Newcastle To Offer Diatta Short Term Contract

12:05 pm, Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 38 Comments

It appears that Kevin Keegan has indeed decided to sign 32 year-old Senegal captain Lamine Diatta, following yesterday’s trial game and a couple of days to look at the player in training.

Lamine Diatta - looks like he will sign a contract today

Diatta will today undergo a medical this morning, and it is understood that if he passes it, the Senegalese player will be offered a short term deal at the club.

This means that Diatta will be Kevin’s first senior signing since rejoining the club as manager in mid January and it is expected that Lamine will sign a one year deal.

It appears that Keegan has been sufficiently impressed with the 32 year old free agent during his Newcastle trial. Keegan had pointed out repeatedly that he would not sign the player, if he was no better than was already at the club.

Birmingham City had initially been leading the chase and Wigan Athletic were also interested, so we assume that Steve Bruce was the man who was interested initially. But short term acquisitions like this are important to see Newcastle through some difficult times, especially in defense.

The reports suggest that Newcastle’s new recruitment team, headed by Dennis Wise, first brought the player to Keegan’s attention.

Diatta chose Newcastle United over Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic, so that’s a good sign and of course he will already know Beye and Faye, our other Senegalese Internationals, so hopefully will be able to settle at the club quickly.  That will be important if he is to help us in our relegation fight.

Comments welcome.

damn i forgot what i was going to say

oh now i remember, craig moore was brought in as a short term solution but i still think he looked a good defender, given he had more experience than diatta but maybe he can be a gem for us till the end of the season

Nice to see our players are working hard on the training field :)

  • 3 Eric // Mar 5, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Hope he fits in and is better than what we’ve been having so far. Give the bloke a chance – he
may contribute to saving the bacon. He knows how to play alongside Beye and Faye too. Who drops to the bench? Taylor?

  • 4 Graham // Mar 5, 2008 at 12:24 PM

We need to bring him in even if he’s no better than what we have. The last thing we want is Birmingham or Wigan strengthening their defences with them below us in the league.

  • 5 HeronMag // Mar 5, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Has anyone here watched him play? Is he any good?

  • 6 Jamie // Mar 5, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Hes the senegal captian so he’ll definitley Have the leadership qualities our backline needs…

  • 7 ronaldeano // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:01 PM

He knows Faye and Beye and they have played together so i have no complaints even tho i havent seen him play. A bit more comunication in the back line could only be a good thing….?

  • 8 CRAIGG // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:04 PM

If we defend well and If we stay up then he will be worth it

  • 9 Dragoner // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:22 PM

    Harper

    Beye Cacapa Diatta Enrique

    Milner Faye Barton Duff

    N’zogbia/Viduka

    Martins/Owen

Defence would be 75% french speaking and with cacapa, beye, and Diatta all leaders. Taylor should be dropped and shown how the experienced guys defend. Faye should protect the back four whilst barton is given a free-role midfield role.

Pair this fellow with faye please.. Cant see taylor can develop into a world class defender. He is over- rated. Statistics show taylor made at least one costly defensive blunderK per game..Kevin..Please sell him as we have enough cover emerging right up from edgar to carroll. You would be benefitted from throwing them in some games. Thrust me cause i am an expert. By the you need feng shui master to look at the ying yang in st james park and your training ground as we always loose and get all those stupid injuries.. Please be enlightened otherwise Mourinho is behind you..

  • 14 johnr // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Must be worth a try, but dont fancy the idea of our entire defence clearing off to the ANC next January.

  • 15 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:43 PM

ACN is every 2 years, isn’t it?..

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:44 PM

  • 19 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 1:55 PM

  • 20 thelongshanks // Mar 5, 2008 at 3:35 PM

So senegal left back next target, buy all senengal team sounds like a plan.

  • 21 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Yea, the senegalese players we’ve got seem to defend best for us…i.e. let us down the least!..
…All we gotta do then is teach Enrique french!..
Have they got any decent mid-fielders?..

  • 22 Marty // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:03 PM

    what a twat!!!!!

  • 23 johnr // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:10 PM

    sorry!

  • 24 aaron d // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:18 PM

wasn’t Diatta playing center back when Liverpool beat besikas 8-0?

