It appears that Kevin Keegan has indeed decided to sign 32 year-old Senegal captain Lamine Diatta, following yesterday’s trial game and a couple of days to look at the player in training.
Lamine Diatta - looks like he will sign a contract today
Diatta will today undergo a medical this morning, and it is understood that if he passes it, the Senegalese player will be offered a short term deal at the club.
This means that Diatta will be Kevin’s first senior signing since rejoining the club as manager in mid January and it is expected that Lamine will sign a one year deal.
It appears that Keegan has been sufficiently impressed with the 32 year old free agent during his Newcastle trial. Keegan had pointed out repeatedly that he would not sign the player, if he was no better than was already at the club.
Birmingham City had initially been leading the chase and Wigan Athletic were also interested, so we assume that Steve Bruce was the man who was interested initially. But short term acquisitions like this are important to see Newcastle through some difficult times, especially in defense.
The reports suggest that Newcastle’s new recruitment team, headed by Dennis Wise, first brought the player to Keegan’s attention.
Diatta chose Newcastle United over Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic, so that’s a good sign and of course he will already know Beye and Faye, our other Senegalese Internationals, so hopefully will be able to settle at the club quickly. That will be important if he is to help us in our relegation fight.
