Newcastle United Still Linked With Bafe Gomis

There is news today that Newcastle United are still interested in St Etienne striker Bafe Gomis.

Bafetimbi Gomis
– young French striker

The reports have suggest that Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan is ready to offer up to £12M for the youngster, who has been likened to Chelsea star Didier Drogba.

But that seems a lot of money for an almost unknown player. But if he is anything like Drogba he may be worth it. We certainly need some player who can stick the ball in the back of the net with some consistency.

French sources say Spain’s Sevilla, along with West Ham United and Bolton Wanderers, have also made Saint-Etienne aware of their interest in Gomis in the last month.

Gomis is French of Senegalese descent and a striker who stands just over 6’0” tall and has played 55 times for St Etienne and scored 12 goals.

Here is Gomis’ current playing record in France:

Years Club App Goals

2003-2005 Saint-Étienne 17 2
2005 Troyes AC 13 6
2005-present Saint-Étienne 55 12
2001-2002 France U-17 1 0

It’s difficult to say whether this boy would be a good buy or not. Certainly he’s young enough. What do you think?

Comments welcome.

True. The other teams interested in him says a lot. 12 million is a lot of moneyI must admit. He may be a gem. Anyway he will not be an option till after season end.

Think he’s the type of player that we’ll have to see before we can judge. If he is anything like Drogba at all we should snap him up. If Ashley’s happy to put his own money in, fair enough! He promised us investment, let’s hope we start seeing it in bucketloads!

This guy could be a gem like Drogba, Berbatov, Santa Cruz, McCarthy, Eduardo, Benjani

All have been risky unproven buys from abroad and had never played in the premiership before

we should be braver and have a punt because his value will probably triple. Ive seen him play a few times and he looks to have everything and he is only 22.

Drogba was really a one season wonder at Marseille and did nothing special for Chelsea in his first 2 seasons, Yet last season was amazing.

So dont read too much into this lads scoring rate as playing with better players that will improve and he will be a great foil for owen or Martins and can be rotated with carroll as the main target man.

will he want toplay in the champioship.why do we keep living in dreamland.attracting top players was 5 years ago.the only world class player we ever signed was shearer and if he wasnt a geordie he would have gone to man utd.we need team players not overpaid over the hill stars like viduka.look at valencia and porto.never sign world class players but they are when they sell them.these teams do well year after year with small fan bases and well drilled teams.

    Paul the pom

Dont you remember Asprilla, Lee, Ginola, Ferdinand and Beardsley from Keegans first team

Given is a world class goalkeeper and has been for years

Owen is a world class finisher playing in an awful team

He’s got a good amount of height on him as well so it’s not like we’re chasing another small striker to add to Oba and Owen.

I don’t think money should be a stalling point for a team like us so desperate to improve. If he looks like he could be good enough, pay the money. He can’t be worse than Viduka.

Hopefully the board will continue their sensible ways and use clauses up to the £12m ‘valuation’, so that if he doesn’t make it, we don’t suffer another Luque situation.

Keegan has been good at picking out players in the past, I would be more comfortable with this decision if Viduka was leaving and we were bringing in two players, the way it stands at present if Owen or more importantly Martins injures we are facing relegation, at the start of next season if the new lad doesnt settle and Owen or Martins injures we are in for an awful season again, I would like to see someone like Cisse brought in as well as the youngster, or just a solid mediocre player who does score such as Jason Roberts who would only cost about £2.5m to pull us out of the crap if it all goes pearshaped like it did when Martins was away.
That way if he is a superstar we are laughing, if not we have a plan B, we have been lacking a plan B this year.

Chkhaoui is more or less a done deal to Hamburg or Bayern, most probably Hamburg if van der Vaart leaves + I think Chermiti is more of a talent, would be cheaper and i really want to get rid of Smith.

    From Wiikpedia:
Chermiti has been scouted by Olympique Marseille of France, FC Zurich of Switzerland, Newcastle United of England and Hamburg of Germany along with others

Do they read this blog they must think Tom_Toons one of our scouts

My very first comment on the blog, so hello lads and greetings from Oz to all my wonderful Geordies, from an exiled son of Byker and avid fan of the Black and Whites.
12 Million? That’s a lot of money. We could buy two Alan Smiths with that. Think of the havoc that would cause!
Seriously, can’t we drop the price a bit? Caution is requested, I feel. He may well be a good catch, though.

PAULTHEPOOM i agree with CRAIGG as we have also had Andy Cole n Lauren Robert when they were at their best!
Also Valencia n Porto have had a Great youth recruitment system for yrs which we seem to be getting in order now!
These teams have a better choice as spain n portugal have quality youngsters as England doesn`t have the skilled quality youngsters as there.
Back to the point, this would be too much for this guy but when we spend money as we have done before we have got to get decent quality.
    TOONLAD,welcome onboard 😉

I think he is worth a risk. Who would have bought Adebayor from Metz???? He might become the same player, why not??? The only thing is, 12 mil is a lot of money for someone who is that young and has not proven that much. So I say try to buy him for a cheaper price (max 8 mil) and transform him into our new Asprilla (who was fantastic for the Toon, but already was proven art Parma).

Punk Skunk – Perhaps it is paper talk, but it would not be the first time that Newcastle pay way too much to get in a player (Luque, Marcelinho; Smith all are other examples). So I hope they find the right price quality amount.

all those bar drogba cost less than 12m and drogba was signed by a club prepapred to pay anything (13m for a rb) of the back of a season when he scored against every team he played against in the cl and uefa cup.

Hey obafan, all i’m sayin’ bro’ is that he may not cost that price…the media just picks a number out of the sky sometimes…especially when talking about us or chav$ki!..
…Y’right about us payin’ too much sometimes, but players don’t come cheap any more, unless y’get ’em young, like we’re trying to do, or they’re damaged goods…& we gotta get ’em all the way up north, which does put some players off, etc…But, to be honest, we should play our cards a lot closer to our chest!..I’d rather not know who’s coming in & avoid all the media bollox…Which sometimes alerts other clubs & pushes the price up!..& then they can make up any crap they like & it wouldn’t matter…We should cut their supply line to news stories!..
    …I’d truely love that!..

do players in the german league not consider the premiership more attractive than their champions league teams ? it used to for a while anyway ! ,
we should be raiding the german league for some of their stars .

very difficult to say. A youngster with 22? hm, not really anymore? But if he turns out to be something near drogba all will say fantastic signing!

But if not people start again to boughter us for spending too much money on “wrong” targets…difficult as said!

Overmeire – overrated and average in an average team.
De Smet – fantastic player but he needs more time to develop. Perfectly for him would be first going to a Dutch team (better league than ours) and then perhaps a step to a big league (maybe EPL).

De Sutter is a fantastic striker and can be very positive for the future of the Belgian football (which is very low ATM). But how will he return after his injury (knee). I hope he will not have that much problems to develop after his injury. From the youngsters he is the one that I see with the biggest future.

Others are Defour (fantastic player, but alse needs more developping and is injured again), Fellaini (not so sure about him), Gillet (good player and now at Anderlecht and making an impact overthere). Let’s hope for Belgium that they can rebuild the Belgium level! But for Newcastle or any other team in Spain, England, Germany and Italy it is far too early for them.
