Australia who were 3-0 winners over Qatar in their opening group match in Melbourne last month, are due to play China on March 26th.
Mark Viduka – never fit for Newcastle never mind Australia
But Australia’s Dutch coach Verbeek has confirmed he will not be calling on Newcastle’s Mark Viduka for that game.
That seems to us like non-news since Mark has consistently been unfit for several weeks for Newcastle with what is said to be a slight hamstring injury. We have no idea if he’ll be fit for tomorrow’s game at Liverpool but we doubt it.
In a time of great need for Newcastle United, Mark has simply been unavailable because of injury. This season he has made just 20 appearances for the club, with only 13 of them being starts, and he’s scored 5 goals.
Verbeek said to the Sydney Morning Herald today:
“I have made an appointment to see Mark in April, but we don’t need him for a game like this,”
Viduka was Australia’s captain for the 2006 World Cup, but he is so injury prone these days that it’s hardly even ethical to think of playing for Australia, when he cannot even turn out for his club team, who pay him a reported £65K/week. He’s hardly earned those wages this season.
We think Mark must be a lot more productive for Newcastle this season in our last 10 games, when we need him most, and forget about his career with Australia – it should be over and he should concentrate on earning his huge wages at Newcastle.
In fact there are rumors that Kevin Keegan may unload Mark in the summer, simply because he never seems available due to niggly injuries.
