Shay Given – to visit a specialist in Belgium

Ever since Shay injured his bowel in September 2006, in a terrible clash with Marvin Harewood at West Ham, he’s never been the same.

His groin has been left weak and it has gone in quite a few games since then. Each time he has had to be replaced by Steve Harper, our second string goalkeeper.

Not surprisingly Shay’s form has not been at his usual very high standards, so he is off to Belgium this week in an attempt to get to the bottom of the injury.

It may be that a prolonged rest is necessary, and we think he should take that rest now, if that’s what is prescribed. But we think Kevin Keegan will more likely want Shay available and leave his rest until the summer.

But Shay is not right, and it’s important to understand exactly what  the situation is with his groin, and to get it fixed. We’d like to see a fully fit Shay Given ready to go for next season.

That’s really the bottom line on Shay.

Comments welcome.

I’m glad Steve Harper will get more time in goal, i really rate the guy and think he’s been unlucky with shay infront of him in the pecking order. However, it will be nice to have shay back to his old self come august and the new season.

doesnt matter how many different people he sees he will not become fit as before unless he is given adequate resting time.

Aye, he needs to not play & get properly fit!..
…It’s blatently obvious that he ain’t been!..
I just wish he’d done this months ago, instead of tryin’ to carry on at the expense of the team…
…But it does go to show how good he thinks Harper is, ‘cos he obviously feels a bit under pressure from him, which ultimately, has to be a good thing?..I’m sure he’ll get his place back if/when he gets fully fit & proves his worth again!..So, get well Shay & show us what y’made of!..

Punkskunk, he doesn’t know whats going on with it it’s harsh to say that he played at the expense of the team. He’s to go all the way to Belgium to try and figure out what’s wrong with it and like he could be fine one minute and injured the next. It was very irresponsible of Keegan to play him against Man U if he knew there was a chance of getting injured, yet Keegan pushed him again and I don’t know why, maybe he sees more in Given then he does in Harper who knows.
He’s great mates with Harper they’ve been there together for 10 odd years, and he’ll have no problem trusting him with it.
Hopefully he’ll get rid of sooner rather then later and we can have the old bouncy fit Shay back come next season. What I can’t understand though is if we’ve such a good second string keeper why is Keegan pushing him so much. He could just make him rest now like but I suppose he’d rather him in his corner then on the sideline. It’s a horrible injury, you wouldn’t wish an anyone and lets hope he can finally shake it and he gets well soon.

    Arlreet macca,
yea, my sentiments exactly!..KK shouldn’t be pushin’ him, he needs proper rest & attention!..
All i’m sayin’ mate is, Shay should get KK told that he needs treatment…I know he wants to do his best for the Lads & not let anyone down…Hey, at least he’s seein’ a specialist now, he obviously needs to…& Harper will fill in admirably, i’m sure!..
