, but thats all.