  • 25 scott9 // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:28 PM

i thought el hadj diouf was senagal captain

  • 26 Marty // Mar 5, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Johnr!! Did ya check out the video on Callum`s post?
Smith seems interested in what he is doing but not on the field

  • 27 Obafan // Mar 5, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Hope he will give the defence the rest and the skills to hold for clean sheets. Now he is worth taking, even if I didn’t see him play, I’m 100% after this one.
Tjhe defence is very weak, especially overrated Taylor, so every improvement is welcome.

This could make our team look like a completely new center

    Harper
    Beye – Diatta – Cacapa – Enrique
    Duff – Faye – Emre – N’Zogbia
    Owen – Martins

That looks like a very soilid team casue Faye will do whatever it takes to protect his 2 central defenders. Also lots of experience and lots of leaders in the team.

I really doubt this will be the team thart KK will pick. On the Barton news I’ve already typed this as I think this will be the team for next Saturday. I do not want this team but I think KK will make this team selection

    Harper
    Beye – Taylor – Faye – Enrique
    Milner – Butt – Smith – Duff
    Owen – Martins

I think KK will not give a start to Diatta, but my main concern is that the loser Smith needs to play every game and now that Barton is not available he will stick with Smith in midfield.

  • 28 Cockney Magpie // Mar 5, 2008 at 5:34 PM

    when is emre back?

  • 29 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 5:39 PM

Cockney Magpie, the sooner the better mate!..
…Please spare us from Smith in mid-field!..

  • 30 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 5:41 PM

I fear Obafan may be right!..

  • 31 Davy C // Mar 5, 2008 at 6:38 PM

No one seems to have mentioned it so far but as well as playing with Faye and Beye for Senegal Diatta also partnered Cacapa for two seasons in Lyon’s title winning team!

    A good aquisition – I hope!!!

  • 32 Punk Skunk // Mar 5, 2008 at 7:03 PM

That’s a good point davy c!..Let’s hope it works out!..

  • 33 Nobby's dad // Mar 5, 2008 at 7:33 PM

Callum …watched the video. No wonder Shay has a groin strain married to that rather attractive young lady!!

  • 34 CJ // Mar 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Nobbys dad- I know exactly what you are talking about she is unbeliaveble.

  • 35 VJ // Mar 6, 2008 at 12:14 AM

I think bringing in a defender is very important right now and Diatta could help steer Newcastle away from relegation and maybe to a mid table finish. He is a strong international defender, good in the air and has a real presence. Him being a captain means he can help with the leadership and maybe he could be the one to train Taylor to become a world class defender. Secondly he’s a fresh face, and the fact that confidence is low means that KK needs to bring back some life into the squad. Maybe this Diatta is the man.
In the middle of the park KK needs to get Emre as sharp as possible because he is crucial to KK style of play. KK even mentioned in his interview that Emre is the one player on the team who can produce the pin point passes important to free the wide men and Micheal Owen.

  • 36 ELFER // Mar 6, 2008 at 9:34 AM

I have a question now for you: What do we do now with 4-5 right fullbacks?? Or is he going to play in middle defense as unit with FAYE (would mean taylor slips out and this would be even more dynamite to let him go mad)?

  • 37 Obafan // Mar 6, 2008 at 12:10 PM

ELFER – I think Taylor is overrated and I do not see any problems with him willing to leave. Let him go, teams want to pay for him (esp. Tottenham). Perhaps after another year nobody wants him anymore as he makes so many childish mistakes.

We have to stop giving advantages to those who are Gearodies; if they are as bas as another player we should mention it or the staff should see it. Cacapa and Diatta in center of our defence with Faye in front of him could be a very solid trio. And perhaps a big step forward.

But I can’t see KK choose such a team; he wants Taylor and Butt in his team. Very strange and let’s hope that those decisions are not leading to
    relegtation.

  • 38 Scott Hodge // Mar 6, 2008 at 12:16 PM

I would drop Taylor he’s constantly getting out of position and thats when his problems arise ie the shirt pulling, the handling and the fouling. Put him back in the reserves and give Edgar a chance, remember the way that kid played in his home debut against Man Utd, that man of the match performace NEVER gets mentioned. Diatta is 32 and Cacapa 33 so these two are at the end of their careers. We need a huge clear out in Summer…..Taylor, Carr, Enrique, Cacapa, Smith, Barton, Owen, Ameobi, Duff, Ramage, Viduka, all spring to mind !!
