Shay Given – to visit a specialist in Belgium
Ever since Shay injured his bowel in September 2006, in a terrible clash with Marvin Harewood at West Ham, he’s never been the same.
His groin has been left weak and it has gone in quite a few games since then. Each time he has had to be replaced by Steve Harper, our second string goalkeeper.
Not surprisingly Shay’s form has not been at his usual very high standards, so he is off to Belgium this week in an attempt to get to the bottom of the injury.
It may be that a prolonged rest is necessary, and we think he should take that rest now, if that’s what is prescribed. But we think Kevin Keegan will more likely want Shay available and leave his rest until the summer.
But Shay is not right, and it’s important to understand exactly what the situation is with his groin, and to get it fixed. We’d like to see a fully fit Shay Given ready to go for next season.
That’s really the bottom line on Shay.
